104. Large Clones on Cliff Faces: Expanding by Rhizomes through Crevices

Abstract

Background and Aims Large clones of rhizomatous plants are found in many habitats, but little is known about whether such clones also occur on cliff faces where environmental conditions are extremely harsh and heterogeneous. Methods Using molecular (intersimple sequence repeat, ISSR) markers, the genotypic composition of a cliff-face population of Oxyria sinensis in Sichuan, China, was investigated. Key Results The 98 O. sinensis ramets sampled belonged to 12 different genotypes (clones). The three most frequent clones were represented with 45, 22 and 12 ramets, respectively; the remaining nine were represented with only one to five ramets. The three largest clones spanned at least 2·7 m in the vertical direction and 4·6-6·9 m in the horizontal direction on the cliff face. Conclusions On the cliff face, large clones of O. sinensis are formed by rhizomes growing along the crevices. Expansion by rhizomes may help O. sinensis to exploit the patchy resources and support establishment and growth of new ramets. Moreover, rooted ramets connected by rhizomes may effectively reduce the susceptibility of O. sinensis to rock fall and erosion and thus greatly improve the chances for long-term survival. Abstract

Anti-aging skin care is a growing popular topic in cosmetic and aesthetic fields, and skin care rather then makeup tips draw more attention nowadays. The phenomenon of skin aging includes thinning of skin losses of elasticity and moisture, pigmented spot formation, and wrinkle development. Along with growth in age, the decreased rates of epithelium renewal and cellular recovery as well as the reduced contents of elastin, collagen, and glycosaminoglycans all contribute to creases or folds of skin. Available strategies for wrinkle treatments include topical use of skin care products with anti-aging contents, dermabrasion, laser, Botox injection, fillers injection, and facelift. Though all of these above options can provide different degrees of improvement in facial wrinkles, the cost-effect, pain of intervention therapy, and necessity of repetitive treatment may impact on choices made. Topical use of anti-aging skin products is the most convenient and cheap way to achieve skin anti-aging effect. Lycogen(TM) is an antioxidant, which can prevent the downregulation of pro-collagen I, intracellular accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA) and achieve the aim of skin rejuvenation.Twenty-six female patients were included in our study with ages between 30 and 45. They were randomly assigned to two groups: the vehicle control group and the experimental group. Patients in the control group applied a skin care product without Lycogen(TM)to the face via sonophoresis after facial cleanser use in the morning and at night. The experimental group applied a Lycogen(TM) -containing skin care product via sonophoresis in the same time schedule. We evaluated results, including pigmented spots, wrinkles, texture, pores, and red area by VISIA on weeks 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 respectively.In the aspect of pigmented spots, the experimental group showed significant difference in comparison with the vehicle control group on weeks 2, 6, 8, and 10. For wrinkles, the experimental group had better results on weeks 1, 2, 4, 8, and 10. Measured by texture, the experimental group had better results on weeks 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10. Determined by pores, the experimental group had better results on weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10. Concerning red areas, the experimental group had better results on weeks 6, 8, and 10. (p0.05).In our study, we applied a Lycogen(TM)- containing product by sonophoresis as the experimental group in comparison with a skin care product without LycogenTM. VISIA (Canfield Imaging Systems, Fairfield, NJ) was used to evaluate facial skin in aspects of pigmented spots, wrinkles, texture, pores, and red area. Overall, Lycogen(TM) had proven effectiveness on anti-oxidation as patients who used the Lycogen TM -containing product had better outcomes.

Abstract

The majority of men with defects in spermatogenesis remain undiagnosed. Acephalic spermatozoa is one of the diseases causing primary infertility. However, the causes underlying over half of affected cases remain unclear. Here, we report by whole‐exome sequencing the identification of homozygous and compound heterozygous truncating mutations in PMFBP1 of two unrelated individuals with acephalic spermatozoa. PMFBP1 was highly and specifically expressed in human and mouse testis. Furthermore, immunofluorescence staining in sperm from a normal control showed that PMFBP1 localizes to the head‐flagella junction region, and the absence of PMFBP1 was confirmed in patients harboring PMFBP1 mutations. In addition, we generated Pmfbp1 knock‐out (KO) mice, which we found recapitulate the acephalic sperm phenotype. Label‐free quantitative proteomic analysis of testicular sperm from Pmfbp1 KO and control mice showed 124 and 35 proteins, respectively, increased or decreased in sperm from KO mice compared to that found in control mice. Gene ontology analysis indicates that the biological process of Golgi vesicle transport was the most highly enriched in differentially expressed proteins, indicating process defects related to Golgi complex function may disturb formation of the head‐neck junction. Collectively, our data indicate that PMFBP1 is necessary for sperm morphology in both humans and mice, and that biallelic truncating mutations in PMFBP1 cause acephalic spermatozoa. Child development level was compared between the two groups. Methods: Teachers completed screening questionnaires for ADHD, ASD, and development level for 36- to 72-month-old children in kindergartens in Taiwan. The questionnaire results were compared between the aboriginal and nonaboriginal children. One child psychiatrist then interviewed the aboriginal preschool children to determine if they had ADHD and/or ASD. Results: We collected 93 questionnaires from the aboriginal group and 60 from the nonaboriginal group. In the aboriginal group, 5.37% of the children were identified to have ADHD, while 1.08% were identified to have ASD. Significantly fewer aboriginal children had developmental delays for situation comprehension and personal–social development (P=0.012 and 0.002, respectively) than nonaboriginal children. Abstract

We investigate the phase coherent transport in a single channel system. The theory that the transmission zeros lead to abrupt phase change and in-phase resonances is confirmed numerically in two tight-binding models. After calculating the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Hamiltonians we also confirmed that the same symmetry of the eigenvectors also leads to the abrupt phase change and in-phase resonances that equal the transmission zero.

Abstract

We study transport properties in,a coupled double-plane system with one pure and the other random, in the presence of a transverse random magnetic field. The localization.length and conductance of the system are calculated by using the finite-size scaling method combined with transfer matrix technique. We find that in the scaling transformation there is a set of fixed points in a continuous line, indicating that the system undergoes a disorder-driven Kosterlitz-Thouless-type metal-insulator transition.

Abstract

Insulin resistance is one of the most important mechanisms of diabetes mellitus. Anti-oxidants had been proved to improve insulin resistance. However, the direct relation between anti-oxidants and glucose homeostasis is still elusive. Recently, we found that LycogenTM (extracts of Rhodobacter sphaeroides WL-APD911) has lycopene-like activity. Furthermore, LycogenTM showed more potent anti-oxidative effect and less cytotoxicity than lycopene. To evaluate the effect of LycogenTM on blood glucose levels, STZ-induced diabetic mice were randomly divided into four groups: (1) diabetes control group; (2) diabetes+LycogenTM 50 mg/kg; (3) diabetes+LycogenTM 100 mg/kg; and (4) diabetes+LycogenTM 200 mg/kg. Abstract

OBJECTIVES: Serum creatinine is an important clinical marker for renal clearance. However, the Jaffe method had much interference and the accuracy had not been tested in patients under hemodialysis (HD) with standard isotope dilution‐liquid chromatography‐mass spectrometry (IDLCMS) method. The validity of enzymatic method is also unknown. METHODS: The predialysis serum creatinine levels of 126 patients under regular HD for 3 months were checked by Jaffe, enzymatic, and IDLCMS methods. We compared the value of the Jaffe and enzymatic to that of IDLCMS in linear regression model. And we also tried to find the clinical parameters that influence the difference between Jaffe vs. IDLCMS and enzymatic vs. IDLCMS method. RESULTS: We found significant underestimate serum creatinine in uremic patients by Jaffe and enzymatic methods. Serum glucose and globulin are positive biases, whereas albumin, potassium, and phosphorus are negative biases. Enzymatic method is less affected by serum glucose and serum protein. Albumin acts differently in uremic serum compared to the results of mixing them with normal serum. CONCLUSIONS: For uremic patients, in whom creatinine level is high and many of them suffered from diabetes mellitus, serum creatinine can be either under‐ or overestimated by Jaffe method. Objective: To evaluate the effect of Ginkgo biloba extract (EGB) on the serum levels of cytokines in patients suffering from chronic, age-related neurological disorders (NDs). Materials and Methods: Patients received 9.6 mg of EGB twice daily for 8 weeks. Abstract

In the past, conventional edge-coupled differential serpentine and spiral delay lines were widely employed to minimize the clock skew and to compensate the time skew between two differential pairs in high speed printed circuit boards application. Now, in order to minimize the circuit size in a miniaturized design, the spacing between two parallel adjacent unit lines of delay line will be closer and closer, but it is facing electromagnetic coupling and crosstalk noise from adjacent lines. Furthermore, the time skew between positive and negative lines of the edge-coupled differential delay lines results from the lines with non-symmetrical right-angle bended routing, the common mode noise will also get higher and higher. Thus, new differential routing schemes of serpentine and spiral delay lines with broadside-coupled geometry were proposed to reduce the common mode noise. Moreover, in order to validate the accuracy of presented inductive and capacitive circuit models applied to broadside-coupled geometry, the 3-D full wave simulation and measurement validations of near-end crosstalk noise, far-end crosstalk noise and eye diagram have been also implemented in this paper.
