We construct a supersymmetric extension of the Lorentz and Yang-Mills Chern-Simons terms in ten dimensions. In terms of dimensionful parameters α(Lorentz) and β (Yang-Mills), we obtain the complete O( α ) supersymmetrization. Furthermore, we present the leading O( α 2 ) and O( αβ ) corrections required by supersymmetry, and conjecture that the result is complete to this order. Finally, we briefly discuss the O( α 3 ) and O( αβ 2 ) modifications. A crucial ingredient in these constructions is the existence of an intimate relationship between the ten-dimensional supergravity and Yang-Mills multiplets.

Gauged N = 4 supergravity with an arbitrary number of matter multiplets is constructed from a superconformal starting point. It includes both the SO(4) and SU(4) symmetric N = 4 supergravity theories, and all their gaugings. Noncompact Yang-Mills symmetries may mix the matter and supergravity vector fields. We establish that in matter coupled N = 4 supergravity theories the super-Higgs effect can occur with a vanishing cosmological constant. An example is given with gauged SO(3) × SO(2, 1) symmetry in which the scalar potential vanishes completely, and all four supersymmetries are broken.

In this study, we have evaluated the effect of the caloric content of a physiological test meal on the gastric emptying kinetics of solids and liquids. 22 healthy male volunteers were studied in two groups matched for age. After an overnight fast, each volunteer underwent the same test procedure; in the first group (G I), 10 volunteers received a meal consisting of bread,111In-DTPA water and 1 scrambled egg labeled with 99mTc-labelled sulphur colloid; in the second group (G II) 12 volunteers were given the same meal but with 2 labeled eggs in order to increase the caloric content of the solid phase meal. Simultaneous anterior and posterior images were recorded using a dualheaded gamma camera. Solid and liquid geometric mean data were analyzed to determine the lag phase, the emptying rate and the half-emptying time for both solids and liquids. Solid and liquid gastric half-emptying times were significantly prolonged in G II compared to G I volunteers. For the solid phased, the delay was accounted for by a longer lag phase and a decrease in the equilibrium emptying rate. The emptying rate of the liquid phase was significantly decreased in G II compared to G I. Within each group, no statistically significant difference was observed between solid and liquid emptying rates. We conclude that the caloric content of the solid portion of a meal not only alters the emptying of the solid phase but also affects the emptying of the liquid component of the meal.

We discuss the problem of embeddings in non-Abelian gauge theories. The (ir)redueibility of a gauge field configuration is characterized. For the specific case of instanton solutions we derive a practical criterion for SUn. In the general construction of self-dual solutions the reducibility of the gauge field implies certain symmetry conditions on the parameter space. We determine these conditions for Spn, On and SUp×SUq embeddings.

The implicit-function method of constructing phase-factor continuum ambiguities in phase-shift analysis is briefly reviewed, and new numerical examples are given of ambiguities in πN phase shifts at 1997 MeV. Since the ambiguous amplitudes differ by more than 5%, while the corresponding cross sections and polarizations are equal, to better than a computational accuracy of 0.007%, numerical credence is given to the theoretical claim that the continuum ambiguity exists.

In 6 healthy subjects and 13 patients with chronic obstructive lung disease, 133Xe washout curves after bolus inhalation, perfusion and equilibration were compared, using a gamma camera and computerized data handling. In healthy subjects the washout after equilibration was significantly slower than after the two other procedures. As this phenomenon occurred at the basal zones, it was attributed to the presence of airway closure in some units. In patients, the three washouts were significantly different from each other. This indicated the existence of intraregional inhomogeneity in ventilation, perfusion and ventilation-perfusion ratio. Our conclusion is that comparison of these different washout methods yields valuable information not only on absolute values of pulmonary function but also on the intraregional distribution, which cannot be obtained by other examinations.

In 9 patients complaining primarily of exertional dyspnea, the diagnosis of early emphysema was made on the basis of a decrease of the elastic recoil of the lung and of the single breath diffusing capacity, in the presence of only minor airway obstruction as estimated from the routine pulmonary function tests. Closing volume, the alveolar plateau, dynamic compliance and maximal flow at 50% of the vital capacity were markedly abnormal; the maximal flow-static recoil pressure relationships suggest, however, that none of the patients suffered from small airway disease. We conclude that one should systematically consider early emphysema in the differential diagnosis of small airway disease.

Fecal blood loss was evaluated in normal subjects with 51Cr-labeled red cells. In a double-blind parallel study in 10 subjects, 250 mg diflunisal twice daily did not significantly increase blood loss in two consecutive treatment periods, while 750 mg acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) 4 times daily did so. In a double-blind crossover study in 2 subjects, diflunisal, 250 mg twice daily again did not significantly affect fecal blood loss during a 4-day treatment period, and there also was no significant effth diflunisal during two additional treatment days. ASA, 600 mg 4 times daily, induced an increase in blood loss and this effect was significantly enhanced by the addition of alcohol. The difference between treatments in the way they interact with alcohol was also statistically significant.

Varicocele is the most frequent cause of male subfertility. Several invasive and noninvasive techniques can be used to visualize scrotal phlebectasies. In this study sequential scintigraphy after intravenous injection of 99mTc-albumin was compared with tele-thermography. The normal and pathological images are described. The more obvious the clinical condition, the more lesions were revealed by scintigraphy (29.6% in subfertile men suspected of having variococele; 76.9% in patients with first degree varicocele; and 100% in Grades II and III cases). In 55 cases (of a total of 76 cases explored by radioisotopic techniques), the comparison of the thermographic results with the scintigraphy results suggests that scrotal scintigraphy is less sensitive. However, there are more false positive thermographies expressed as a discordance with clinical examination, which indicates higher specificity of scintigraphy. In conclusion scrotal scintigraphy cannot be considered as the screening procedure of first choice for varicocele, but it can give complementary information, especially when thermographic results are at variance with the clinical examination.

Regional distributions of inspired 133Xe and single-breath washout curves were compared in six young healthy subjects for the upright and the head-down positions. The regional distributions of volumes (at 0, 25, 50, and 75% vital capacity, VC) and of 133Xe boluses inhaled at residual volume (RV) were inverted in the head-down position, thus behaving as if they were determined by gravity acting via the weight of the lung rather than by thoracicoabdominal shape adaptations. Nevertheless no mirror image was obtained. The vertical differences in regional distribution of the 133Xe RV bolus and of the volumes at 25% VC were increased in the head-down position, whereas the vertical difference in volumes at RV was decreased, indicating enhanced air trapping and sequential ventilation at low volumes. This was attributed to the effect of the increased pulmonary blood volume in the head-down posture. Accordingly the size of phase IV on the washout curves with the SF6-bolus as well as with the N2-resident gas method was increased in the head-down position.

The action of antithrombotic drugs can be evaluated by measuring the deposition of111In-labelled platelets on peripheral bypass grafts several days after injection. This evaluation can be performed qualitatively (visual interpretation on the daily images) or quantitatively. Four different methods which calculate the ratio of platelet uptake with a reference region are compared: two methods use a gamma camera and two a detector. A blood sample or the region under the sternal angle are used as reference. The daily ratio of the counts, recorded by a gamma camera in a region of interest covering the graft, and the blood radioactivity interpolated from a platelet survival curve appears to be the most reliable method. The information of all the ratios can be combined in a single thrombogenicity index which reflects the daily rise of a linear or exponential regression versus time.

The transformation laws of chiral (scalar) superfields with arbitrary Weyl weight w are determined for the U(2) superconformal theory. A superconformally invariant density is given for fields with w = 2. For w = 1 it is possible to have smaller irreducible multiplets. The full restriction upon which the chiral superfield becomes reducible is exhibited. These results define a complete calculus for the construction of invariant actions with chiral superfields. As an example we find the action for the vector gauge multiplet.

Liver scintigraphy demonstrated areas of increased radiocolloid uptake in three cases with obstruction of the superior vena cava and extensive collateral circulation through the veins of the thoracic wall. The pattern of the hyperactive zones is indicative of predominant vascularization of the liver via the umbilical vein, with high colloid particle deposition in the quadrate lobe and adjacent part of the right lobe. These liver regions vascularized by the first intrahepatic branches of the umbilical vein as demonstrated by postmortem angiography, probably extract a great portion of the tracer dose, resulting in localized hyperactivity. An identical liver scan image was, however, found in a fourth case without evident superior vena cava syndrome. In this patient, presenting with a bronchus carcinoma with paratracheal metastatic lymph nodes, there is no explanation metastatic lymph nodes, there is no explanation (collateral circulation without vena cava obstruction?) for the abnormal tracer distribution within the liver.

We obtain a geometrical description of the parameter space of instantons of topological charge k in an SU( n ) gauge theory. We show how this space is related to a compact convex set of positive matrices. We give a characterization of points in the parameter space which correspond to embeddings. We derive an explicit formula for instantons of charge k in SU(4) which depend on 7 k −3 parameters and are not reducible.

Almost 90% of all nuclear medicine procedures are based on a 99”Tc-labelled compound as tracer agent [l]. Due to the short physical half-life of 99mT~ (6.02 h) these radiopharmaceuticals have to be prepared and analysed in the hospital just before use. Most of the older WmTc-radiopharmaceuticals are highly polar compounds for which simple TLC methods are most appropriate for efficient and rapid quality control [2]. However, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has become an indispensable technique for the development of newer, more lipophilic WmTc-compounds and their routine analysis after introduction for clinical use [3]. HPLC of radioactive compounds requires particular precautions and the use of special equipment for the handling of ionizing radiation. Radioactive parts of the system should be adequately shielded to protect the operator against the potentially harmful effect of the radiation. Frequent changing of columns or loops must be avoided as it involves a serious risk of radioactive contamination. However, the analysis of different compounds requires the use of different columns. Finally, the use of radiometric detection method and an appropriate integrating technique is required, especially for WmTc-agents which possess a high specific activity and are usually analysed in picogram quantities.

We have studied the influence of granulocyte labelling with commercially available 111In-oxine, tropolone (trop) or home made 111In-Mercapto pyridine (Merc) prepared by the method of Thakur (1985) on the cell structure by electron microscopy and on the cell function by enzymatic tests, random migration, chemotaxis, phagocytosis and bactericidal activity. The granulocytes were labelled with 400 microCi 111In-oxine in saline or 111In-trop or Merc in plasma. The effect of the chelating agents with and without addition of the tracer was studied (n = 4) with varying concentrations: 5-10 micrograms/ml oxine, 10-160 micrograms/ml trop and 1-4 micrograms/ml Merc. Chemotaxis and random migration were not affected by 111In-trop and clearly suppressed by 111In-oxine and Merc; the other tests were normal. The cell structure was disturbed by Merc. The labelling efficiency was excellent with oxine (90%), acceptable with trop (30%-80%) and poor with Merc (10%-25%). Without 111In, chemotaxis and random migration were normal up to a concentration of 80 micrograms/ml trop, 8.5 micrograms/ml oxine and 1 microgram/ml Merc. With addition of 111In, chemotaxis and random migration were unaffected up to 80 micrograms/ml by trop and markedly suppressed by Merc and oxine. It is concluded that labelling with 111In-trop assures intact cells.

We determined the configuration of lungs and chest in six healthy young subjects using anteroposterior and lateral technetium-99m-labeled scintigraphic images obtained in upright and in 90 degree head-down posture at 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% vital capacity (VC). The lung shape was evaluated from curves relating vertical height vs. cumulative volume of 20 apicodiaphragmatic lung zones of equal height. S-shaped curves were obtained, which, after size normalization, were largely independent of volume or posture (P greater than 0.1). However, the apical zones tended to become relatively wider and the diaphragmatic zones relatively smaller with increasing volume, especially between 0 and 25% VC in upright posture and 0–50% VC in head-down posture. Changing posture from upright to head-down also tended to slightly widen the apical zones and to narrow the diaphragmatic zones, which is in line with a greater intrathoracic penetration of the diaphragm/abdomen. The shape of the chest was evaluated from the ratio of the transverse-thoracic and anteroposterior distances over height. These ratios did not clearly change with posture (P greater than or equal to 0.05) but increased by approximately 30% with decreasing volume (P less than 0.01). The fact that these shape changes of the chest were not accompanied by similar changes in lung shape can be explained mainly by widening of the mediastinum when volume decreases. In conclusion, the shape of the lung and chest are similar in head-down and upright humans, in contrast to the reversal of the apicodiaphragmatic differences in alveolar expansion and in transpulmonary pressure.

A 99mTc count profile of the sacro-iliac region was performed in 14 control subjects and in 50 patients with inflammatory pain of the sacro-iliac joints. In addition, 85mSr count profiles were recorded in 14 control subjects. The sacro-iliac/sacral uptake ratio was calculated. There was no significant difference between Sr and Tc count profiles. The uptake in patients with sacro-iliitis was not above the range for controls. The mean uptake ratio was significantly below that for controls, and was lower in cases with radiologically advanced changes than in those with few or no signs. This method was not useful for early diagnosis of sacro-iliitis.

Serum osteocalcin was measured by radio-immunoassay in 56 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and in 50 controls. Mean serum osteocalcin levels were significantly higher in patients with RA. There was a positive correlation between osteocalcin and fasting mucopolysaccharide/creatinine ratio in both sexes, and between osteocalcin and fasting hydroxyproline/creatinine ratio in women. Serum alkaline phosphatase activity, a less specific marker for bone formation, was also increased in RA, and there was a positive correlation with osteocalcin in both sexes. These data suggest that overall bone turnover is increased in RA and that serum osteocalcin may provide additional information for the evaluation of bone metabolism in this disease.

BackgroundChikungunya virus (CHIKV) outbreaks, driven by the expanding habitat of the Aedes albopictus mosquito and global climate change, pose a significant threat to public health. Our study evaluates the effectiveness of emergency vaccination using a dynamic disease transmission model for a potential large-scale outbreak in Rome, Italy.MethodsThe model incorporates a susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered (SEIR) framework for human and mosquito populations, taking into account temperature-dependent mosquito lifecycle dynamics, human-mosquito interactions, and various vaccination scenarios.FindingsResults indicate that emergency vaccination could significantly mitigate the impact of a CHIKV outbreak. Without vaccination, an outbreak is estimated to infect up to 6.21% of Rome's population, equating to approximately 170,762 individuals. Implementing rapid vaccination after detecting the virus in ten individuals and achieving 40% coverage could reduce infection rates by 82%, preventing 139,805 cases. Scenario and sensitivity analyses confirm that even with lower vaccination coverage rates, significant benefits are observed: at 10% coverage, the number of infections drops to 115,231, and at 20% coverage, it further reduces to 76,031. These scenarios indicate prevention of approximately 33% and 55% of infections, respectively.ConclusionsThe findings highlight the critical role of timely vaccination interventions in outbreak settings, demonstrating that even modest coverage levels can markedly decrease the spread of CHIKV. This study underscores the importance of preparedness, early detection and adaptive response capabilities to manage emerging infectious diseases in urban centres, advocating for strategic vaccine stockpiling and rapid deployment mechanisms to enhance public health outcomes.

We present the supersymmetric quartic effective action for the heterotic string which follows from the supersymmetrization of the Yang-Mills and Lorentz Chern-Simons forms. This includes all bosonic terms in the action, and all bosonic contributions to the supersymmetry transformation rules, thereby giving all terms to this order which are relevant for the study of compactification scenarios with unbroken supersymmetry.

The uptake of 99mTc in the small joints of the hand has been compared to various other mesures of inflammation in 22 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The 99mTc uptake in the finger joints can reflect both disease activity at a given time and change in activity over a period of time. The place of Tc uptake amongst other measures of inflammation, from the point of view of the ‘relative efficiency’ of the assessment method, is rather inferior. In evaluating the effect of antiphlogistic drugs on local inflammation, techneticum uptake may, however, prove more discriminating than grip-strength or the number of painful joints, since the latter measures depend largely on the degree of destruction.

In patients with chronic obstructive lung disease, we determined single-breath N2 and 133 Xe washout curves, and regional distributions of volumes (Vr) and of 133Xe boluses inhaled at residual volume (VIRV). Patients suffering from emphysema with minimal airway obstruction demonstrated large closing volumes and apicobasal distribution gradients, apparently because of a steep pulmonary recoil pressure-volume curve. In one subject with basal small airway disease there was no vertical gradient in regional residual volume; closing volume was increased with the 133Xe technique but almost absent with the N2 technique. Patients with moderate-to-severe airway obstruction had upward-sloping alveolar plateaus without distinct phase IV, and small apicobasal differences in Vr and VIRV. The latter resulted probably from increased regional differences in time constants counteracting the influence of gravity. Finally, patients with severe airway obstruction and basal emphysema demonstrated a rising N2 but a descending 133Xe plateau; the gradient for VIRV was normal, and reversed for Vr. This pattern was attributed to nongravitational differences in time constants causing a first in-first out distribution.

Two cases of mediastinal localization of parathyroid adenoma are presented, in which technetium-thallium subtraction scintigraphy yielded a positive result. Both patients had already undergone a negative surgical neck exploration. We suggest that, in case of negative subtraction scintigraphy and negative surgical exploration in proven primary hyperparathyroidism, subtraction scintigraphy should be repeated with emphasis on the superior mediastinum, and in all cases, the use of a non-zoom, large field of few procedure is recommended for technetium-thallium subtraction scintigraphy.

The authors construct an extension of the gauge technique to two-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories. This involves a derivation of the spectral representation of a scalar superpropagator in two dimensions. They apply the method to the massive supersymmetric Schwinger model. In the case that the gauge multiplet mass equals twice that of the matter multiplet they determine the spectral functions of the matter propagator.

Using thallium myocardial scintigraphy and radionuclide ventriculography, we assessed size of infarction and left ventricular function at late follow-up (greater than 2 months) in 13 patients who underwent emergency coronary artery bypass surgery (ECABS) during evolving myocardial infarction and in 26 controls who received conventional treatment for acute infarction. Thallium scans were quantitatively analyzed. The thallium defect, expressed as a numerical value in arbitrary units, was smaller after early revascularization (within 4 hr of the onset of symptoms, n = 10) than in the controls: 397 +/- 232 vs 2779 +/- 972 for anterior infarction (p less than .001) and 475 +/- 511 vs 1454 +/- 960 for inferior infarction (p less than .05). The patients undergoing revascularization late (4 to 5 hr after the onset of symptoms, n = 3) had thallium defects comparable to those in the controls. Regional ejection fraction of the involved left ventricular segment was higher after early revascularization (41 +/- 9% vs 21 +/- 8% for anterior infarction, p less than .005; 67 +/- 14% vs 51 +/- 11% for inferior infarction, p less than .01). Global ejection fraction was higher after early revascularization in patients with anterior infarction (57 +/- 10% vs 37 +/- 9%, p less than 0.02), but not in those with inferior infarction (60 +/- 11% vs 54 +/- 8%, p greater than .05). After late revascularization, regional and global ejection fraction were comparable to those in controls. In selected patients, early reperfusion of acutely ischemic myocardium by ECABS can limit size of infarction and preserve left ventricular function, but time constraints may be severe.

The N=4 Yang-Mills multiplet is coupled to N=4 conformal supergravity. The action has a local U(4)×G symmetry, where G is the Yang-Mills gauge group. The action and supersymmetry transformation rules are presented in the Poincare gauge, and properties of the scalar potential are discussed.

We show that an elastic scattering amplitute may be defined as an implicit function of the differential cross section. A practical method is given for a numerical investigation of this dependence, both in the elastic and in the inelastic regions. In particular, we consider the case of a polynomial amplitude, and we show that the Crichton ambiguity is not isolated.

An arbitrary number of abelian vector multiplets is coupled to N = 4 supergravity. The resulting action is invariant under global SO( n ,6), where n is the number of vector multiplets, and under local SU(4)×U(1) transformations. The scalar fields of the theory parametrize the manifold [SO( n ,6)/SO( n )×SO(6)]×[SU(1,1)/U(1)]. The role of the matter fields of the N = 4 Weyl multiplet in the Poincare supergravity theory is clarified.

Autoradiographic study of the distribution of different tracer substances in experimental infectious lesions ( 9m Tc pertechnetate, 125 I RIHSA, 203 Hg chlormerodrin, 111 indium DTPA, 75 Se selenite, 67 Ga citrate and 57 Co bleomycin) shows, beside tracer concentration within the central necrotic zone and immediate vicinity, no clear cellular labeling except in 67 Ga citrate and 57 Co bleomycin where selective labeling of the macrophages could be demonstrated. The parallelism between high concentration values and the above-mentioned cellular labeling, suggests that for 67 Ga citrate and 57 Co bleomycin, the macrophages have a preponderant role in the tracer concentration. For the other substances the mechanism of tracer accumulation remains to be confirmed.

We discuss continuation in energy as a method to resolve ambiguities in phase-shift analysis. We show that continuity in energy is not in all cases sufficient to resolve ambiguities, and we give examples of such cases for both spin 0-spin 0 and spin 0-spin 1 2 scattering.
