A graphics processing unit implementation of the multilevel plane-wave time-domain algorithm for rapidly evaluating transient electromagnetic fields generated by large-scale dipole constellations is proposed. A survey of electromagnetic integral-equation solvers, implemented on graphics processing units (GPUs), is presented. Several key points for efficient GPU implementations of integral-equation solvers are outlined. Three spatial-interpolation-based algorithms, including the Nonuniform-Grid Interpolation Method (NGIM), the box Adaptive-Integral Method (B-AIM), and the fast periodic interpolation method (FPIM), are described to show the basic principles for optimizing GPU-accelerated fast integral-equation algorithms. It is shown that proper implementations of these algorithms lead to very high computational performance, with GPU-CPU speed-ups in the range of 100–300. Critical points for these accomplishments are (i) a proper arrangement of the data structure, (ii) an “on-the-fly” approach, trading excessive memory usage with increased arithmetic operations and data uniformity, and (iii) efficient utilization of the types of GPU memory. The presented methods and their GPU implementations are geared towards creating efficient electromagnetic integral-equation solvers. Hybrid spectral-spatial representations are introduced to rapidly calculate periodic scalar and dyadic Green's functions of the Helmholtz equation for 2D and 3D configurations with a 1D (linear) periodicity. The presented schemes work seamlessly for any observation location near the array and for any practical array periodicities, including electrically small and large periodicities. The representations are based on the expansion of the periodic Green's functions in terms of the continuous spectral integrals over the transverse (to the array) spectral parameters. To achieve high convergence and numerical efficiency, the introduced integral representations are cast in a hybrid form in terms of: (i) a small number of contributions due to sources located around the unit cell of interest; (ii) a small number of symmetric combinations of the Floquet modes; and (iii) an integral evaluated along the steepest descent path (SDP). The SDP integral is regularized by extracting the singular behavior near the saddle point of the integrand and integrating the extracted components in closed form. Efficient quadrature rules are established to evaluate this integral using a small number of quadrature nodes with arbitrary small error for a wide range of structure parameters. A dual-layer patterned element magnetic recording medium design is presented that is expected to satisfy areal densities at 10 Tb/in². Each element consists of a small high anisotropy initial layer on top of which is deposited on an exchange-coupled soft layer of approximately equal thickness that extends in the recording direction almost to an adjacent element. This design has two distinct advantages. Reversal by precessional switching will occur for realistic record head field rise times (100-200 ps). Thermal stability for such small elements is maintained by hard section anisotropy fields that are an order of magnitude larger than the reversal field. Chiral magnets are known to possess interesting electromagnetic properties that result from the coupling of electrons with nontrivial magnetic phases, such as particle-like magnetic spin textures termed skyrmions. So far, it is unclear how the local and global chirality of magnetic spin textures contributes to the electromagnetic transport responses that have so far been observed. In this work, we focus on unraveling the contributions in the field-dependent longitudinal resistivity response that arises from magnetic spin textures in a centrosymmetric Fe/Gd multilayer that exhibits an array of magnetic phases ranging from stripe, mixed stripe-skyrmion, skyrmion lattice, and disordered skyrmion. Using a combination of transport measurements and micromagnetic simulations, we demonstrate a domain wall chirality reconfiguration occurs as the domain morphology transitions from disordered stripe to skyrmion lattice phase under applied fields that is responsible for the interesting transport responses noted in the field-dependent longitudinal resistivity. Chiral magnets are known to exhibit interesting electromagnetic properties that result from the coupling of electrons with nontrivial magnetic spin textures. An efficient micromagnetic solver running on graphics processing units (GPU) is demonstrated. The solver implements a nonuniform grid interpolation method (NGIM) to compute the superposition integral for the magnetostatic field with O (N) operations and memory requirements. The NGIM divides the computational domain into a hierarchy of boxes containing sources and observers, and it uses spatial interpolation from sparse nonuniform grids to achieve computational savings. Efficiency of the GPU solver is achieved by using coalesced memory accessing requiring arranging data in contiguous addresses, one-block-per-box computations with a block of threads handling an observation box to achieve the best utilization of the GPU threads, and on-fly computation of all grids and interpolation coefficients leading to reduced memory and increased speed. The GPU-CPU speed-ups are shown to be in the range 40-100 depending on the problem size and accuracy. A simple and inexpensive GPU is shown to handle efficiently problems comprising discretizations of more than 16 million of spins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetic reversal in exchange-coupled composite elements under microwave fields is characterized by several unique properties including reduced reversal fields, microwave fields, microwave resonant frequencies, and reduced sensitivity to anisotropy distributions as compared to homogeneous elements. We find that reversal can occur in uniform and nonuniform regimes. The uniform regime is characterized by coherent spin precession enhancement by the microwave field. In the nonuniform regime domain walls in the soft layer mediate reversal and under linearly polarized microwave fields, can lead to a formation of localized reversal/nonreversal areas in the “applied field-frequency” phase plane. We present an approach for minimizing the critical current for the magnetization switching in magnetic tunnel junctions by optimizing the spatial distribution of the current density. We show that such a minimization is possible because critical current is determined by the condition of making one of the magnetization eigenstates grow in time. The excitation of the eigenstates is enhanced when the spatial distributions of the eigenstates and current density overlap. Critical current can be viewed as a functional of the current density spatial distribution and it can be minimized by optimizing this distribution. Such an optimization results in a major reduction of the critical current and increase of the switching efficiency, viz. the ratio between the energy barrier and critical current. The minimized critical current increases approximately linearly with the magnetic tunnel junction size, which is much slower than critical current for the case of a uniform current density. The optimized efficiency can be approximately a constant with respect to the magnetic tunnel junction size, which is much higher than the efficiency for the uniform current density. Additional optimization can be achieved by spatially modulating the material parameters, e.g., the saturation magnetization. Abstract: This paper presents a parallel algorithm implemented on graphics processing units (GPUs) for rapidly evaluating spatial convolutions between the Helmholtz potential and a large-scale source distribution. The algorithm implements a non-uniform grid interpolation method (NGIM), which uses amplitude and phase compensation and spatial interpolation from a sparse grid to compute the field outside a source domain. NGIM reduces the computational time cost of the direct field evaluation at N observers due to N co-located sources from O(N 2) to O(N) in the static and low-frequency regimes, to O(N log N) in the high-frequency regime, and between these costs in the mixed-frequency regime. Memory requirements scale as O(N) in all frequency regimes. Several important differences between CPU and GPU implementations of the NGIM are required to result in optimal performance on respective platforms. In particular, in the CPU implementations all operations, where possible, are pre-computed and stored in memory in a preprocessing stage. This reduces the computational time but significantly increases the memory consumption. In the GPU implementations, where handling memory often is a critical bottle neck, several special memory handling techniques are used to accelerate the computations. A significant latency of the GPU global memory access is hidden by implementing coalesced reading, which requires arranging many array elements in contiguous parts of memory. Contrary to the CPU version, most of the steps in the GPU implementations are executed on-fly and only necessary arrays are kept in memory. This results in significantly reduced memory consumption, increased problem size N that can be handled, and reduced computational time on GPUs. The obtained GPU–CPU speed-up ratios are from 150 to 400 depending on the required accuracy and problem size. Abstract: A multilevel Cartesian non-uniform grid time domain algorithm (CNGTDA) is introduced to rapidly compute transient wave fields radiated by time dependent three-dimensional source constellations. CNGTDA leverages the observation that transient wave fields generated by temporally bandlimited and spatially confined source constellations can be recovered via interpolation from appropriately delay- and amplitude-compensated field samples. This property is used in conjunction with a multilevel scheme, in which the computational domain is hierarchically decomposed into subdomains with sparse non-uniform grids used to obtain the fields. For both surface and volumetric source distributions, the computational cost of CNGTDA to compute the transient field at N s observation locations from N s collocated sources for N t discrete time instances scales as O(N t N s logN s ) and O(N t N s log2 N s ) in the low- and high-frequency regimes, respectively. Coupled with marching-on-in-time (MOT) time domain integral equations, CNGTDA can facilitate efficient analysis of large scale time domain electromagnetic and acoustic problems. The code is capable of efficiently and accurately simulating magnetization dynamics in large and structurally complex granular systems, such as multilayer granular media used for perpendicular magnetic recording, bit patterned media, granular nanowires, and read heads. In these systems the granular microstructure and distributions in grain and interface properties play an important role in device performance. The presented Voronoi simulator allows comprehensive studies to be performed as it accounts for the detailed granular microstructure and distributions that characterize true systems. Nonlinear transition shift (NLTS) produced by the interaction between transitions is a major source of distortions in magnetic recording. NLTS must be reduced to realize higher density and maintain signal quality. However, there is some confusion about the production and behavior of NLTS in previous reports. In this paper, combined with micromagnetic simulation, we have developed a complete theoretical model to predict NLTS on perpendicular magnetic media. The results show that one-level NLTS (caused by one previous transition) will monotonically decrease as the present transition becomes further away from the previous one, and multilevel NLTS (caused by consecutive previous transitions) will firstly increase and quickly approach a constant value as there are more consecutive transitions.
