Abstract

This thesis examines the integrationsgrunduddannelse (IGU) which is an education in Denmark for newly arrived immigrants that seek to improve their employment possibilities. The thesis examines the education in a municipality based on participant’s perspectives. The focus of the thesis has been on identifying conditions that create constraints and possibilities for certain IGU students’ employment possibilities. The thesis examines the following research question: How is the integrationsgrunuddannelse organized in Kirkeby municipality and which possibilities and constraints does the IGU create regarding the IGU student’s labor market attachment?The empirical foundation of this thesis is based on qualitative methods which concern eight interviews, four observations and statutory documents. This thesis’ theoretical approach is critical psychology. The theory has contributed to emphasize that human beings are a part of two-sided interrelationship with its surroundings. In the light of our qualitative outcome, the theory has enabled us to underline how the IGU interacts with the students’ everyday life and how this interrelation creates conditions that affect their possibilities for employment.The thesis’ analysis consists of two separate analyses. Our first analysis shows that the establishment of IGU courses does not follow the law directions regarding student and company establish an IGU course together. The organization of IGU courses was done by two employees within Kirkeby municipality. Our second analysis shows that the organization has an impact on the students’ conditions regarding their labor market attachment. More specific their possibilities are underlined through the students’ match, internship, economic and education courses.On the basis of our analyses, the thesis concludes that the IGU in Kirkeby municipality both creates opportunities and constraints regarding the IGU student’s labor market attachment. Furthermore, it concludes that there are three salient constraints for the students. The first constraint is in the matching process. Students that are matched with companies offering job roles that do not require interpersonal communication are at risk of not expanding their employment possibilities within industries that require language skills in Danish. The second constraint concerns the students’ economic scope during the IGU as it can constrict them in developing skills that can contribute to their employment possibilities. The third constraint is found within the students’ teaching courses as the students have largely experienced that the teaching doesn’t contribute to developing skills that increase their chances of getting an employment offer after their internship ends. The three constraints have been challenged by presenting improvement proposals that can enhance the students’ labor market attachment.

International audience; The advent of space-based missions like Kepler has revolutionized the study of solar-type stars, particularly through the measurement and modeling of their resonant modes of oscillation. Here we analyze a sample of 66 Kepler main-sequence stars showing solar-like oscillations as part of the Kepler seismic LEGACY project. We use Kepler short-cadence data, of which each star has at least 12 months, to create frequency power spectra optimized for asteroseismology. For each star we identify its modes of oscillation and extract parameters such as frequency, amplitude, and line width using a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo 'peak-bagging' approach. We report the extracted mode parameters for all 66 stars, as well as derived quantities such as frequency difference ratios, the large and small separations ∆ν and δν 02 ; the behavior of line widths with frequency and line widths at ν max with T eff , for which we derive parametrizations; and behavior of mode visibilities. These average properties can be applied in future peak-bagging exercises to better constrain the parameters of the stellar oscillation spectra. The frequencies and frequency ratios can tightly constrain the fundamental parameters of these solar-type stars, and mode line widths and amplitudes can test models of mode damping and excitation.

Abstract

Background and purpose: Local recurrence is frequent in locally advanced NSCLC and is primarily located in FDG-avid parts of tumour and lymph nodes. Aiming at improving local control without increasing toxicity, we designed a multi-centre phase-III trial delivering inhomogeneous dose-escalation driven by FDG-avid volumes, while respecting normal tissue constraints and requiring no increase in mean lung dose. Dose-escalation driven by FDG-avid volumes, delivering mean doses of 95 Gy (tumour) and 74 Gy (lymph nodes), was pursued and compared to standard 66 Gy/33 F plans. Material and methods: Dose plans for the first thirty patients enroled were analysed. Standard and escalated plans were created for all patients, blinded to randomization, and compared for each patient in terms of the ability to escalate while protecting normal tissue. Results: The median dose-escalation in FDG-avid areas was 93.9 Gy (tumour) and 73.0 Gy (lymph nodes). Escalation drove the GTV and CTV to mean doses for the tumour of 87.5 Gy (GTV-T) and 81.3 Gy (CTV-T) in median. No significant differences in mean dose to lung and heart between standard and escalated were found, but small volumes of e.g. the bronchi received doses between 66 and 74 Gy due to escalation. Conclusions: FDG-driven inhomogeneous dose-escalation achieves large increment in tumour and lymph node dose, while delivering similar doses to normal tissue as homogenous standard plans.

International audience; The goal of AIMS is to estimate stellar parameters and credible intervals/error bars in a Bayesian manner from a set of seismic frequency data and so-called classic constraints. To achieve reliable parameter estimates and computational efficiency it searches through a grid of pre-computed models using an MCMC algorithm interpolation within the grid of models is performed by first tessellating the grid using a Delaunay triangulation and then doing a linear barycentric interpolation on matching simplexes. Inputs for the modelling consists of individual frequencies from peak-bagging, which can be complemented with classic spectroscopic constraints. AIMS is mostly written in Python with a modular structure to facilitate contributions from the community. Only a few computationally intensive parts have been rewritten in Fortran in order to speed up calculations.

Abstract

NASA’s exoplanet Discovery mission Kepler was reconstituted as the K2 mission a year after the failure of the 2nd of Kepler’s 4 reaction wheels in May 2013. The new spacecraft pointing method now gives typical roll motion of 1.0 pixels peak-to-peak over 6 hours at the edges of the field, two orders of magnitude greater than for Kepler. Despite these roll errors, the flight system and its modified data processing pipeline restores much of the photometric precision of the primary mission while viewing a wide variety of targets, thus turning adversity into diversity. We define metrics for data compression and pixel budget available in each campaign; the photometric noise on exoplanet transit and stellar activity time scales; residual correlations in corrected long cadence light curves; and the protection of test sinusoidal signals from overfitting in the systematic error removal process. We find that data compression and noise both increase linearly with radial distance from the center of the field of view, while the data compression also increases as the square root of star count. For sufficiently dense star fields, such as the Galactic Center, the data entropy so high that Huffman compression is ineffective and only requantization is used. At the FOV center, where roll motion is nearly negligible, the limiting 6 hour photometric precision for a quiet 12th magnitude star can be as low as 30 ppm, only 25% higher than that of Kepler. This noise performance is achieved without sacrificing signal fidelity; test sinusoids injected into the data are attenuated by less than 10% for signals with periods up 15 days. At time scales relevant to asteroseismology, light curves derived from K2 archive calibrated pixels have high-frequency noise amplitude within 40% of that achieved by Kepler. These improvements follow from the data analysis efforts of Kepler Science Operation Center and Kepler Science Office, and from the operational improvements developed by Ball Aerospace and LASP, during the first 1.5 yr of K2. Abstract

Experimental results for the restricted energy loss of ultrarelativistic electrons, with Lorentz factors up to 3 × 10 5 , in a 535 μ m thin silicon detector are presented. The combination of high Lorentz factors and thin targets, opens for the possibility to study two mutually excluding effects, both based upon theory and on scarce experimental observations. One is a disappearance of the density effect when the transit time becomes so short that the effect of plasma-oscillations becomes negligible. This would result in an increased energy loss as the Lorentz factor increases. The other is an effect based on the existence of a coherence length over which there are contributions to the energy loss. This effect leads to a substantially decreased energy loss for thin targets as the Lorentz factor increases. The latter is shown to be incompatible with our measurements, whereas the former may be present with a correction of a few percent to an otherwise constant energy loss. Furthermore, we point to significant effects related to synchrotron and transition radiation, that must be carefully considered in a possible future experiment, and may as well have been of significance for the conclusion in earlier experiments.

Abstract

We describe three useful applications of asteroseismology in the context of exoplanet science: (1) the detailed characterisation of exoplanet host stars; (2) the measurement of stellar inclinations; and (3) the determination of orbital eccentricity from transit duration making use of asteroseismic stellar densities. We do so using the example system Kepler-410 [1]. This is one of the brightest (V = 9.4) Kepler exoplanet host stars, containing a small (2.8 R⊕) transiting planet in a long orbit (17.8 days), and one or more additional non-transiting planets as indicated by transit timing variations. The validation of Kepler-410 (KOI-42) was complicated due to the presence of a companion star, and the planetary nature of the system was confirmed after analyzing a Spitzer transit observation as well as ground-based follow-up observations.

Abstract

The LEGACY sample represents the best solar-like stars observed in the Kepler mission[5, 8]. The 66 stars in the sample are all on the main sequence or only slightly more evolved. They each have more than one year's observation data in short cadence, allowing for precise extraction of individual frequencies. Here we present model fits using a modified ASTFIT procedure employing two different near-surface-effect corrections, one by Christensen-Dalsgaard[4] and a newer correction proposed by Ball & Gizon[1]. We then compare the results obtained using the different corrections. We find that using the latter correction yields lower masses and significantly lower χ2 values for a large part of the sample. Abstract

The structural stratification of a solar-type main-sequence star primarily depends on its mass and chemical composition. The surface heavy element abundances of the solar-type stars are reasonably well determined using conventional spectroscopy; however, the second most abundant element helium is not. This is due to the fact that the envelope temperature of such stars is not high enough to excite helium. Since the helium abundance of a star affects its structure and subsequent evolution, the uncertainty in the helium abundance of a star makes estimates of its global properties (mass, radius, age etc.) uncertain as well. The detections of the signatures of the acoustic glitches from the precisely measured stellar oscillation frequencies provide an indirect way to estimate the envelope helium content. We use the glitch signature caused by the ionization of helium to determine the envelope helium abundance of 38 stars in the Kepler seismic LEGACY sample. Our results confirm that atomic diffusion does indeed take place in solar-type stars. We use the measured surface abundances in combination with the settling predicted by the stellar models to determine the initial abundances. The initial helium and metal mass fractions have subsequently been used to get the preliminary estimates of the primordial helium abundance, Y p = 0.244 ± 0.019, and the Galactic enrichment ratio, Δ Y /Δ Z  = 1.226 ± 0.849. Although the current estimates have large errorbars due to the limited sample size, this method holds great promises to determine these parameters precisely in the era of upcoming space missions.
