Excavation in advance of housing development at Basing View, Basingstoke, revealed the remains of an Early Roman enclosed settlement that possibly originated in the Late Iron Age and was occupied to the early 2nd century. The settlement was fairly low status, focussed on mixed farming practices, but was notable for the presence of a possible sunkenfeatured building with a baby burial. The site adds to current knowledge of the Late Iron Age/Early Roman settlement archaeology of the area south of Silchester (Calleva Atrebatum). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This report describes excavations at Basing Grange, Basing House, Hampshire, between 1999 and 2006. It embraces the 'Time Team' investigations in Grange Field, adjacent to the Great Barn, which were superseded and amplified by the work of the Basingstoke Archaeological & Historical Society, supervised by David Allen. This revealed the foundations of a 'hunting lodge' or mansion built in the 1670s and demolished, and effectively 'lost', in the mid-18th century. Beneath this residence were the remains of agricultural buildings, earlier than and contemporary with the nearby Great Barn, which were destroyed during the English Civil War. The report contains a detailed appraisal of the pottery, glass and clay tobacco pipes from the site and draws attention to the remarkable window leads that provide a clue to the mansion's date of construction. A community archaeology project (Dig Basing) was carried out by the Basingstoke Archaeological and Historical Society within the village of Old Basing, Hampshire during 2014-17 to discover more about settlement and social and economic patterns pre-1900 and to simultaneously engage the local community with archaeology. A total of 48 test pits of 1 x 1m were excavated across the village and over 16,000 artefacts recovered. The project provided a wealth of information that adds to and amplifies existing data, particularly medieval and later. Evidence for prehistoric and Roman occupation was slight but it implied a late Mesolithic/early Neolithic focus along the River Loddon. A lack of early medieval artefacts meant that it was not until the 11th century that the archaeological record became increasingly visible. Post-Norman conquest settlement was initially focussed along The Street, where settlement at the northern junction of Milkingpen Lane appeared largely discrete from that further south in the vicinity of St Mary's Church, before later expansion joined the two areas. Important evidence for post-Conquest metalworking, probably smelting, was found to the south-west of Oliver's Battery. A decline in amounts of medieval pottery, mid-period, may be attributable to the ravages of the Black Death, but from c. 1550 the situation had reversed, coinciding with increased occupation at Basing House. Subsequent rebuilding of village properties after the destructions of the Civil War saw Tudor brick robbed from the ruins of Basing House. Thereafter new pottery types and other goods reflected the new opportunities that arrived with the construction of the canal through the village in the 18th century and the railway in the 19th century. Artefacts recovered suggest a low to middling status, with infrequent indicators for greater wealth despite the existence of, at various times, the Norman ringwork, Basing House and the hunting lodge at the Grange. Thiazolidinediones are commonly used anti-diabetic drugs. Owing to the antiinflammatory action of TZDs as a result of there action on the PPAR gamma receptor and a proposed action on the prostaglandins, these drugs can be tried in the acute exacerbations of COPD that are also commonly found among diabetic patients. An experimental study of one week was carried out at animal house of Army Medical College, Rawalpindi on a total of 50 guinea pigs (both male and female) of Dunkin Hartley variety, weighing 500 to 600 grams. An isometric volume transducer was used to measure the histamine induced contractions of the smooth muscles. In the similar way contractions with pioglitazone in the presense of histamine, contractions with indomethacin which is a prostaglandin antagonist, in the presence of histamine and mixed effect of pioglitazone along with indomethacin in the presence of histamine was evaluated. Pioglitazone produced significant reduction in histamine-induced contractions of the normal tracheal muscle strips thus identifying its relaxant effect on the tracheal smooth muscles. The contractions of the tracheal muscles were increased when indomethacin was used. The pioglitazone induced relaxation was also reduced in the group pre-treated with indomethacin, thus suggesting an identifiable role of prostaglandins in the relaxant effect of TZDs on the smooth muscles. The nineteenth century witnessed the spread and development of a number of northern Nguni kingdoms throughout southern Africa. Central to the success and stability of these kingdoms was the regimental system. A critical aspect of this system was the military settlements or amakhanda (singular ikhanda). These settlements provided housing to soldiers, but also acted as centres of royal authority. Due to the specific function and nature of these settlements, they had a settlement organisation and layout that differed from that of a family homestead (umuzi). This study identifies a number of differences that may enable archaeologists to distinguish between amakhanda and other settlements. An ikhanda was organised into four structural sections, each of which was used for very specific purposes: the central enclosure; regimental housing; the great isigodlo; and the isigodlo. Amakhanda represent a fundamental change that had occurred among the northern Nguni, a change that ultimately resulted in the formation of the Zulu kingdom and the reshaping of the socio-political organisation of southern Africa. The descending aorta (DAo) in patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) after Norwood procedure is frequenty enlarged and exhibits increased stiffness. Such findings of previous studies still remain unexplained given the fact that the DAo is not involved in the Norwood operation. We studied five HLHS patients with DAo dilatation (aged: 2.9–15.1 years (y), median 9.0 y), four HLHS patients without DAo dilatation (aged: 3.5–9.7 years, median 6.45 y) and 7 healthy controls (aged 6.3–41.6 y, median 26.0 y) using cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging with acquisition of cine images, contrast-enhanced angiograms and 4D flow. 4D flow data were analyzed based on in-house developed analysis software to quantify vortical flow patterns in terms of vorticity. All patients with DAo dilatation presented with a caliber reduction between the proximal and distal aortic arch of more than 40% (median reduction 71%, range 43%–79%) and with increased z-scores of the DAo. Vorticity in the DAo of patients with DAo dilatation (median: −24 s−1, range: −26 s−1 - -8 s−1) was significantly increased in magnitude compared to controls (median: 0 s−1, range: −2 – +2) (p < 0.01). Vorticity in the DAo of patients without DAo dilatatation was not significantly increased compared to controls. DAo z-scores were associated with increased vorticity. The findings of signficiantly increased vorticity and its association with increased DAo z-scores can potentially explain vascular alterations in the DAo of HLHS patients. With the nationalist government -- Kuomintang (KMT) -- retreating from mainland China in 1949, some 600,000 military personnel relocated to Taiwan. The military seized former Japanese colonial properties and built its own settlements, establishing temporary military dependents' villages called juancun. When the prospect of counter-attacking the mainland vanished, the KMT had to face the reality of settling permanently in Taiwan. How, then, did the KMT's authoritarian power enter the everyday lives of its own support group? In this article I will focus on the coercive elements of KMT authoritarianism, which permeated these military villages in Taiwan. I will look at the coercive mechanisms through the analytical lens of Foucauldian discipline. I argue that disciplinary techniques such as surveillance, disciplining of the body and the senses, as well as the creation of morality regimes played an important role in the co-optation of village residents into KMT authoritarianism by normalising and naturalising it. Despite its dependence on military investment, large segments of the Sunbelt have always expressed ambivalence toward military housing. From 1941 to 1973, real estate interests served as the primary resistance to the construction of military housing; however, during the 1970s, due to economic changes, tax revolts, New Right fiscal and social policies, and the transformation to the all-volunteer force (AVF), opposition to military housing transferred from real estate interests to homeowners. From 1979 to 1990, the Navy’s attempt to construct military family housing in San Diego encountered angry homeowners who resented the tax exempt status of housing and accused military households of overburdening school infrastructure, reducing property values, and spreading social dysfunction. Demographic changes resulting from the AVF yielded more families and greater ethnic and racial diversity, which failed to align with suburban norms and thereby marginalized service households socially and politically. The British Military Covenant can be located in and from many sources and from 2011 onwards in primary legislation. This article argues that the provision of military housing amounts to an early test of how the military covenant is understood and used by those involved in defence policy, and those in the armed forces affected by it. It finds that housing was a prominent feature of how service personnel understood how they were valued, but was not explicitly understood as a covenant issue by those personnel or the officials in charge of the Defence Estates. We locate three reasons for this: (1) the covenant has been poorly translated from aspiration into policy practice, (2) the covenant is unevenly understood across its stakeholders which has the effect of generating disappointment through misaligned expectations, (3) those engaged in the reform process surrounding the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) saw the covenant as a means to energise reform. Ultimately housing was seen as a dry and technocratic business area and thus an issue ripe for being refracted through the covenant was ultimately left outside of its remit. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
