Astrophysics - Abstract
It has been recently proposed that the shocked surface layers of exploding O-Ne-Mg cores provide the conditions for r-process nucleosynthesis, because their rapid expansion and high entropies enable heavy r-process isotopes to form even in an environment with very low initial neutron excess of the matter. We show here that the most sophisticated available hydrodynamic simulations (in spherical and axial symmetry) do not support this new r-process scenario because they fail to provide the necessary conditions of temperature, entropy, and expansion timescale by significant factors. This suggests that, either the formation of r-process elements works differently than suggested by Ning et al. (2007, NQM07), or that some essential core properties with influence on the explosion dynamics might be different from those predicted by Nomoto's progenitor model., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures; accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics; significantly extended to account for referee's suggestions and questions

Astrophysics - Abstract
We report here on recent progress in understanding the birth conditions of neutron stars and the way how supernovae explode. More sophisticated numerical models have led to the discovery of new phenomena in the supernova core, for example a generic hydrodynamic instability of the stagnant supernova shock against low-mode nonradial deformation and the excitation of gravity-wave activity in the surface and core of the nascent neutron star. Both can have supportive or decisive influence on the inauguration of the explosion, the former by improving the conditions for energy deposition by neutrino heating in the postshock gas, the latter by supplying the developing blast with a flux of acoustic power that adds to the energy transfer by neutrinos. While recent two-dimensional models suggest that the neutrino-driven mechanism may be viable for stars from about 8 solar masses to at least 15 solar masses, acoustic energy input has been advocated as an alternative if neutrino heating fails. Magnetohydrodynamic effects constitute another way to trigger explosions in connection with the collapse of sufficiently rapidly rotating stellar cores, perhaps linked to the birth of magnetars. The global explosion asymmetries seen in the recent simulations offer an explanation of even the highest measured kick velocities of young neutron stars., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 19 ps files; to be published in Proc. of Conf. Astrophysics ,High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We discuss the flavor conversion of neutrinos from core collapse supernovae that have oxygen-neon-magnesium (ONeMg) cores. Using the numerically calculated evolution of the star up to 650 ms post bounce, we find that, for the normal mass hierarchy, the electron neutrino flux in a detector shows signatures of two typical features of an ONeMg-core supernova: a sharp step in the density profile at the base of the He shell and a faster shock wave propagation compared to iron core supernovae. Before the shock hits the density step (t ~ 150 ms), the survival probability of electron neutrinos is about 0.68, in contrast to values of 0.32 or less for an iron core supernova. The passage of the shock through the step and its subsequent propagation cause a decrease of the survival probability and a decrease of the amplitude of oscillations in the Earth, reflecting the transition to a more adiabatic propagation inside the star. These changes affect the lower energy neutrinos first; they are faster and more sizable for larger theta_13. They are unique of ONeMg-core supernovae, and give the possibility to test the speed of the shock wave. The time modulation of the Earth effect and its negative sign at the neutronization peak are the most robust signatures in a detector., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures (16 figure files). Nuclear Theory ,High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The photon bremsstrahlung rate from a quark jet produced in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) off a large nucleus is studied in the collinear limit. The leading medium-enhanced higher twist corrections which describe the multiple scattering of the jet in the nucleus are re-summed to all orders of twist. The propagation of the jet in the absence of further radiative energy loss is shown to be governed by a transverse momentum diffusion equation. We compute the final photon spectrum in the limit of soft photons, taking into account the leading and next-to-leading terms in the photon momentum fraction y. In this limit, the photon spectrum in a physical gauge is shown to arise from two interfering sources: one where the initial hard scattering produces an off-shell quark which immediately radiates the photon and then undergoes subsequent soft re-scattering; alternatively the quark is produced on-shell and propagates through the medium until it is driven off-shell by re-scattering and radiates the photon. Our result has a simple formal structure as a product of the photon splitting function, the quark transverse momentum distribution coming from a diffusion equation and a dimensionless factor which encodes the effect of the interferences encountered by the propagating quark over the length of the medium. The destructive nature of such interferences in the small y limit are responsible for the origin of the Landau-Pomeranchuck-Migdal (LPM) effect. Along the way we also discuss possible implications for quark jets in hot nuclear matter., Comment: 24 pages, 3 figures, Revtex4

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
The kink in the dispersion and the drop in the width observed by angle-resolved photoemission in the nodal direction of the Brillouin zone of $\mathrm{Bi_{2-x}Pb_xSr_2CaCu_2O_{8+ \delta}}$ (abbreviated as (Pb)Bi2212) has attracted broad interest [1-3]. Surprisingly optimally lead-doped (Pb)Bi2212 with $\mathrm{T_C>89K}$ as well as the shadow band were not investigated so far, although the origin of the kink and the drop is still under strong debate. In this context a resonant magnetic-mode scenario and an electron-phonon coupling scenario are discussed controversially. Here we analyze the relevant differences between both scenarios and conclude that the kink and the drop are caused by a coupling of the electronic system to a phononic mode at least in the nodal direction. It is found that besides the dispersion and the drop in the width also the peak height as a new criterion can be used to define the energy scale of the interaction, giving a new means for a precise and consistent determination of the kink energy.

Based on the shell model for Gamow-Teller and the Random Phase Approximation for forbidden transitions, we have calculated reaction rates for inelastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (INNS) under supernova (SN) conditions, assuming a matter composition given by Nuclear Statistical Equilibrium. The rates have been incorporated into state-of-the-art stellar core-collapse simulations with detailed energy-dependent neutrino transport. While no significant effect on the SN dynamics is observed, INNS increases the neutrino opacities noticeably and strongly reduces the high-energy tail of the neutrino spectrum emitted in the neutrino burst at shock breakout. Relatedly the expected event rates for the observation of such neutrinos by earthbound detectors are reduced by up to about 60%., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

The transverse broadening of jets produced in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) off a large nucleus is studied in the collinear limit. A class of medium enhanced higher twist corrections are re-summed to calculate the transverse momentum distribution of the produced collinear jet. In contrast to previous approaches, resummation of the leading length enhanced higher twist corrections is shown to lead to a two dimensional diffusion equation for the transverse momentum of the propagating jet. Results for the average transverse momentum obtained from this approach are then compared to the broadening expected from a classical Langevin analysis for the propagation of the jet under the action of the fluctuating color Lorentz force inside the nucleons. The set of approximations that lead to identical results from the two approaches are outlined. The relationship between the momentum diffusion constant $D$ and the transport coefficient $\hat{q}$ is explicitly derived., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, revtex4, references added, typos corrected, discussion updated

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We derive an expression relating the transport parameter $\hat{q}$ and the shear viscosity $\eta$ of a weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma. A deviation from this relation can be regarded as a quantitative measure of ``strong coupling'' of the medium. The ratio $T^3/\hat{q}$, where $T$ is the temperature, is a more broadly valid measure of the coupling strength of the medium than $\eta/s$, where $s$ denotes the entropy density. Different estimates of $\hat{q}$ derived from existing RHIC data are shown to imply radically different structures of the produced matter.

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
It is well known that the (1x5) superstructure of Bi cuprate superconductors will be suppressed due to optimum doping with Pb. Nevertheless, a Fermi surface map of (Pb,La)-Bi2201 (Pb = 0.4 and La = 0.4) determined by angular resolved photoemission (ARPES) revealed additional Fermi surface features. Low energy electron diffraction and X-ray diffraction of these samples showed no sign of any superstructure. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), on the other hand, revealed two distinct modulations of the charge density, one of (1x32) and a second of (6x6) periodicity. The wave vectors of both modulations have been extracted and used to simulate the corresponding Fermi surface, which is compared with the experimental one. The origin of these modulations is discussed in terms of dopant ordering., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for Solid State Communications

We argue that an expanding quark-gluon plasma has an anomalous viscosity, which arises from interactions with dynamically generated colour fields. The anomalous viscosity dominates over the collisional viscosity for large velocity gradients or weak coupling. This effect may provide an explanation for the apparent near perfect liquidity of the matter produced in nuclear collisions at RHIC without the assumption that it is a strongly coupled state., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, to appear in the proceedings of the 19th International Conference on Ultrarelativistic Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions: Quark Matter 2006 (QM 2006), Shanghai, China, 14-20 Nov 2006

Astrophysics - Abstract
Advances in our understanding and the modeling of stellar core-collapse and supernova explosions over the past 15 years are reviewed, concentrating on the evolution of hydrodynamical simulations, the description of weak interactions and nuclear equation of state effects, and new insights into the nucleosynthesis occurring in the early phases of the explosion, in particular the neutrino-p process. The latter is enabled by the proton-richness of the early ejecta, which was discovered because of significant progress has been made in the treatment of neutrino transport and weak interactions. This progress has led to a new generation of sophisticated Newtonian and relativistic hydrodynamics simulations in spherical symmetry. Based on these, it is now clear that the prompt bounce-shock mechanism is not the driver of supernova explosions, and that the delayed neutrino-heating mechanism can produce explosions without the aid of multi-dimensional processes only if the progenitor star has an ONeMg core inside a very dilute He-core, i.e., has a mass in the 8--10 solar mass range. Hydrodynamic instabilities of various kinds have indeed been recognized to occur in the supernova core and to be of potential importance for the explosion. Neutrino-driven explosions, however, have been seen in two-dimensional simulations with sophisticated neutrino transport so far only when the star has a small iron core and low density in the surrounding shells as being found in stars near 10--11 solar masses. The explosion mechanism of more massive progenitors is still a puzzle. It might involve effects of three-dimensional hydrodynamics or might point to the relevance of rapid rotation and magnetohydrodynamics, or to still incompletely explored properties of neutrinos and the high-density equation of state., Comment: 49 pages, 20 figures; submitted to the Bethe Centennial Volume of Physics Reports

The ratios of off-diagonal to diagonal conserved charge susceptibilities e.g., chi_{BS}/chi_{S}, chi_{QS}/chi_{S}, related to the quark flavor susceptibilities, have proven to be discerning probes of the flavor carrying degrees of freedom in hot strongly interacting matter. Various constraining relations between the different susceptibilities are derived based on the Gell-Mann-Nishijima formula and the assumption of isospin symmetry. Using generic models of deconfined matter and results form lattice QCD, it is demonstrated that the flavor carrying degrees of freedom at a temperature above 1.5T_c are quark-like quasiparticles. A new observable related by isospin symmetry to C_{BS} = -3chi_{BS}/chi_{S} and equal to it in the baryon free regime is identified. This new observable, which is blind to neutral and non-strange particles, carries the potential of being measured in relativistic heavy-ion collisions., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, RevTex4

We study the semiclassical Wigner-Kirkwood (WK) expansion of the partition function $Z(t)$ for arbitrary even homogeneous potentials, starting from the Bloch equation. As is well known, the phase-space kernel of $Z$ satisfies the so-called Uhlenbeck-Beth equation, which depends on the gradients of the potential. We perform a chain of transformations to obtain novel forms of this equation that invite analogies with various physical phenomena and formalisms, such as diffusion processes, the Fokker-Planck equation, and supersymmetric quantum mechanics.

This represents the first measurement of the Drell-Yan cross section in $pp$ collisions over a broad kinematic region and the most extensive study to date of the Drell-Yan cross section in $pd$ collisions. The results indicate that recent global parton distribution fits provide a good description of the light antiquark sea in the nucleon over the Bjorken-$x$ range $0.03 \lesssim x < 0.15$, but overestimate the valence quark distributions as $x \to 1$., Comment: submitted to Phys. - Subjects
Nuclear Theory ,High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We calculate the production of high energy photons from Compton scattering and annihilation of a quark jet passing through a quark gluon plasma produced in a relativistic heavy ion collision. The contributions are large and reflect the momentum distribution of the jets and the initial conditions of the plasma., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; v2: manuscript slightly shortened, some additional comments added, this version published in PRL

Nuclear Theory - Abstract
We study the microscopic dynamics of quarks and gluons in relativistic heavy ion collisions in the framework of the Parton Cascade Model. We use lowest order perturbative QCD cross sections with fixed lower momentum cutoff p_0. We calculate the time-evolution of the Debye-screening mass for Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV per nucleon pair. The screening mass is used to determine a lower limit for the allowed range of p_0. We also determine the energy density reached through hard and semi-hard processes at RHIC, obtain a lower bound for the rapidity density of charged hadrons produced by semihard interactions, and analyze the extent of perturbative rescattering among partons., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, uses RevTeX 4.0; revised version with minor corrections and one updated figure

This work adresses the question of the scaling behaviour of polyelectrolytes in solution for a realistic prototype: We show results of a combined experimental (light scattering) and theoretical (computer simulations) investigation of structural properties of poly (acrylic acid) (PAA). Experimentally, we determined the molecular weight (M_W) and the hydrodynamic radius (R_H) by static light scattering for six different PAA samples in aqueous NaCl-containing solution (0.1-1 mol/L) of polydispersity D_P between 1.5 and 1.8. On the computational side, three different variants of a newly developed mesoscopic force field for PAA were employed to determine R_H for monodisperse systems of the same M_W as in the experiments. The force field effectively incorporates atomistic information and one coarse-grained bead corresponds to one PAA monomer. We find that R_H matches with the experimental data for all investigated samples. The effective scaling exponent for R_H is found to be around 0.55, which is well below its asymptotic value for good solvents. Additionally, data for the radius of gyration (R_G) are presented., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Macromolecules

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We present a measurement of the polarization observed for bottomonium states produced in p-Cu collisions at sqrt(s)=38.8 GeV. The angular distribution of the decay dimuons of the Upsilon(1S) state show no polarization at small xF and pT but significant positive transverse production polarization for either pT > 1.8 GeV/c or for xF > 0.35. The Upsilon(2S+3S) unresolved states show a large transverse production polarization at all values of xF and pT measured. These observations are compared with an NRQCD calculation that predicts a transverse polarization in bottomonium production arising from quark-antiquark fusion and gluon-gluon fusion diagrams., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
We report the first measurement of the vector analyzing power in inclusive transversely polarized elastic electron-proton scattering at Q^2 = 0.1 (GeV/c)^2 and large scattering angles. This quantity should vanish in the single virtual photon exchange, plane wave impulse approximation for this reaction, and can therefore provide information on double photon exchange amplitudes for electromagnetic interactions with hadronic systems. We find a non-zero value of A=-15.4+/-5.4 ppm. No calculations of this observable for nuclei other than spin 0 have been carried out in these kinematics, and the calculation using the spin orbit interaction from a charged point nucleus of spin 0 cannot describe these data., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. We calculate the Drell-Yan cross section, resolving the full kinematics of the lepton pair, at high transverse momentum for hadron nucleus collisions. We use the general framework of Luo, Qiu and Sterman to calculate double scattering contributions that are of twist-4 and demonstrate their nuclear enhancement. By comparing single and double scattering at RHIC energies we find that double scattering gives contributions of comparable size. We also show that the angular dependence of the Drell-Yan pair discriminates between the various double scattering contributions., Comment: 30 pages LaTeX, 32 eps-files in 12 figures

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
We report the development and implementation of an energy feedback system for the MIT/Bates Linear Accelerator Center. General requirements of the system are described, as are the specific requirements, features, and components of the system unique to its implementation at the Bates Laboratory. We demonstrate that with the system in operation, energy fluctuations correlated with the 60 Hz line voltage and with drifts of thermal origin are reduced by an order of magnitude.

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Measurements of the suppression of the yield per nucleon of J/Psi and Psi' production for 800 GeV/c protons incident on heavy relative to light nuclear targets have been made with very broad coverage in xF and pT. The observed suppression is smallest at xF values of 0.25 and below and increases at larger values of xF. It is also strongest at small pT. Substantial differences between the Psi' and J/Psi are observed for the first time in p-A collisions. The suppression for the Psi' is stronger than that for the J/Psi for xF near zero, but becomes comparable to that for the J/Psi for xF > 0.6., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication by PRL

We calculate the nuclear enhancement in the angular distribution of Drell-Yan pairs produced in proton-nucleus reactions. Nuclear effects are encoded in universal twist-4 parton correlation functions. We find that the Lam-Tung relation for the angular coefficients of the lepton-pair distribution holds for the double-hard, but not for the soft-hard contribution. We also predict that nuclear enhancement effects at RHIC energies can be large., Comment: 4 pages LaTeX, 5 figures; v2: discussion in the summary extended, some references added; v3: manuscript somewhat shortened, eq. We investigate the relationship between the Lyapunov exponents of periodic trajectories, the average and fluctuations of Lyapunov exponents of ergodic trajectories, and the ergodic autocorrelation time for the two-dimensional hyperbola billiard. We then study the fluctuation properties of the ergodic Lyapunov spectrum of classical SU(2) gauge theory on a lattice. Our results are consistent with the notion that this system is globally hyperbolic. Among the many powerful theorems applicable to such systems, we discuss one relating to the fluctuations in the entropy growth rate., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

A precise measurement of the ratios of the Drell-Yan cross section per nucleon for an 800 GeV/c proton beam incident on Be, Fe and W targets is reported. The behavior of the Drell-Yan ratios at small target parton momentum fraction is well described by an existing fit to the shadowing observed in deep-inelastic scattering. The cross section ratios as a function of the incident parton momentum fraction set tight limits on the energy loss of quarks passing through a cold nucleus.

Nuclear Theory - Abstract
The dynamics of gluons and quarks in a relativistic nuclear collision are described, within the framework of a classical mean-field transport theory, by the coupled equations for the Yang-Mills field and a collection of colored point particles. The particles are used to represent color source effects of the valence quarks in the colliding nuclei. The possibilities of this approach are studied to describe the real time evolution of small $x$ modes in the classical effective theory in a non-perturbative coherent manner. The time evolution of the color fields is explored in a numerical simulation of the collision of two Lorentz-boosted clouds of color charged particles on a long three-dimensional gauge lattice. We report results on soft gluon scattering and coherent gluon radiation obtained in SU(2) gauge symmetry., Comment: 16 pages and 17 postscript figures

The Yang Mills equations provide a classical mean field description of gauge fields. In view of developing a coherent description of the formation of the quark gluon plasma in high energetic nucleus-nucleus collisions we study pure gauge field dynamics in 3+1 dimensions. In collisions of wave packets, numerically simulated on a SU(2) gauge lattice, we study transverse and longitudinal energy currents. For wave packets with different polarizations in color space, we observe a time delayed fragmentation after the collision resulting in a rapid expansion into transverse directions. We call this phenomenon the ''glue burst''. An analysis of the Yang Mills equations reveals the explanation for this behavior. We point out that this effect could play a role in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions., Comment: 35 pages, 9 ps figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. D

In a fully relativistic approach, a RLSM description of nuclei colliding at ultra-relativistic energies can be formulated within the framework of a classical transport theory. The valence quarks of the nucleons are described through collections of classical point-like particles moving in the continuum. They are coupled to soft gluon fields which are described through the Yang Mills equations on a gauge lattice. In a first step, we focus on the range of low-$p_t$ interactions. Results from numerical model simulations of pure gluonic nucleus-nucleus collisions on SU(2) gauge lattices in 3+1 dimensions are presented. Vacuum polarization mediated by quark loops is susceptible to external electromagnetic fields as well as to the QCD vacuum structure. Employing the stochastic vacuum model, we calculate the modification of the one-loop Euler-Heisenberg effective action due to stochastic color fields with the Fock-Schwinger technique. Our results indicate nonperturbative light quark contributions of the same order of magnitude as the usual QED terms.
