While the phenomenon of one- and two-neutron ground-state halo nuclei is well established, the effects of weak binding on nuclear excitation properties remain largely unexplored. Motivated by this question and by recent data in 40 Mg we investigate the coupling of weakly bound (halo) valence neutrons to a core using the known properties of 40 Mg to explore and illustrate possible particle-core coupling schemes and their impact on the low-lying excitation spectrum. Abstract

The development of advanced γ-ray tracking arrays allows for a sensitive new technique to investigate elusive states of exotic nuclei with fast rare-isotope beams. By taking advantage of the excellent energy and position resolution of the Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking In-beam Nuclear Array, we developed a novel technique to identify in-flight isomeric decays of the 0⁺₂ state in 32Mg populated in a two-proton removal reaction. We confirm the 0⁺₂→2+1γ-ray transition of ³²Mg and constrain the 0⁺₂ decay lifetime, suggesting a large collectivity. The small partial cross section populating the 0⁺₂ state in this reaction provides experimental evidence for the reduced occupancy of the normal configuration of the 0⁺₂ state, indicating the intruder dominance of this state.

Abstract

In an experiment performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s 88-inch cyclotron, the isotope 244Md was produced in the 209Bi(40Ar,5n) reaction. Decay properties of 244Md were measured at the focal plane of the Berkeley Gas-filled Separator, and the mass number assignment of A = 244 was confirmed with the apparatus for the identification of nuclide A. The isotope 244Md is reported to have one, possibly two, α-decaying states with α energies of 8.66(2) and 8.31(2) MeV and half-lives of 0.4+0.4-0.1 and ∼6 s, respectively. Additionally, first evidence of the α decay of 236Bk was observed and is reported.

Abstract

The evolution of the traditional nuclear magic numbers away from the valley of stability is an active field of research. Experimental efforts focus on providing key spectroscopic information that will shed light into the structure of exotic nuclei and understanding the driving mechanism behind the shell evolution. In this work, we investigate the Z = 6 spin-orbit shell gap towards the neutron dripline. To do so, we employed N-A(p,2p)CA-1 quasi-free scattering reactions to measure the proton component of the 2(1)(+) state of C-16,C-18,C-20. The experimental findings support the notion of a moderate reduction of the proton 1p(1/2) - 1p(3/2) spin-orbit splitting, at variance to recent claims for a prevalent Z = 6 magic number towards the neutron dripline. Abstract

The unfavoured signature of the rotation-aligned band associated with the prolate h9/2 structure in 187T1 has been identified. The deformation-aligned 11/2−[505] band is also confirmed and extended. While the alignment properties of the 11/2−[505] band seem to indicate that it has a similar magnitude of deformation as the prolate 186Hg core, the signature splitting at low spin, taken together with new self-consistent calculations, suggest that it may actually be triaxial with γ ≈ −180 near the bandhead.

Abstract

International audience; 132Sn is one of the rare neutron-rich unstable nuclei, with classical doubly magic shell closures, that is experimentally accessible with the recent developments in accelerators and detectors. The study of the excited states and the transition probabilities in nuclei in its vicinity, with few particles or/and holes added to the inert core, are crucial for understanding the shell model theory and the relevant pp, pn and nn interactions in this mass A ∼ 130 region. Additionally, in this mass-region, there are presence of many seniority isomers in the range of ns to µs. When the lifetime of the isomer is of the order of µs’s, an additional challenge appears in correlating the γ-ray transition feeding and depopulating these isomers. Therefore, these nuclei are often known either from their isomer decay or from their prompt γ spectroscopy. In the present work, the prompt-delayed spectroscopy of neutronrich Sb isotopes have been carried out by utilising the unique combination of AGATA, VAMOS++ and EXOGAM detectors [1].

Abstract

© 2018 American Physical Society. The energy levels and γ-ray decay scheme of the positive-parity states in the Tz=12 nucleus As67 have been studied by using the Ca40(Ar36,2αp)As67 reaction at a beam energy of 145 MeV. Two new band structures have been identified which can be connected to the previously known levels. The results for these bands are compared with configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. The good level of agreement between theory and experiment suggests that these structures can be interpreted in terms of configurations that involve three g92 particles and that both possess noncollective terminating states.

Abstract

The superfluid tunneling model is applied to the calculation of half-lives of the observed α decays in N=84 isotones. Results of our calculations are compared to experimental data on the ground-state α decays along the isotonic chain from 144Nd to 159Re. Good agreement is found. The α decays of the known high-spin isomers in 155Lu, 156Hf, 157Ta, and 158W are also well reproduced, once a reduction in the pairing strength is taken into account. This includes reproduction of the main features of the recently observed fine structure from 155Lu (25/2-) and 156Hf (8+). Predictions for the α-decay fine structure of 157Ta (25/2-) and 158W (8+) high-spin isomers are presented.

Abstract

The development of advanced gamma-ray tracking arrays allows for a sensitive new technique to investigate elusive states of exotic nuclei with fast rare-isotope beams. By taking advantage of the excellent energy and position resolution of the Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking In-beam Nuclear Array, we developed a novel technique to identify in-flight isomeric decays of the 0(2)(+) state in Mg-32 populated in a two-proton removal reaction. We confirm the 0(2)(+) -> 2(1)(+) gamma-ray transition of Mg-32 and constrain the 0(2)(+) decay lifetime, suggesting a large collectivity. The small partial cross section populating the 0(2)(+) state in this reaction provides experimental evidence for the reduced occupancy of the normal configuration of the 0(2)(+) state, indicating the intruder dominance of this state.

A. Vogt et al. -- 14 pags., 10 figs., The transitional nuclei Xe132 and Xe133 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe136+Pb208 MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (ii) in the Xe136+Pt198 MNT reaction employing the GAMMASPHERE spectrometer in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iii) as an evaporation residue after a Te130(α,xn)Xe134-xn fusion-evaporation reaction employing the HORUS γ-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemes are considerably extended above the Jπ=(7-) and (10+) isomers in Xe132 and above the 11/2- isomer in Xe133. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z=54 as well as the N=78 and N=79 chains. Furthermore, evidence is found for a long-lived (T1/2â‰1μs) isomer in Xe133 which closes a gap along the N=79 isotones. Abstract

© 2017 American Physical Society. The Si31 nucleus was produced through the O18(O18, αn) fusion-evaporation reaction at Elab=24MeV. Evaporated α particles from the reaction were detected and identified in the Microball detector array for channel selection. Multiple γ-ray coincidence events were detected in Gammasphere. The energy and angle information for the α particles was used to determine the Si31 recoil kinematics on an event-by-event basis for a more accurate Doppler correction. A total of 22 new states and 52 new γ transitions were observed, including 14 from states above the neutron separation energy. The positive-parity states predicted by the shell-model calculations in the sd model space agree well with experiment. The negative-parity states were compared with shell-model calculations in the psdpf model space with some variations in the N=20 shell gap. The best agreement was found with a shell gap intermediate between that originally used for A≈20 nuclei and that previously adapted for P32,34. This variation suggests the need for a more universal cross-shell interaction.

Abstract

© 2017 American Physical Society. The calcium isotopes have emerged as a critical testing ground for new microscopically derived shell-model interactions, and a great deal of experimental and theoretical focus has been directed toward this region. We investigate the relative spectroscopic strengths associated with 1f7/2 neutron hole states in Ca47,49 following one-neutron knockout reactions from Ca48,50. The observed reduction of strength populating the 7/21- state in Ca49, as compared to Ca47, is inconsistent with shell-model calculations using both phenomenological interactions such as GXPF1, and interactions derived from microscopically based two- and three-nucleon forces. The result suggests a fragmentation of the l=3 strength to higher-lying states as suggested by the microscopic calculations, but the observed magnitude of the reduction is not reproduced in any shell-model description.

Abstract

We report on a new measurement of the strength of the superallowed 0+->0+ transition in the beta-decay of 10C: 10C(0+,g.s.)->10B(0+,1.74MeV)+e+nu. The experiment was done at the LBNL 88-inch cyclotron using forty seven GAMMASPHERE germanium detectors. Precise knowledge of this branching ratio is necessary to compute the superallowed Fermi ft, which gives the weak vector coupling constant and the u to d element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi- Maskawa quark mixing matrix., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The high-spin structures and isomers of the N=81 isotones Xe135 and Ba137 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe136+U238 and (ii) Xe136+Pb208 MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (iii) in the Xe136+Pt198 MNT reaction employing the γ-ray array GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iv) via a B11+Te130 fusion-evaporation reaction with the HORUS γ-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemesof Xe135 and Ba137 are considerably extended to higher energies. The 2058-keV (19/2-) state in Xe135 is identified as an isomer, closing a gap in the systematics along the N=81 isotones. Its half-life is measured to be 9.0(9) ns, corresponding to a reduced transition probability of B(E2,19/2-→15/2-)=0.52(6) W.u. The experimentally deduced reduced transition probabilities of the isomeric states are compared to shell-model predictions. Latest shell-model calculations reproduce the experimental findings generally well and provide guidance to the interpretation of the new levels.
