101. Structure effects on reaction mechanisms in collisions induced by radioactive ion beams

Abstract

International audience; The present paper concerns the study of reactions induced by radioactive beams of halo and weakly bound nuclei at energies around and above the Coulomb barrier. The results obtained for the reaction induced by the halo nucleus 6He on 64Zn have been compared with the results for the reaction induced by 4He on the same target. The results of the reaction induced by the weakly bound unstable 13N on the weakly bound 9Be have been compared with those for the reaction 10B + 12C.

Abstract

The 6He + 6Li and 6He + 7Li reactions have been studied using a 18 MeV 6He radioactive beam and a highly efficient and segmented detector set-up. Triple coincidence events corresponding to the 6He + 6Li → 6He + α + d , 6He + 6Li → 2 α + t + n and 6He + 7Li → 6He + α + t reactions have been clearly observed. The dominant mechanism of these reactions has been found to be a sequential decay through the known cluster states in 6Li, 7Li, 8Be, 9Be and 10Be. In particular, the sequential α-decay of the 10Be state at E x = 7.54 MeV has been observed although its decay energy is much smaller (130 keV) than the decay energy for neutron emission (730 keV). Furthermore, the 10Be state at E x ≈ 10.2 MeV has been found to be strongly populated in the reactions with both used targets. Angular correlations analysis of the events corresponding to the 10.2 MeV state α-decay suggests the 4 + assignment. Both of these observations indicate a special, well-developed 6He+α cluster structure of the 10Be states involved. The structure of several low-lying 9Be states is also discussed.

Abstract

The first results are reported on $(^{6}\mathrm{He},^{8}\mathrm{Be})$ two-proton pick-up reactions on $^{12}\mathrm{C}$, $^{16}\mathrm{O}$, and $^{19}\mathrm{F}$ nuclei. The measurements were done with an $18\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$ beam on $^{6}\mathrm{LiF}$, $^{7}\mathrm{LiF}$, $^{6}\mathrm{Li}_{2}\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$, and $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ targets. The measured angular distributions for the $^{12}\mathrm{C}(^{6}\mathrm{He},^{8}\mathrm{Be})^{10}\mathrm{Be}$ (g.s.) and $^{12}\mathrm{C}(^{6}\mathrm{He},^{8}\mathrm{Be})^{10}\mathrm{Be}^{*}(3.37\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV})$ reactions show a clear signature of a direct process. Although the contributions from the $^{6}\mathrm{Li}(^{6}\mathrm{He},^{8}\mathrm{Be})^{4}\mathrm{H}$ reaction were observed, no clear extraction of the $^{4}\mathrm{H}$ data was possible.

Abstract

The $^{11}\mathrm{B}(p,{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{0})^{8}\mathrm{Be}$ reaction was studied from $1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{MeV}$ down to astrophysical energies by means of the Trojan-horse method applied to the $^{2}\mathrm{H}(^{11}\mathrm{B},{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{o}^{8}\mathrm{Be})n$ three-body reaction performed at an incident energy of $27\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{MeV}$. Coincidence spectra measured in a kinematically complete experiment show the presence of the quasifree $^{11}\mathrm{B}\penalty1000-\hskip0ptp$ process. The astrophysical factor $S(E)$ for the $^{11}\mathrm{B}(p,{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{0})^{8}\mathrm{Be}$ reaction was extracted from the three-body cross section at low neutron momentum. The result was compared with the behavior of the astrophysical factor from the directly measured two-body reaction.

Abstract

The reaction $^{6}\mathrm{He}+^{64}\mathrm{Zn}$ was studied in order to investigate the effects of the projectile neutron-halo structure on the reaction mechanism at energies around the Coulomb barrier. Elastic scattering angular distributions, transfer∕breakup angular distributions, and fusion excitation functions have been measured. Due to the low-recoil energy of the evaporation residues and the low intensity of the $^{6}\mathrm{He}$ beam, the fusion cross section was measured by detecting off-line the atomic x-ray emission which follows the electron capture decay of the evaporation residues. For comparison the reaction $^{4}\mathrm{He}+^{64}\mathrm{Zn}$ was studied using the same technique. The data for the reaction $^{6}\mathrm{He}+^{64}\mathrm{Zn}$ show that the transfer and breakup mechanisms account for almost $80%$ of the total reaction cross section, moreover we do not observe an enhancement of the fusion cross section when compared with the $^{4}\mathrm{He}+^{64}\mathrm{Zn}$ reaction.

The ${}^{6}\mathrm{Li}(p,\ensuremath{\alpha}{)}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ reaction has been studied from ${E}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}=2.4\mathrm{MeV}$ down to astrophysical energies by means of the indirect Trojan horse method applied to the ${}^{2}\mathrm{H}{(}^{6}\mathrm{Li},\ensuremath{\alpha}$ ${}^{3}\mathrm{He})$ n three-body reaction performed at an incident energy of 25 MeV. Coincidence spectra measured in a kinematically complete experiment show the presence of the quasifree ${}^{6}\mathrm{Li}\ensuremath{-}p$ process. The excitation function for this process was extracted from the three-body reaction cross section at low neutron momentum and compared with the behavior of the free two-body reaction cross section.

Abstract

Knowledge of the primordial nucleosynthesis offers a powerful tool to retrieve information on the baryon density of the Universe. In this context lithium isotopes play a crucial role and in particular we stress how important the bare nucleus cross-section for the 7 Li(p, $\alpha)^4$He reaction is. Recent application of the Trojan Horse Method led to an indirect measurement of that cross-section. In the present paper its astrophysical implications are examined in the case of the Solar lithium problem and of the primordial nucleosynthesis.

Abstract

The 15O(α,γ)19Ne reaction is generally considered as a potential breakout reaction from the hot CNO cycle. Under nova conditions, the reaction rate is dominated by a single sub-Coulomb resonance at Ec.m.=504 keV which corresponds to a 19Ne excitation energy of ER=4.033 MeV. Results from a d(18Ne,19Ne)p experiment show that states of astrophysical interest are populated in this reaction. An upper limit for the α-branching ratio of the 4.033 MeV state was identified and branching ratios for other states in 19Ne were found to be in good agreement with stable beam based results.

Abstract

Excitation functions have been measured for the fusion of the weakly bound nuclei 6Li and 7Li respectively with 120Sn and 119Sn at energies around the Coulomb barrier by using an activation technique. With such a study we aim to investigate the role played by direct processes as neutron transfer and breakup on fusion. At energies above the barrier, the complete fusion cross section are lower than those predicted by fusion models. This suppression is independent of beam energy and is in agreement with the values reported in literature for heavier systems. At energies below the barrier, no significant enhancement due to the positive Q-value for one and two neutron transfer for the 7Li+119Sn system is observed as compared with the 6Li+120Sn.

Abstract

Fusion excitation functions have been measured for the 6 Li+120 Sn and 7 Li+119 Sn systems at energies around the Coulomb barrier, to investigate the effects of neutron transfer and breakup on the fusion process. At energies above the barrier, a suppression of the complete fusion excitation function with respect to the prediction of the 1D - Barrier Penetration Model has been observed, in both cases. At energies below the Coulomb barrier, no significant difference between the two excitation function, imputable to the different neutron transfer Q-values of the two systems has been observed.

Abstract

We have studied the ${}^{2}\mathrm{H}{(}^{6}\mathrm{Li},\ensuremath{\alpha}{)}^{4}\mathrm{He}$ two-body reaction by applying the ``Trojan horse'' method (THM) to the ${}^{6}\mathrm{Li}{(}^{6}\mathrm{Li},\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\alpha}{)}^{4}\mathrm{He}$ three-body reaction. The astrophysical $S(E)$ factor has been extracted in the energy range between 10--800 keV for the two cases of target and projectile quasifree break-up. We found good agreement between the two data sets leading an improved determination of the $S(E)$ with $S(0)=16.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5 \mathrm{MeV}\mathrm{b}.$ Furthermore, the electron screening potential energy ${U}_{e}=320\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}50$ eV has been extracted in a model-independent way by comparing direct and THM data. This value is significantly higher than the value predicted by current theoretical models.

Abstract

The Li-6(Li-6,alpha alpha)He-4 three-body reaction has been studied in a kinematically complete experiment at E-6Li = 6 MeV, from which indirect information on the H-2(Li-6, alpha)He-4 two-body reaction at 13 less than or equal toE(c.m.) less than or equal to 750 keV has been extracted by applying the Trojan horse method. The method used a recent improved formulation. The derived astrophysical S(E) factor for the two-body process is compared with that obtained from direct experiments.

Abstract

For the first time Borromean nucleus induced reactions have been measured below the three-body breakup threshold. A set of angular distributions for the single and two neutron transfer as well as on the charge exchange reaction channel has been obtained. The experimental data have sufficient angular coverage and precision to allow for the discrimination between different model predictions, which do not suffer from ambiguities introduced to the interpretation of experimental data due to flux losses into the three-body breakup channel. The viability of the idea is demonstrated in the case of nuclear reactions induced by the simplest Borromean nucleus, i.e., He-6, on a structureless target, i.e., protons. Comparison with different theoretical approaches suggest that coupled channel effects play an important role. A decrease of the model wave function's rms radius of 0.15 fm alters the predicted angular distributions such that they no longer follow the experimental results.

Abstract

The Trojan-Horse method has been applied to the 6Li(12C,α12C)2H reaction at 18 MeV in order to study the two-body α-12C interaction around the Coulomb barrier. Coincidence spectra show clear evidence of the quasi-free α-12C scattering, in good agreement with calculations performed in the framework of the Plane Wave Born Approximation. The virtual excitation function of the α-12C elastic scattering has been extracted and compared with the behavior of the free scattering cross section.

The Trojan Horse Method has been applied to obtain information about 7Li(p,α)4He reaction at astrophysical energies. The 7Li(d,α n)4He reaction has been used and the two body reaction cross section for the 7Li(p,α)4He has been extracted together with its astrophysical factor S(E).

Abstract

The 6Li(d,α)4He reaction, whose astrophysical importance is connected to the primordial nucleosynthesis in the framework of the Inhomogeneous Big Bang, has been studied by using the Trojan Horse Method (THM). We derive and discuss the cross section and the astrophysical S(E)-factor for Ecm=0.025−0.7 MeV. Results are compared with data from a direct measurement.

Abstract

The 6Li$ + d$reactionwasstudiedinordertoinvestigatethequasi - free$6Li(n, $\displaystyle \alpha$ )3H$reaction, offtheprotonin$2H$.Akinematicallycompleteexperimentwasperformedatabeamenergyof14 MeV.Coincidencespectrashowthecontributionofthequasi - free$n + $6Li reaction in the relative energy range from 1.5MeV down to zero. The extracted 6Li(n,α)3H quasi-free cross-section was compared with the behavior of direct data throughout the investigated energy range. No penetrability corrections were introduced on the quasi-free data, being the 6Li(n,α)3H direct reaction free of Coulomb suppression.

Trabajo presentado a la "5th International Conference FUSION11" celebrada del 2 al 6 de mayo del 2011 en Francia.-- This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial License 3.0.-- et al., The collision induced by the three Beryllium isotopes, Be-9,Be-10,Be-11, on a Zn-64 target were investigated at E-c.m. approximate to 1.4 the Coulomb barrier. The experiments with the radioactive Be-10,Be-11 beams were performed at the Rex-Isolde facility at CERN. In the case of 9'1 Be, elastic scattering angular distributions were measured whereas, in the Be-11 case, the quasielastic scattering angular distribution was obtained. A strong damping of the quasielastic cross-section was observed in the Be-11 case, in the angular range around the Coulomb-nuclear interference peak. In this latter case a large totalreaction cross-section is found. Such a cross-section is more than a factor of two larger than the ones extracted in the reactions induced by the non-halo Beryllium isotopes. A large contribution to the total-reaction cross-section in the Be-11 case could be attributed to transfer and/or break-up events.

Abstract

The 8Li elastic scattering on 4He in inverse kinematics has been studied in order to search for 8Li-α cluster configurations in excited states of 12B. The experimental technique, the inverse kinematic thick target method (TTIK), involved a 8Li beam provided by the EXCYT facility at an initial energy of Eb=30.6 MeV which is continuously degraded down to zero in the passage through a helium extended thick target. After the interaction, the recoil alpha particles were detected by using four ΔE-E silicon detector telescopes. The explored 8Li-α centre-of-mass energy ranges from ECM=2.7 MeV up to ECM=9.6 MeV. A micro-channel plate, placed before the gas chamber, is used to measure the time interval between the entrance of the 8Li into the chamber and the arrival of the recoil alpha particle on the detectors. This "time interval" measurement improves the TTIK technique allowing the discrimination of elastic from inelastic events. In this paper, the experimental technique will be described and the preliminary results for the elastic cross section will be shown.

Abstract

International audience; The 8 Li+ 4 He → 11 B+n reaction inside the center of mass energy region E cm = 0.5 − 2.5 MeV, corresponding to the temperature range T 9 = 1 − 5, is of relevant interest in the fields of nuclear cosmology and nuclear astrophysics. In the context of Big-Bang nucleosynthesis, it has been invoked to overcome the A=8 mass gap ; in r-process nucleosynthesis, it is considered a candidate precursor of seed nuclei. In this experimental work, the cross section, summed over all 11 B final bound states, at the energy of 1.05 MeV in the center-of-mass system, is investigated by a correction-free projectile-correlated inclusive neutron measurement. The radioactive 8 Li beam delivered by the EXCYT facility at LNS-Catania is used to induce the inversekinematics reaction process. A zero-energy-threshold 4π detection system is used. Thanks to the improved experimental and analysis procedures, the result obtained in this work represents a strong argument to reopen the debate on the magnitude of the 8 Li(α, n) 11 B reaction rate in explosive astrophysical environments.

This digital optical module has a novel design with a very large photocathode area segmented by the use of 31 three inch photomultiplier tubes. It has been integrated in the ANTARES detector for in-situ testing and validation. This paper reports on the first months of data taking and rate measurements. The analysis results highlight the capabilities of the new module design in terms of background suppression and signal recognition. The directionality of the optical module enables the recognition of multiple Cherenkov photons from the same40 K decay and the localisation of bioluminescent activity in the neighbourhood. The single unit can cleanly identify atmospheric muons and provide sensitivity to the muon arrival directions
