Abstract

To investigate exotic cluster structures in neutron-rich nuclei via break-up reactions on a light target, the CLIR experiment was performed at INFN - Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS). To this aim, a Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) was produced, by means of the FRIBs@LNS facility, exploiting the In-Flight fragmentation technique: in this way, the obtained beam contains several radioactive ions of interest, such as 6He, 7,8,9Li, 11,12Be, 13,14,15B, 17C, and even the 16C and 10Be isotopes, for which cluster structures have already been studied at LNS. The isotopes of the cocktail beam were identified by means of the ΔE-ToF method, and afterward break-up reactions were triggered by sending them on a (CH2)n polyethylene (protons) target; the reaction fragments were detected by the high-granularity femtoscope array FARCOS coupled with the CHIMERA 4π multidetector. In this paper an overview of the status of the experiment will be given, and in particular the calibration procedures developed for the tagging detector and for the FARCOS array will be described.

Abstract

Background: Exposure to hypothermia is somehow unavoidable when a baby comes to life. This is the reason why any possible effort should be made by every caregiver involved during birth, from labour to transfer into the maternity ward, to reduce it. Hypothermia has widely shown to be related to several neonatal problems, and the risks are more relevant when the babies are born prematurely. Method: An observational study was conducted in April 2016 to assess the current practises to avoid hypothermia at birth in 20 Italian neonatal units. Each unit introduced local improvements in clinical practice and the same observational study was repeated 1 year later. Results: A total of 4722 babies were analysed. An overall increase in adherence to local and international recommendations emerged from our study. Significant differences between 2016 and 2017 were found in regard to neonatal temperature at nursery entry (36.3 °C vs 36.5 °C, respectively, p < 0.0001), delayed cord clamping practice > 60′′ (48.1% vs 68.1%, respectively, p < 0.0001) and skin-to-skin practice > 60′ (56.3% vs 60.9, respectively, p = 0.03). Statistical correlations with the risk of hypothermia were found for delivery room (OR 0.88 (CI 95%0.83-0.94), p < 0.0001) and maternal temperature (OR 0.57 (CI 95% 0.48-0.67), p < 0.0001). Conclusion: Periodical assessment of the delivery room practice has shown to be effective in improving adherence to the international recommendations. Relationship between neonatal hypothermia and several other variables including the delivery room and mother temperature underlines how neonatal thermoregulation starts immediately after birth. Hence, a multi-disciplinary approach is needed to provide the optimal environment for a safe birth.

Abstract

Experimental data concerning isospin transport phenomena for the systems Kr80+Ca40,48 at 35 MeV/nucleon are presented. Data have been collected with four FAZIA blocks; this data set is the same analyzed in S. Piantelli, Phys. Rev. C 101, 034613 (2020)2469-998510.1103/PhysRevC.101.034613. The isotopic composition of the QuasiProjectile residue (up to Z around 25) and of its decay products in the two reactions are compared, finding a neutron enrichment when the target is Ca48. The isotopic composition of the emitted light charged particles (LCP) and intermediate mass fragments (IMF) was also investigated in different windows of velocity. The obtained results have been compared with the prediction of the transport model AMD followed by the statistical code GEMINI (used as an afterburner), with different recipes for the density dependence of the symmetry energy term in the nuclear equation of state. A weak indication in favor of a stiff symmetry energy emerges when the fragments emitted at midvelocity are examined.

Abstract

We present results of barrier distribution measurements for Mg24+Zr90,92 systems by the backscattering method. The measurements were done at near-barrier beam energies of 68-88.5 MeV (in the laboratory frame) at six angles. A strong discrepancy between experimental results and the predictions of the standard coupled channels calculations was observed. To test the hypothesis that this discrepancy may be due to partial energy dissipation caused by coupling to many target noncollective levels, we performed calculations using the coupled channels plus random matrix theory (CC+RMT) model. The comparison of calculations with experimental results gives qualitative support of the hypothesis; however, quantitatively the agreement is not as good as in the case of the Ne20 projectile.

Abstract

Experimental results concerning the dynamical fission of quasiprojectiles in semiperipheral collisions for the system Kr80+Ca48 at 35 MeV/nucleon are presented. Data have been collected with four blocks of the FAZIA setup in the first physics experiment of the FAZIA Collaboration. The degree of isospin equilibration between the two fission fragments and its dependence on their charge asymmetry is investigated. The data are compared with the results of the AMD model coupled to GEMINI as an afterburner, in order to get hints about the timescale of the process.

Abstract

The excitation of the Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) in the 68Ni nucleus, above the neutron emission threshold, via an isoscalar probe has been observed for the first time. The excitation has been produced in reactions where a 68Ni beam, obtained by the fragmentation of a 70Zn primary beam at INFN-LNS, impinged on a 12C target. The γ-ray decay was detected using the CsI(Tl) detectors of the CHIMERA multidetector sphere. The 68Ni isotope as well as other heavy ion fragments were detected using the FARCOS array. The population of the PDR was evidenced by comparing the detected γ-ray energy spectra with statistical code calculations. The isotopic resolution of the detection system allows also to directly compare neutron decay channels with the 68Ni channel, better evidencing the PDR decay response function. This comparison allows also the extraction of the PDR cross section and the relative γ-ray angular distribution. The measured γ-ray angular distribution confirms the E1 character of the transition. The γ decay cross section for the excitation of the PDR was measured to be 0.32 mb with a 18% of statistical error. Keywords: Pygmy Dipole Resonance, Unstable nuclei, Isoscalar probe

Abstract

International audience; Experimental data concerning isospin transport phenomena for the systems Kr80+Ca40,48 at 35 MeV/nucleon are presented. Data have been collected with four FAZIA blocks; this data set is the same analyzed in S. Piantelli , Phys. Rev. C 101, 034613 (2020)2469-998510.1103/PhysRevC.101.034613. The isotopic composition of the QuasiProjectile residue (up to Z around 25) and of its decay products in the two reactions are compared, finding a neutron enrichment when the target is Ca48. The isotopic composition of the emitted light charged particles (LCP) and intermediate mass fragments (IMF) was also investigated in different windows of velocity. The obtained results have been compared with the prediction of the transport model AMD followed by the statistical code GEMINI (used as an afterburner), with different recipes for the density dependence of the symmetry energy term in the nuclear equation of state. A weak indication in favor of a stiff symmetry energy emerges when the fragments emitted at midvelocity are examined.

Abstract

International audience; Background: The γ decay of C12 levels above the particle emission threshold plays a crucial role in the production of C12 in astrophysical environments. The Hoyle state is fundamental in the helium-burning phase of red giant stars, while the 9.64-MeV level can be involved in higher temperature explosive environments.Purpose: The aim of this work was to explore the feasibility of measuring the γ-decay widths of the 9.64-MeV state. The experiments were performed at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud of INFN (INFN-LNS), in Catania, using α and proton beams impinging on a carbon target.Methods: The method used consists in the detection of all charged products and γ rays emitted in the reaction, in order to strongly reduce the background.Results: Few events of γ decay of the 9.64-MeV level were observed in the reaction α+C12. Also the decay yield of the Hoyle state was measured in both the measured reactions α+C12 and p+C12.Conclusions: The γ decay of the 9.64-MeV level is, inside error bars, in reasonable agreement with the yield recently reported in literature by measuring the C12 residue. The observed yield is larger than previously accepted lower limit. Also, the decay yield of the Hoyle state seems larger than the one reported in literature, even if the limited statistics do not allow a definite conclusion.
