"To evaluate the effect of sitting vs left lateral decubitus position during sub-arachnoid block on occurrence of post-dural puncture headache in patients undergoing lower segment caesarean section. Aims and Objectives: The present study was carried out in 200 patients of ASA grade I/II, posted for lower segment caesarean section from October 2023 to March 2024 at People's College of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Bhopal with aims of: • To find out role of the position of patient in the occurrence of postdural puncture headache. • Incidence of PDPH in sitting position vs left lateral decubitus position. • Onset and duration of PDPH in both positions. • Comparison of ease of technique in both positions. • Haemodynamic parameters of the patients in both positions. Methodology: 200 patients of ASA grade I and II between the ages of 18 and 40 years, who underwent lower segment caesarean section. Patients were randomly divided into two groups: 1. Group A (n=100): Patients given subarachnoid block in sitting position. 2. Group B (n=100): Patients given subarachnoid block in left lateral decubitus position • STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: The categorical data will be presented as numbers % and compared by Chi-square test. The quantitative data will be presented as mean ± standard deviation and compared by Student's t-test (P < 0.05 as statistically significant). • CONCLUSION: It is unclear as to whether the position of the patient during subarachnoid blockade leads to the occurrence of PDPH. Introduction: This study provides the clinical profile of various ophthalmic manifestations in patients known to be infected with pulmonary and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis at Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences. Methodology: This study, conducted in the ophthalmology OPD and DOTS centre of Pravara Institute of medical sciences during a period of 4 years from June 2017 to June 2021, aimed to comprehensively analyze the ophthalmic manifestations of tuberculosis patients. All the diagnosed cases of pulmonary(130) and extrapulmonary(72) tuberculosis were evaluated by ophthalmologist for any ocular manifestations. Results: The study revealed Out of 202 cases, 32 (15.8%) cases had ocular manifestations including 12 cases (9%) of pulmonary and 20 cases (27.7%) of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. The most common Ocular manifestations seen were Anterior Uveitis(31.25%) followed by episcleritis(21.87%) to rare ones being pan uveitis(3.12%) and Lateral Rectus palsy(3.12%). Ocular manifestations were more common in extra-pulmonary Tb than pulmonary TB and more common in males than females. Conclusion: Tuberculosis is of major concern in rural population of India. Ocular manifestations vary greatly ranging from Mild episcleritis to potentially blinding posterior uveitis and disabling Lateral Rectus palsy. Neuroimmunology is an interdisciplinary branch of biomedical science that emerges from the intersection of studies on the nervous system and the immune system. The complex interplay between the two systems has long been recognized. Research efforts directed at the underlying functional interface and associated pathophysiology, however, have garnered attention only in recent decades. In this narrative review, we highlight significant advances in research on neuroimmune interplay and modulation. A particular focus is on early- and middle-career neuroimmunologists in China and their achievements in frontier areas of "neuroimmune interface", "neuro-endocrine-immune network and modulation", "neuroimmune interactions in diseases", "meningeal lymphatic and glymphatic systems in health and disease", and "tools and methodologies in neuroimmunology research". Background: Spinal meningiomas, originating from arachnoid cap cells, primarily manifest in the intradural extramedullary region, commonly favouring the thoracic area, albeit occurrences in the cervical, lumbar, and exceptionally rare sacral regions have been noted. Among tumours in this location, meningiomas, neurofibromas, and schwannomas prevail. MRI serves as the preferred imaging modality due to its ability to often reveal the distinctive dural origin of meningiomas. Microdissection and resection stand as the established gold standard for treating spinal meningiomas. Materials and methods: This study, conducted at the Sheri-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Soura Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, India, spanned approximately 10 years from August 2009 to July 2017 retrospectively and August 2017 to July 2019 prospectively. It encompassed patients diagnosed with spinal meningiomas, evaluated through comprehensive history-taking, clinical examinations, biochemical assessments, and radiological studies. Surgical interventions predominantly involved laminectomy, aiming for gross total or subtotal tumour resection using a posterior approach. Postoperative complications, such as CSF leaks and wound infections, were monitored, and the duration of hospitalization was recorded from the surgery date to discharge. Results: The results showed a mean patient age of 44 years, with the youngest being 16 years old and the eldest 70 years old. Most patients (40.90%) fell within the 41-50 age group, with 22.72% in the 51-60 age bracket. Among the 22 patients, females comprised 68.18%, resulting in a female-to-male ratio of 2.1:1. The most prevalent symptoms were pain (77%) and weakness (63%), followed by bladder dysfunction (27%). Tumors were primarily located in the thoracic region (68%), with other occurrences in the cervicothoracic (18%), thoracolumbar (9%), and cervical (4.54%) areas. Posterior surgical approaches were utilized in 91% of cases, with the remaining 9% employing an anterior approach. Tumour sizes varied, with 22.72% smaller than 2 cm and 77.27% larger, having a mean greatest diameter of 2.9 cm. Postoperative complications were observed in 9.09% of patients, with CSF leaks and wound infections being the major concerns, while 91% experienced no complications. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study illustrates spinal meningiomas as slow-growing tumors with a subtle onset, typically appearing in the 4th to 5th decade, and exhibiting a female predominance with a 2:1 ratio. Pain emerges as the most prevalent presenting symptom. Surgery stands as the primary treatment, albeit accompanied by potential postoperative complications such as wound infections, CSF leaks, or bowel and bladder dysfunctions. Interdisciplinary sciences have paved the way for the creation of new technologies that could potentially alter how things were conventionally done. Biotechnology and nanotechnology have resulted in the creation of various techniques, one of which is upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), which can be conjugated with biomaterials for added functionality. UCNPs work based on optical phenomena referred to as anti-Stoke shift, wherein the nanoparticle absorbs light of a high wavelength (lower energy) and emits light having a lower wavelength (higher energy). This ability to provide luminescent signals when irradiated with near-infrared (NIR) light sources is particularly useful as a consequence of its minimal toxicity and high depth of penetration. When coupled with the appropriate biomaterials, the UCNPs can conjugate with the target under study and via quenching/luminescence recovery and quantitative and qualitative tests can be performed relating to the target molecule, in vivo. These UCNP-nanomaterial structures have proven to be very useful in the in vivo image detection, diagnostic, therapeutic as well as combined approaches for disease treatment, drug delivery, disease diagnosis etc. This review aims at providing an in-depth explanation about the origins of UCNPs, how they may be synthesized, their mechanisms of upconversion (UC), their adaptability and flexibility under in vivo conditions, and the future of the field. Overall representation of Upconverting Nanoparticle (UCNP) synthesis followed by the currently researched/applied modes of utilization for the same. The drug delivery aspect involves loading the porous layer over the UCNP with the required drug while the bio-imaging and therapeutic application (via photothermal therapy and/or photodynamic therapy) involves irradiation of the nanoparticles by tissue-penetrating near-infrared radiation (NIR). Objectives: This article aims to investigate the saliva microbiome in patients with immunoglobulin G4–related disease (IgG4RD) compared with primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS). Methods: Saliva samples were collected from 11 IgG4RD and 11 SS patients who visited IMSUT Hospital, The Institute of Medical Science, The University of Tokyo. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was extracted from the samples, and primers were used to amplify the V3–V4 regions of bacterial and archaeal 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, which was then analysed by paired-end sequencing. Amplicon reads were processed using QIIME2 to generate representative sequences. The Greengenes database was used to identify the bacterial flora in each sample and compare them between groups. Results: The IgG4RD and SS groups exhibited differences in bacterial diversity. Cluster analyses of attributed classification groups by species and disease showed that IgG4RD and SS cases formed individual clusters. Significant differences in relative abundance between IgG4RD and SS were observed for the following organisms: Mogibacterium (P = .0051), Solobacterium moorei (P = .0195), Slackia (P = .0356), and Moryella (P = .0455). Conclusions: Salivary microbiome analysis of IgG4RD and SS patients revealed significantly higher relative proportions of Mogibacterium, S. moorei, Slackia, and Moryella bacteria in IgG4RD compared with SS. With the advancement of large-scale omics technologies, particularly transcriptomics data sets on drug and treatment response repositories available in public domain, toxicogenomics has emerged as a key field in safety pharmacology and chemical risk assessment. Traditional statistics-based bioinformatics analysis poses challenges in its application across multidimensional toxicogenomic data, including administration time, dosage, and gene expression levels. Motivated by the visual inspection workflow of field experts to augment their efficiency of screening significant genes to derive meaningful insights, together with the ability of deep neural architectures to learn the image signals, we developed DTox, a deep neural network-based in visio approach. Using the Percellome toxicogenomics database, instead of utilizing the numerical gene expression values of the transcripts (gene probes of the microarray) for dose-time combinations, DTox learned the image representation of 3D surface plots of distinct time and dosage data points to train the classifier on the experts' labels of gene probe significance. DTox outperformed statistical threshold-based bioinformatics and machine learning approaches based on numerical expression values. This result shows the ability of image-driven neural networks to overcome the limitations of classical numeric value-based approaches. Further, by augmenting the model with explainability modules, our study showed the potential to reveal the visual analysis process of human experts in toxicogenomics through the model weights. While the current work demonstrates the application of the DTox model in toxicogenomic studies, it can be further generalized as an in visio approach for multi-dimensional numeric data with applications in various fields in medical data sciences. Bioactive compounds extracted from plants can provide wide health benefits. However, some molecules have limited applications as pharmaceuticals due to their limited solubility, poor bioavailability, and low stability when exposed to environmental factors. Their integration in formulations that can deliver them to physiological targets while preserving their biological activity can enhance their usage in improving human health. This research provides a delivery system design to enhance the solubility, stability and to mask the bitter taste of salicin. Thus, a novel salicin-β-cyclodextrin complex was prepared and analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, FTIR, Raman and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The analytical and computational methods provided clear and distinct evidence for inclusion of salicin within the β-cyclodextrin cavity and brought important findings for the characterization of the inclusion complex. The present study showed that salicin and β-cyclodextrin can form inclusion complexes, both in solution and in solid state, and that the inclusion of salicin in the cavity of β-cyclodextrin leads to the improvement of its solubility and stability. Thus, the study communicates both qualitative and quantitative knowledge about the preparation of a new salicin-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex suggesting its potential applications in pharmaceutical industry and medical sciences, as formulations with better compliance for the patient, with increased bioavailability, and easier control of dosage. Background: Traditional and evidence-based medicines, as seen depicted throughout human history, reportedly first begin with the application of medicinal plants, animal products, or inorganic minerals as a basic framework towards effectively engineering the prototypes generally aligned to pharmaceuticals and medical nutrition. The growing global trend of complementary treatments for glaucoma can be explained by the intraocular pressure (IOP)-independent mechanisms of the disease and its interpretation as a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. Unfortunately, the categorical positions of the major fields of applied popular complementary therapies and their relation to glaucoma are consistently neglected. Methods: In consideration of bibliographic resources, the most well-known online scientific databases were searched. Conclusion: The rising popularity and the trends of products coming onto the market cannot escape the attention of pharmacists and ophthalmologists, as their patients suffering from eye diseases are also increasingly looking for such medicinal products. Most of them still lack knowledge of the appropriate evidence and side effect profiles. Our proposed systematic charts demonstrate the position of each mainstream complementary therapy throughout the applied medical sciences and are distinctively unique; we could not find any similar relevant illustration or resource among the published international literature. Clinical studies based on coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) images suggest that the presence of ramus intermedius (RI) in the left coronary artery (LCA) may aggravate the atherosclerotic depositions in the furcation region. In this study, computational fluid dynamics simulations are performed in patient-specific coronary models consisting of bifurcating LCA and two models having trifurcating LCA. Three-dimensional patient-specific coronary models are constructed from CCTA images obtained from North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, Shillong, India. Results indicate that the flow redistribution happens in the left coronary branch due to the presence of RI and the flow to left anterior descending artery (LAD) is reduced significantly. Recirculation and flow separation regions are observed in the proximal parts of the LAD and left circumflex artery for trifurcation geometries. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of wall shear stress-based descriptors suggests that the presence of the intermediate branch may affect the atherosusceptibility of the proximal region of LAD. The study indicates that the presence of RI may act as a contributing factor for plaque development and progression in the furcation region and proximal parts of LAD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Estimating treatment (or policy or intervention) effects on a single individual or unit has become increasingly important in health and biomedical sciences. One method to estimate these effects is the synthetic control method, which constructs a synthetic control, a weighted average of control units that best matches the treated unit's pre-treatment outcomes and other relevant covariates. The intervention's impact is then estimated by comparing the post-intervention outcomes of the treated unit and its synthetic control, which serves as a proxy for the counterfactual outcome had the treated unit not experienced the intervention. The augmented synthetic control method, a recent adaptation of the synthetic control method, relaxes some of the synthetic control method's assumptions for broader applicability. While synthetic controls have been used in a variety of fields, their use in public health and biomedical research is more recent, and newer methods such as the augmented synthetic control method are underutilized. This paper briefly describes the synthetic control method and its application, explains the augmented synthetic control method and its differences from the synthetic control method, and estimates the effects of an antimalarial initiative in Mozambique using both the synthetic control method and the augmented synthetic control method to highlight the advantages of using the augmented synthetic control method to analyze the impact of interventions implemented in a single region. Background: The complex framework of the human foot enables movement and weight support. The os peroneum (OP) is a sesamoid bone located in the tendon of peroneus longus. Though tiny, it plays crucial roles in foot movement and arch stability injuries to the tendon are significant, and the OP itself can fracture, dislocate, or impinge. Its presence, size, and even histological type influence the proper functioning of the foot. Studying this sesamoid bone, with its variable prevalence and morphology, can fill gaps in foot and ankle pathology research. Aims and Objectives: To analyze the prevalence, morphology, morphometry, and histology of OP in human adult cadavers in the South Indian population. Materials and Methods: Forty-two formalin-fixed human adult cadaveric free lower limbs were selected and studied from the Department of Anatomy, Pushpagiri Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Tiruvalla, Kerala. The prevalence of OP in peroneus longus tendons (PLT) and its various configurations were carefully observed, along with their histological types, and then statistical analysis of the data was done using SPSS version 20. Results: Thirty-nine out of the forty-two free lower limbs showed the presence of an OP bearing a smooth oval facet, except for one OP with a round facet. All OP were invariably present in the tunnel for PLT on the plantar surface of the cuboid bone. Three different histological types of this tissue were observed, i.e., osseous, cartilaginous, and fibrous. Conclusion: The present study has attempted to fill the gap in the research data regarding OP in the adult South Indian population. In addition, the knowledge of OP and its configuration in PLT could provide a better radiological and clinical approach to mid- and fore-foot pathologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our analysis uncovers the increasing interest in MMQA over time, with diverse domains such as natural language processing, computer vision, and large language models contributing to the research. The AI methods used in multimodal question answering in the medical domain are a prominent focus, accompanied by applicability of MMQA to the medical field. MMQA in the medical field has its unique challenges due to the sensitive nature of medicine as a science dealing with human health. The survey reveals MMQA research to be in an exploratory stage, discussing different methods, datasets, and potential business models. Future research is expected to focus on application development by big tech companies, such as MedPalm. The survey aims to provide insights into the current state of multimodal medical question answering, highlighting the growing interest from academia and industry. This article explores the characteristics and curative efficacy of multiple pulmonary hematogenous metastases (MPHM) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Introduction: The appendix, once considered a vestigial structure, is now recognised as a site of diverse pathologies beyond simple appendicitis through a systematic analysis of published literature and case studies. The diagnosis of appendiceal lesions is still a clinical phenomenon and a constant struggle. The gold standard for diagnosing appendiceal lesions, however, is meticulous histopathological examination. Aim: To determine the histopathological distribution of all the appendiceal lesions and to identify the rare and unusual histopathological findings in appendectomy specimens received at a tertiary care Centre. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Pathology at Karpaga Vinayaga Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, India for a duration of 10 years, from August 2013 to August 2023. From the histopathological records of 832 appendectomies, 40 specimens with unusual histopathological findings were identified and analysed in this study. Relevant recorded data from all the appendiceal specimens reported during the study period, with special reference to age, sex, and histopathological findings, were retrieved and evaluated retrospectively. Corresponding slides and specimens were reviewed. The data were presented in the form of frequency tables and percentages. The analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 20.0. Results: Out of 832 appendectomy specimens, there were 485 (58.29%) cases of acute appendicitis, 244 (29.33%) cases of chronic appendicitis, 59 (7.09%) cases of subacute appendicitis, and 4 (0.48%) cases of gangrenous appendicitis. Unusual histopathology findings were noted in 40 cases (4.81%). Introduction: Incorporating the concepts of hyperviscosity, platelet hyperactivity, and age-related risk of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS), a new score has been put forward-the Mean platelet volume-Age-total Protein-Haematocrit (MAPH) score, which can determine the increased thrombotic tendency associated with ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI). The MAPH score includes parameters such as Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), age, total protein, and haematocrit. Researchers have found that a high MAPH score is associated with a high thrombus burden in cases with STEMI and Non ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI). However, the association between MAPH score and ACS is undefined. Aim: To assess the role of MAPH score in predicting ACS. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Pathology, Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre Mangalore, Karnataka, India for six months. The study included 100 clinically diagnosed cases of ACS and 100 healthy controls. The demographic data, MPV, total protein, and haematocrit values of all cases and controls were collected and tabulated, and statistical analysis was performed. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed on each MAPH score parameter, and cutoff values for each parameter were obtained based on the Youden index. After calculating the MAPH score of cases and controls, multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the role of the MAPH score as an independent predictor of ACS. Results: A statistically significant increase in MPV (p-value =0.017) and total protein (p-value<0.001) was noted among the cases. The calculated cut-off values for MPV, age, total protein, and haematocrit were 8.4 fL, 54 years, 6.8 g/dL, and 49.1%, respectively. A statistically significant increase in the MAPH score was noted among the cases compared to the controls. Finally, multivariate logistic regression analysis identified the MAPH score as an independent predictor of ACS. Conclusion: This was the first study investigating the association between MAPH scores in patients with ACS. The MAPH score was identified as an independent predictor of ACS and can be used as a screening tool to predict and diagnose the condition in primary healthcare settings. Introduction: Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (LC) is done under general anaesthesia with the patient in a reverse Trendelenburg position and with pressurised carbon dioxide in the peritoneum. This can induce venous stasis in the lower extremities and may affect the balance in the coagulation and fibrinolysis system, thereby thrombo-embolic complications. Aim: To investigate the effects of carbon dioxide pneumoperitoneum on the coagulation system of patients undergoing LC. Materials and Methods: A prospective longitudinal study was carried out from January 2021 to June 2021 among patients aged 18 to 60 years who attended the Surgery Department at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal, Manipur, India and were diagnosed with gallstone disease and subsequently underwent LC. Independent variables like age, sex, religion, pre-operative prothrombin time, platelet count, activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT), and International Normalised Ratio (INR). Outcome variables comprised complications, postoperative prothrombin time, platelet count, aPTT, and INR. Data collected were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS) version 21.0. Paired t-tests were employed to test the association between mean values of post-operative and pre-operative PT, aPTT, INR, etc. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The study enrolled 71 patients who encountered LC with carbon dioxide pneumo-peritoneum, including 18 male and 54 female patients. Maximum number of patients (28, 38.9%) fell into the 41 to 50 years age group. There was no significant difference in the mean value of prothrombin time (p=0.150) and INR (p=0.437) measured between the pre-operative and postoperative periods. Introduction: Lung cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide. In addition to chemotherapy, immunotherapy has yielded favourable outcomes in advanced, surgically non resectable Non Small Cell Lung Carcinoma (NSCLC). The inhibition of immune checkpoints by monoclonal antibodies targeting Programmed Death 1 (PD-1) and Programmed Death Ligand 1 (PD-L1) plays a pivotal role in preventing the downregulation of antitumour immunity. Aim: To study the expression of PD-L1 in NSCLC cases from core biopsy specimens and its association with histological types, grades of tumour along with clinicoradiological parameters (age, sex, smoking status, and radiological location of the tumour). Materials and Methods: This ambispective study was done in the Pathology Department of Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, India, over two years from October 2020 to August 2022. The authors studied 35 cases of histopathologically and Immunohistochemically (IHC) diagnosed NSCLC. Partial or complete membranous staining of any intensity in ≥1% of tumour cells was considered positive in IHC. The Tumour Proportion Scoring (TPS) used for PD-L1 reporting was as follows: TPS <1%: negative, TPS 1-49%: low positive expression, and TPS ≥50%: high positive expression. Microsoft excel and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25.0 software were used for statistical analysis. Results: The most common age group was 61-70 years (12 cases; 34.29%), with a male predominance 24 (68.60). Chronic smokers (16 cases; 45.71%) were commonly affected. Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) was the common histological type (21 cases; 60%). Overall, 14 cases (40.0%) showed low (1-49%) and 5 cases (14.30%) showed high (≥50%) positive TPS of PD-L1 expression, respectively. Three cases (27.3%) of Grade 2 SCC and one case (10%) of Grade 3 SCC expressed high positivity. There was a statistical association between PDL1 expression and male sex (p-value 0.01), positive smoking history (p-value 0.048), and SCC (p-value 0.032). Conclusion: The PD-L1 expression is associated with increased tumour proliferation, aggressiveness, as well as shorter survival period in advanced NSCLC. The present study showed a significant association of PD-L1 expression in males, chronic smokers, and SCC. As per the existing literature, its association with clinicoradiological parameters is not clear. Ordinal class labels are frequently observed in classification studies across various fields. In medical science, patients' responses to a drug can be arranged in the natural order, reflecting their recovery postdrug administration. The severity of the disease is often recorded using an ordinal scale, such as cancer grades or tumor stages. We propose a method based on the linear discriminant analysis (LDA) that generates a sparse, low-dimensional discriminant subspace reflecting the class orders. Unlike existing approaches that focus on predictors marginally associated with ordinal labels, our proposed method selects variables that collectively contribute to the ordinal labels. We employ the optimal scoring approach for LDA as a regularization framework, applying an ordinality penalty to the optimal scores and a sparsity penalty to the coefficients for the predictors. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach using a glioma dataset, where we predict cancer grades based on gene expression. A simulation study with various settings validates the competitiveness of our classification performance and demonstrates the advantages of our approach in terms of the interpretability of the estimated classifier with respect to the ordinal class labels. This article provides an overview of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medical sciences (STEMM) talent development from first exposure to a STEMM domain to achieving eminence and innovation. To this end, a resource‐oriented model of STEMM talent development is proposed as a framework. It includes a three‐stage phase model based on Bloom (1985), with the main focus on interest development in the first stage, skill acquisition toward expertise and excellence in the second stage, and style formation toward eminence and innovation in the final stage. A literature review shows that from an educational perspective, each phase is mainly characterized by the focus that Bloom postulated. However, it is important that all three stages (i.e., interest development, skill acquisition, and style formation) occur in a stage‐typical manner. To explain how these primary objectives of STEMM development can be supported through STEMM talent education, Ziegler and Stoeger's (2011) educational and learning capital framework is used in the proposed resource‐based model. A literature review shows that consistent provisioning of the resources specified in the model is necessary for individuals to complete a learning pathway to STEMM eminence and innovation. The field of fluid dynamics has expanded to study of biological fluids in a magnetic field, a new area known as biomagnetic fluid dynamics. The most notable biomagnetic fluid is blood. The growing interest in problems related to biomagnetic fluid dynamics among researchers is due to its vast applications in biotechnology and biomedical sciences. These applications include magnetic devices for cell separation, blood reduction during surgeries, targeted drug delivery using magnetic nanoparticles to trigger drug release, magnetically induced hyperthermia therapy for most malignant tumors, and magnetic resonance imaging of specific regions of the human body. This study examines the effect of nonlinear radiation on a biomagnetic fluid, specifically blood, flowing through a two‐dimensional, incompressible boundary layer via a stretchable sheet. The flow under consideration is electrically conductive, adhering to the laws of magnetohydrodynamics and ferrohydrodynamics. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into ordinary differential equations using a similarity transformation and solved using the built‐in bvp4c function of MATLAB software. The effects of various physical parameters on velocity and thermal fields are investigated. The influences of the Nusselt number and skin friction are also evaluated against the main parameters. We demonstrate that all meta‐analyses of partial correlations are biased, and yet hundreds of meta‐analyses of partial correlation coefficients (PCCs) are conducted each year widely across economics, business, education, psychology, and medical research. To address these biases, we offer a new weighted average, UWLS+3. UWLS+3 is the unrestricted weighted least squares weighted average that makes an adjustment to the degrees of freedom that are used to calculate partial correlations and, by doing so, renders trivial any remaining meta‐analysis bias. Our simulations also reveal that these meta‐analysis biases are small‐sample biases (n < 200), and a simple correction factor of (n − 2)/(n − 1) greatly reduces these small‐sample biases along with Fisher's z. In many applications where primary studies typically have hundreds or more observations, partial correlations can be meta‐analyzed in standard ways with only negligible bias. A non‐laborious process for the fabrication of silver and magnesium dual doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (Ag/Mg−ZnO NP) is described. The wurtzite ZnO nano‐structures and the dual doped NP were analyzed by PXRD. SEM data showed the hexagonal morphology of our product, while the gathered anti‐bacterial outcomes towards Streptococcus mutans bacteria through micro‐dilution technic affirmed the enhanced performance of doped NP compared to the native ones. Furthermore, we gauged the toxic impacts of synthesized pure and Ag/Mg−ZnO NP against a breast cancer (MDA‐MB‐231) cell line through an MTT trial, which highlighted the superiority of the doped when compared to the native nanoparticles. Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a frequently overlooked causative agent of acute hepatitis. Evaluating the long-term durability of hepatitis E vaccine efficacy holds crucial importance. This study was an extension to a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase-3 clinical trial of the hepatitis E vaccine conducted in Dontai County, Jiangsu, China. Participants were recruited from 11 townships in Dongtai County. In the initial trial, a total of 112 604 healthy adults aged 16–65 years were enrolled, stratified according to age and sex, and randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive three doses of hepatitis E vaccine or placebo intramuscularly at month 0, month 1, and month 6. A sensitive hepatitis E surveillance system including 205 clinical sentinels, covering the entire study region, was established and maintained for 10 years after vaccination. The primary outcome was the per-protocol efficacy of hepatitis E virus vaccine to prevent confirmed hepatitis E occurring at least 30 days after administration of the third dose. Throughout the study, the participants, site investigators, and laboratory staff remained blinded to the treatment assignments. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT01014845). During the 10-year study period from Aug 22, 2007, to Oct 31, 2017, 90 people with hepatitis E were identified; 13 in the vaccine group (0·2 per 10 000 person-years) and 77 in the placebo group (1·4 per 10 000 person-years), corresponding to a vaccine efficacy of 83·1% (95% CI 69·4–91·4) in the modified intention-to-treat analysis and 86·6% (73·0 to 94·1) in the per-protocol analysis. In the subsets of participants assessed for immunogenicity persistence, of those who were seronegative at baseline and received three doses of hepatitis E vaccine, 254 (87·3%) of 291 vaccinees in Qindong at the 8·5-year mark and 1270 (73·0%) of 1740 vaccinees in Anfeng at the 7·5-year mark maintained detectable concentrations of antibodies. Immunisation with this hepatitis E vaccine offers durable protection against hepatitis E for up to 10 years, with vaccine-induced antibodies against HEV persisting for at least 8·5 years. Globally, more than 200 million women become pregnant each year, most of whom receive medications despite limited information on their safe use during pregnancy. The paucity of drug safety data on pregnant and breastfeeding women stems from the routine exclusion of this population from clinical trials due to scientific, ethical, regulatory and legal concerns. Consequently, at the time of initial drug approval, there may be scant safety data to inform the drug benefit‐risk balance to the mother, foetus or infant. Although momentum is growing to include this underrepresented population in clinical trials, most information on drug exposure outcomes comes from data collected in the postmarketing setting. Regulatory guidance and legislation on medication use in pregnancy and breastfeeding were reviewed globally by the TransCelerate IGR PV Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Team. The International Conference of Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) standards and Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences guidelines served as benchmarks for national safety regulations and guidance. The landscape assessment identified a lack of harmonization of global regulations on research in pregnant and breastfeeding women and a lack of specific regulations on this topic in the majority of the territories included in the assessment. This article focuses on the ambiguities and lack of harmonization in global regulations on postmarketing pregnancy and breastfeeding safety studies. There is currently no ICH standard to guide these types of safety studies and, in most regions reviewed, there are no clear regulations or guidance on when and how to conduct them. While a challenging undertaking, greater clarity and harmonization would facilitate more timely completion of postmarketing pregnancy safety studies that would ultimately generate the critical data needed to optimize benefit‐risk decisions for women who may conceive, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women. This paper assesses the interplay between international human rights law and international biomedical law as two specialised regimes within international law. The focus lies specifically on the anticipatory duties arising under the human right to benefit from science and its applications on the one side and under international biomedical law on the other. International biomedical law instruments adopt a human rights-based approach to the regulation of biology and medicine, so one of the questions is whether the anticipatory duties in biomedical law are indeed a specific application of the corresponding duties in international human rights law, modified, expanded and elaborated further to better address the distinctive subject matter, namely, the interface between the individual and science and technology in a medical context? Or whether the anticipatory duties in international biomedical law draw from international environmental law and/or general international law? The cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and the pathophysiological mechanisms involved, remain major unanswered questions in medical science. Oral bacteria, especially those species associated with chronic periodontitis and particularly Porphyromonas gingivalis, are being linked causally to AD pathophysiology in a subpopulation of susceptible individuals. P. gingivalis produces large amounts of proteolytic enzymes, haem and iron capture proteins, adhesins and internalins that are secreted and attached to the cell surface and concentrated onto outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). These enzymes and adhesive proteins have been shown to cause host tissue damage and stimulate inflammatory responses. The ecological and pathophysiological roles of P. gingivalis OMVs, their ability to disperse widely throughout the host and deliver functional proteins lead to the proposal that they may be the link between a P. gingivalis focal infection in the subgingivae during periodontitis and neurodegeneration in AD. P. gingivalis OMVs can cross the blood brain barrier and may accelerate AD-specific neuropathology by increasing neuroinflammation, plaque/tangle formation and dysregulation of iron homeostasis, thereby inducing ferroptosis leading to neuronal death and neurodegeneration. Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) results in significant postoperative liver dysfunction, and the intricate mechanism of IRI poses challenges in developing effective therapeutic drugs. Mitigating the damage caused by hepatic IRI and promoting the repair of postoperative liver injury have become focal points in recent years, holding crucial clinical significance. Adipose mesenchymal stem cell derived exosomes (ADSCs-Exo) and metformin (Met) can play a mitochondrial protective role in the treatment of hepatic IRI, but whether there is a synergistic mechanism for their intervention is not yet known. Combining the unique advantages of exosomes as drug carriers, the aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects and mechanisms of the constructed Met and ADSCs-Exo complex (Met-Exo) on the liver IRI combined with partial resection injury in rat and hypoxic reoxygenation injury of rat primary hepatocytes (HCs). In this study, firstly, we detected that mitochondrial morphology and function were severely affected in hepatic tissues after hepatic IRI combined with partial resection, and then verified by in vitro experiments that Met-Exo could promote mitochondrial biosynthesis and fusion-associated protein expression and inhibit mitochondrial fission-related protein expression by modulating the AMPK/SIRT1 signalling pathway. This indicates that ADSCs-Exo can not only play a targeting role as a drug carrier but also has a great potential to act as a vehicle to act synergistically with drugs in the treatment of tissue and organ damage, which provides a new therapeutic strategy and experimental basis for the treatment of liver injury in medical science and clinical veterinary. An efficient computational approach for imaging binary-type physical properties suitable for various models in biomedical applications is developed and validated. The proposed methodology includes gradient-based multiscale optimization with multilevel control space reduction based on principal component analysis, optimal switching between the fine and coarse scales, and their effective re-parameterization. The reduced dimensional controls are used interchangeably at both scales to accumulate the optimization progress and mitigate side effects. Computational efficiency and superior quality of obtained results are achieved through proper communication between solutions obtained at the fine and coarse scales. Reduced size of control spaces supplied with adjoint-based gradients facilitates the application of this algorithm to models of high complexity and also to a broad range of problems in biomedical sciences and outside. The performance of the complete computational framework is tested with 2D inverse problems of cancer detection by electrical impedance tomography (EIT) in applications to synthetic models and models based on real breast cancer images. Objective: The unprecedented events of 2020 required a pivot in scientific training to better prepare the biomedical research workforce to address global pandemics, structural racism, and social inequities that devastate human health individually and erode it collectively. Furthermore, this pivot had to be accomplished in the virtual environment given the nation-wide lockdown. Methods: These needs and context led to leveraging of the San Francisco Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (SF BUILD) theories of change to innovate a Virtual BUILD Research Collaboratory (VBRC). The purpose of VBRC was to train Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) students to apply their unique perspectives to biomedical research. These training activities were evaluated using a pre-post survey design that included both validated and new psychosocial scales. A new scale was piloted to measure culturally relevant pedagogy. Results: VBRC scholars increased science identity on two items: thinking of myself as a scientist (+1point, p = 0.006) and belonging to a community of scientists (+1point, p = 0.069). Overall, scholars perceived stress also decreased over VBRC (-2.35 points, p = 0.02). Post VBRC, scholars had high agency scores (μ = 11.02, Md = 12, range = 6–12, σ = 1.62) and cultural humility scores (μ = 22.11, Md = 23, range = 12–24, σ = 2.71). No notable race/ethnic differences were found in any measures. Conclusions: Taken together, our innovative approach to data science training for BIPOC in unprecedented times shows promise for better preparing the workforce critically needed to address the fundamental gaps in knowledge at the intersection of public health, structural racism, and biomedical sciences. At a time when there is a growing public interest in animal welfare, it is critical to have objective means to assess the way that an animal experiences a situation. Objectivity is critical to ensure appropriate animal welfare outcomes. Existing behavioural, physiological, and neurobiological indicators that are used to assess animal welfare can verify the absence of extremely negative outcomes. But welfare is more than an absence of negative outcomes and an appropriate indicator should reflect the full spectrum of experience of an animal, from negative to positive. In this review, we draw from the knowledge of human biomedical science to propose a list of candidate biological markers (biomarkers) that should reflect the experiential state of non-human animals. The proposed biomarkers can be classified on their main function as endocrine, oxidative stress, non-coding molecular, and thermobiological markers. We also discuss practical challenges that must be addressed before any of these biomarkers can become useful to assess the experience of an animal in real-life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The object of research is a frequency-reconfigurable L-Shape antenna. This paper presents an innovative study focusing on the design and analysis of a frequency-reconfigurable L-Shape antenna with a specific application in Hyperthermia Treatment. The antenna, operating in the frequency range of 2.5 to 8 GHz, utilizes a varactor to achieve agility and simplify design, thereby reducing component count. Constructed with a Roggers RT5880 (lossy) substrate, the L-Shape configuration ensures optimal performance. The incorporation of a single varactor, acting as a junction capacitance, not only enables straightforward tuning but also contributes to enhanced energy efficiency by reducing overall power consumption in the reconfigurable antenna system. The study employed CST Microwave Studio’s 3D Electromagnetic field simulation software for time domain solver-based simulations, with validation conducted using the frequency domain solver. Results from the simulations showcase the antenna’s performance at different frequency states. At the tuning state frequency of 2.7 GHz, the antenna exhibits an impressive gain of 1.905 dB and a directivity of 7.530 dB. Similarly, at the tuning state frequency of 6.89 GHz, the gain is measured at 6.806 dB with a directivity of 7.490 dB. The proposed L-Shape antenna design not only demonstrates significant potential for Hyperthermia Treatment, allowing targeted heating within the 2.5 to 8 GHz frequency range but also aligns with the multidisciplinary focus of medical science. Background: Epidural hematomas have been treated with urgent surgical evacuation to prevent catastrophic neurological sequelae and death. Brain Trauma Foundation recommends EDH volume greater than 30 cm3 and warrants surgical evacuation irrespective of GCS. However, due to increase in number of patients undergoing brain CTs following head injuries, more patients have been detected with EDH causing minimal symptoms. Aims and objectives: To study factors influencing patients being treated conservatively for head injury with supratentorial epidural hematomas. Material and methods: Our study is a retrospective analysis of supratentorial epidural hematoma treated conservatively from august 2018 to July 2020 at Sher-i-Kashmir institute of medical sciences, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Results: A total of 19 patients with EDH were treated conservatively and fulfilled the inclusion criteria.(GCS of 13–15 with no neurological deficit, mild signs of elevated ICP, EDH thickness < 1.5 cm on CT, EDH volume on CT < 30 ml, midline shift on CT less than or equal to 5 mm with no significant intradural pathology)Age ranged from 2 months to 70 years (average 27.15 yrs)males (89.47%) predominated females (10.53%). Motor vehicular accidents were the most common mode of injury (42.1%). EDH was localised 13 times on right side, 5 times on left side and bilateral in one, supratentorially. A midline shift of 5 mm was found in 3 of 19 patients; GCS was > 13 on admission. 8 patients were hospitalised for a week, whilst 2 patients stayed in the hospital for 20 and 25 days, respectively, due to problems not related to EDH. One patient in whom conservative treatment had to be changed to surgical evacuation after 6 days of observation because of worsening headache, impaired alertness repeated imaging showed slight increase in EDH. Conclusions: EDH can be managed conservatively in carefully selected patients of minor head injury with radiological surveillance and close neurological monitoring. Patients with GCS on admission more than 13, midline shift of less than 5 mm, location and volume of EDH less than 30 ml. Thus, leading to optimal utilisation of hospital resources. So, we conclude that even a dreaded entity like extradural haemorrhage can be managed conservatively in selected cases with strict clinical and radiological surveillance. In biomedical science, it is a reality that many published results do not withstand deeper investigation, and there is growing concern over a replicability crisis in science. Recently, Ellipse of Insignificance (EOI) analysis was introduced as a tool to allow researchers to gauge the robustness of reported results in dichotomous outcome design trials, giving precise deterministic values for the degree of miscoding between events and non-events tolerable simultaneously in both control and experimental arms (Grimes, 2022). While this is useful for situations where potential miscoding might transpire, it does not account for situations where apparently significant findings might result from accidental or deliberate data redaction in either the control or experimental arms of an experiment, or from missing data or systematic redaction. To address these scenarios, we introduce Region of Attainable Redaction (ROAR), a tool that extends EOI analysis to account for situations of potential data redaction. This produces a bounded cubic curve rather than an ellipse, and we outline how this can be used to identify potential redaction through an approach analogous to EOI. Applications are illustrated, and source code, including a web-based implementation that performs EOI and ROAR analysis in tandem for dichotomous outcome trials is provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
