We elucidate the mismatch between the $A$-anomaly coefficient and the coefficient of the logarithmic term in the entanglement entropy of a Maxwell field. In contrast to the usual assumptions about the protection of renormalization group charges at the infrared, the logarithmic term is different for a free Maxwell field and a Maxwell field interacting with heavy charges. This is possible because of the presence of superselection sectors in the IR theory. However, the correction due to the coupling with charged vacuum fluctuations, that restores the anomaly coefficient, is independent of the precise UV dynamics. The problem is invariant under electromagnetic duality, and the solution requires both the existence of electric charges and magnetic monopoles. We use a real-time operator approach but we also show how the results for the free and interacting fields are translated into an effective correction to the four-sphere partition function., Comment: 25 pages, 2 figures

We describe the submission of the Quo Vadis team to the Traffic4cast competition, which was organized as part of the NeurIPS 2019 series of challenges. Our system consists of a temporal regression module, implemented as $1\times1$ 2d convolutions, augmented with spatio-temporal biases. We have found that using biases is a straightforward and efficient way to include seasonal patterns and to improve the performance of the temporal regression model. Our implementation obtains a mean squared error of $9.47\times 10^{-3}$ on the test data, placing us on the eight place team-wise. We also present our attempts at incorporating spatial correlations into the model; however, contrary to our expectations, adding this type of auxiliary information did not benefit the main system. Statistical analyses from exoplanet surveys around low-mass stars indicate that super-Earth and Neptune-mass planets are more frequent than gas giants around such stars, in agreement with core accretion theory of planet formation. Using precise radial velocities derived from visual and near-infrared spectra, we report the discovery of a giant planet with a minimum mass of 0.46 Jupiter masses in an eccentric 204-day orbit around the very low-mass star GJ 3512. Dynamical models show that the high eccentricity of the orbit is most likely explained from planet-planet interactions. The reported planetary system challenges current formation theories and puts stringent constraints on the accretion and migration rates of planet formation and evolution models, indicating that disc instability may be more efficient in forming planets than previously thought., Comment: Manuscript author version. 41 pages, 11 figures

We study the conditions under which, given a generic quantum system, complexity metrics provide actual lower bounds to the circuit complexity associated to a set of quantum gates. Inhomogeneous cost functions ---many examples of which have been recently proposed in the literature--- are ruled out by our analysis. Such measures are shown to be unrelated to circuit complexity in general and to produce severe violations of Lloyd's bound in simple situations. Among the metrics which do provide lower bounds, the idea is to select those which produce the tightest possible ones. This establishes a hierarchy of cost functions and considerably reduces the list of candidate complexity measures. In particular, the criterion suggests a canonical way of dealing with penalties, consisting in assigning infinite costs to directions not belonging to the gate set. We discuss how this can be implemented through the use of Lagrange multipliers. We argue that one of the surviving cost functions defines a particularly canonical notion in the sense that: i) it straightforwardly follows from the standard Hermitian metric in Hilbert space; ii) its associated complexity functional is closely related to Kirillov's coadjoint orbit action, providing an explicit realization of the ``complexity equals action'' idea; iii) it arises from a Hamilton-Jacobi analysis of the ``quantum action'' describing quantum dynamics in the phase space canonically associated to every Hilbert space. Finally, we explain how these structures provide a natural framework for characterizing chaos in classical and quantum systems on an equal footing, find the minimal geodesic connecting two nearby trajectories, and describe how complexity measures are sensitive to Lyapunov exponents., Comment: 57 pages, 1 figure

Technology evolves quickly. Low-cost and ready-to-connect devices are designed to provide new services and applications. Smart grids or smart healthcare systems are some examples of these applications, all of which are in the context of smart cities. In this total-connectivity scenario, some security issues arise since the larger the number of connected devices is, the greater the surface attack dimension. In this way, new solutions for monitoring and detecting security events are needed to address new challenges brought about by this scenario, among others, the large number of devices to monitor, the large amount of data to manage and the real-time requirement to provide quick security event detection and, consequently, quick response to attacks. In this work, a practical and ready-to-use tool for monitoring and detecting security events in these environments is developed and introduced. The tool is based on the Multivariate Statistical Network Monitoring (MSNM) methodology for monitoring and anomaly detection and we call it MSNM-Sensor. Although it is in its early development stages, experimental results based on the detection of well-known attacks in hierarchical network systems prove the suitability of this tool for more complex scenarios, such as those found in smart cities or IoT ecosystems.

Context. Teegarden's Star is the brightest and one of the nearest ultra-cool dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood. For its late spectral type (M7.0V), the star shows relatively little activity and is a prime target for near-infrared radial velocity surveys such as CARMENES. Aims. As part of the CARMENES search for exoplanets around M dwarfs, we obtained more than 200 radial-velocity measurements of Teegarden's Star and analysed them for planetary signals. Methods. We find periodic variability in the radial velocities of Teegarden's Star. We also studied photometric measurements to rule out stellar brightness variations mimicking planetary signals. Results. We find evidence for two planet candidates, each with $1.1M_\oplus$ minimum mass, orbiting at periods of 4.91 and 11.4 d, respectively. No evidence for planetary transits could be found in archival and follow-up photometry. Small photometric variability is suggestive of slow rotation and old age. Conclusions. The two planets are among the lowest-mass planets discovered so far, and they are the first Earth-mass planets around an ultra-cool dwarf for which the masses have been determined using radial velocities., Comment: A&A 627, A49. 26 pages, 17 figures, 6 tables. Some quantum field theories show, in a fundamental or an effective manner, an alternative between a loss of duality for algebras of operators corresponding to complementary regions, or a loss of additivity. In this latter case, the algebra contains some operator that is not generated locally, in the former, the entropies of complementary regions do not coincide. Typically, these features are related to the incompleteness of the operator content of the theory, or, in other words, to the existence of superselection sectors. We review some aspects of the mathematical literature on superselection sectors aiming attention to the physical picture and focusing on the consequences for entanglement entropy (EE). For purposes of clarity, the whole discussion is divided into two parts according to the superselection sectors classification: The present part I is devoted to superselection sectors arising from global symmetries, and the forthcoming part II will consider those arising from local symmetries. Under this perspective, here restricted to global symmetries, we study in detail different cases such as models with finite and Lie group symmetry as well as with spontaneous symmetry breaking or excited states. We illustrate the general results with simple examples. As an important application, we argue the features of holographic entanglement entropy correspond to a picture of a sub-theory with a large number of superselection sectors and suggest some ways in which this identification could be made more precise., Comment: 87 pages, 7 figures

We formulate Nielsen's geometric approach to complexity in the context of two dimensional conformal field theories, where series of conformal transformations are interpreted as unitary circuits. We show that the complexity functional can be written as the Polyakov action of two dimensional gravity or, equivalently, as the geometric action on the coadjoint orbits of the Virasoro group. This way, we argue that gravity sets the rules for optimal quantum computation in conformal field theories., Comment: v2 includes major text revision and clarifications. We study aspects of black holes and quantum chaos through the behavior of computational costs, which are distance notions in the manifold of unitaries of the theory. To this end, we enlarge Nielsen geometric approach to quantum computation and provide metrics for finite temperature/energy scenarios and CFT's. From the framework, it is clear that costs can grow in two different ways: operator vs `simple' growths. The first type mixes operators associated to different penalties, while the second does not. Important examples of simple growths are those related to symmetry transformations, and we describe the costs of rotations, translations, and boosts. For black holes, this analysis shows how infalling particle costs are controlled by the maximal Lyapunov exponent, and motivates a further bound on the growth of chaos. The analysis also suggests a correspondence between proper energies in the bulk and average `local' scaling dimensions in the boundary. Finally, we describe these complexity features from a dual perspective. Using recent results on SYK we compute a lower bound to the computational cost growth in SYK at infinite temperature. At intermediate times it is controlled by the Lyapunov exponent, while at long times it saturates to a linear growth, as expected from the gravity description., Comment: 30 pages

A compact, portable and large field-of-view gamma camera to identify, locate and quantify gamma-ray emitting radioisotopes in real-time has been developed. The device delivers spectroscopic and imaging capabilities, which allow one to use it in a variety of nuclear waste characterisation scenarios, such as radioactivity monitoring in nuclear power plants and more specifically for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities. The technical development of this apparatus and some examples of its application in field measurements are reported in this article. The performance of the presented gamma-camera is also benchmarked against other conventional techniques.

We report on the first star discovered to host a planet detected by radial velocity (RV) observations obtained within the CARMENES survey for exoplanets around M dwarfs. HD 147379 ($V = 8.9$ mag, $M = 0.58 \pm 0.08$ M$_{\odot}$), a bright M0.0V star at a distance of 10.7 pc, is found to undergo periodic RV variations with a semi-amplitude of $K = 5.1\pm0.4$ m s$^{-1}$ and a period of $P = 86.54\pm0.06$ d. The RV signal is found in our CARMENES data, which were taken between 2016 and 2017, and is supported by HIRES/Keck observations that were obtained since 2000. The RV variations are interpreted as resulting from a planet of minimum mass $m_{\rm p}\sin{i} = 25 \pm 2$ M$_{\oplus}$, 1.5 times the mass of Neptune, with an orbital semi-major axis $a = 0.32$ au and low eccentricity ($e < 0.13$). HD 147379b is orbiting inside the temperate zone around the star, where water could exist in liquid form. The RV time-series and various spectroscopic indicators show additional hints of variations at an approximate period of 21.1d (and its first harmonic), which we attribute to the rotation period of the star., Comment: accepted for publication as A&A Letter
