Stiffness anisotropy of oblique pillars for directed spreading of rat mesenchymal stem cells. • Oblique PLGA micropillars of different sizes and pitches were fabricated by hot embossing techniques. • RMSCs were cultured on the pillars showing strong anisotropic effects of spreading due to inclined individual pillars. • The experimental results were explained based on a theoretical modelling of effective stiffness of oblique pillar arrays. Stiffness and anisotropy of culture substrates are important factors influencing the cell behavior and their responses to external stimuli. Herein, we report a fabrication method of oblique polymer pillars which allow modulating both stiffness and anisotropy of the substrate for spreading and elongation studies of Rat Mesenchymal Stem Cells (RMSCs). Poly (Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid) (PLGA) has been chosen to produce micro-pillars of different heights and different pitches using a combined method of soft-lithography and hot embossing. The stiffness of such pillar substrates varies over a large range so that RMSCs show effectively different spreading behaviors which are also sensitive to the inclining angle of the pillars. Our results showed that with the increase of the pillar height the area of cell spreading decreases but the cell elongation aspect ratio increases. Moreover, cells preferentially elongate along the direction perpendicular to that of the pillars' inclining, which is in agreement with the calculated anisotropy of the pillar substrate stiffness. This paper presents a mathematical model of measuring blood flow based on electromagnetic induction for predicting the rate of arterial stenosis. Firstly, an electrode sensor was used to collect the induced potential differences from human skin surface in a uniform magnetic field. Then, the inversion matrix was constructed by the weight function theory and finite element method. Next, the blood flow volume inversion model was constructed by combining the induction potential differences and inversion matrix. Finally, the rate of arterial stenosis was predicted based on mathematical relationship between blood flow and the area of arterial stenosis. To verify the accuracy of the model, a uniform magnetic field distribution of Helmholtz coil and a 3D geometric model of the ulnar artery of the forearm with different rates of stenosis were established in COMSOL, a finite element analysis software. Simulation results showed that the inversion model had high accuracy in the measurement of blood flow and the prediction of rate of stenosis, and is of great significance for the early diagnosis of arterial stenosis and other vessel diseases. In this paper, we design an adaptive neural network (NN) controller of uncertain ${n}$ -joint robotic systems with time-varying state constraints. By proposing a nonlinear mapping, the robotic systems are transformed into the multiple-input, multiple-output systems. Compared with constant constraints, the time-varying state constraints are more general in the real systems. To overcome the design challenge, the time-varying barrier Lyapunov function is introduced to ensure that the states of the robotic systems are bounded within the predetermined time-varying range. The NN approximations are employed to approximate the uncertain parametric and unknown functions in the robotic systems. Based on the Lyapunov analysis, it can be proved that all signals of robotic systems are bounded; the tracking errors of system output converge on a small neighborhood of zero and the time-varying state constraints are never violated. Summary: This paper presents an adaptive fuzzy control approach of multiple‐input–multiple‐output (MIMO) switched uncertain systems, which involve time‐varying full state constraints (TFSCs) and unknown disturbances. In the design procedure, the fuzzy logic systems are adopted to approximate the unknown functions in the systems. The adaptive fuzzy controller is set up by backstepping technique. Background: First-line rehabilitative strategies to improve motor deficits are based on functional training (physical or occupational therapy), which has been demonstrated to facilitate neural reorganisation. Accumulating evidence suggests that non-invasive brain stimulation techniques, such as repetitive TMS (rTMS), may enhance neuroplasticity, thereby facilitating neural reorganisation and recovery from Parkinson's disease. Evidence also shows that intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) can improve motor function and quality of life in patients by promoting the excitability and neural remodelling of cerebral cortex. We aimed to combine iTBS stimulation with physiotherapy to improve the rehabilitation effect compared to physiotherapy alone in patients with Parkinson's disease. Methods: This randomised, double-blind clinical trial will enrol 50 Parkinson's disease patients aged 45–70 years with Hoehn and Yahr scale scores of 1–3. Patients are randomly assigned to either the iTBS + physiotherapy or sham-iTBS + physiotherapy group. The trial consists of a 2-week double-blind treatment period and a 24-week follow-up period. iTBS and sham-iTBS will be administered twice daily for 10 days based on physiotherapy. The primary outcome will be the third part of Movement Disorders–Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS III) from the baseline to the first 2 days following completion hospitalised intervention. The secondary outcome will be 39-item Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) at 4 weeks, 12 weeks and 24 weeks after intervention. Tertiary outcomes are clinical evaluations and mechanism study outcomes such as NMSS, 6MWD, 10MT, TUG, BBS, MRI, and EEG, the length of time between the drug needs to be adjusted when symptoms fluctuate. Discussion: The aim of this study is to demonstrate that iTBS can promote overall function and quality of life in Parkinson's disease patients using physiotherapy and that this efficacy may be associated with altered neuroplasticity in exercise-related brain regions. The iTBS combined with physiotherapy training model will be evaluated during a 6-month follow-up period. With significant improvement in quality of life and motor function, iTBS combined with physiotherapy can be considered as a first-line rehabilitation option for Parkinson's disease. The potential of iTBS to enhance neuroplasticity in the brain should have a more positive impact in increasing the generality and efficiency of physiotherapy, improving the quality of life and overall functional status of patients with Parkinson's disease. Dielectric polymer-based composites have demonstrated enormous promise in the applications of electrostatic film capacitors due to their exceptional insulating characteristics. However, the achievement of great energy-storage density (U e) is always difficult in linear dielectric polymer-based composites for operation at weak field strength due to the low permittivity (ϵ r) and electric displacement difference (D max − D rem) values. Here, a tri-layered configuration of multicomponent polymeric films is proposed. The outer layers of the tri-layered composite are linear dielectric polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and the inner layer is a nonlinear polymer incorporating a low number of polydopamine-modified barium titanate particles (BT@PDA). An increased ϵ r of 8.9@1 kHz is achieved in the designed composite featuring only 2 wt% BT@PDA fillers, equivalent to 234% of the PMMA (∼3.8@1 kHz) matrix. An improved U e of 9.3 J cm−3 at 340 MV m−1 is endowed in the designed film, implying an enormous ∼343% increment of the energy storage compared to the benchmark biaxially oriented polypropylene (∼2.1 J cm−3 at 300 MV m−1). All these advantages present a practical strategy for supplying linear dielectric polymer-based composites with anticipative capacitive energy-storage properties for operation at weak field strengths. Subwavelength‐structured metasurfaces working in visible and near‐infrared bands present a high challenge in large‐scale device fabrication. In this study, a scalable, high‐efficient, and low‐cost laser‐induced nanopatterning technique is exploited to fabricate a kind of short‐range disordered metagratings, which enables broadband polarization‐independent absorption in the visible to near‐infrared wavelength. The short‐range disorder of the laser‐induced nanogratings originates from the laser‐induced thermal effect and can be spontaneously organized during laser nanopatterning. The unique disorder can break the unidirectional characteristics of the nanogratings, which empowers the metagratings to excite coupled resonance modes. This helps to achieve near‐perfect absorption in the visible to near‐infrared band (400–1100 nm) with an excellent angular tolerance (up to 60°) and average absorptivities of 96.3% and 93.5% under the TM and TE modes, respectively. This paper addresses formation control with obstacle avoidance problem for a class of second-order stochastic nonlinear multiagent systems under directed topology. Different with deterministic multiagent systems, stochastic cases are more practical and challenging because the exogenous disturbances depicted by the Wiener process are considered. In order to achieve control objective, both the leader-follower formation approach and the artificial potential field (APF) method are combined together, where the artificial potential is utilized to solve obstacle avoidance problem. For obtaining good system robustness to the undesired side effects of the artificial potential, $H_\infty$ analysis is implemented. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory, it is proven that control objective can be achieved, of which obstacle avoidance is proven by finding an energy function satisfying that its time derivative is positive. Glutaredoxins play crucial roles in maintaining intracellular redox homeostasis via scavenging of excess reactive oxygen species. In this study, a glutaredoxin domain-containing cysteine-rich gene from Helicoverpa armigera , named HaGdccr , was characterized. Sequence analysis revealed that it contains a glutaredoxin domain and a conserved cysteine and shares high sequence identity with other insect genes. HaGdccr mRNA expression was highest in molting larvae of the 3rd instar and was mainly detected in the central nervous system of larvae and the wings of adults. Quantitative real-time PCR results revealed that the expression of HaGdccr was suppressed at 1 and 6 h and increased at 24 h after the larvae were treated with 4 °C and hydrogen peroxide. When the larvae were exposed to 20 °C, HaGdccr decreased at 1 h and was induced at 12 and 24 h. HaGdccr transcription level was downregulated at 2 and 12 h and upregulated at 24 h after the adults were exposed to 0 °C. However, transcript levels were increased by high temperature in both larvae and adults. After knockdown of HaGdccr by RNA interference, the expression of antioxidant genes, including thioredoxin-like ( Trx-like ), catalase ( CAT ), glutathione-S-transferase ( GST ), thioredoxin reductase ( TrxR ), and thioredoxin ( Trx ), was increased, whereas that of thioredoxin peroxidase ( Tpx ) was decreased. In addition, we found that HaGdccr knockdown enhanced the enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase and the contents of hydrogen peroxide and ascorbate. In this paper, an adaptive neural network (NN)-based tracking control algorithm is proposed for the wheeled mobile robotic (WMR) system with full state constraints. It is the first time to design an adaptive NN-based control algorithm for the dynamic WMR system with full state constraints. The constraints come from the limitations of the wheels’ forward speed and steering angular velocity, which depends on the motors’ driving performance. By employing adaptive NNs and a barrier Lyapunov function with error variables, then, the unknown functions in the systems are estimated, and the constraints are not violated. Based on the assumptions and lemmas given in this paper and the references, while the design and the system parameters chose properly, our proposed scheme can guarantee the uniform ultimate boundedness for all signals in the WMR system, and the tracking error converge to a bounded compact set to zero. It has been recognized that both the ligand fields and intermolecular interactions may greatly impact the electron-transfer-coupled spin transition (ETCST) events in switchable magnetic materials; however, the engineering of these factors within a given system is still challenging. In this article, we chose the 4,4′-substituent 2,2′-bipyridine derivatives as chelating ligands according to their increasing electron-donating strength and incremental potential for forming hydrogen bonds (bpyCHO,CH3(L1) < bpyCH2OH,CH3 (L2) < bpyCH2OH,CH2OH (L3)), and prepared three new [Fe2Co2] complexes, {[(Tp*)Fe(CN)3Co(L)2]2[ClO4]2}·Sol (1, L = L1, Sol = 4MeCN·2H2O; 2, L = L2, Sol = 3MeCN; 3, L = L3, Sol = 4MeOH; Tp* = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate). X-ray crystallography studies revealed that all the complexes share similar cyanide-bridged [Fe2Co2] square compositions except for the different substituted groups of L ligands, which led to the clearly evidenced intercluster hydrogen bonds between the neighbouring hydroxyl groups in 2 and 3. As a result, 1 remained in the paramagnetic [Fe III,LS2 Co II,HS2 ] state over the whole temperature range, while 2 and 3 showed complete ETCST behaviour with the transition temperatures (T1/2) being 221 and 294 K, respectively. Introduction: The basis of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is the reconstruction of periodontal tissue under stress. Increasing the speed of OTM has always been the focus of attention. Objectives: Periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) are direct effector cells of mechanical force, but the mechanism by which PDLSCs sense mechanical stimuli is unclear. Methods: Human PDLSCs (hPDLSCs) were analyzed in the presence or absence of force loading with the Flexcell loading system in vitro. Then, periodontal tissues were analyzed after mechanical stimulation in vivo. In addition, cells in a confined microenvironment were analyzed to observe changes in the cytoskeleton and migration. Finally, TRPC6−/− mice were used to further verify the effect of TRPC6. After force application, the OTM distance, bone marrow density (BMD), TRPC6 and COL1 expression, and TRAP staining were evaluated in periodontal tissues. Results: RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and western blot analyses revealed that TRPC6 was important during mechanical force application to hPDLSCs. Appropriate mechanical force application also induced TRPC6 activation in the OTM model and the confined microenvironment. Under a slightly confined microenvironment, treatment with the TRPC6 inhibitor SKF96365 and TRPC6 knockout decreased the migration speed of hPDLSCs and mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (mBMSCs). In addition, TRPC6−/− mice showed lower OTM distances and reduced osteogenic and osteoclastic differentiation. Conclusion: In summary, TRPC6 activation in PDLSCs mediated by appropriate mechanical force application contributes to periodontal tissue reconstruction. PDLSCs modulate periodontal tissue remodeling under appropriate mechanical stimulation through TRPC6; however, under excessive stress, alveolar bone and tooth roots are readily absorbed. A reliable, efficient, and simple control is presented and validated for a quarter-car active suspension system equipped with an electro-hydraulic actuator. Unlike the existing techniques, this control does not use any function approximation, e.g., neural networks (NNs) or fuzzy-logic systems (FLSs), while the unmolded dynamics, including the hydraulic actuator behavior, can be accommodated effectively. Hence, the heavy computational costs and tedious parameter tuning phase can be remedied. Moreover, both the transient and steady-state suspension performance can be retained by incorporating prescribed performance functions (PPFs) into the control implementation. This guaranteed performance is particularly useful for guaranteeing the safe operation of suspension systems. Apart from theoretical studies, some practical considerations of control implementation and several parameter tuning guidelines are suggested. Experimental results based on a practical quarter-car active suspension test-rig demonstrate that this control can obtain a superior performance and has better computational efficiency over several other control methods. The dissymmetry factor (|glum|) in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) shows great significance in many potential applications. The development of upconversion circularly polarized luminescence (UC‐CPL) with a large dissymmetry factor is still limited by structural defects, especially in a self‐assembly system. Here, a self‐organized cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) composite is demonstrated, induced by uniaxially aligned upconversion nanorods (UCNRs) film, overcoming the aggregation issue via direct doping. The well‐aligned UCNR film serves as a polarized emitter, and the cholesteric superhelixstructure enables the conversion from polarized upconversion luminescence (UCL) to a completely UC‐CPL with an ultrahigh |glum| value up to 1.92. Upon changing the concentration of chiral dopants or heating, the chiral UCL can be conveniently modulated via shifting the CLC reflection band to overlap with the UCL band. Moreover, UC‐CPL with bidirectional asymmetric polarizations and emissions is achieved via forward and backward excitations. Furthermore, reversible switching from circular to linear polarization of UCL can be achieved by applying an electric field. Such a composite material system features versatile multimode and multiband modulation of UC‐CPL with the significantly enhanced dissymmetry factor and multichannel modulation, providing new opportunities for advanced applications in photonics and biological optoelectronics. In this paper, Ag@FeO@cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) nanocomposites were synthesized by a facile and green microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. In the procedure, CNC was used as a reducing agent for the synthesis of Ag. During the whole synthesis process, there were no additional reducing agents or toxic solvents used. The nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential thermal analysis. In addition, Ag@FeO@CNC nanocomposites were also synthesized by microwave-assisted method and hydrothermal method. Both the effects of reaction time and synthetic procedures on the reduction process of Ag by CNC were explored. The results showed that FeO was formed with sphere-like structure and dispersed uniformly. Ag@FeO@CNC nanocomposites exhibited good adsorption of dye solution, which showed potential applications in water treatment. The antibacterial results showed that Ag@ FeO@CNC nanocomposites had good antibacterial activities toward both Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli). The green and facile strategy reported in this paper may be broadly used in synthesizing other metal nanoparticles, as well as organic-inorganic nanocomposites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is concerned with the problem of fuzzy tracking adaptive control for a class of discrete-time switched uncertain nonlinear systems with arbitrary switching. Based on the common Lyapunov function method and by utilizing the fuzzy logic systems to approximate the unknown nonlinear functions, an adaptive fuzzy controller is firstly constructed for a class of uncertain nonlinear discrete-time switched systems. Meanwhile, the proposed adaptive control algorithm reduces the amount of online adjustable parameters. Based on the above techniques, the constructed fuzzy controllers and the adaptive law can guarantee that all the signals are bounded and the system output can converge to a small neighborhood of the reference signal in the closed-loop system. [Display omitted] Although certain members of the Ubiquitin-specific peptidases (USPs) have been recognized as promising therapeutic targets for various diseases, research progress regarding USP21 has been relatively sluggish in its early stages. USP21 is a crucial member of the USPs subfamily, involved in diverse cellular processes such as apoptosis, DNA repair, and signal transduction. Research findings from the past decade demonstrate that USP21 mediates the deubiquitination of multiple well-known target proteins associated with critical cellular processes relevant to both disease and homeostasis, particularly in various cancers. This review comprehensively summarizes the structure and biological functions of USP21 with an emphasis on its role in tumorigenesis, and elucidates the advances on the discovery of tens of small-molecule inhibitors targeting USP21, which suggests that targeting USP21 may represent a potential strategy for cancer therapy. The first systematic acylated diversification of naturally scarce premyrsinane diterpenes, together with their biosynthetic precursors lathyrane diterpene were carried out. Two new series of premyrsinane derivates (1a - 32a) and lathyrane derivates (1 – 32) were synthesized from the naturally abundant lathyrane diterpene Euphorbia factor L 3 through a bioinspired approach. The cholinesterase inhibitory and neuroprotective activities of these diterpenes were investigated to explore potential anti-Alzheimer's disease (AD) bioactive lead compounds. In general, the lathyrane diterpenes showed the better acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity than that of premyrsinanes. The lathyrane derivative 17 bearing a 3-dimethylaminobenzoyl moiety showed the best AChE inhibition effect with the IC 50 value of 7.1 μM. Molecular docking demonstrated that 17 could bond with AChE well (−8 kal/mol). On the other hand, premyrsinanes showed a better neuroprotection profile against H 2 O 2 -induced injury in SH-SY5Y cells. Among them, the premyrsinane diterpene 16a had significant neuroprotective effect with the cell viability rate of 113.5 % at 12.5 μM (the model group with 51.2 %). The immunofluorescence, western blot and reactive oxygen species (ROS) analysis were conducted to demonstrate the mechanism of 16a. Chinese chives is a popular herb vegetable and medicine in Asian countries. Southwest China is one of the centers of origin, and the mountainous areas in this region are rich in wild germplasm. In this study, we collected four samples of germplasm from different altitudes: a land race of cultivated Chinese chives (Allium tuberosum), wide-leaf chives and extra-wide-leaf chives (Allium hookeri), and ovoid-leaf chives (Allium funckiaefolium). Leaf metabolites were detected and compared between A. tuberosum and A. hookeri. A total of 158 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAM) were identified by Gas Chromatography—Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Liquid Chromatography—Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), among which there was a wide range of garlic odor compounds, free amino acids, and sugars. A. hookeri contains a higher content of fructose, garlic odor compounds, and amino acids than A. tuberosum, which is supported by the higher expression level of biosynthetic genes revealed by transcriptome analysis. A. hookeri accumulates the same garlic odor compound precursors that A. tuberosum does (mainly methiin and alliin). We isolated full-length gene sequences of phytochelatin synthase (PCS), γ-glutamyltranspeptidases (GGT), flavin-containing monooxygenase (FMO), and alliinase (ALN). These sequences showed closer relations in phylogenetic analysis between A. hookeri and A. tuberosum (with sequence identities ranging from 86% to 90%) than with Allium cepa or Allium sativum (which had a lower sequence identity ranging from 76% to 88%). Among these assayed genes, ALN, the critical gene controlling the conversion of odorless precursors into odor compounds, was undetected in leaves, bulbs, and roots of A. tuberosum, which could account for its weaker garlic smell. Moreover, we identified a distinct FMO1 gene in extra-wide-leaf A. hookeri that is due to a CDS-deletion and frameshift mutation. Background: Diplozoidae are monogenean (Monogenea: Polyopisthocotylea) fish parasites characterised by a unique life history: two larvae permanently fuse into an X-shaped "Siamese" organism. Taxonomy and phylogeny of Diplozoidae and Polyopisthocotylea remain unresolved due to the unavailability of molecular markers with sufficiently high resolution. Mitogenomes may be a suitable candidate, but there are currently only 12 available for the Polyopisthocotylea (three for Diplozoidae). The only available study of diplozoid mitogenomes found unique base composition patterns and elevated evolution rates in comparison with other Monogenean mitogenomes. Methods: To further explore their evolution and generate molecular data for evolutionary studies, we sequenced the complete mitogenomes of two Diplozoidae species, Paradiplozoon homoion and Paradiplozoon yarkandense, and conducted a number of comparative mitogenomic analyses with other polyopisthocotyleans. Results: We found further evidence that mitogenomes of Diplozoidae evolve at a unique, elevated rate, which was reflected in their exceptionally long branches, large sizes, unique base composition, skews, and very low gene sequence similarity levels between the two newly sequenced species. They also exhibited remarkably large overlaps between some genes. Phylogenetic analysis of Polyopisthocotylea resolved all major taxa as monophyletic, and Mazocraeidea was split into two major clades: (Diplozoidae) + (all four remaining families: Diclidophoridae, Chauhaneidae, Mazocraeidae and Microcotylidae). It also provided further confirmation that the genus Paradiplozoon is paraphyletic and requires a taxonomic revision, so the two species may have to be renamed Indodiplozoon homoion and Diplozoon yarkandense comb. nov. Conclusions: Although our findings indicate that mitogenomes may be a promising tool for resolving the phylogeny of Polyopisthocotylea, elevated evolutionary rates of Diplozoidae may cause phylogenetic artefacts, so future studies should pay caution to this problem. In order to improve the active safety driving vehicle and alleviate the intension of driving fatigue, an intelligent control strategy of automobile cruise is put forward based on the throttle or braking pedal combined control adopting the fuzzy control theory. A fuzzy logic controller is presented, which consists of the two input variables, the deviation of the theoretical safe distance and relative distance and the relative velocity between the preceding vehicle and the cruise vehicle, and the single output variable, that is, the throttle opening or the braking pedal travel. Taking the test data of 1.6 L vehicle with auto-transmission as an example, the function on the intelligent cruise control system is simulated adopting MATLAB/Simulink aiming at different working conditions on the city road. The simulation results show that the control strategy possesses integrated capability of automated Stop & Go control, actively following the preceding vehicle on the conditions of keeping the safety distance and the constant velocity cruise. Background Vascular hyporeactivity in severe hemorrhagic shock could induce refractory hypotension and is an important cause of death. The global acute inflammatory response induced in shock triggers the over-expression of reactive oxygen species, NO, ET1 and TNF-α, which play essential roles in the pathology of vascular hyporeactivity. This leads to a hypothesis that inhibition of the complement system, the mediator of the inflammatory cascade, might be a promising therapeutic exploration for vascular hyporeactivity. Methods We use cobra venom factor (CVF) and the soluble form of CR1 (sCR1) which deplete or inhibit complement C3 respectively to examine its role in vascular hyporeactivity in a conscious hemorrhagic shock rat model. Results We first confirmed the over-activation of C3 during shock and the down-regulation effects of CVF and sCR1 on C3. Then, both CVF and sCR1 could significantly mitigate the over-expression of serum NO, ET-1, TNF-α and reactive oxygen species. Finally, the vascular reactivity of superior mesenteric arteries (SMA) was examined in vitro, which confirmed the massive reduction of vascular reactivity in shock, which was significantly rescued by both CVF and sCR1. Conclusions Inhibition of C3 might improve the reactivity of SMA to norepinephrine during hemorrhagic shock possibly through the downregulation of NO, ET1, TNF-α and reactive oxygen radicals. Accurate control of etching depth is achieved via cross-section investigation under a scanning electron microscope. Colorful surfaces are observed with varying geometries. In this paper, an adaptive neural network tracking control is studied for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems. The studied systems are in discrete-time form and unknown time-delay is considered here. Up to now, the research works on nonlinear discrete-time main focus on systems without time-delay, so the problem of the unknown time-delay will be solved in this paper. Based on the Lipschitz or norm-boundedness assumption of the unknown nonlinearities, the mean-value theorem is utilized to solve the unknown time-delay problem. In order to overcome the noncausal problem, the strict-feedback systems will be transformed into a special form. The radial basis functions neural networks (RBFNN) are utilized to approximate the unknown functions of the systems, the adaptation laws and the controllers are designed based on the transformed systems. By using the Lyapunov analysis, it is proven that the closed-loop system is stable in the sense that semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB) and the output tracking errors converge to a bounded compact set. In this study, a novel adaptive neural network (NN)‐based leader‐following consensus approach is proposed for a class of non‐linear second‐order multi‐agent systems. For the existing NN consensus approaches, to obtain the desired approximation accuracy, the NN‐based adaptive consensus algorithms require the number of NN nodes to must be large enough, and thus the online computation burden often are very heavy. However, the proposed adaptive consensus scheme can greatly reduce the online computation burden, because the adaptive adjusting parameters are designed in scalar form, which is the norm of the estimation of the optimal NN weight matrix. According to Lyapunov stability theory, the proposed approach can guarantee the leader‐following consensus behaviour of non‐linear second‐order multi‐agent systems to be obtained. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has long been an ultrasensitive technique for trace molecule detection. However, the development of a sensitive, stable, and reproducible SERS substrate is still a challenge for practical applications. Here, we demonstrate a cost-effective, centimeter-sized, and highly reproducible SERS substrate using the nanosphere lithography technique. It consists of a hexagonally packed Ag metasurface on a SiO2/Au/Si substrate. A seconds-lasting etching process of a self-assembled nanosphere mask manipulates the geometry of the deposited Ag metasurface on the SiO2/Au/Si substrate, which attains the wavelength matching between the optical absorbance of the Ag/SiO2/Au/Si substrate and the excitation laser wavelength as well as the enhancement of Raman signals. By spin-coating a thin layer of graphene oxide on the substrate, a SERS performance with 1.1 × 105 analytical enhancement factor and a limit of detection of 10−9 M for melamine is achieved. Experimental results reveal that our proposed strategy could provide a promising platform for SERS-based rapid trace detection in food safety control and environmental monitoring. Ultrafine 50 nm line and space nanogratings were fabricated using nanoimprint lithography, and were further used as an alignment layer for liquid crystals. The surface morphologies of the nanogratings were characterized and their surface energies were estimated through the measurement of the contact angles for two different liquids. Experimental results show that the surface energies of the nanogratings are anisotropic: the surface free energy towards the direction parallel to the grating lines is higher than that in the direction perpendicular to the grating lines. Electro-optical characteristics were tested from a twisted nematic liquid crystal cell, which was assembled using two identical nanogratings. • A pixelated polarization calibration approach is proposed to enable efficient and precise programming of spatially-varying linearly polarized light. • The proposed approach is further verified by the implementation of the Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) lens with the focusing efficiency of 85.58 % for the circularly polarized light. The resolution of the fabricated LC planar optical elements with the proposed setup can reach 1.54 μm. • The proposed liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LC-SLM)-based exposure system can enable arbitrary alignment patterns fabrication for LC molecules with only one single exposure step, providing great potential for vectorial light field generation and LC-based planar optics. The use of liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LC-SLM) to manipulate the polarization of the light has been widely explored for different applications, including optical field manipulation, maskless lithography, polarization imaging, and LC planar-optics, among others. Precise polarization manipulation of LC-SLM is therefore highly demanded. Here, we introduce a high-efficiency approach for calibrating the polarization manipulation of a parallel-aligned LC-SLM. The approach revolves around the primary calibration criterion, the degree of polarization (DoP). Through parameter optimization to generate the calibration grayscale, a remarkable DoP as high as 97 % can be attained, with a sustained DoP level of up to 93.7 %. Experimental results showcase outstanding DoP uniformity in the modulated beam achieved with the calibrated LC-SLM. The root mean square error (RMSE) of polarization for modulated light from LC-SLM is about 0.018. A pixelated polarization calibration approach is proposed to enable efficient and precise programming of spatially-varying linearly polarized light (SVLPL), which can be further verified by the implementation of the Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) lens. The resolution of the fabricated LC planar optical elements with our setup can reach 1.54 μm. In this paper, for the flexible marine riser system with the top tension constraint, the output feedback controller is developed to suppress the vibration of the riser. The dynamic behavior of the flexible riser is expressed by the partial differential equation (PDE). Firstly, a high-gain observer is designed to estimate unmeasurable system states. Secondly, the top tension of the riser is constrained with the aid of the logarithmic barrier Lyapunov function, and the output feedback boundary controller is developed using the direct Lyapunov method. Through rigorous mathematical analysis, the consistently bounded stability of the closed-loop system is achieved. This article focuses on the adaptive control problem for Arneodo chaotic systems. It is considered a phenomenon of single state constraint for the systems. In the proposed scheme, the barrier Lyapunov function approach was successfully used to prevent the single state from violating constraint conditions. In the current circumstances, a great many of the results for chaotic systems neglect the situation of constraint. Finally, it is proved that all the signals in the Arneodo chaotic system are bounded. A representative example is proposed in numerical simulations compared with existing results. In this paper, an effective adaptive tracking control approach is constructed for the sixth-order induction motor model which is in discrete-time form. The fuzzy logic systems (FLSs) are applied to estimate a control law and used to a block strict feedback form (BSFF) which is in existence of bounded disturbances. Then, a desired optimal control can be achieved. Depend on the Lyapunov analysis approach, for the considered system, the stability is guaranteed, the tracking error can be ensured to a small neighborhood around zero, and the weight estimates can be insured to semi-global uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB). An advantage for the controlled system is that the proposed algorithm needs only less parameters which is different from the existing results, therefore, it can reduce the calculation amount. In this paper, an adaptive critic neural network controller is designed for a class of discrete-time chaotic system. The critic neural network is used to approximate the long-term function. In contrast with the existing results for discrete-time chaotic systems, in this paper, a near optimal control input can be generated when the long-term function is minimized. The PRO-BPE cocrystals were characterized using various analytical techniques, including differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction was performed to determine the crystal structure of PRO-BPE. PRO-BPE crystallized in the triclinic crystal system P-1 space group and its asymmetric unit consists of half a BPE molecule and one PRO molecule. The N1 atoms located at both ends of the BPE molecule form stable hydrogen bonds with two PRO carboxyl hydrogens through N1···H4—O4 (1.777 Å, 166.78°) interactions, whereas the O3 atoms of the carboxylic groups form C1—H1···O3 (2.479 Å, 132.10°) hydrogen bonds with two pyridyl hydrogens, resulting in a stable seven-membered ring structure. Furthermore, these fragments are further assembled via C—H···O intermolecular interactions to form a two-dimensional layered structure. Interestingly, the two pyridyl rings of each BPE molecule engage in π···π interactions with the benzene rings of two other non-coplanar PRO molecules. Finally, a three-dimensional framework structure is formed through intramolecular non-covalent interactions. Comprehensive characterization analyses provided further information regarding PRO-BPE cocrystal formation. Based on the equilibrium solubility results, the water solubility of the PRO-BPE cocrystal was superior to that of pure PRO, with an increase of 2.43 times. Recent efforts in stimuli‐responsive soft materials have enabled wirelessly controlled actuation with increasing degrees of freedom, yielding miniature robots capable of various locomotion in open environments such as on a plane or inside fluids. However, grand challenges remain in harnessing photomechanical deformation to induce locomotion and control of friction during the movement, especially for robotic actuations within constrained spaces. Here, the authors report a centimeter‐long polymer strip made of a liquid crystal network that is capable of versatile light‐fueled motions along a human hair. The soft polymer robot can translocate directionally upon temporally modulated excitation and climb vertically through friction control with light. A self‐oscillating strip is demonstrated to continuously translocate along the hair upon a constant light stimulus, and its gaiting is associated to the smoothness of the hair surface. Optical metasurfaces are 2D flat elements that consist of spatially arranged meta‐atoms. By carefully designing the metasurface, it is possible to fully control the properties of light in amplitude, phase, and/or polarization. When merged with liquid crystals (LCs), a metasurface can act as a reconfigurable optical component enabling dynamical control of light. However, many reports ignore the influence of the meta‐atom's geometry on the orientation of LCs. Here, it is proposed to synergistically merge LCs and specially designed gold metasurfaces for multiple optical functions. Gold metasurfaces are designed as a template to align the LC molecules in a resolution of ≤2 µm. Meanwhile, the aligned LCs are used to actively control the polarization of the incident light, further achieving active modulation of the plasmonic resonances of gold metasurfaces. The synergistic mergence of LCs and metasurfaces can enable a designed optical device to work simultaneously in both visible and near infrared ranges, which is highly promising for multiple applications simultaneously, such as high‐resolution display, modulation, anti‐counterfeiting, beam deflection, LiDAR, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, an adaptive controller is investigated for a class of uncertain single-input-single-output nonlinear systems preceded by an unknown backlash-type hysteresis nonlinearity, which is modeled by a differential equation. Backstepping design procedure is employed to construct the control input and adaptation laws. A new algorithm is designed to reduce the computational burden compared with previous work for unknown backlash-type hysteresis. Based on Lyapunov stability theory, all the signals in the closed-loop system are bounded, and the system output can track the reference signal to a bounded compact set. The ultimate goal of a steganography algorithm is to carry as many bits as possible without introducing any detectable artifact into the cover object. However, embedding quality and payload have an antagonistic relationship. Then, people often make a tradeoff between them depending on their different desires. In this paper, a new steganography algorithm for grayscale images with large payload and acceptable visual effect is proposed. We use a group of functions to guide cover pixel pairs' modification and imply two secret digits base-9 numeral system one time. From the experimental results, the embedding capacity of the proposed algorithm achieves 3.1699 bit per pixel, which is much larger than that of the published works, while the visual quality of stego images is acceptable too. However, engineering the properties of artificial materials at the nanoscale is challenging and costly. Here we demonstrate a facile and low-cost method for fabricating large-area silver nanoparticle metasurfaces (AgNPMSs) by using the vectorial holography-mediated growth technique. The AgNPMS, which can be regarded as a hologram device, possesses excellent chiroptical properties.
