Abstract

The zwf gene of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was cloned and characterized to determine the function of the gene product to P. aeruginosa. The gene codes for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and is induced in the presence of glycerol and glucose. Mutant strains are not able to utilize mannitol as a carbon source. The gene also protects the organism against the harmful effects of oxygen radicals generated from paraquat.

Abstract

The A4 and C6 ferric uptake regulator (Fur) mutants of Pseudomonas aeruginosa are incapable of proper siderophore-mediated iron uptake and aerobic growth. This is due to a decrease in total superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activity. The mutants have a higher manganese-SOD (Mn-SOD) activity, contain altered Fur proteins, and constitutively produce the siderophores pyochelin and pyoverdin. Mutants of strain PAO1, with normal pyochelin and defective pyoverdin biosynthesis, have increased Mn-SOD activity. Sensitivity to redox cycling agent paraquat and hydrogen peroxide is greater in the mutants.

Abstract

Comparison of inactivation of poliovirus type 1 by 1 N HCl, 1 N NaOH, 0.5 and 1.0 mg of free chlorine per liter, and UV light using cell culture and seminested PCR revealed that PCR can detect intact nucleic acid sequences. The decontamination procedures used in environmental virology can make 1.64 x 10 squared PFU of poliovirus type 1 per ml viral nucleic acid undetectable by PCR only after exposure to HCl for 45 minutes, to NaOH for 3 minutes and to 1.0 and 0.5 mg of free chlorine per liter for 3-6 min.

Abstract

This study relates a firm’s cash holdings and their value to the board of directors’ level of education. Using a sample of firms on the Taiwan Stock Exchange during the period from 2006 to 2012, we find that firms with a highly educated board tend to hold more cash and are associated with a higher value of cash. This fact is especially evident among financially constrained firms. Our findings suggest that highly educated boards provide more efficient monitoring and advisory functions, and thus complement corporate governance.

Abstract

Background: Breast cancer (BRCA) is a malignant tumor with high morbidity and mortality, which is a threat to women's health worldwide. Ferroptosis is closely related to the occurrence and development of breast cancer. Here, we aimed to establish a ferroptosis-related prognostic gene signature for predicting patients' survival.Methods: Gene expression profile and corresponding clinical information of patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. The Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO)-penalized Cox regression analysis model was utilized to construct a multigene signature. The Kaplan-Meier (K-M) and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted to validate the predictive effect of the prognostic signature. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes, Genomes (KEGG) pathway and single-sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA) were performed for patients between the high-risk and low-risk groups divided by the median value of risk score.Results: We constructed a prognostic signature consisted of nine ferroptosis-related genes (ALOX15, CISD1, CS, GCLC, GPX4, SLC7A11, EMC2, G6PD and ACSF2). The Kaplan-Meier curves validated the fine predictive accuracy of the prognostic signature (p < 0.001). The area under the curve (AUC) of the ROC curves manifested that the ferroptosis-related signature had moderate predictive power. GO and KEGG functional analysis revealed that immune-related responses were largely enriched, and immune cells, including activated dendritic cells (aDCs), dendritic cells (DCs), T-helper 1 (Th1), were higher in high-risk groups (p < 0.001). Oppositely, type I IFN response and type II IFN response were lower in high-risk groups (p < 0.001).Conclusion: Our study indicated that the ferroptosis-related prognostic signature gene could serve as a novel biomarker for predicting breast cancer patients' prognosis. Furthermore, we found that immunotherapy might play a vital role in therapeutic schedule based on the level and difference of immune-related cells and pathways in different risk groups for breast cancer patients. Abstract

This study examines the causality between the returns of convertible bonds and stocks during periods of conversion-price resets and general pre-reset in Taiwan. Profits, stock turnover, and firm size affect the significance of causality. The empirical results indicate that the returns of convertible bonds always lag behind the stock returns for general pre-reset periods. However, for reset periods, the numbers of companies for which convertible bonds lead ahead of the stock market increases. The causality reversal is based on uprising liquidity and information transparency. These results provide evidence that various reset price mechanisms affect financing market efficiency.

Abstract

This paper investigates the characteristic differences of variables relating to financial performance and corporate governance of companies in Taiwan implementing the policies of cash refund capital reduction or stocks repurchase, under considerations of market situations of bull and bear markets. Conversely, this paper employs Logistic regression to analyze how financial performance and corporate governance variables affect company decisions to choose the policies of cash fund capital reduction or stocks repurchase. According to the statistics, companies are more likely to conduct cash refund capital reduction in a bullish market period and stock repurchase in a bear market. The evidence results find that, companies have better profitability, lower debt ratio, higher foreign ownership, and increased potential growth opportunities in the period of cash refund capital reduction. Especially, in a bear market, the excellent characteristics of the sample company can be better highlighted by cash refund capital reduction. In the period of stock repurchase, the characteristic of a relatively higher level of privy ownership can be observed. According to the regression results, companies tend to adopt cash refund capital reduction when corporate profitability is better and have higher levels of foreign ownership. A company with greater cash flow per share and equity pledge ratio is more likely to adopt stock repurchase.

Abstract

Long persistent phosphors (LPPs) have attracted enduring attention owing to their wide applications. However, the discovery of LPPs is thus far largely the results of trial and error. Here, theory‐guided defect tuning through topochemical reactions is demonstrated for accelerated discovery of emerging LPPs. First‐principles calculations are employed to identify the thermodynamic charge‐transition levels of different defect states, which help examine whether the candidate structure is a suitable host for afterglow. Rationally tuning the species and concentrations of defects through topochemical reactions is then illustrated, which leads to discovery of Pr3+‐doped LaPO4 featuring ultraviolet C afterglow with a lasting time of over 2 h. Such a strategy, in conjunction with advanced characterizations including high‐resolution synchrotron X‐ray diffraction, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, and electron spin resonance, suggests a radical‐involved afterglow mechanism. Importantly, it is illustrated that this concept can be extended for the discovery of more LPPs. It is suggested that theory‐guided defect engineering enabled by topochemical reactions can be used as a powerful tool to accelerate discovery of novel LPPs with much clearer afterglow mechanisms, with implications even for the design of other optoelectronic materials. Abstract

Based on The Observing System Research and Predictability Experiment (THORPEX) Interactive Grand Global Ensemble (TIGGE) dataset, using various verification methods, the performances of four typical ensemble prediction systems (EPSs) from the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the US National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) are compared preliminarily. The verification focuses on the 500-hPa geopotential height forecast fields in the mid- and high-latitude Eurasian region during July 2007 and January 2008. The results show that for the forecast of 500-hPa geopotential height, in both summer and winter, the ECMWF EPS exhibits the highest forecast skill, followed by that of NCEP, then by JMA, and the CMA EPS gets in the last. The better system behaviors benefit from the better combination of the following: data assimilation system, numerical models, initial perturbations, and stochastic model perturbations. For the medium-range forecast, the ensemble forecasting can effectively filter out the forecast errors associated with the initial uncertainty, and the reliability and resolution (the two basic attributions of the forecast system) of these EPSs are better in winter than in summer. Specifically, the CMA EPS has certain advantage on the reliability of ensemble probabilistic forecasts. The forecasts are easy to be underestimated by the JMA EPS. The deficiency of ensemble spread, which is the universal problem of EPS, also turns up in this study. Although the systems of ECMWF, NCEP, and JMA have more ensemble members, this problem cannot be ignored. This preliminary comparison helps to further recognize the prediction capability of the four EPSs over the Eurasian region, provides important references for wide applications of the TIGGE dataset, and supplies useful information for improving the CMA EPS.

Abstract

Aurivillius phases have been routinely known as excellent ferroelectrics and have rarely been deemed as materials that luminesce in the near‐infrared (NIR) region. Herein, it is shown that the Aurivillius phases can demonstrate broadband NIR luminescence that covers telecommunication and biological optical windows. Experimental characterization of the model system Bi2.14Sr0.75Ta2O9−x, combined with theoretical calculations, help to establish that the NIR luminescence originates from defective [Bi2O2]2+ layers. Importantly, the generality of this finding is validated based on observations of a rich bank of NIR luminescence characteristics in other Aurivillius phases. This work highlights that incorporating defects into infinitely repeating [Bi2O2]2+ layers can be used as a powerful tool to space‐selectively impart unusual luminescence emitters to Aurivillius‐phase ferroelectrics, which not only offers an optical probe for the examination of defect states in ferroelectrics, but also provides possibilities for coupling of the ferroelectric property with NIR luminescence.
