The essay proposes an empirical study on the “territorialization” of social inequalities in Italian cities carried out with the support of digital cartography tools (Geographic Information System). The essay collects some of the results of the research project, still in progress, "GRIDAVI - Risk Management, Decision Uncertainty and Social Vulnerability", funded by the University of Catania as part of the PIACERI research program (PIAno di inCEntivi per la RIcerca di Ateneo 2020-22), Line of action 2.

Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is commonly characterized by severe dopamine (DA) depletion within the substantia nigra (SN) leading to a myriad of motor and non-motor symptoms. One underappreciated and prevalent non-motor symptom, Parkinson's disease-associated psychosis (PDAP), significantly erodes patient and caregiver quality of life yet remains vastly understudied. While the gold standard pharmacotherapy for motor symptoms Levodopa (LD) is initially highly effective, it can lead to motor fluctuations like LD-induced dyskinesia (LID) and non-motor fluctuations such as intermittent PDAP. One source of these fluctuations could be the serotonergic raphe nuclei and their projections. Serotonin (5-HT) neurons possess the machinery necessary to convert and release DA from exogenous LD. In DA-depleted brain regions these 5-HT projections can act as surrogates to the DA system initially compensating but chronically leading to aberrant neuroplasticity which has been linked to LID and may also contribute to non-motor fluctuations. In support, recent work from our lab established a positive relationship between LID and PDAP in parkinsonian rats. Therefore, it was hypothesized that normalizing 5-HT forebrain input would reduce the co-expression of LID and PDAP. Methods: To do so, we expressed 5-HT projection specific inhibitory designer receptor exclusively activated by designer drugs (DREADDs) using Cre-dependent AAV9-hM4di in tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2)-Cre bilaterally 6-OHDA-lesioned rats. Thereafter we used the designer drug Compound 21 to selectively inhibit 5-HT raphe projections during LD treatment to modulate the expression of PDAP, assayed by prepulse inhibition (PPI) and LID, quantified by the abnormal involuntary movements (AIMs) test. Results: Our results suggest that chemogenetic inhibition of 5-HT raphe-projecting cells significantly reduces LID without affecting stepping ability or established sensorimotor gating deficits Discussion: Overall, this study provides further evidence for the complex influence of 5-HT raphe-projecting neurons on LD's neurobehavioral effects. Background/Objectives: Adolescence is an important period of psychophysical development. In this phase of life people acquire greater self-awareness and adopt behaviors that will later shape their lifestyle in adulthood. This study aimed to assess whether family structure can influence adolescents' eating habits. Methods: Data were acquired from a survey titled 'Italian Health Behaviour in School-aged Children' (HBSC) given to a representative sample of Tuscan adolescents aged 11, 13, 15 and 17 years of age. Participants (3210) filled out a validated questionnaire answering questions about their eating habits and family structure. After adjusting for covariates, some interesting trends were highlighted in the survey results. Results: Adolescents living in single-mother families reported a lower intake of fruits (OR 0.68, 95% CI = 0.55–0.83) and vegetables (OR 0.66, 95% CI = 0.53–0.81) and a higher intake of sugar-added soft drinks (OR 1.33, 95% CI = 1.08–1.64). Living in a mother and stepfather family was associated with a higher intake of sugar-added soft drinks (OR 1.53, 95% CI = 1.02–2.28), whereas living in a father and stepmother family was associated only with a lower intake of fruits (OR 0.48, 95% CI = 0.26–0.87). Participants living with other family types reported a lower intake of vegetables (OR 0.68, 95% CI = 0.47–0.98). Abstract Source device identification is an important topic in image forensics since it allows to trace back the origin of an image. Its forensics counterpart is source device anonymization, that is, to mask any trace on the image that can be useful for identifying the source device. A typical trace exploited for source device identification is the photo response non-uniformity (PRNU), a noise pattern left by the device on the acquired images. In this paper, we devise a methodology for suppressing such a trace from natural images without a significant impact on image quality. Expressly, we turn PRNU anonymization into the combination of a global optimization problem in a deep image prior (DIP) framework followed by local post-processing operations. In a nutshell, a convolutional neural network (CNN) acts as a generator and iteratively returns several images with attenuated PRNU traces. By exploiting straightforward local post-processing and assembly on these images, we produce a final image that is anonymized with respect to the source PRNU, still maintaining high visual quality. With respect to widely adopted deep learning paradigms, the used CNN is not trained on a set of input-target pairs of images. Instead, it is optimized to reconstruct output images from the original image under analysis itself. This makes the approach particularly suitable in scenarios where large heterogeneous databases are analyzed. Moreover, it prevents any problem due to the lack of generalization. Through numerical examples on publicly available datasets, we prove our methodology to be effective compared to state-of-the-art techniques.

BackgroundNowadays, there is no gold standard score for prehospital sepsis and sepsis-related mortality identification. The aim of the present study was to analyze the performance of qSOFA, NEWS2 and mSOFA as sepsis predictors in patients with infection-suspected in prehospital care. The second objective is to study the predictive ability of the aforementioned scores in septic-shock and in-hospital mortality.MethodsProspective, ambulance-based, and multicenter cohort study, developed by the emergency medical services, among patients (n = 535) with suspected infection transferred by ambulance with high-priority to the emergency department (ED). The study enrolled 40 ambulances and 4 ED in Spain between 1 January 2020, and 30 September 2021. All the variables used in the scores, in addition to socio-demographic data, standard vital signs, prehospital analytical parameters (glucose, lactate, and creatinine) were collected. For the evaluation of the scores, the discriminative power, calibration curve and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used.ResultsThe mSOFA outperformed the other two scores for mortality, presenting the following AUCs: 0.877 (95%CI 0.841–0.913), 0.761 (95%CI 0.706–0.816), 0.731 (95%CI 0.674–0.788), for mSOFA, NEWS, and qSOFA, respectively. No differences were found for sepsis nor septic shock, but mSOFA’s AUCs was higher than the one of the other two scores. The calibration curve and DCA presented similar results.ConclusionThe use of mSOFA could provide and extra insight regarding the short-term mortality and sepsis diagnostic, backing its recommendation in the prehospital scenario.

Parkinson's disease associated psychosis (PDAP) is a prevalent non-motor symptom (NMS) that significantly erodes patients' and caregivers' quality of life yet remains vastly understudied. One potential source of PDAP in late-stage Parkinson's disease (PD) is the common dopamine (DA) replacement therapy for motor symptoms, Levodopa (L-DOPA). Given the high incidence of L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia (LID) in later phases of PD, this study sought to characterize the relationship between PDAP and LID in a bilateral medial forebrain bundle 6-hydroxydopamine hydrobromide (6-OHDA) lesion rat model. To assess PDAP in this model, prepulse inhibition (PPI), a well-validated assay of sensorimotor gating, was employed. First, we tested whether a bilateral lesion alone or after chronic L-DOPA treatment was sufficient to induce PPI dysfunction. Rats were also monitored for LID development, using the abnormal involuntary movements (AIMs) test, to examine PPI and LID associations. In experiment 2, Vilazodone (VZD), a serotonin transporter (SERT) blocker and 1A receptor (5-HT1A) partial agonist was administered to test its potential efficacy in reducing LID and PPI dysfunction. Once testing was complete, tissue was collected for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to examine the monoamine levels in motor and non-motor circuits. Results indicate that bilateral DA lesions produced motor deficits and that chronic L-DOPA induced moderate AIMs; importantly, rats that developed more severe AIMs were more likely to display sensorimotor gating dysfunction. In addition, VZD treatment dose-dependently reduced L-DOPA-induced AIMs without impairing L-DOPA efficacy, although VZD's effects on PPI were limited. Altogether, this project established the bilateral 6-OHDA lesion model accurately portrayed LID and PDAP-like behaviors, uncovered their potential relationship, and finally, demonstrated the utility of VZD for reducing LID.

Gamma-ray emission in the MeV–GeV range from explosive cosmic events is of invaluable relevance to understanding physical processes related to the formation of neutron stars and black holes. Here we report on the detection by the AGILE satellite in the MeV–GeV energy range of the remarkable long-duration gamma-ray burst GRB 221009A. The AGILE onboard detectors have good exposure to GRB 221009A during its initial crucial phases. Hard X-ray/MeV emission in the prompt phase lasted hundreds of seconds, with the brightest radiation being emitted between 200 and 300 s after the initial trigger. Very intense GeV gamma-ray emission is detected by AGILE in the prompt and early afterglow phase up to 10,000 s. Time-resolved spectral analysis shows time-variable MeV-peaked emission simultaneous with intense power-law GeV radiation that persists in the afterglow phase. The coexistence during the prompt phase of very intense MeV emission together with highly nonthermal and hardening GeV radiation is a remarkable feature of GRB 221009A. During the prompt phase, the event shows spectrally different MeV and GeV emissions that are most likely generated by physical mechanisms occurring in different locations. AGILE observations provide crucial flux and spectral gamma-ray information regarding the early phases of GRB 221009A during which emission in the TeV range was reported.

Contemporary cities are the result of a combination of individual choices, which are increasingly differentiated in order to respond not only to the needs and expectations of the residents, but also to the requests coming from the rising number of populations temporarily crossing them. It is common knowledge that tourists have assumed a dominant role in cities due to two main factors: on the one hand, the worldwide steady increase in tourism over the past thirty years, with the exception of slight downturns (i.e., the two years after the attack on the twin towers); on the other hand, the economic power exercised by tourism and the consequences it has on the destinations. The urban areas of the south of Europe are not exempted from the dynamics of these social and economic changes. In particular, this article presents the results of an empiric study of migration flows and international tourism-related consumption in some coastal towns in the south of Italy. The analysis was conducted with the technical support of cartographic representations of data (Geographic Information System). Thanks to the analysis of the data stored in the Banca d’Italia archive, the work focuses on two main aspects of the international tourism demand. Firstly, the entity and the features of the flows (according to age, provenance, motivation) will be studied, in order to identify the specific attractiveness of the various destinations. Secondly, the study aims to analyze the dynamics of the consumption behavior patterns in international tourism, with particular attention to daily expenses, such as transport, food and accommodation, entertainment (i.e. shows, events, excursions) and culture (i.e. museums, theatres). The aim of the study is to problematize the principal changes in the international tourism demand highlighting new trends emerging in Mediterranean towns, in particular in the South of Italy. A lack of horizontal and vertical subsidiarity has been noted, including the deficiency of government and governance measures, which would allow these towns to plan a more effective tourism offer, consolidating the idea of the territory as a heritage and a project. This deficiency has lead to the outlining of a tourism offer that mainly tends to rhetorically emphasize some scarcely significant traits rather than focus on the identity of the places themselves.

In this study, the effectiveness of an experimental clinical technique for the reproduction of attachments during an orthodontic treatment with clear aligners was evaluated using a new index (CorAl) for quality assessment that exploits the differential entropy of point clouds. The procedure involves the use of a pre-drilled template and a second pre-loaded template with a high-viscosity composite and is compared with the standard technique. Attachment planning was conducted on four prototypes of dental arches with extracted teeth which were divided into two groups according to the proposed operating procedures. Digital scans were utilized to capture dental impressions for both the purposes of virtual planning and to reproduce the clinical outcomes post-procedure. The point clouds obtained after the reproduction of the attachments were aligned with those from the virtual planning, and the deviation analysis was conducted using the quality index of the CorAl method. Though no significant discrepancies were found among the groups regarding morphological flaws, detachments, or maximum defect values, the differential entropy analysis revealed that the experimental technique offers good alignment in attachment placement. The outcome supports that the innovative procedure of the clinical reproduction of attachments proved to be reliable and operationally simple, with additional benefits derived from using the CorAl index. The advantages of CorAl include the use of a single comparison index, no problem of comparison commutativity, noise immunity, low influence from the presence of holes, and point cloud densities. This allows for the drawing of quality maps that show areas with the highest deviation.

Large-scale cooperation is needed to reduce existential risks like those posed by pandemics and climate change. Here the authors demonstrate that social norms can emerge and sustain cooperation in situations of collective risk and that the level of risk influences the strength of the norms.

We report the development and validation of the Multicultural Personality Inventory -- Short Form (MPI-SF). Results supported the correlated seven-factor model with a sample of 333 college students. Scores from MPI-SF factors were internally consistent, temporally stable over a one- and two-month period, and predicted variance in college adjustment consistent with multicultural personality theory.

With a view of the post-COVID-19 world and probable future pandemics, this paper presents an Internet of Things (IoT)-based automated healthcare diagnosis model that employs a mixed approach using data augmentation, transfer learning, and deep learning techniques and does not require physical interaction between the patient and physician. Through a user-friendly graphic user interface and availability of suitable computing power on smart devices, the embedded artificial intelligence allows the proposed model to be effectively used by a layperson without the need for a dental expert by indicating any issues with the teeth and subsequent treatment options. The proposed method involves multiple processes, including data acquisition using IoT devices, data preprocessing, deep learning-based feature extraction, and classification through an unsupervised neural network. The dataset contains multiple periapical X-rays of five different types of lesions obtained through an IoT device mounted within the mouth guard. A pretrained AlexNet, a fast GPU implementation of a convolutional neural network (CNN), is fine-tuned using data augmentation and transfer learning and employed to extract the suitable feature set. The data augmentation avoids overtraining, whereas accuracy is improved by transfer learning. Later, support vector machine (SVM) and the K-nearest neighbors (KNN) classifiers are trained for lesion classification. It was found that the proposed automated model based on the AlexNet extraction mechanism followed by the SVM classifier achieved an accuracy of 98%, showing the effectiveness of the presented approach.

Artificial intelligence has made substantial progress in medicine. Automated dental imaging interpretation is one of the most prolific areas of research using AI. X-ray and infrared imaging systems have enabled dental clinicians to identify dental diseases since the 1950s. However, the manual process of dental disease assessment is tedious and error-prone when diagnosed by inexperienced dentists. Thus, researchers have employed different advanced computer vision techniques, and machine- and deep-learning models for dental disease diagnoses using X-ray and near-infrared imagery. Despite the notable development of AI in dentistry, certain factors affect the performance of the proposed approaches, including limited data availability, imbalanced classes, and lack of transparency and interpretability. Hence, it is of utmost importance for the research community to formulate suitable approaches, considering the existing challenges and leveraging findings from the existing studies. Based on an extensive literature review, this survey provides a brief overview of X-ray and near-infrared imaging systems. Additionally, a comprehensive insight into challenges faced by researchers in the dental domain has been brought forth in this survey. The article further offers an amalgamative assessment of both performances and methods evaluated on public benchmarks and concludes with ethical considerations and future research avenues.
