114. Kinetic effects in the transverse filamentation instability of pair plasmas

Abstract

The evolution of the filamentation instability produced by two counter-streaming pair plasmas is studied with particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations in both one (1D) and two (2D) spatial dimensions. Radiation friction effects on particles are taken into account. During the nonlinear stage of the instability, a strong broadening of the particle energy spectrum occurs accompanied by the formation of a peak at twice their initial energy. A simple theory of the peak formation is presented. The presence of radiative losses does not change the dynamics of the instability but affects the structure of the particle spectra.

Abstract

We investigate pressure-induced structural changes to the Peierls-type distorted low-temperature phase of the low-dimensional Sc$_3$CoC$_4$ as a possible origin of its pressure-enhanced superconductivity. By means of cryogenic high-pressure x-ray diffraction experiments we could reveal subtle, but significant structural differences between the low-temperature phase at ambient and elevated pressures. We could thus establish the structure of the superconducting phase of the title compound which interestingly still shows the main features of the Peierls-type distorted low-temperature phase. This indicates that in contrast to other low-dimensional materials a suppression of periodic structural distortions is no prerequisite for superconducitivity in the transition metal carbide.

Abstract

Fractal analysis is a mathematical approach employed to study and describe complex patterns and structures across various disciplines, including mathematics, physics, computer science, biology and finance. Introduced by mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot in the 1970s, fractals are intricate, self-similar patterns that repeat at different scales, exhibiting consistent structures upon magnification or reduction. This analysis involves generating fractals through iterative processes or recursive equations, resulting in highly detailed and complex formations. Fractal analysis enhances medical images by removing noise while preserving details and improving diagnostic quality in magnetic resonance and computed tomography scans. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies on its application in ultrasound imaging, prompting this narrative review to investigate its use and methodology in this context. Selected papers on the use of fractal analysis in ultrasound imaging were analyzed. Out of 186 records screened, 60 duplicates were removed and 28 were discarded. The text content of 98 potentially eligible papers was checked, with 65 not meeting inclusion criteria. Finally, 33 studies were included in the review. Fractal analysis enhances ultrasound imaging by providing detailed tissue texture characterization, aiding in the diagnosis of conditions like breast and lung cancer, osteoporosis and hypertensive disorders in pregnancy. It quantifies biological structure complexity and improves diagnostic accuracy and reliability. This technique supports clinicians in making informed decisions by offering critical insights into various medical conditions.

Abstract

Monitoring the integrity of aeronautical structures is fundamental for safety. Structural Health Monitoring Systems (SHMSs) perform real-time monitoring functions, but their performance must be carefully assessed. This is typically done by introducing artificial damages to the components; however, such a procedure requires the production and testing of a large number of structural elements. In this work, the damage detection performance of a strain-based SHMS was evaluated on a composite helicopter rotor blade root, exploiting a Finite Element (FE) model of the component. The SHMS monitored the bonding between the central core and the surrounding antitorsional layer. A damage detection algorithm was trained through FE analyses. The effects of the load’s variability and of the damage were decoupled by including a load recognition step in the algorithm, which was accomplished either with an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) or a calibration matrix. Anomaly detection, damage assessment, and localization were performed by using an ANN. The results showed a higher load identification and anomaly detection accuracy using an ANN for the load recognition, and the load set was recognized with a satisfactory accuracy, even in damaged blades. This case study was focused on a real-world subcomponent with complex geometrical features and realistic load conditions, which was not investigated in the literature and provided a promising approach to estimate the performance of a strain-based SHMS.

Abstract

The dissolution of CO2 in seawater in the form of bicarbonate ions is an attractive alternative to storage in geological formations, on the condition that the storage is stable over long periods and does not harm the marine environment. In this work, we focus on the long-term chemical stability of CO2 absorbed in seawater as bicarbonate by monitoring the physico-chemical properties of the solutions (pH, dissolved inorganic carbon and alkalinity) in six different sets of experiments on both natural and artificial seawater lasting up to three months. The bicarbonate treatment of natural seawater consists of mixing it with pre-equilibrated solutions obtained from the reaction of CO2 and Ca(OH)2, with the same pH as natural seawater. This was achieved with a pilot plant working with tons of seawater, while small-scale laboratory experiments were carried out by adding sodium bicarbonate to artificial seawater solutions. If the increase in the overall carbon concentration in the final mixture does not exceed a critical threshold (about 1000–1500 μmol/L), the resulting bicarbonate-rich solutions are found to be stable for over three months.

Abstract

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4 or LFP) is a promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), but side reactions between the electrolyte and the LFP electrode can degrade battery performance. This study introduces an innovative coating strategy, using atomic layer deposition (ALD) to apply a thin (5 nm and 10 nm) Al2O3 layer onto high-mass loading LFP electrodes. Galvanostatic charge–discharge cycling and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to assess the electrochemical performance of coated and uncoated LFP electrodes. The results show that Al2O3 coatings enhance the cycling performance at room temperature (RT) and 40 °C by suppressing side reactions and stabilizing the cathode–electrolyte interface (CEI). The coated LFP retained 67% of its capacity after 100 cycles at 1C and RT, compared to 57% for the uncoated sample. Post-mortem analyses, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), were conducted to investigate the mechanisms behind the improved performance. These analyses reveal that Al2O3 coatings are highly effective in reducing LFP electrode degradation during cycling, demonstrating the potential of ALD Al2O3 coatings to enhance the durability and performance of LFP electrodes in LIBs.

The franciscana dolphin is a small, vulnerable species often caught in artisanal gillnets. This study aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of their acoustic capabilities by using advanced equipment to collect a large dataset of wideband, continuous recordings. We examined the detailed acoustic signals of franciscana dolphins, comparing the sounds from rehabilitated dolphins in captivity with those of wild dolphins near fishing nets. Significant differences in acoustic characteristics were found between neonates and older dolphins, with juvenile and wild dolphins showing similar features. For the first time, repetition patterns in click production were identified, highlighting the importance of understanding the context of these sounds in regards to feeding and communication. This study emphasizes the need for detecting neonates for species protection and suggests the potential for developing acoustic classifiers specific to different age groups. Our findings offer valuable insights for conservation efforts and the development of protection strategies for franciscana dolphins.

Abstract

BackgroundChronic diseases that drive morbidity, mortality, and health care costs are largely influenced by human behavior. Behavioral health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders can often be effectively managed. The majority of patients in need of behavioral health care are seen in primary care, which often has difficulty responding. Some primary care practices are providing integrated behavioral health care (IBH), where primary care and behavioral health providers work together, in one location, using a team-based approach. Research suggests there may be an association between IBH and improved patient outcomes. However, it is often difficult for practices to achieve high levels of integration. The Integrating Behavioral Health and Primary Care study responds to this need by testing the effectiveness of a comprehensive practice-level intervention designed to improve outcomes in patients with multiple chronic medical and behavioral health conditions by increasing the practice's degree of behavioral health integration.MethodsForty-five primary care practices, with existing onsite behavioral health care, will be recruited for this study. Forty-three practices will be randomized to the intervention or usual care arm, while 2 practices will be considered "Vanguard" (pilot) practices for developing the intervention. The intervention is a 24-month supported practice change process including an online curriculum, a practice redesign and implementation workbook, remote quality improvement coaching services, and an online learning community. Each practice's degree of behavioral health integration will be measured using the Practice Integration Profile. Approximately 75 patients with both chronic medical and behavioral health conditions from each practice will be asked to complete a series of surveys to measure patient-centered outcomes. Change in practice degree of behavioral health integration and patient-centered outcomes will be compared between the two groups. Practice-level case studies will be conducted to better understand the contextual factors influencing integration.DiscussionAs primary care practices are encouraged to provide IBH services, evidence-based interventions to increase practice integration will be needed. Abstract

We propose to use ultra-high intensity laser pulses with wavefront rotation (WFR) to produce short, ultra-intense surface plasma waves (SPW) on grating targets for electron acceleration. Combining a smart grating design with optimal WFR conditions identified through simple analytical modeling and particle-in-cell simulation allows to decrease the SPW duration (down to few optical cycles) and increase its peak amplitude. In the relativistic regime, for $I\lambda_0^2=3.4 \times 10^{19}{\rm W/cm^2\mu m^2}$, such SPW are found to accelerate high-charge (few 10's of pC), high-energy (up to 70 MeV) and ultra-short (few fs) electron bunches.

Abstract

Abstract Background Antibiotic overuse in children is a significant public health concern, as it can lead to the emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Although respiratory infections account for most antibiotic prescriptions in children, many of these infections are viral and do not require antibiotics. In this study, we aimed to investigate the use of antibiotics in children with respiratory infections in a primary care setting and to explore the possible role of fever on antibiotic prescription. Methods We conducted a prospective observational study that evaluated preschool children aged 0–5 years who were assessed by their primary care pediatricians for respiratory infectious diseases between October 2019 and March 2021. The study involved 69 public primary care pediatricians and a total of 678 pediatric episodes for respiratory infections. Results Amoxicillin/clavulanate was the most frequently prescribed drug. Bronchitis accounted for most of inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions (73%). Furthermore, the presence of fever was associated with a ~ 300% increase in the likelihood of prescribing antibiotics for respiratory infections that do not typically require antibiotics. Conclusion Our findings emphasize the need for adherence to international guidelines and recommendations in the primary care of children to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use and prevent the development of antibiotic resistance. This study also underscores the potential relevance of new studies to evaluate antibiotic prescription attitudes in other clinical settings and geographical areas.

Abstract

Abstract Background Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality, being twofold to fourfold more common in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) than in individuals without diabetes. However, despite this decade-old knowledge, the identification of a specific prognostic risk biomarker remains particularly challenging. Methods Taking advantage of a large sample of Caucasian patients (n = 529) with a diagnosis of T2DM followed for a median of 16.8 years, the present study was aimed at testing the hypothesis that fasting serum proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) levels could be prognostic for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and all-cause mortality. Results Median levels of PCSK9 were 259.8 ng/mL, being higher in women compared to men and increasing even more in the presence of a complication (e.g., diabetic kidney disease). PCSK9 positively correlated with markers of blood glucose homeostasis (e.g., HbA1c, fasting insulin and HOMA-IR) and the atherogenic lipid profile (e.g., non-HDL-C, apoB and remnant cholesterol). Serum PCSK9 predicted new-onset of MACE, either fatal or non-fatal, only in women (Odds Ratio: 2.26, 95% CI 1.12–4.58) and all-cause mortality only in men (Hazard Ratio: 1.79, 95% CI 1.13–2.82). Conclusions Considering that up to two-thirds of individuals with T2DM develop ASCVD in their lifetime, the assessment of circulating PCSK9 levels can be envisioned within the context of a biomarker-based strategy of risk stratification. However, the sex difference found highlights an urgent need to develop sex-specific risk assessment strategies. Trial registration: It is a retrospective study.

Abstract

The magnetic properties of the two isostructural molecule-based magnets, Ni(NCS)$_{2}$(thiourea)$_{2}$, $S$ = 1, [thiourea = SC(NH$_2$)$_2$] and Co(NCS)$_{2}$(thiourea)$_{2}$, $S$ = 3/2, are characterised using several techniques in order to rationalise their relationship with structural parameters and ascertain magnetic changes caused by substitution of the spin. Zero-field heat capacity and muon-spin relaxation measurements reveal low-temperature long-range ordering in both compounds, in addition to Ising-like ($D < 0$) single-ion anisotropy ($D_{\rm{Co}} \sim$ -100 K, $D_{\rm{Ni}} \sim$ -10 K). Crystal and electronic structure, combined with DC-field magnetometry, affirm highly quasi-one-dimensional behaviour, with ferromagnetic intrachain exchange interactions $J_{\rm{Co}}\approx+4$ K and $J_{\rm{Ni}}\sim+100$ K and weak antiferromagnetic interchain exchange, on the order of $J'$ $\sim-0.1$ K. Electron charge and spin-density mapping reveals through-space exchange as a mechanism to explain the large discrepancy in $J$-values despite, from a structural perspective, the highly similar exchange pathways in both materials. Both species can be compared to the similar compounds $M$Cl$_2$(thiourea)$_4$, $M$ = Ni(II) (DTN) and Co(II) (DTC), where DTN is know to harbour two magnetic field-induced quantum critical points. Direct comparison of DTN and DTC with the compounds studied here shows that substituting the halide Cl$^-$ ion, for the NCS$^-$ ion, results in a dramatic change in both the structural and magnetic properties., Comment: Main text: 13 pages - 11 figures, 2 tables. Abstract

Radiation losses in the interaction of superintense circularly polarized laser pulses with high-density plasmas can lead to the generation of strong quasistatic magnetic fields via absorption of the photon angular momentum (so called inverse Faraday effect). To achieve the magnetic field strength of several Giga Gauss laser intensities $\simeq 10^{24}$W/cm$^2$ are required which brings the interaction to the border between the classical and the quantum regimes. We improve the classical modeling of the laser interaction with overcritical plasma in the "hole boring" regime by using a modified radiation friction force accounting for quantum recoil and spectral cut-off at high energies. The results of analytical calculations and three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that, in foreseeable scenarios, the quantum effects may lead to a decrease of the conversion rate of laser radiation into high-energy photons by a factor 2-3. The magnetic field amplitude is suppressed accordingly, and the magnetic field energy - by more than one order in magnitude. This quantum suppression is shown to reach a maximum at a certain value of intensity, and does not grow with the further increase of intensities. The non monotonic behavior of the quantum suppression factor results from the joint effect of the longitudinal plasma acceleration and the radiation reaction force. Abstract

The basic idea of Frozen-Density Embedding Theory (FDET) is the constrained minimisation of the Hohenberg-Kohn density functional $E^{HK}[\rho]$ performed using the auxiliary functional $E_{v_{AB}}^{FDET}[\Psi_A,\rho_B]$, where $\Psi_A$ is the embedded $N_A$-electron wave-function and $\rho_B(\vec{\mathrm{r}})$ a non-negative function in real space integrating to a given number of electrons $N_B$. This choice of independent variables in the total energy functional $E_{v_{AB}}^{FDET}[\Psi_A,\rho_B]$ makes it possible to treat the corresponding two components of the total density using different methods in multi-level simulations. We demonstrate, for the first time, the applications of FDET using $\rho_B(\vec{\mathrm{r}})$ reconstructed from X-ray diffraction data on a molecular crystal. For eight hydrogen-bonded clusters involving a chromophore (represented with $\Psi_A$) and the glycylglycine molecule (represented as $\rho_B(\vec{\mathrm{r}})$), FDET is used to derive excitation energies. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Health care delivery systems transformed rapidly at the beginning of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic to slow the spread of the virus while identifying novel methods for providing care. In many ways, the pandemic affected both persons with neurologic illness and neurologists. This study describes the perspectives and experiences of community neurologists providing care for patients with neurodegenerative illnesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study with 20 community neurologists from a multisite comparative-effectiveness trial of outpatient palliative care from July 23, 2020, to November 11, 2020. Participants were interviewed individually about the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on their professional and personal lives. Interviews were analyzed with matrix analysis to identify key themes. RESULTS: Four main themes illustrated the impact of the pandemic on community neurologists: (1) challenges of the current political climate, (2) lack of support for new models of care, (3) being on the frontline of suffering, and (4) clinician self-care. Taken together, the themes capture the unusual environment in which community neurologists practice, the lack of clinician trust among some patients, patient and professional isolation, and opportunities to support quality care delivery. CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic and pandemic politics created an environment that made care provision challenging for community neurologists. Efforts to improve care delivery should proactively work to reduce clinician burnout while incorporating support for new models of care adopted due to the pandemic.
