Optic neuritis (ON) may be associated to a range of autoimmune or infectious diseases. We report herein a case of ON induced by Rickettsia conorii. A 53-year-old woman presented with a recent decrease in visual acuity and headache. ON was diagnosed on the basis of ophthalmologic examination and flash visual evoked potentials. Etiological investigation made in our department eliminated first autoimmune disorders (vasculitis and connective tissue diseases). Rickettsial optic neuritis was confirmed by detection of specific antibodies in serum and the negativity of other serologic tests. An association between corticosteroids and cyclines was prescribed with improvement of visual acuity.

Many different kind of fluids in a wide variety of industries exist, such as two-phase and three-phase. Various combinations of them can be expected and gas-oil-water is one of the most common flows. Measuring the volume fraction of phases without separation is vital in many aspects, one of which is financial issues. Many methods are utilized to ascertain the volumetric proportion of each phase. Sensors based on measuring capacity are so popular because this kind of sensor operates seamlessly and autonomously without necessitating any form of segregation or disruption for measuring in the process. Besides, at the present moment, Artificial intelligence (AI) can be nominated as the most useful tool in several fields, and metering is no exception. Also, three main type of regimes can be found which are annular, stratified, and homogeneous. In this paper, volume fractions in a gas-oil-water three-phase homogeneous regime are measured. To accomplish this objective, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and a capacitance-based sensor are utilized. To train the presented network, an optimized sensor was implemented in the COMSOL Multiphysics software and after doing a lot of simulations, 231 different data are produced. Among all obtained results, 70 percent of them (161 data) are awarded to the train data, and the rest of them (70 data) are considered for the test data. This investigation proposes a new intelligent metering system based on the Multilayer Perceptron network (MLP) that can estimate a three-phase water-oil-gas fluid's water volume fraction precisely with a very low error. The obtained Mean Absolute Error (MAE) is equal to 1.66. This dedicates the presented predicting method's considerable accuracy. Moreover, this study was confined to homogeneous regime and cannot measure void fractions of other fluid types and this can be considered for future works. Two-phase fluids are widely utilized in some industries, such as petrochemical, oil, water, and so on. Each phase, liquid and gas, needs to be measured. The measuring of the void fraction is vital in many industries because there are many two-phase fluids with a wide variety of liquids. A number of methods exist for measuring the void fraction, and the most popular is capacitance-based sensors. Aside from being easy to use, the capacitance-based sensor does not need any separation or interruption to measure the void fraction. In addition, in the contemporary era, thanks to Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), measurement methods have become much more accurate. The same can be said for capacitance-based sensors. In this paper, a new metering system utilizing an 8-electrode sensor and a Multilayer Perceptron network (MLP) is presented to predict an air and water volume fractions in a homogeneous fluid. Some characteristics, such as temperature, pressure, etc., can have an impact on the results obtained from the aforementioned sensor. Thus, considering temperature changes, the proposed network predicts the void fraction independent of pressure variations. All simulations were performed using the COMSOL Multiphysics software for temperature changes from 275 to 370 degrees Kelvin. In addition, a range of 1 to 500 Bars, was considered for the pressure. The proposed network has inputs obtained from the mentioned software, along with the temperature. The only output belongs to the predicted void fraction, which has a low MAE equal to 0.38. Thus, based on the obtained result, it can be said that the proposed network precisely measures the amount of the void fraction.

Arrhythmia is a dangerous disease in which the heart rhythm varies and it may be very fast or very slow. Rapid heartbeats can lead to shortness of breath, chest pain, and sudden weakness, whereas slow heartbeats can lead to dizziness, problems with concentration, and constant stress. Finding an effective treatment for arrhythmia has become a very important endeavor for researchers and clinicians. In this article, we review the latest methodologies used in arrhythmia diagnosis and treatment. They include the application of five different types of artificial neural networks trained by machine learning and powered by artificial intelligence: convolutional, recurrent, feedforward, radial basis function, and modular neural network. Some of these methodologies are merged to enhance accuracy and efficacy. This review suggests that more research needs to be carried out in merging neural network types for their application in electrocardiogram (ECG).

Methods for testing the presence of a virus in the blood are of interest to researchers and doctors because they determine how rapidly a virus is detected. In general, virus detection is a major scientific problem due to the serious effects of viruses on the human body. At present, only one virus can be detected in a single test. This potentially costs the medical establishment more time and money that could be saved if blood testing was more efficient. This study presents a qualitative method to enable doctors and researchers to detect more than one virus simultaneously. This was performed using quartz nanoparticles. Using polymer thin films of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), each chip emits a different frequency for each specific type of virus on the chip. The multiplicity of these chips allows for the detection of a number of viruses with the same number of nanoscale chips simultaneously. Blood flow around quartz nanoparticles was modelled. In this model, several conventional Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) with nanostructures (Nano-QCM) particles are inserted into the three main types of blood vessels. The results showed that the best location for the Nano-QCM is the large artery and that it is possible to test for a number of viruses in all types of blood vessels.

Intravenous delivery is the fastest conventional method of delivering drugs to their targets in seconds, whereas intramuscular and subcutaneous injections provide a slower continuous delivery of drugs. In recent years, nanoparticle-based drug-delivery systems have gained considerable attention. During the progression of nanoparticles into the blood, the sound waves generated by the particles create acoustic pressure that affects the movement of nanoparticles. To overcome this issue, the impact of sound pressure levels on the development of nanoparticles was studied herein. In addition, a composite nanostructure was developed using different types of nanoscale substances to overcome the effect of sound pressure levels in the drug-delivery process. The results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed nanostructure based on a group of different nanoparticles. This study suggests five materials, namely, polyimide, acrylic plastic, Aluminum 3003-H18, Magnesium AZ31B, and polysilicon for the design of the proposed structure. The best results were obtained in the case of the movement of these molecules at lower frequencies. The performance of acrylic plastic is better than other materials; the sound pressure levels reached minimum values at frequencies of 1, 10, 20, and 60 nHz. Furthermore, an experimental setup was designed to validate the proposed idea using advanced biomedical imaging technologies. The experimental results demonstrate the possibilities of detecting, tracking, and evaluating the movement behaviors of nanoparticles. The experimental results also demonstrate that the lowest sound pressure levels were observed at lower frequency levels, thus proving the validity of the proposed computational model assumptions. The outcome of this study will pave the way to understand the interaction behaviors of nanoparticles with the surrounding biological environments, including the sound pressure effect, which could lead to the useof such an effect in facilitating directional and tactic movements of the micro- and nano-motors., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest regarding the publication of this paper.

Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP) is a small-vessel vasculitis secondary to IgA deposits. We conducted a retrospective study of 14 cases of HSP in adults based on EULAR/PRINTO/PRES classification criteria for HSP over a period of 18 years (1996 to 2014) in Department of Internal Medicine at the Hedi Chaker University Hospital, Sfax, South Tunisia. The purpose of our study was to highlight the epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic and evolutionary features of HSP in our adult patients. The average age of patients was 33 years (ranging from 17-64 years) with male predominance (sex ratio of 1.8). Vascular purpura with petechiae was constant. Articular manifestations (arthralgia and/or arthritis) were reported in 9 patients (64.2%). Gastrointestinal involvement was reported in 13 patients (92.8%). Renal failure was found in 11 patients (78.5%) revealed by nephrotic proteinuria in 7 cases, microscopic haematuria in 9 cases, high blood pressure in 4 cases and renal impairment in 1 case. The most common histological type was diffuse proliferative endocapillary glomerulonephritis (36.3%). High dose corticotherapy was initiated in 7 patients with proliferative renal impairment, bolus of Solu-Medrol in 4 cases, associated with cyclophosphamide in one case. Two patients with severe gastrointestinal involvement received corticotherapy. Compound nanoparticle drug delivery system plays an important role in the interaction with lymph nodes. There are three primary types of lymphocytes: B cells, T cells, and natural killer cells. When the cells of the immune system turn carcinogenic, they assault body cells. The lymph fluid plays an important role in attacking healthy cells of the body; hence, this paper aimed to design a drug delivery system, which can efficiently direct nanoparticles to target the infected cells, helping in high-speed elimination of such cells. The proposed design depends on the interaction between these molecules, and the intelligent nano-controller has the ability to guide the nanoparticles by anaerobic contact. The proposed design proved that the smaller the nanoparticle size and density, the less dynamic viscosity of the liquid would be, which would reflect its resistance to flow. In addition, it was concluded that hydrogen molecules play a significant role in reducing lymphatic fluid resistance due to their low density.

A 48 years-old-woman was admitted for anectric cholestasis. A history of recurrent personal and familial epistaxis was noted. Biologic findings revealed iron deficiency anemia and moderate cholestasis. Viral serologic tests, antimitochondrie and anti smooth muscle antibodies were negative. Abdominal tomography showed multiple arterio-venous shunts of the liver. The diagnosis of liver involvement due to Rendu Osler disease was made. Current treatments for African trypanosomiasis are either toxic, costly, difficult to administer, or prone to elicit resistance. This study evaluated the activity of bisnaphthalimidopropyl (BNIP) derivatives againstTrypanosoma brucei BNIPDiaminobutane (BNIPDabut), the most active of these compounds, showedin vitroinhibition in the single-unit nanomolar range, similar to the activity in the reference drug pentamidine, and presented low toxicity and adequate metabolic stability. Additionally, using a murine model of acute infection and live imaging, a significant decrease in parasite load in BNIPDabut-treated mice was observed. However, cure was not achieved. To improve rabies vaccine production by Vero cells, we have developed a strategy based on high cell density culture and optimization of virus yield. We have first optimized cell growth in spinner flask using a Taguchi's L8 experimental design. We analyzed the effects of the following factors: initial glucose and glutamine concentrations, Cytodex 1 concentration and the regulation of glucose level at 1 g l(-1). We have also investigated the effect of the following factor interactions: Cytodex 1 concentration/glutamine concentration, Cytodex 1 concentration/glucose concentration and glucose concentration/glutamine concentration. Statistical analysis of the collected data pointed to the initial glucose concentration, the regulation of glucose level at 1 g l(-1) and the interactions between Cytodex 1 concentration/initial glucose concentration and Cytodex 1 concentration/initial glutamine concentration as the parameters that affected cell growth. Using the optimal conditions determined earlier, we have studied Vero cell growth in a 7-l bioreactor and in batch culture, and obtained a cell density level equal to 3.6 +/- 0.2 x 10(6) cells ml-1. Cell infection with rabies virus (LP 2061/Vero strain) at a multiplicity of infection (MOI) of 0.3 using M199 medium supplemented with 0.2% bovine serum albumin (BSA), yielded a maximal virus titer equal to 8 +/- 1.6 x 10(7) Fluorescent Focus Units (FFU) ml-1. We have also studied Vero cell growth in a 7-l bioreactor using recirculation as a perfusion culture mode during cell proliferation step and perfusion for virus multiplication phase. In comparison to batch culture, we reached a higher cell density level that was equal to 10.1 +/- 0.5 x 10(6) cells ml-1. Cell infection under the conditions previously indicated, yielded 14l of virus harvest that had a virus titer equal to 2.6 +/- 0.5 x 10(7) FFU ml-1. The activity of the inactivated virus harvest showed a protective activity that meets WHO requirements.

We studied BHK-21 cells growth in a 2-l bioreactor and investigated the effects of microcarrier concentration, type of growth medium, culture mode and serum concentration. The highest cell density reached was equal to 4x10(6) cells/ml and was achieved in minimum essential medium supplemented with Hanks' salts, non-essential amino acids and 5% fetal calf serum, using a perfusion culture mode and a microcarrier concentration of 4 g Cytodex 3/l. We studied rabies virus production (PV/BHK-21 strain) by BHK-21 cells grown at the optimal conditions determined previously. We analyzed the effects of multiplicity of infection (MOI) and type of medium used for virus multiplication in spinner-flasks and showed that the highest virus titer reached (when the cells were infected at a MOI of 0.3) in M199 medium supplemented with 0.2% of bovine serum albumin was equal to 8.2x10(7) Fluorescent Focus Units (FFU)/ml. When we grew the cells in a 2-l perfused bioreactor, we obtained a maximal virus titer of 3x10(8) FFU/ml. In addition, we scaled-up to a 20-l bioreactor and obtained similar results for cell density and virus titer. The experimental vaccine we developed meets WHO requirements for vaccine potency. Each run yielded about 40,000 doses of potent vaccine.
