Abstract

Archaeological research provides clear evidence that the widespread formation of Amazonian Dark Earths (ADEs) in tropical lowland South America was concentrated in the Late Holocene, an outcome of sharp demographic growth that peaked towards 1000 BP. In their recent paper, however, Silva et al. propose that the high fertility of ADE is not of anthropic origin but instead the result of alluvial deposition starting in the Middle Holocene (8200-4200 cal BP). In order to support this argument, they marshal data and observations from a single expanse of ADE, the archaeological site of Caldeirão, and disregard or misread other studies of ADEs in the Central Amazon region. Silva et al.'s claim, an epilogue to ‘geogenic’ models laid to rest over 40 years ago, also dismisses research showing how long-term anthropic soil enrichment occurs as a result of daily practices at contemporary indigenous settlements. Here we critically review Silva et al.’s analysis and affirm that, like most ADEs, Caldeirão has anthropic soil horizons formed by burning, deposition, and reworking of refuse associated with indigenous settlement activities between 2500 and 500 BP.

113. Flowering phenology and mimicry of the rattan Calamus castaneus (Arecaceae) in southern Thailand

Abstract

In the insect-pollinated dioecious rattan Calamus castaneus Griff., nectar and pollen rewards, together with visual and olfactory cues, attract insects to male flowers. Pistillate flowers are apparently rewardless. Here, we aimed to clarify the mechanisms assuring visitation and pollination of female flowers. We studied features of flowering phenology and floral biology that affect pollination success of plants of both sexes. The results show that C. castaneus features a striking system of mimicry, quite different from those studied previously in other dioecious plants. The population of C. castaneus was not significantly male biased and no intersexual difference in number of inflorescences per plant was detected. However, male plants began their blossoming earlier and flowered longer than female plants. There was thus an excess of male floral display. This excess should increase the frequency of insect-mediated transport of pollen from male to female plants. Furthermore, on female plants each pistillate flower is accompanied by a sterile staminate flower that appears to contribute to insect attraction. Quite similar in morphology and function to fertile staminate flowers, they produce similar visual and olfactory cues, but less rewards (nectar but no pollen). C. castaneus thus ensures pollination success by intersexual phenological differences and by floral mimicry. Chez le rotin (Calamus castaneus Griff.) une espece dioique pollinisee par les insectes, les compensations sous forme de nectar et de pollen ainsi que des signes visuels et olfactifs attirent les insectes vers les fleurs males. Les fleurs pistillees n'offrent apparemment aucune compensation. Les auteurs ont cherche a clarifier les mecanismes assurant la visite et la pollinisation des fleurs femelles. Ils ont etudie les caracteres de la phenologie et de la biologie florale affectant le succes de la pollinisation, chez les plantes des deux sexes. Les resultats montrent que le C. castaneus affiche un systeme de mimetisme frappant, assez different de ceux etudies auparavant chez d'autres plantes dioiques. La population du C. castaneus n'est pas significativement biaisee du cote male et on n'observe pas de differences intersexuelles dans le nombre d'inflorescences par plante. Cependant, les plants males commencent a fleurir plus tot et fleurissent plus longtemps que les fleurs femelles. Il y a donc un excedent de presentation des fleurs males. Cet exces devrait augmenter la frequence du transport du pollen des plantes males vers les plantes femelles via les insectes. De plus, chez les plantes femelles, chaque fleur pistillee s'accompagne d une fleur staminee sterile semblant contribuer a l attraction des insectes. Assez semblables morphologiquement et physiologiquement aux fleurs staminees, elles portent des signes visuels et olfactifs similaires, mais moins de compensations (nectar, mais pas de pollen). Le C. castaneus assure ainsi le succes de sa pollinisation par des differences sexuelles phenologiques et un mimetisme floral. Abstract

The Amazonian savannas of French Guiana are rare and of high ecological and cultural value but are also highly threatened. They are socioecological systems that have been coconstructed by humans and nature and today form mosaic landscapes along the country's coast. From pre-Columbian raised fields through colonial and Creole uses to contemporary uses, they have been largely shaped and modified by human activities. They are currently threatened by changes in fire regimes, agricultural practices, invasive species, and infrastructure development. Less than 3% are protected, despite their importance for several endangered animal and plant species. A shift is required in the way we think about their conservation to create a new strategy that would be completely different from existing French environmental protection tools and adapted to the complexity of these landscapes.

139. Khayarevisited: Genetic markers and morphological analysis reveal six species in the widespread taxon K. anthotheca

Abstract

Khaya(Meliaceae) is a widespread genus of trees distributed from the tropical forests of Africa to Madagascar and the Comoros. Khayaspecies are very close morphologically and some contain considerable phenotypic and ecological diversity, raising the question of their delimitation: this is the case of Khaya anthothecas.l. (sensu lato, including K. nyasica), which is often lumped with K. grandifoliolaand K. ivorensis. We tested species delimitation within K. anthothecaby combining population‐genetic and morphological data. First, a visual inspection of over a thousand specimens suggested the existence of five morphogroups. Second, after genotyping 498 samples at 71 nuclear SNPs, Bayesian clustering analyses (STRUCTURE) first identified five genetic clusters (K1–K5), while further analyses subdivided K5 into two clusters. The six genetic clusters obtained are distributed in parapatry or allopatry from West Africa to East Africa, except for cluster K4, which is in sympatry with K3 in Central Africa. The partitioning of genetic clusters is also largely congruent with the morphogroups identified. The morphological differentiation of these clusters was confirmed by statistical analyses of 27 leaf characters. The clear‐cut genetic differentiation between clusters, with few admixed genotypes even in contact zones, argues for the recognition of distinct species following the biological species concept. Our analyses highlight that the current taxonomic treatment of Khayaunderestimates by one‐half the total number of species. We identify two new species, circumscribe K. anthothecaand support the rehabilitation at the rank of species of three taxa considered to be synonyms of K. anthotheca(K. agboensis, K. euryphylla, K. nyasica). These results illustrate the strength of combining population‐genetic and morphological data to delineate an African rainforest tree species complex.

140. Semi-Domesticated Crops Have Unique Functional Roles in Agroecosystems: Perennial Beans (Phaseolus dumosusand P. coccineus) and Landscape Ethnoecology in the Colombian Andes

Abstract

Semi-domesticated plants are good resources for agroecology, because they can survive without human intervention and can be managed together with non-domesticated plants. To explore the ecological know-how underlying farmer management of semi-domesticates at the landscape level, we compared how Yanacona Indigenous People in the southwestern Colombian Andes manage two semi-domesticated species ofPhaseolus beans, both locally namedcacha (Phaseolus coccineus andP. dumosus), and a full domesticate (the common beanPhaseolus vulgaris). We investigated what functional traits ofPhaseolus beans farmers identify and how farmers link these traits with the ability of beans to develop in different cultural-ecological niches within the landscape. In 60 semi-structured interviews conducted with Yanacona farmers, we found that (i) farmers compare functional traits of the different bean species, including perenniality, phenology, resistance to pests and diseases, and ability to compete with surrounding vegetation; (ii) farmers recognize and use the variation generated by hybridization between the twocacha species; (iii) farmers take advantage of the traits ofcacha to grow them under a wide array of niches at the landscape scale, including low-intervention spaces, such as hedges and swidden plots in fallow, and have detailed knowledge ofcacha beans' interactions with trees; and (iv)cacha traits contribute to the resilience of agroecosystems through the management practices and social relationships with which they are associated. Emic and etic perspectives must be combined to gain full understanding of the roles of functional traits of cultivated plants.

Abstract

International audience; Agrobiodiversity supports agriculture globally and is used and stewarded worldwide by farming communities that possess traditional knowledge about their crops. This chapter takes an evolutionary ecological perspective on the ecology, use, and conservation of crops and proposes research objectives to advance the study of agrobiodiversity globally. In particular, research agendas are outlined (a) to determine the current state of agrobiodiversity globally and how it is changing through the collection of baseline data; (b) to improve understanding of functions of existing agrobiodiversity and how the historical, evolutionary, and ecological factors have led to that diversity; (c) to increase understanding of the interactions and factors that drive change between crops and their associated agrobiodiversity (i.e., the multitude of organisms that interact with the primary crops); (d) to clarify the role of in situ conservation of agrobiodiversity in farmers' fields and how better to link ex situ collections to in situ use of agrobiodiversity; and (e) to generate a theoretical framework for agrobiodiversity to help us better understand past and future dynamic change. Pursuing such lines of research will enhance humanity's ability to face uncertainty, such as that expected with climate change.

Abstract

National audience; Species of the genus Khaya produce some of Africa’s most valuable timber. For two centuries, these species have all been traded as “African mahogany”. On the African continent, four different but morphologically similar species are now recognised: Khaya anthotheca, K. grandifoliola, K. ivorensis and K. senegalensis. The number of taxa included in the genus Khaya has varied over time, and the way these taxa are distinguished has implications for the development of sustainable management strategies for the different species. The aim of the study described in this article was to make sure that these species are distinguished on the basis of up-to-date knowledge on taxonomy, genetics, ecology and chemotaxonomy. Although the data available do not always suffice to clearly distinguish between the four mahogany species on the African continent, they do indicate that K. ivorensis, K. grandifoliola and K. senegalensis are probably distinct species whose taxonomic limits are yet to be clearly defined. It also seems that Khaya nyasica should be distinguished from K. anthotheca. Several chemotypes have been identified in the latter, suggesting that it could in fact cover a more complex group including at least two other taxa whose rank as species or sub-species is yet to be determined. Morphometric, genetic and ecological studies need to be developed to clarify the systemic status and evolutionary history of these different taxa, in order to formulate appropriate recommendations for the sustainable management of African mahoganies.; Les espèces du genre Khaya procurent l’un des bois les plus prisés du continent africain.
