104. Density functional theory calculations of nuclear quadrupole coupling constants with calibrated 17O quadrupole moments.

Abstract

Density functional calculations of the electric field gradient tensor at the oxygen nucleus in O2, OCS, HNCO, CO, H2O, H2CO and C2H4O have been performed using the linear combination of Gaussian-type orbital Kohn-Sham density functional theory (LCGTO-KS-DFT) approach. The calculations were of all-electron type using local and gradient corrected functionals. All molecular structures were fully optimized at both levels of theory employing small and extended basis sets. For the calculation of the nuclear quadrupole coupling constants of the molecules studied, calibrated 17O nuclear quadruple moments were derived for the different basis sets and exchange-correlation functionals. With these calibrated 17O nuclear quadrupole moments the nuclear quadrupole resonance spectra of organic carbonyl compounds were calculated. The calculated and experimental spectra are in good agreement, therefore making an assignment of structural features possible. This work demonstrates that an accurate prediction of nuclear quadrupole resonance spectra is possible with only modest computational effort using density functional methods in combination with calibrated quadrupole moments. Abstract

Nine well studied ( polar and non-polar) planar solutes have been used as probes to investigate the mechanism for orientational ordering in the nematic phase. Second-rank orientational order parameters have been derived from proton dipolar coupling constants, obtained from the NMR spectra of these molecules dissolved in a 55 wt% ZLI1132 + EBBA nematic mixture. The experimental data are interpreted in terms of an orienting potential experienced by molecules in a liquid crystal environment. A model for the orienting potential is presented which includes, in addition to short-range repulsion interactions described by the surface tensor model, long-range contributions treated according to a generalized reaction field approach. Least-squares fits of solvent dependent parameters to the experimental data have been performed to estimate the weight of the various contributions to the solute orientational order, and the results obtained in this way are discussed. Finally, the results obtained with the surface tensor model are compared with those from the size-shape potential suggested by other workers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The structure of 2,2-difluorobiphenyl in the solid, crystalline phase has been determined by X-ray diffraction. In this phase the molecules are all in a single conformation having the two fluorine nuclei in a syn -arrangment, with the two ring normals at 58 to one another. The structure of the same molecule, but dissolved in a liquid crystalline solvent has been investigated by NMR spectroscopy. In the liquid crystalline phase there is rotation about the inter-ring bond through an angle phi , with a probability distribution P(phi) which has an absolute maximum at the syn-form with phi about 51 . There is also a second maximum in P(phi) at about 130 , corresponding to the anti-form. The syn- and anti-forms are present in the approximate ratio 0.58:0.42. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Zeolites are mainly used as heterogeneous catalysts, with an increasing use as gas-separation adsorbents. Their properties as adsorbents are described by adsorption isotherms and isosteric heats of adsorption. Two methods are presented that predict isosteric heats of adsorption of gaseous molecules at low coverages. Both methods are based on the quantum mechanical (QM) evaluation of the interaction between the molecule adsorbed and the cationic site treated as an embedded cation. The first method uses Boltzmann statistics, whereas the other method assumes that adsorption at low pressure can be described with a Langmuir model. These two procedures yield very comparable isosteric heats for N2 and O2 in Ca-A and Ca-LSX. Their comparison allows us to underline the strong heterogeneity of N2 adsorption in Ca-LSX and the effect of temperature on the equilibrium constant of adsorption.

Abstract

The past decade has seen extraordinary increase in worldwide availability of and access to several large multiple sclerosis (MS) databases and registries. MS registries represent powerful tools to provide meaningful information on the burden, natural history, and long-term safety and effectiveness of treatments. Moreover, patients, physicians, industry, and policy makers have an active interest in real-world observational studies based on register data, as they have the potential to answer the questions that are most relevant to daily treatment decision-making. In 2014, the Italian MS Foundation, in collaboration with the Italian MS clinical centers, promoted and funded the creation of the Italian MS Register, a project in continuity with the existing Italian MS Database Network set up from 2001. Main objective of the Italian MS Register is to create an organized multicenter structure to collect data of all MS patients for better defining the disease epidemiology, improving quality of care, and promoting research projects in high-priority areas. The aim of this article is to present the current framework and network of the Italian MS register, including the methodology used to improve the quality of data collection and to facilitate the exchange of data and the collaboration among national and international groups. Abstract

Terra dei Fuochi (TdF), the so-called 'Land of Fires' in Southern Italy, is an agricultural territory characterized by illegal dumping of toxic waste known to occur since the 1980s. It is unknown whether prognosis of patients developing cancer and living in that area may differ compared to those living in areas not exposed to this specific type of pollution. We retrospectively analyzed the 5-year survival rates of patients originating from the TdF diagnosed with lung cancer compared to patients from other areas.Patients consecutively operated on for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) between November 2004 and April 2013 at the Division of Thoracic Surgery of the National Cancer Institute of Naples were eligible. The study outcome was overall survival (OS). In addition, the TdF and non-TdF groups were compared through propensity score matching (PSM).Overall, 439 patients with resectable NSCLC were operated on, 123 (28%) from the TdF and 316 (72%) from other referral centers of our catchment area. There were 301 males and 138 females; the median age of the entire surgical population was 65 years (range=25-83) years. Apart from a different prevalence of hypertension and underweight patients, preoperative factors were evenly distributed between the two groups. At univariate analysis, OS was not different between the TdF and non TdF group (median 72 and 68 months, respectively; p=0.75 log-rank test). Multivariable analysis confirmed that living in the TdF area had no prognostic impact (hazard ratio=1.05; 95% confidence interval=0.70-1.57; p=0.78) on OS. PSM confirmed no statistically significant difference of OS (hazard ratio=1.01, 95% confidence interval=0.67-1.52; p=0.93).Following surgery for lung cancer, TdF and non-TdF surgical candidates had similar long-term survival. Originating from the TdF does not seem to be associated with worse outcomes after surgical treatment of patients with lung cancer.

130. Intermolecular interactions as controlling factor for water sorption into polymer membranes.

Abstract

A multidisciplinary approach was used for delineating the mechanisms controlling water sorption into modified block co-poly-(ether/amide) (PEBAX) membranes. In particular, incorporation of aromatic sulfonamide (KET) into the polymer matrix led to a nonlinear increase of water sorption in the membrane. The modification in sorption was accompanied by a nonlinear behavior in membrane surface energies. Infrared analysis revealed a different availability and accessibility of free polar groups supporting the formation of hydrogen bonding as a function of modifier concentration. A combination of both experimental and theoretical procedures was used to analyze the molecular processes of water sorption on PEBAX membranes. Molecular dynamics (MD) and quantum chemical (QC) calculations demonstrated that the formation of KET-KET dimers in the polymeric matrix led to a decrease in the interaction energy between water and modifiers. In addition, no variations in the dipole moments of water-dimer structures were found in comparison to a single KET and water-KET molecule. The formation of water-dimer complexes at higher concentration of modifier decreases the number of the dipole moment, thus preventing the polarization of polymer chains.
