Abstract

We review the utility of centrifugal microfluidic technologies applied to point-of-care diagnosis in extremely under-resourced environments. The various challenges faced in these settings are showcased, using areas in India and Africa as examples. Measures for the ability of integrated devices to effectively address point-of-care challenges are highlighted, and centrifugal, often termed CD-based microfluidic technologies, technologies are presented as a promising platform to address these challenges. We describe the advantages of centrifugal liquid handling, as well as the ability of a standard CD player to perform a number of common laboratory tests, fulfilling the role of an integrated lab-on-a-CD. Innovative centrifugal approaches for point-of-care in extremely resource-poor settings are highlighted, including sensing and detection strategies, smart power sources and biomimetic inspiration for environmental control. The evolution of centrifugal microfluidics, along with examples of commercial and advanced prototype centrifugal microfluidic systems, is presented, illustrating the success of deployment at the point-of-care. A close fit of emerging centrifugal systems to address a critical panel of tests for under-resourced clinic settings, formulated by medical experts, is demonstrated. This emphasizes the potential of centrifugal microfluidic technologies to be applied effectively to extremely challenging point-of-care scenarios and in playing a role in improving primary care in resource-limited settings across the developing world.

Abstract

We discuss progress in understanding the light and heavy quark excited hadron spectrum from Coulomb gauge QCD. For light quark systems we highlight the insensitivity to spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, which predicts Wigner parity-degeneracy in the highly excited hadron spectrum and allows the quark mass momentum dependence to be experimentally probed. For heavy quark meson decays we invoke the Franck-Condon principle, a consequence of small velocity changes for heavy quarks, to extract qualitative, but model independent, structure insight from the momentum distribution of the decay products., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, delivered at NAPP2010 (3d International Conference on Nuclear and Particle Physics with CEBAF at Jefferson Lab), Dubrovnik, Croatia, October 2010

149. Reanudación de la actividad ovárica posparto en ovinos en el trópico alto colombiano.

Abstract

The behavior of body condition, live weight and progesterone levels in the postpartum period during the resumption of ovarian activity was evaluated, based on racial type (Colombian Creole, Romney Marsh, Hampshire and Corriedale) and type of delivery (single and multiple) in 32 ovine females. The statistics were performed under a factorial structure model, using the SAS package. Among the results, it was found that body condition and weight begin to recover from day 21, with Creole and Romney Marsh starting earlier; the postpartum ovarian reactivation time was 31.8 ± 14.1 days on average, without showing significant differences within the evaluated groups. The type of delivery had a significant effect on the interval between first ovulation delivery (P <0.002), the interval between the first observed estrus (P <0.015), the interval between the first regular cycle (P <0.006) and the interval between onset of cyclicity (P <0.031), with females with a simple delivery having an earlier ovarian resumption. In the racial type * calving type interaction, no significant differences were found for the measured variables (P> 0.05). This study allowed to validate the effect of the type of parturition on the ovarian reactivation after childbirth, with the single parturition females recovering more quickly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
