Abstract

In this article we discuss two aspects related to the 12C + 12C fusion reaction at low energies for carbon burning in supermassive stars. First we present plausible arguments for the notion that the observed resonance structures at the lowest measured energies arise from the relatively large spacing and narrow width of 24Mg compound levels at the corresponding excitation energy region. We thus point out that the Incoming Wave Boundary Condition is inappropriate for calculating the fusion cross section under these situations. Secondly, we report on a particle-γ coincidence technique that has been used for the first time to measure the fusion cross section in the system 12C + 12C at low beam energies. Based on these results, it should be possible to measure this important fusion cross section down to the 10 pb level within a reasonable length of time.

Abstract

An earlier measurement on the 4$^+$ to 2$^+$ radiative transition in $^8$Be provided the first electromagnetic signature of its dumbbell-like shape. However, the large uncertainty in the measured cross section does not allow a stringent test of nuclear structure models. The present paper reports a more elaborate and precise measurement for this transition, via the radiative capture in the $^4$He+$^4$He reaction, improving the accuracy by about a factor of three. The {\it ab initio} calculations of the radiative transition strength with improved three-nucleon forces are also presented. Abstract

The N ∼ 90 region of the nuclear chart has featured prominently as the spectroscopy of nuclei at extreme spin has progressed. This talk will present recent discoveries from investigations of high spin behavior in the N ∼ 90 Er, Tm and Yb nuclei utilizing the Gammasphere gamma-ray spectrometer. In particular it will include discussion of the beautiful shape evolution and coexistence observed in these nuclei along with the identification of a remarkable new family of band structures. The latter are very weakly populated rotational sequences with high moment of inertia that bypass the classic terminating configurations near spin 40-50h{stroke}, marking a return to collectivity that extends discrete γ-ray spectroscopy to well over 60h{stroke}. Establishing the nature of the yrast states in these nuclei beyond the oblate band-termination states has been a major goal for the past two decades. Cranking calculations suggest that these new structures most likely represent stable triaxial strongly deformed bands that lie in a valley of favored shell energy in deformation and particle-number space.

Abstract

The isotope 257Rf was produced in the fusion-evaporation reaction 208Pb (50Ti, n) 257Rf. Reaction products were separated by the Argonne Fragment Mass Analyzer. Radioactive decay and spontaneous fission of 257Rf and its decay products were investigated. An isomeric state in 257Rf, with a half-life of 160-3142μS , was discovered by detecting internal conversion electrons followed by alpha decays. It is interpreted as a three-quasiparticle high-K isomer. A second group of internal-conversion electrons which were succeeded by alpha decay, with ahalf-life of 4.1 s+2.24 was observed. These events might originate from the decay of excited states in 257Lr, populated by electron-capture decay of 257, or from another isomer in 257Rf.

Abstract

The surrogate ratio technique is described. New results for neutron induced fission cross sections on actinide nuclei, obtained using this technique are presented. The results benchmark the surrogate ratio technique and indicate that the method is accurate to within 5% over a wide energy range. New results for internal conversion coefficients in triaxial strongly deformed bands in 167Lu are also presented.

Abstract

We report on the first measurement of the fission barrier height in a heavy shell-stabilized nucleus. The fission barrier height of No-254 is measured to be B-f = 6.0 +/- 0.5 MeV at spin 15 (h) over bar and, by extrapolation, B-f = 6.6 +/- 0.9 MeV at spin 0 (h) over bar. This information is deduced from the measured distribution of entry points in the excitation energy versus spin plane. The same measurement is performed for Th-220 and only a lower limit of the fission barrier height can be determined: B-f (I) > 8 MeV. Comparisons with theoretical fission barriers test theories that predict properties of superheavy elements.

Abstract

Recent results on high-spin isomers populated in deep-inelastic reactions in the transitional tungsten-osmium region are outlined with a focus on 190Os, 192Os and 194Os. As well as the characterization of several two-quasinutron isomers, the 12+ and 20+ isomers in 192Os are interpreted as manifestations of maximal rotation alignment within the neutron i13/2 and possibly proton h11/2 shells at oblate deformation.

Abstract

The α decay of 183Pb has been studied in detail at the focal plane of the RITU gas-filled separator. The four previously known α decay branches have been ordered into the decay of two isomers in 183Pb. The deduced decay scheme and the interpretation of the inferred α decay hindrance factors and γ rays observed at the focal plane are strongly in favor of the recent suggestion of triple shape coexistence-oblate, prolate, and near-spherical in the daughter nucleus 179Hg.

Abstract

Excited states in 70Br were populated in the 40Ca(32S,pn) reaction at Ebeam = 80-100 MeV and the 40Ca(36Ar, αpn) reaction at Ebeam = 145 MeV. The resulting gamma decay was detected using the Gammasphere array triggered by a 30-element neutron detector. The cross-bombardment allowed the unambiguous assignment of levels to 70Br, comprising a total of 32 states built both on the Jπ=0+ ground state and a previously known Jπ=9+ isomer, which is located at an excitation energy of 2293 keV by the observation of linking transitions. The structures are discussed within the context of the two-quasiparticle plus rotor model, the IBM-4 model and the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky formalism. The nonobservation of a doublet of J = 0, T = 1 and J = 1, T = 0 states at low excitation in 70Br is indicative that T = 0 proton-neutron pairing strength is weak in comparison to T = 1 pairing.

Abstract

A study of excited states in Ni-63 up to an excitation energy of 28 MeV and a probable spin of 57/2 was carried out with the Mg-26(Ca-48,2 alpha 3n gamma)Ni-63 reaction at beam energies between 275 and 320 MeV. Three collective bands, built upon states of single-particle character, were identified. For two of the three bands, the transition quadrupole moments were extracted, herewith quantifying the deformation at high spin. The results have been compared with shell-model and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. Despite the Z = 28 shell closure and the approach to the purported N = 40 subshell, the Ni-63 isotope is able to sustain collective excitations at moderate and high spin.

Abstract

The study of the electromagnetic moments (EM), and decay probability, provides detailed information about nuclear wave functions. The well-know properties of EM interactions are good for extracting information about the motion of nucleons. Higher order EM processes always occur, but are usually too weak to be measured. In the case of a 0+ → 0+ transitions [1, 2], where a single gamma transition is forbidden, the simultaneous emission of two γ-rays has been studied. An interesting opportunity to further investigate 2-photon emission phenomena is by using a standard 137Cs source populating, via β-decay, the Jπ = 11/2- isomeric state at 662 keV in 137Ba. In this case, two photon process can have contributions from quadrupole-quadrupole or dipole-octupole multipolarities in direct competition with the high multipolarity M4 decay. Since the yield of the double gamma decay is around six orders of magnitude less than the first order transition, very good statistics are needed in order to observe the phenomena and great care must be taken to suppress the first-order decay. The Gammasphere array is ideal since its configuration allows a good coverage of the angular distribution and the Compton events can be suppressed. Nevertheless the process to understand and eliminate the Compton background is a challenge. Geant4 simulations were carried out to help understand and correct for those factors. Abstract

An in-beam study of excited states in the transfermium nucleus 252 No has been performed using the recoil separator RITU together with the JUROSPHERE II array at the University of Jyväskylä. This is the second transfermium nucleus studied in an in-beam experiment. Levels up to spin 20 were populated and compared to levels in 254 No . An upbend is seen at a frequency of 200 keV/ħ corresponding to spin 16. We also use an improved systematics to connect the energy of the lowest 2 + state with its half-life and find that the deformation of both 2 5 2 , 2 5 4 No is slightly larger than previously assumed. peerReviewed

Abstract

Precise electromagnetic transition matrix elements in Be-10 and C-10 have provided surprisingly stringent tests of modern ab initio calculations using realistic nuclear forces. The analog transition in B-10 can further constrain these new calculations and probe the symmetry of the wave functions across the A = 10 multiplet. We report on a careful measurement of the gamma-ray intensities from states populated in the B-10(p, p') reaction at 10 MeV, including a determination of the key E2 branch from the J = 2 T = 1 state at 5164 keV to the J = 0 T = 1 state at 1740 keV of 0.16(4)%.

Abstract

The spectroscopy and structure of excited states of N similar to Z nuclei in the mass 70-100 region has been investigated using two techniques. In the A similar to 70-80 region fusion evaporation reactions coupled with the recoil-beta-tagging method have been employed at Jyvaskyla to study low-lying states in odd-odd N = Z nuclei. Results from these and other data for known odd-odd nuclei above mass 60 will be discussed. In the heavier mass 90 region a fragmentation experiment has been performed using the RIS-ING/FRS setup at GSI. This experiment was primarily aimed at searching for spin gap isomers in nuclei around A similar to 96. The objectives of the latter experiment will be discussed.

Abstract

The medium spin, near yrast states of the fpg shell nuclei 58Ni, 61Cu, and 61Zn have been studied following the fusion evaporation of a 24Mg beam and a 40Ca target. Discrete transitions were unambiguously identified using the AYEBALL gamma-ray array in conjunction with the Argonne fragment mass analyzer and a split anode ionization chamber. The decay schemes of 5828Ni, 6129Cu, and 6130Zn have been extended with the results of gamma-gamma coincidences and directional correlation from oriented state measurements used to determine the level excitation energies, spins, and parities of a number of near yrast states. The decay schemes deduced are compared with previous work and interpreted in terms of shell model calculations, with a restricted basis of the f5/2, p3/2, p1/2 orbitals outside a 5628Ni core, and either the g9/2 orbital with a closed core, or f7/2 excitations from the core.
