Large language models~(LLMs) demonstrate significant potential to revolutionize software engineering (SE) by exhibiting outstanding performance in SE tasks such as code and document generation. However, the high reliability and risk control requirements in software engineering raise concerns about the lack of interpretability of LLMs. To address this concern, we conducted a study to evaluate the capabilities of LLMs and their limitations for code analysis in SE. We break down the abilities needed for artificial intelligence~(AI) models to address SE tasks related to code analysis into three categories: 1) syntax understanding, 2) static behavior understanding, and 3) dynamic behavior understanding. Our investigation focused on the ability of LLMs to comprehend code syntax and semantic structures, which include abstract syntax trees (AST), control flow graphs (CFG), and call graphs (CG). We employed four state-of-the-art foundational models, GPT4, GPT3.5, StarCoder and CodeLlama-13b-instruct. We assessed the performance of LLMs on cross-language tasks involving C, Java, Python, and Solidity. Our findings revealed that while LLMs have a talent for understanding code syntax, they struggle with comprehending code semantics, particularly dynamic semantics. We conclude that LLMs possess capabilities similar to an Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) parser, demonstrating initial competencies in static code analysis. Furthermore, our study highlights that LLMs are susceptible to hallucinations when interpreting code semantic structures and fabricating nonexistent facts. These results indicate the need to explore methods to verify the correctness of LLM output to ensure its dependability in SE. More importantly, our study provides an initial answer to why the codes generated by LLM are usually syntax-correct but vulnerable.

Existing methods for generating adversarial code examples face several challenges: limted availability of substitute variables, high verification costs for these substitutes, and the creation of adversarial samples with noticeable perturbations. To address these concerns, our proposed approach, RNNS, uses a search seed based on historical attacks to find potential adversarial substitutes. Rather than directly using the discrete substitutes, they are mapped to a continuous vector space using a pre-trained variable name encoder. Based on the vector representation, RNNS predicts and selects better substitutes for attacks. We evaluated the performance of RNNS across six coding tasks encompassing three programming languages: Java, Python, and C. We employed three pre-trained code models (CodeBERT, GraphCodeBERT, and CodeT5) that resulted in a cumulative of 18 victim models. The results demonstrate that RNNS outperforms baselines in terms of ASR and QT. Furthermore, the perturbation of adversarial examples introduced by RNNS is smaller compared to the baselines in terms of the number of replaced variables and the change in variable length. Lastly, our experiments indicate that RNNS is efficient in attacking defended models and can be employed for adversarial training.

To provide real-time parking information, existing studies focus on predicting parking availability, which seems an indirect approach to saving drivers' cruising time. In this paper, we first time propose an on-street parking recommendation (OPR) task to directly recommend a parking space for a driver. To this end, a learn-to-rank (LTR) based OPR model called OPR-LTR is built. Specifically, parking recommendation is closely related to the "turnover events" (state switching between occupied and vacant) of each parking space, and hence we design a highly efficient heterogeneous graph called ESGraph to represent historical and real-time meters' turnover events as well as geographical relations; afterward, a convolution-based event-then-graph network is used to aggregate and update representations of the heterogeneous graph. A ranking model is further utilized to learn a score function that helps recommend a list of ranked parking spots for a specific on-street parking query. The method is verified using the on-street parking meter data in Hong Kong and San Francisco. By comparing with the other two types of methods: prediction-only and prediction-then-recommendation, the proposed direct-recommendation method achieves satisfactory performance in different metrics. Extensive experiments also demonstrate that the proposed ESGraph and the recommendation model are more efficient in terms of computational efficiency as well as saving drivers' on-street parking time.

Inferring past human motion from RGB images is challenging due to the inherent uncertainty of the prediction problem. Thermal images, on the other hand, encode traces of past human-object interactions left in the environment via thermal radiation measurement. Based on this observation, we collect the first RGB-Thermal dataset for human motion analysis, dubbed Thermal-IM. Then we develop a three-stage neural network model for accurate past human pose estimation. Comprehensive experiments show that thermal cues significantly reduce the ambiguities of this task, and the proposed model achieves remarkable performance. In recent years, transformer-based detectors have demonstrated remarkable performance in 2D visual perception tasks. However, their performance in multi-view 3D object detection remains inferior to the state-of-the-art (SOTA) of convolutional neural network based detectors. In this work, we investigate this issue from the perspective of bird's-eye-view (BEV) feature generation. Specifically, we examine the BEV feature generation method employed by the transformer-based SOTA, BEVFormer, and identify its two limitations: (i) it only generates attention weights from BEV, which precludes the use of lidar points for supervision, and (ii) it aggregates camera view features to the BEV through deformable sampling, which only selects a small subset of features and fails to exploit all information. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel BEV feature generation method, dual-view attention, which generates attention weights from both the BEV and camera view. This method encodes all camera features into the BEV feature. By combining dual-view attention with the BEVFormer architecture, we build a new detector named VoxelFormer. Extensive experiments are conducted on the nuScenes benchmark to verify the superiority of dual-view attention and VoxelForer. We observe that even only adopting 3 encoders and 1 historical frame during training, VoxelFormer still outperforms BEVFormer significantly. This study develops the headway control framework in a fully automated road network, as we believe headway of Automated Vehicles (AVs) is another influencing factor to traffic dynamics in addition to conventional vehicle behaviors (e.g. route and departure time choices). Specifically, we aim to search for the optimal time headway between AVs on each link that achieves the network-wide system optimal dynamic traffic assignment (SO-DTA). To this end, the headway-dependent fundamental diagram (HFD) and headway-dependent double queue model (HDQ) are developed to model the effect of dynamic headway on roads, and a dynamic network model is built. It is rigorously proved that the minimum headway could always achieve SO-DTA, yet the optimal headway is non-unique. Motivated by these two findings, this study defines a novel concept of maximin headway, which is the largest headway that still achieves SO-DTA in the network. Mathematical properties regarding maximin headway are analyzed and an efficient solution algorithm is developed. Numerical experiments on both a small and large network verify the effectiveness of the maximin headway control framework as well as the properties of maximin headway. This study sheds light on deriving the desired solution among the non-unique solutions in SO-DTA and provides implications regarding the safety margin of AVs under SO-DTA.

In this paper we present the multilingual language model BLOOM-zh that features enhanced support for Traditional Chinese. BLOOM-zh has its origins in the open-source BLOOM models presented by BigScience in 2022. Starting from released models, we extended the pre-training of BLOOM by additional 7.4 billion tokens in Traditional Chinese and English covering a variety of domains such as news articles, books, encyclopedias, educational materials as well as spoken language. In order to show the properties of BLOOM-zh, both existing and newly created benchmark scenarios are used for evaluating the performance. BLOOM-zh outperforms its predecessor on most Traditional Chinese benchmarks while maintaining its English capability. We release all our models to the research community.

Effective traffic control methods have great potential in alleviating network congestion. Existing literature generally focuses on a single control approach, while few studies have explored the effectiveness of integrated and coordinated control approaches. This study considers two representative control approaches: ramp metering for freeways and perimeter control for homogeneous urban roads, and we aim to develop a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based coordinated control framework for large-scale networks. The main challenges are 1) there is a lack of efficient dynamic models for both freeways and urban roads; 2) the standard DRL method becomes ineffective due to the complex and non-stationary network dynamics. In view of this, we propose a novel meso-macro dynamic network model and first time develop a demonstration-guided DRL method to achieve large-scale coordinated ramp metering and perimeter control. The dynamic network model hybridizes the link and generalized bathtub models to depict the traffic dynamics of freeways and urban roads, respectively. For the DRL method, we incorporate demonstration to guide the DRL method for better convergence by introducing the concept of "teacher" and "student" models. The teacher models are traditional controllers (e.g., ALINEA, Gating), which provide control demonstrations. The student models are DRL methods, which learn from the teacher and aim to surpass the teacher's performance. To validate the proposed framework, we conduct two case studies in a small-scale network and a real-world large-scale traffic network in Hong Kong. The research outcome reveals the great potential of combining traditional controllers with DRL for coordinated control in large-scale networks.

Past research has examined how well these models grasp code syntax, yet their understanding of code semantics still needs to be explored. We extensively analyze seven code models to investigate how code models represent code syntax and semantics. This includes four prominent code pre-trained models (CodeBERT, GraphCodeBERT, CodeT5, and UnixCoder) and three large language models (StarCoder, CodeLlama, and CodeT5+). We have developed four probing tasks to evaluate the models' abilities to learn code syntax and semantics. These tasks focus on reconstructing code syntax and semantic structures-such as AST, CFG, CDG, and DDG - within the models' representation spaces. These structures are fundamental to understanding code. Additionally, we explore the role of syntax tokens in each token representation and the extended dependencies among code tokens. Furthermore, we examine the distribution of attention weights concerning code semantic structures. Through detailed analysis, our results emphasize the strengths and weaknesses of various code models in mastering code syntax and semantics. The findings reveal that these models are proficient in grasping code syntax, effectively capturing the relationships and roles of syntax tokens. However, their ability to encode code semantics shows more variability. This study enriches our understanding of the capabilities of code models in analyzing syntax and semantics. Our findings offer valuable insights for future code model enhancements, helping optimize their application across a range of code-related tasks.

Humans form mental images of 3D scenes to support counterfactual imagination, planning, and motor control. Our abilities to predict the appearance and affordance of the scene from previously unobserved viewpoints aid us in performing manipulation tasks (e.g., 6-DoF kitting) with a level of ease that is currently out of reach for existing robot learning frameworks. In this work, we aim to build artificial systems that can analogously plan actions on top of imagined images. To this end, we introduce Mental Imagery for Robotic Affordances (MIRA), an action reasoning framework that optimizes actions with novel-view synthesis and affordance prediction in the loop. Given a set of 2D RGB images, MIRA builds a consistent 3D scene representation, through which we synthesize novel orthographic views amenable to pixel-wise affordances prediction for action optimization. We illustrate how this optimization process enables us to generalize to unseen out-of-plane rotations for 6-DoF robotic manipulation tasks given a limited number of demonstrations, paving the way toward machines that autonomously learn to understand the world around them for planning actions., Comment: CoRL 2022, webpage: https://yenchenlin.me/mira

Quantum simulation of different exotic topological phases of quantum matter on a noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) processor is attracting growing interest. Here, we develop a one-dimensional 43-qubit superconducting quantum processor, named as Chuang-tzu, to simulate and characterize emergent topological states. By engineering diagonal Aubry-Andr$\acute{\mathrm{e}}$-Harper (AAH) models, we experimentally demonstrate the Hofstadter butterfly energy spectrum. Using Floquet engineering, we verify the existence of the topological zero modes in the commensurate off-diagonal AAH models, which have never been experimentally realized before. Remarkably, the qubit number over 40 in our quantum processor is large enough to capture the substantial topological features of a quantum system from its complex band structure, including Dirac points, the energy gap's closing, the difference between even and odd number of sites, and the distinction between edge and bulk states. Molecular property prediction is essential for drug discovery. In recent years, deep learning methods have been introduced to this area and achieved state-of-the-art performances. However, most of existing methods ignore the intrinsic relations between molecular properties which can be utilized to improve the performances of corresponding prediction tasks. In this paper, we propose a new approach, namely Physics properties Enhanced Molecular Property prediction (PEMP), to utilize relations between molecular properties revealed by previous physics theory and physical chemistry studies. Specifically, we enhance the training of the chemical and physiological property predictors with related physics property prediction tasks. We design two different methods for PEMP, respectively based on multi-task learning and transfer learning. Both methods include a model-agnostic molecule representation module and a property prediction module. In our implementation, we adopt both the state-of-the-art molecule embedding models under the supervised learning paradigm and the pretraining paradigm as the molecule representation module of PEMP, respectively. Background: Quantitative prediction of the adolescents' spherical equivalent based on their variable-length historical vision records. Methods: From October 2019 to March 2022, we examined binocular uncorrected visual acuity, axial length, corneal curvature, and axial of 75,172 eyes from 37,586 adolescents aged 6-20 years in Chengdu, China. 80\% samples consist of the training set and the remaining 20\% form the testing set. Time-Aware Long Short-Term Memory was used to quantitatively predict the adolescents' spherical equivalent within two and a half years. Result: The mean absolute prediction error on the testing set was 0.273-0.257 for spherical equivalent, ranging from 0.189-0.160 to 0.596-0.473 if we consider different lengths of historical records and different prediction durations. Conclusions: Time-Aware Long Short-Term Memory was applied to captured the temporal features in irregularly sampled time series, which is more in line with the characteristics of real data and thus has higher applicability, and helps to identify the progression of myopia earlier.
