Portable digital cameras are of widespread use today. Their image quality, low cost and portability have drastically changed the culture of photography. Professionals of many different areas start to take photos of documents, instead of photocopying them. This paper presents way of generation color documents from elements extracted from an original document image. This scheme yields synthetic documents of similar visual information to the original one. This method has several advantages as it allows a far more efficient way of storing and transmitting the information. Its rationale is to decompose a color document into paper and ink texture parameters and textual information. Reference counting is a simple and efficient way of performing graph transformation and management in which each graph node stores the number of pointers to it. Graph operations are performed in such a way to keep this property invariant. The major drawback of standard reference counting is its inability to work with cyclic structures, which appear ever so often in real applications. The author of this talk developed a series of cyclic reference counting algorithms whose applicability goes far beyond the implementation of garbage collectors in programming languages. This paper presents the milestones in the history of cyclic reference counting followed by two new applications: the consistent management of Web pages in the Internet and the correctly handling of processes in clusters and grids. BigBatch is a processing environment designed to automatically process batches of millions of monochromatic images of documents generated by production line scanners. It removes noisy borders, checks and corrects orientation, calculates and compensates the skew angle, crops the image standardizing document sizes, and finally compresses it according to user defined file format. BigBatch encompasses the best and recently developed algorithms for such kind of document images. BigBatch may work either in standalone or operator assisted modes. Symmetry information is used as the basis of a compression algorithm for images of decorative tiles yielding a compact representation. This allows faster network transmission and less space for storage of tile images. This paper presents an algorithm capable of automatically detecting the patterns of symmetry of images of tiles.
