This case study demonstrates teaching and learning activities in the school laboratory, and employs talk moves for the direct assessment of practical task effectiveness. By adopting a sociocultural linguistic approach (SCLA), learning chemistry is understood to be a discursive process in which knowledge is constructed through social interaction and language. Thus, learning may be identified by attending to the language used in classroom discourse. The multimodal communication that took place during two acid and alkali practical lessons for learners aged 11 and 12 years was filmed and transcribed. Analysis of the transcripts revealed the language learning opportunities afforded by the tasks and demonstrated that school chemistry practical lessons can be understood in terms of three linguistic opportunities: introducing, using, and reflecting upon language. This lesson structure could be employed to plan more inclusive and equitable practical lessons which foreground language and value discussion equally to manipulating equipment. Recasting practical lessons as sites for learning and using the language of chemistry, key words introduced by the teacher are tracked and counted throughout the lesson to identify when they are used and by whom. The novel 3-part practical (3P) framework and multimodal discourse analysis are employed to assign the use of key words to the macroscopic, submicroscopic or symbolic level of thought. This analysis reveals the centrality of a results table to structuring talk and the detrimental effect of introducing novice learners to multiple levels of thought simultaneously. The Talk Identification (ID) Grid has been developed and used here to analyse student group discourses using talk moves to signpost learning in the domain of ideas and the domain of observables. Descriptors are provided to support instructors in identifying talk moves and how these moves relate to practical task effectiveness to target interventions that improve learning procedural and conceptual knowledge in the laboratory.

The current study inquires about the cadets' practical training in their primary positions as interpreters/translators. The research is focused on efficient on-the-job training and its organizational procedures for the competence and competency-based approaches. The aim of the practical training of the cadets who study by Philology specialty is to apply English as a foreign language in service situations concerning language immersion and translating issues in the law-enforcement sphere. Needs analysis conducted by the Foreign Languages Department instructors testified to the great significance of the on-the-job training. The Academy's graduates were interviewed to specify the duties and skills required for their job performance and reveal the gaps in the academic study of the cadets by Philology specialty. For this reason, practical training in linguistics was developed to bring theory and practice together, to improve and foreground the theoretical knowledge through true-to-life task completion. Competencies analysis was made concerning higher education standards by specialty 035 Philology for the first (Bachelor's) level of higher education established by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and the relevant ones were selected. Twenty-two cadets of the Academy have undergone practical training in their would-be primary positions. It is expected that the cadets will be provided with relevant experience in the position of an interpreter/translator of the Division of International Cooperation and Border Representative Work and get essential links to the content of the future service. The consequent research will concern the practical training results verification based on their defense presentation assessment.

The purpose of the article is to identify the information services for creating mind maps in the process of linguistic training of future philologists at the seminars. A comparative analysis of the most used software products for creating mind maps was carried out based on an expert survey. The results of this analysis made it possible to choose a software product using mind maps. The results of the pedagogical experiment confirmed the assumption that mind maps are an effective means of mastering the knowledge of future philologists at the seminars. The use of mind maps in the processes of understanding information in the classroom affects the activity of students' listening, makes it possible to systematize information through personal understanding and structuring, and promotes effective memorization. The next areas of scientific research on the presented problem are the analysis of the effectiveness of mind maps in the independent work of students.

This paper addressed the under-investigated question whether speech act moves can be identified and classified in conversation by examining the content, positioning, and strategic role of utterances in turns and turn sequences. To this end, offering exchanges were analysed in the transcripts of 31 open role-plays. These were elicited from American native speakers through written prompts, and exemplified dialogues between interactants differing in terms of social distance and degree of power. In the data examined, the offerers and the offerees produced conversation management moves for opening, closing, and sustaining the interaction (e.g., summoning vs responding to summons), and goal-furthering moves for negotiating the offering exchange in line with their complementary initiating vs responding discursive and speech-act roles (e.g., motivating the offer vs the reaction to it). The study revealed that: the strategies realizing offers and reactions to them were similar across interactional role-relationships; clusters of moves showed preferred sequencing patterns; the interlocutors actively cooperated towards the co-construction of their interaction; and function-detecting heuristic prompts were particularly useful for the identification of moves in turns. Pedagogical implications were drawn from the findings, showing how model scripts may help language learners become familiar with the interactional strategies called for in goal-oriented communication.

This article argues that in the teaching of writing online, incidents of linguistic discrimination can be (in)directly caused by faculty unfamiliarity with online teaching best practices, lack of critical linguistic awareness, and the prevalent legacy of racist and monolingual ideologies. To address this issue, it is necessary to cultivate empathy as a bridge between instructors and students. This article calls for the interconnectedness of empathy and linguistic justice in online writing courses as tools to create more equitable and inclusive environments for "all" students. The article uses data from a longitudinal, cross-institutional study to apply an empathetic, linguistically just approach to OWI to examine assumptions around technology instructions and use. The authors stress the importance of understanding student perspectives and experiences and outline strategies that humanize students in online writing courses. Implications for teaching include a need for increased reflexivity and pedagogical clarity.

Although there are several studies conducted by linguistics researchers on the differences between the linguistic styles of female and male writers, there are not many studies conducted on the use of boosters in academic writing. Boosters are used to convince and emphasize statements made. This study analyzes the regularity of boosters used in the Introduction section of Ten Research Articles (RAs). The influence of gender differences in the use of specific boosters will also be looked at. A document analysis method was chosen as the 10 RAs were analyzed as the corpus in this study. The findings showed that male writers used more boosters than female writers. Even though the number of words for the female writers was more than the male writers, it did not affect the number of boosters used in the Introduction section of those articles. In conclusion, it can be deduced from the analysis that both the female and male writers used boosters to highlight their claims or their beliefs regardless of their gender, while the use of boosters was more evident among the male RAs as the male writers seemed to be more direct in illustrating and mentioning their claims.

The educational process has to manage the demand to meet all modern requirements for educational activities, which cannot be realized without proper formation of information and communication competence of teachers. The aim of this study is to identify the modern condition of formation and practice of information and communication competence of teachers in the paradigm of Ukrainian educational realities. Our task is to compare them with the practice of leading European countries and predicted directions of education-2030 with a focus on improving digital competencies of a teacher as an organizer of educational activities. A prominent place in the process of increasing the information and communication competence of teachers is occupied by the appropriate conditions for creating an information and communication environment for the formation of the future teacher of higher education institution. The methods of collection, analysis and systematization, data generalization concerning the modern condition of development of competencies in the usage of information and computer technologies by Ukrainian teachers and the whole world were used in the process of the study. An assessment of the readiness of Ukrainian teachers to provide online education has been made in the context of a world coronavirus pandemic. According to world experts, the pandemic has made radical and irreversible changes in modern ideas about learning, the role of teachers in the educational process, the set of competencies of teachers in the XXI century.

The study of phraseology is an advanced direction of teaching methods of Russian as a foreign language. Any non-native speaker embarking on a study of Russian is faced with the problems of understanding the phraseological units that the Russian language is replete with. Language learners experience particular difficulties when using phraseological units with the color designation component "black" in a real-life communicative situation. The problem of understanding the phraseology of the Russian language is associated with the fact that representatives of different countries have knowledge of the phraseology of their native language that encompasses regional geography, linguoculturological, national concepts, which often do not coincide with similar phenomena in the Russian environment. This paper scientifically substantiates the methodological system for working with phraseological units in the study of Russian as a foreign language. It presents a system of scientifically grounded assignments for foreigners to learn Russian as a foreign language.

When referring to peace, peacebuilding, and peace education, among others, some similarities and differences among them appear. Although some consider ELT as a peripheral field regarding peace construction, diverse enunciation modalities profile this interest. Inquiring into "what, where, when and who," I analyzed 55 articles and 36 presentation abstracts for this qualitative study to unveil what is understood as peace construction in ELT. This revision presents six tendencies. Gaps and opportunities of research action for teachers are synthesized. Time/space coordinates of enunciation modalities in peace construction are displayed. I describe who the teachers behind some studies might be, regarding their locus of enunciation. Conclusion remarks around the diverse nature of peace construction are discussed, as representing those links between imagined separated fields.

Landscapes have been and are an important aspect of any society, culture, economy and environment. Besides the role of landscape and Landscape Sciences in these arenas, there have been increasingly greater calls to incorporate landscape into the curriculum. Moreover, Landscape Education is beneficial in developing important foundations in students, particularly that of active citizenry. While the benefits of Landscape Education are evident, current research remains focused on Western, especially European, contexts. This article discusses how a leading Singapore public University incorporates Landscape Education within a relatively new module on Toponymy offered in the Linguistics and Multilingual Studies Programme. While the links between Linguistics and a course in Toponymy or even the links between Toponymy and Landscape may not be immediately apparent, an analysis of the content covered in the module demonstrates congruence to existing frameworks and principles in teaching Landscape Education and, at the same time, provides a case in point in interdisciplinarity, drawing from diverse disciplines such as Language, Linguistics, History, Geography, Landscape Sciences, Anthropological Linguistics, among many others. This study provides useful references for educational institutions in incorporating Landscape Education into their curriculum.

This paper identifies major strands of research interest in the ESP literature. Specifically, the review aims to highlight mainstay topics that have characterised research in this area as well as topics that are emerging in this field, or that have received rather limited research interest to date. Linguistic inquiry has been a major thrust of research endeavor, and this has largely been driven by the needs of ESP teachers for linguistic descriptions of specialist language use to inform the development of pedagogical descriptions of academic, workplace or professional English for use in instruction. The ESP literature is also rich in case studies of teaching that report practices in one setting. The review identifies a number of topics, such as learning ESP, ESP teaching practices across settings and ESP teacher education needs, which have received scant research interest. It is suggested that these are emerging avenues for research.

Texts appear as the highest level units in language teaching. Textlinguistics researchers have put forward the thesis that the largest linguistic unit is the text, not the sentence. The main purpose of this research is to determine the effect of using textlinguistic analysis method and its ability to aid students in understanding the texts in language classes and improving and enriching their comprehension and expression skills. The research conducted an experiment and collected data with interviews. The sample of the research consisted of 30 students studying at the University and taking the text linguistics course. Concept Test of Textlinguistic Analysis Method was used in the study. As a result of the research, it was determined that the "Textlinguistic Analysis Method" increased the students' comprehension and expression success in Turkish classes compared to the traditional method and contributed to the increase of their participation in the class.

This paper denotes the findings from an action research project, which applied problem-based learning (PBL) in linguistics courses in an MA TESOL program in Vietnam. The project aimed to study the extent to which the use of problem-based tasks in semantic courses could promote students' employment of higher-order thinking skills in their learning. It was found that the PBL approach was specifically appropriate in promoting higher-order thinking skills for students with passive learning habits in such Confucian heritage cultures as Vietnam. With well-designed problem-based tasks and adequate tutoring, students learned how to use higher-order thinking skills to facilitate their learning; how to stay more focused on the completion process of problem-based tasks; and how to be motivated to engage in learning activities. In addition, some students were encouraged to follow the same PBL approach in their own teaching practice. Problem-based tasks which took place at a fixed time during class seemed to cause students to lose interest. In addition, a lack of adequate job experience might also have limited the effectiveness and overall success of the problem-based tasks.

The widespread, theoretically-informed practice of curricula embedded academic language and learning development is generally acknowledged as the most productive method of improving tertiary student outcomes. University-wide comprehensive support, however, for the collaborative processes of interdisciplinary research, design, resource and staff development required to achieve this, is not common. Yet many practitioners continue to engage in embedding initiatives in response to faculty requests, despite institutional constraints on time and funding. This paper documents one such initiative, a common yet under-reported type, conducted one small step at a time over a number of years in a first-year core unit in the architecture faculty of a large metropolitan university in Australia. The paper aims to respond Wingate's (2018) call for more thorough documentation of pedagogic principles applied in embedding practice to allow for replicability. This granular examination of the first implementation and later refinements of the initiative shows how aligning practice with proven theoretical models, in this case, Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) and the SFL-based pedagogic model, the Teaching/ Learning Cycle (TLC), proved fruitful in constrained circumstances. The purpose of the study is to analyze the use of multimedia teaching technologies as a means of developing future linguists' professional foreign language competence and to substantiate the effectiveness of their use in professional training. A combination of modern methods of pedagogical research has been used to fulfil the set goals: theoretical methods, such as analysis, generalization, comparison, synthesis, and systematization of scientific, educational-methodological literature, to determine the current state of the research subject; empirical and diagnostic methods (observation, conversations, interviews, questionnaires, testing) to determine the effectiveness of using multimedia teaching aids and determine practical recommendations for their use; prognostic methods to ascertain and diagnose the level of professional foreign language competence in future linguists; pedagogical experiments to experimentally check the effectiveness of the application of multimedia teaching technologies (multimedia educational presentations) in the process of developing the professional foreign language competence of future linguists; and methods of mathematical statistics for quantitative and qualitative processing of research results and statistical verification of their objectivity using the Pearson X[superscript 2] test. The usefulness of multimedia technologies in the development of future linguists' foreign language competence has been substantiated. The practical aspects of creating multimedia presentations aimed at developing professional foreign language competence have been described. It has been proved that the use of multimedia educational presentations to create a foreign-language communicative environment during future linguists' professional training will increase the level of linguists' independent acquisition of educational information, as well as provide positive motivation for educational and future professional activities.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) teacher candidates must have a working knowledge of English linguistics in order to support their students' language development. This article reports on TESOL teacher candidates' reflective practice to highlight how interaction with non-native speakers can develop awareness of linguistic features of the English language through virtual exchange. Sixteen teacher candidates from a university in the United States were paired with 22 undergraduate English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners from a university in Mexico. The teacher candidates completed journal entries in which they analysed authentic language produced by their EFL partners during their virtual meetings. Teacher candidates were taking a course that covered topics related to pragmatics, semantics, morphology, phonology and syntax. Each teacher candidate submitted a final error analysis of recorded conversations to determine how many linguistic errors were made by their partners. This study describes the errors the teacher candidates were able to identify in order to explore the benefits of this reflective activity on their understanding of linguistics. This study confirms the need to utilize virtual exchange in teacher preparation programs and subsequent self-reflection in order to give teacher candidates a way to put linguistic content area into practice.

We propose a previously unexamined factor instrumental in learning vocabulary accounting for the differences between learning a native and a foreign language: the development of critical thinking in adolescence. We hypothesize that the difficulties experienced in foreign vocabulary development result from the learner's readiness to question new information. Following Gilbert's (1991) claim that rigorous critical thought is the last to emerge and children are prone to accept propositions uncritically, we suggest that it is to this absence of doubt that children owe their success in remembering lexical items after a single exposure, a phenomenon referred to as "fast mapping." The rationale is that the mental belief systems are memory's filtering mechanism for what to retain: information labelled as questionable is allowed to decay without being granted access to long-term memory. We present the results of an experiment suggesting that memory of new language forms is enhanced by the learner's conviction in their validity.

Over the past few decades, the notion of World Englishes has achieved much attention among linguists, language teachers, and other professionals. The present study explores the impact these trends have had on university education in the field of English philology and culture, focusing on the study programmes run by the Applied Languages Faculty, the University of Economics in Bratislava, Slovakia. Our research was designed to gain insights into the students' perception of varieties of English and identify those areas which require more attention in order to provide students with the most relevant content. The research sample contained 130 students of one BA and one MA programme. Our research was based on a questionnaire which provided us with the data on students' awareness of the studied issues. The data were subsequently processed using combined quantitative and qualitative methods. One part of the data was statistically analysed with regard to the frequency of certain aspects. The second part was analysed focusing on students' attitudes and evaluative statements. Results of the analysis indicated both the key tendencies in their thought and the orientation of the occasional excentric views. The research outcomes enabled us to establish several important facts, e.g. a relatively insufficient understanding of the relevant terminology and concepts, high awareness of the existence of varieties of English, and, simultaneously, low awareness of the features distinguishing those varieties, etc. The conclusions point out those areas which should be represented more extensively in our curricula to reflect the actual current situation in the English language.

Thematic progression can be applied as one of the techniques to analyse whether the paragraphs written are coherent or not. To this end, the present study scrutinized six English final reports written by the sixth semester students learning at an academy of secretary in Indonesia. The data originated from the six final reports were identified, parsed, analysed, and interpreted using qualitative approach with descriptive analysis related to theme and thematic progression patterns of systemic functional linguistics. Moreover, this was equipped by descriptive statistics showing the sum of data evaluated. The results of deciphering the data supported the claim that thematic progression can be administered as an alternative in seeing the coherence of students' writing work. This manifested by ninety-five percent of the paragraphs jotted down utilized thematic progressions and the clauses developed them formed theme patterns, hence they were coherent. The most encountered thematic progression was zigzag, as for the theme pattern, the unmarked topical structure dominated. These results indicated that the secretary academy students whose works investigated proven capable of writing final reports in English. From the overall findings, there are some steps to consider, especially in the field of writing final reports resides in secretarial academies. First, this study demonstrates how the theme patterns and their thematic progressions can be used as an instrument to see whether the addressed paragraphs are coherent or not. This, in turn, can assist lecturers, teachers, and instructors of language to determine whether the students need to be given some enrichment or not. Second, from this, it can be taken some measures to 'nurture' supervisors in terms of theme and thematic progression patterns before assigned to supervise the students while writing the final reports in the context of secretarial academies. Finally, the sixth semester students learning in academies of secretary can be introduced to the process of writing in which the theme and thematic progression discussion employed as the focus of the learned materials. By exploring the faces of context from the perspective of components, knowledge and cognition, this article concludes that context is at the core of pragmatic studies, which examines how context contributes to meaning and pragmatics will gain momentum when linguists and non-linguists tap into the field of context.

The present article investigates foreign language teacher training quality enhancement by surveying pedagogical university students' opinions on important aspects of the course of Introduction to Germanic Linguistics within the Educational Programme for Bachelor's Degree in Education. The prime purpose is to study the perception of the above-mentioned optional course by Drohobych Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University (DIFSPU) students, with a focus on its content, organization and relevance to foreign language teacher training as well as on its professional competence formation efficiency. The complexity of the problems involved requires a combination of different methods, i.e. empirical, theoretical and statistical ones. 42 undergraduate DIFSPU students majoring in 014 "Secondary Education (English Language and Literature)" and 014 "Secondary Education (German Language and Literature)" took part in the experiment. The main survey tool was a questionnaire reflecting the parameters of assessing the course of Introduction to Germanic Linguistics. The data collected provides a solid basis for the revision of the course content, structure, organization, educational significance and efficiency, based on the direct participants' assessments and comments. The students' feedback reveals: 1) unanimous approval of the content and organizational principles of the discipline; 2) mixed opinions on its importance in the structure of the Educational Programme for Bachelor's Degree in Education; 3) variability of the course efficiency assessments. The data obtained allow for determining the conditions of an efficient implementation of Introduction to Germanic Linguistics into educational practice, such as prior familiarization of students with its aim and essence, emphasis on its applicability and optionality as well as its adaptation to the level and needs of future teachers. The data interpretation equally contributes to establishing the prospects of enhancing the course: 1) proportionalizing diverse types of educational activities; 2) increasing flexibility and variability in the educative process organization; 3) more efficiently interiorizing its content in terms of professional education priorities for future teachers of the English and German languages.

Previous studies emphasized that there is a close connection between speech and thinking. The paper analyses the peripheral semantics of the German language's active vocabulary units to define how they represent the features of the national, linguistic picture of the world, namely, the mental traits of the German ethnos. Semantic methods and the extrapolation methods of typical secondary values on non-nonmental characteristics are used mainly; the comparative method was partially used. The contextual method was used as an auxiliary method for illustrating common ethical, aesthetic, and pragmatic guidelines (presuppositions) and stereotypes. The paper carried out: a) semantic analysis of peripheral lexical-semantic variants of arbitrarily and expediently selected notional parts of speech; b) comparison of peripheral semantics of similar words of German and Russian languages against the background of the Russian language; c) clarification of ethnoculturological connotation of individual Germanisms found in the Russian language. The article proves that peripheral semantics in its lexicosemantic, semasiological, and lexicographical understanding expresses key symptom complexes of German mentality, which can be expressed by concepts order, accuracy, family, wealth, quality, practicism and etc. It is found that the German linguistic picture of the world in comparison with the Russian one the material is marked by the minimalism of estimated values, practical orientation and is alluded to bookish style.

The subject at hand of this paper is intransitive prepositions, which E. Klima (1965) defined as prepositions that do not select syntactic objects. This word group comprises those linguistic units which traditional grammar used to consider as bicategorical, sometimes as adverbs, and in other instances as prepositions created through conversion. Through syntactic and lexical analysis, we intend to confirm that such words in both uses are prepositions rather than adverbs. This type of phrases that are projected only X head does not take complement semantically and structurally. From this point of view, PPs that are generated at level X [P + compl] are opposed, where the presence of a complement is mandatory. Prepositions that project a PPs component at level X have [- compl] feature and are called intransitive prepositions, while prepositions with [+ compl] feature which project a PP at level X are called transitive prepositions. This means that the intuition of an Albanian speaker for the PP component is elaborated not only within the traditional framework PP-P -- NP but also within PP-P structures. Another hypothesis of this paper is that the [- compl] feature of this type of prepositions is not an absolute feature, but rather a relative one -- which means that we do not have genuine intransitive prepositions but rather double feature prepositions [- compl, + compl] which sometimes appear as intransitive, sometimes as transitive which -- similar to transitive verbs with intransitive use -- we have called "ergative prepositions."

This qualitative single-case study examined the impact of a course informed by Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) on teacher candidates' knowledge about genre and language. The study was conducted with nineteen teacher candidates and lasted one semester. Data collected through analysis of two texts: a published children's book and a student text written by a fourth-grade bilingual student, both written in a fictional narrative genre. Texts were given at the beginning and end of the course. Data were analyzed through a rubric developed by the course instructor based on the SFL theory. In the rubric, twenty SFL areas regarding language and genre were created and participant comments falling under the proper area were noted on the rubric. Table of frequencies and graphs were created to present the data. Participants' original responses were also given to provide a meaningful context for the findings. Overall results indicated that although participants did not use metalanguage to the fullest potential, they were able to identify the language and genre-related items with higher frequency in both texts at the end of the course. Furthermore, at the beginning of the course, participants considered the published text as having the function of giving information to a reader and teaching how to respond to literature. However, after the course participants began to use it as a model to teach how to write genre- and language-specific information. Finally, analysis of student text indicated that after the course participants learned to see the issues of children's writing beyond mechanics.

Social studies texts often pose a challenge for readers because of their complex linguistics features, which can cause comprehension issues. Drawing upon Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), this study examines how authors create cohesive messages and meaning in an 11th-grade U.S. history textbook in relation to the history of diseases. Findings reveal four main cohesive resources: (1) referring words, (2) ellipses, (3) lexical cohesion, and (4) text connectives, are utilized to construct a message that holds together and builds from clause to clause. Consequently, a responsibility is placed on the reader to track the participant(s) while also forcing them to track the events in the rest of the clause. Although the function of cohesive resources helps the writer to express their ideas, it may also impede novice readers, such as emergent bilinguals, from keeping track of all the participants and information. Implications provide ways social studies teachers can take up a role as a language teacher to support comprehension of social studies content and language development.

The purpose of the research was to identify whether the English language e-classes that are automated and delivered through the Smart Sender platform influence the students' attendance and procrastination rates, their motivation, time management skills, cognitive processing speed, and satisfaction. The study used qualitative and quantitative methods to monitor students' attendance and procrastination rates, motivation and engagement, time management skills, thinking speed, and satisfaction. The questionnaire on learning motivation, engagement, and competence, the time management skills test, the mental speed test, and the course satisfaction questionnaire were used to collect data. The focus group discussion questionnaire was used to obtain verbal feedback for the participants. The Smart Sender platform proved effective as an instructional tool for teaching the English Language to students majoring in Philology, International Business, and Law. The automated delivery of the English language e-classes was effective in addressing the issues of dropouts and procrastination in distance learning through automation of the lesson delivery based on the 'push' factor. It increased students' motivation, improves time management skills, and satisfaction. The quantitative findings showed that the students experienced a positive change in attendance, motivation and learning engagement, time management skills, and thinking speed due to the intervention. The students perceived the automated delivery-based approach to language teaching positively. They reported that the delivery approach content met the participants' expectations and needs. Focus group discussion revealed that the intervention changed their learning behaviour and strategies which were considered the improvements of the quality learning outcomes.

The purpose of the study was to explore how technological advances incorporated into the Philology Studies curriculum could impact the students' research skills and the quality of their research projects and what students' and teachers' impressions of the reshaped research component of the curriculum were. The study used qualitative and quantitative methods with the dominance of qualitative methods. It employed the baseline study, checklist to assess students' research papers, assessment criteria, and the Triangular Assessment Method to assess the students' papers. The consensus meeting was held to allow the experts to express their reasoning for the scores. The semi-structured interview was administered to the students' and teachers' to identify their impressions of the reshaped research component of the curriculum of philology. The technological advances incorporated into Philology Studies curriculum improve the students' research skills and the quality of their research projects. Both students and teachers appreciated the reshaped research component of the curriculum. The analytical software can be successfully incorporated in the corpus analysis-purpose student research. The students found the intervention a challenging experience that 'pumped up' their intellectual, research, and technical skills. They reported improvement in interpreting corpus using correlations, frequencies, distributions, and collecting information using software to organise it in a professional way. The lecturers agreed that the technology-based instructional model incorporated into Philology Studies curriculum improved both students' research skills and the quality of their research projects.

Adopting Hyland's (2002) framework of reporting words (RVs), the paper investigates the use of RVs in Master's theses written in English by students of two disciplines, Economics and Management and Natural Resources. The data were drawn from two sub-corpora, each consisting of 82 Literature Reviews, where other authors' research is summarised and commented on. Besides determining the most frequent communicative functions, in this paper, the RVs are further analysed in terms of the verb tense, voice, and subject-agent. The findings revealed significant differences between the two disciplines. In the former, most RVs were in the present active with named-author as the subject, conveying a neutral attitude towards the reported message and neutrally summarising previous research outcomes. Most RVs were in the past tense in the latter, reporting on past research procedures or outcomes. The findings reveal infrequent use of evaluative or critical verbs. Each discipline's predominant choice may suggest writers' lower ability to highlight the cited sources' direct relevance to their research. The study hopes to contribute to the efficacy of teaching English for Academic Purposes to non-native speakers. It has pedagogical implications for academic writing in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses at non-philological tertiary education institutions.

Purpose: The article strives for the enhancement of the efficiency of translation competence assessment in philologists' university training with the help of the triangulation method. It is deemed in the concurrent involvement of different assessment agents (teacher, peer and self) into integrated and collaborative translation performance evaluation from two perspectives, i.e. translation product quality and process workflow, with the use of diversified methods based on different theoretical approaches. This research aims at the study of students' video screen recording contribution combined with think-aloud protocols (TAPs) to increase the assessment objectivity and reliability of the received translation product. Method: A mixed research design was developed and implemented. It involved 40 third-year university students majoring in Philology, who were asked to perform a written translation of the excerpt of English popular science article in Marketing (c. 250 words) into Ukrainian in MS Word using any reference sources at hand, video record the process of their translation and accompany it with their comments. The research was completed with the questionnaire on students' attitude to the screen recording and TAP involvement into translation task performance and assessment. Findings: The findings of this study reported on the positive impact of screen recording on the assessment accuracy, informative value of the collected data and formative effect of triangulated assessment method on students' translation competence acquisition. Implications for research and practice: The received results can serve for the optimisation of the procedures of translation task difficulty measurement and competence assessment in the translation classroom.

The concept of Theme is regarded as a functional linguistic element that exists in many languages. The main aim of this study is to explore the functions of Theme in Arabic, applying the Systemic Functional Linguistics framework adopted by Downing (1991). Methodologically, several related real examples have been selected from the written discourse of Modern Standard Arabic and then analyzed contextually. The empirical analysis has revealed that (i) Theme can provide different functions, such as Individual, Circumstantial and Subjective and Logical Frameworks for the interpretation of the Theme, and (ii) Theme can interact dynamically with different grammatical functions (e.g. Subject, Object, etc.) and have different pragmatic functions (e.g. Topic, Given and New information). Therefore, the view that makes a necessary link between Theme on the one hand and Noun Phrase, Topic or Given information on the other hand is proven incorrect and empirically invalid. Similar results have been obtained in the context of English (Downing 1991) but not yet for Arabic? This strengthens not only the universality of the concept of Theme but also its functions.

Awareness of the career to be pursued can be present as early as childhood and can vary according to knowledge and interest. Most of today's children are more focused on achieving excellence in education, but still vague in the career that will be pursued. This situation persisted when they continued their studies at higher education and they realized that the choice of field of study was not in line with their ambitions. Usually, these children choose a field based on their results rather than settling for the required degree for the field of interest. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the extent of students' understanding of the scope and career prospects in Malay language. Students were distributed with a set of questionnaires containing 54 items using ordinal scales of semantic difference types. The findings of the study showed that 34(56.7%) of the students studied chose this field of study as the main choice. Students also showed a high level of knowledge about careers in the Malay language which they studied (M=3.92; SD=0.57). Students have also listed a total of 14 careers in the field of Malay language they are familiar with.

Suicide notes are messages left by individuals who commit suicide or who intend to commit suicide. These written messages express the victims' feelings that were not expressed when they were alive. And thus, this qualitative study intends to investigate the characteristics of linguistic features of suicide notes written by eleven male well-known individuals. The approach to this study is qualitative content analysis. Data were obtained from suicide notes written by eleven male well-known individuals. These notes were retrievable online. The researchers read, classified, and described the data based on the five characteristics of linguistic features of suicide notes, they are clear reasoning, expressing emotion, structure text, grammar, punctuation. The results showed that all of the characteristics of linguistic features were found in the well-known individuals' suicide notes. The characteristics of clear reasoning took place as the most frequent one to occur since it tells the readers of the victims' point of view about the problems that they were facing that led them to suicide. While the absence of doubt and form of address took place as rare. In the end, the result of this research can provide more information in research regarding the study of suicide notes in forensic linguistics, an application of linguistic on analyzing data or legal issues.

Language, procedure, and identity are L2 teaching/learning essentials that may promote agency and stimulate synergies among knowledge, practice, and reflection (Diaz Maggioli, 2014; Duff, 2012). This meta-report presents three studies that collectively advance agency and endorse linguistic foundations as enrichment, differentiated instruction as engagement, and teacher identity as empowerment. All of these theoretical constructs are key to successful L2 teaching and acquisition. Study 1 quantitatively reports on introductory linguistics' presence or absence in 114 master's programs at 54 US institutions. Findings suggest that linguistics' curricular presence is inconsistent and training for optimal impact in the L2 classroom is lacking. Given the discipline's fundamental role in teachers' understanding of language development, grammatical structures, and sociolinguistic contexts (Lucas, Villegas, & Freedson-Gonzalez, 2008), such lapses offer insufficient pedagogic tools and impair the ability to address English learners' (ELs) needs. Study 2 profiles differentiated instruction in integrated classrooms to develop Caribbean Creole ELs' academic writing and language skills. Findings demonstrate that scaffolding academic language and linguistic interventions within pedagogical frameworks with socially-conscious strategies benefit ELs (Salvatori & Donahue, 2012). This study argues differentiated instruction is essential to L2 formal register acquisition and academic success, particularly for urban STEM students. Study 3 qualitatively investigates the use of reflective practices by urban STEM teachers completing an additional ESL Endorsement. Drawing from a combined perspective of identity-in-discourse (Fairclough, 2003) and identity-in-practice (Varghese, Morgan, Johnston, & Johnson, 2005), the study explores how reflective practices embedded in a field experience/practicum impact the professional identity of in-service STEM teachers.

This study aims to assess the evidence regarding the relationship between previous and new schools of linguistics. According to Kuhn (1970), old linguistic paradigms incorporate vocabulary and apparatus from previous or traditional paradigms. In particular, this review addresses the Question: Do new paradigms in linguistic arise from old or previous ones, as Kuhn suggested? The study is significant in understanding emerging schools of linguistics based on previous ones. A qualitative literature review was applied to compare new and old schools of linguistics. According to the findings, there is substantial evidence that functionalism, structuralism, and Transformational-Generative Grammar support Kuhn's argument. Most notably, the changes of the transformational-generative grammar from a consistent and straightforward Standard Theory to an improved Extended Standard Theory, and finally, to the Minimalist Program, point towards the same conclusion. Interestingly, the transformations demonstrate how new paradigms arise from old paradigms without borrowing many concepts, terms, and experiments from them. This study draws the attention of linguists in the 21st Century to pay closer attention to the trends in schools of linguistics.

To assess scientific progress from global to author levels, a large body of bibliometric studies could be found in many fields but relatively scarcer in the realm of language and linguistic studies, especially at a journal level. Motivated by the commitment and competence shown by the Journal of Language and Linguistic Studies, this study presents its bibliometric portrait as captured by two pieces of software, Publish or Perish and VoSviewer. from the Microsoft Academic, one of the global abstract and citation databases. The descriptive and network analyses of the journal's bibliometric data revealed the patterns of publication, citation, authorship, keyword co-occurrence, and bibliographic coupling from 2005 to 2019. The first 15 publication years have seen 482 articles by 552 authors from 142 organizations of which Turkish ones were in the majority contributing to 1,291 total citations along with regional and global indexations including in Scopus, one of the largest bibliographic databases. Evolving around the unity of psychology, linguistics, and education/ pedagogy viewed from different perspectives, the journal has been a scholarly outlet for not only local but also global issues in the realm of language and linguistics. The next 15-publication years will see the journal's growth in "internationality" in terms of authorship due to the combination of increased annual publication and recent international indexation.

Starting from its first implementation, Subject Knowledge Test (henceforward SKT) has been investigated in various subject fields due to the emerging questions about its content and applicability in selecting prospective teachers. With the contribution of 355 participants including senior students and the graduates from different ELT undergraduate programs of the universities throughout Turkey, this study aimed to investigate the conceptions and suggestions of prospective ELT teachers on the new distribution of the subjects and topics in SKT in 2019. The data were collected by conducting an online survey and semi-structured interviews held with ten ELT prospective teachers. The study revealed that the new distribution of the subjects and topics in SKT was not satisfactory and relevant to select ELT prospective teachers who are competent and qualified in their fields due to substantial obliqueness in its content and administration process.

This study explores the ways in which master thesis writers position their research in the field of English language teaching in a context where academic literacies are still a developing field. From a social semiotic perspective, this paper aims to identify the resources writers use to represent their object of study and provide a context and justification for research. The analysis focuses on the ideational and textual metafunctions to account for patterns of meanings in seven introductory chapters of master theses in English teacher education. The results reveal a set of interconnected genres--descriptions of the object of study, definitions, and personal exemplum--that build a shared experience with the reader as well as the persuasive purpose of the text.

Multi-word combinations are crucial for the production of various discourse types as well as for the construction of a credible and persuasive academic persona. This study investigates the frequency, structure, and function of the most frequently occurring 4-lexical bundles in writings from the field of linguistics. Following Biber et al.'s (1999) corpus driven-approach, a total of 87 and 113 of lexical bundles were identified in expert and student writing, respectively. Findings revealed substantial differences in the frequency distribution of lexical bundles across the structural categories. More precisely, the study indicated that the student cohort relied heavily on clausal bundles. Expert writers, on the other hand, showed increased use of phrasal bundles, which are considered indicative of proficient academic writing. In terms of function, the analysis showed a preferential attachment to certain lexical bundle functions, with text-oriented bundles occurring significantly in student writing as opposed to research-oriented bundles which were predominantly used in expert writing. These functional differences also suggest diachronic changes in experts' use of these word sequences due to the discipline's discursive demands.

Cohesive speech has commonly become regarded as one of the essential aspects of language development, especially for pre-schoolers. This study aimed to shed light on the cohesive speech of pre-schoolers (CSP) knowledge base. Three hundred ninety-five publications close related cohesive speech research of 5-6-year-old children were collected from the Scopus database. By using the bibliometric approach, the results showed the growth rate of publications over time from 1970 to 2020. In this period, the top five countries, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil and France, have published over 60% of total documents. Besides, four main interests of authors in this field were discovered: "language development", "speech pathology outcomes", "speech therapy", "language intervention". Among these themes, "speech pathology outcomes" was the most relevant one. Another finding, in recent years, scholars focused on aspects of autism spectrum disorder of pre-schoolers. More importantly, the achievements of this discipline have considerably made positive contributions to various fields both in terms of theory and practice, especially in language and linguistics, speech and hearing, psychology, and medicine. Overall, these studies highlight the need for many other studies, particularly relevant to pre-schooling when new generations should be better prepared to be happy in school by their future cognitive developments.

Due to intercontinental connections provided by air and shipping, tourism, freight transfer, flexibility and expanding labor mobility, expanding the potential of human capital, the borders between states and their societies have been erased, and the international cultural society has become more diverse. The relevance of this study is conditioned by the activities of the centres established in the European Union for transcultural education, transdisciplinary research in the field of sociology, etc. One of the key features of their activities is the understanding of the concept of ethnicity as defining for these centers. The purpose of the study was to investigate the conceptual activities of European centres of transcultural education, to clarify the features of ethnolinguistic science as the main background for the establishment and development of the study of the phenomenon of ethnicity in general. The leading approach to research has become the gradual application of a complex of interrelated methods, such as collection and processing of factual research material, description and analysis of dictionary entries, analysis of the concepts of the activities of European centers, etc. The object of the study is the structural components of the concept of ethnicity. The study identified the principles of functioning of European centres for transcultural education in the context of introducing the experience of educational centres for integration, adaptation, and development of the national identity of immigrants.

The present study examines the ways Chinese high school EFL learners organize information in their writing. A class of 50 students at grade 9 from a local high school in Guangzhou, China, were recruited as participants. The students' writing at grade 9 was collected as a corpus, comprising ten writing tasks from different text types. In order to gain a holistic understanding of the organization of information in student writing, the analytical framework of Theme at three levels -- that is, clause, paragraph, and text -- from Derewianka and Jones (2010) was adopted. Findings show that the students have varying degrees of control over information organization at different levels. In particular, the students are not proficient in organizing information at the paragraph level. Findings also show that registerial differences affect the organization of information. The study provides relevant pedagogical implications and recommendations for this group of learners.

This article opens a conversation between disability studies and linguistics from the author's positionality from the Global South. It argues that capacity building for both the abled and disabled in the North is implicated in the disablement of people in the Global South. A decolonial orientation to disability studies values vulnerability, relationality, and ethics which are less privileged in the academy. The article demonstrates how such a crip linguistics might facilitate a different understanding of language competence and analysis. Bringing out the ableism in dominant models of language competence, the article illustrates how linguistics might conceive communication as anomalous embodiment. Such an orientation will move from grammatical norms to nonnormativity, and diversity to multiplicity, as speakers engage with social networks and material ecologies for generating meanings in distributed practice motivated by relational ethics.

The initial response to COVID-19 exposed widespread racism and Sinophobia across the world, which contributed to a rethinking of equality and diversity in Higher Education (HE) and beyond. Within Modern Languages, much attention has been placed on decolonising the curriculum. The death of George Floyd in 2020 further contributed to an increased awareness of the need to rethink racism and challenge current practice within the curriculum. This paper re-examines the findings of a doctoral study exploring students' development of Intercultural Competence (IC) and criticality in Modern Languages with the aim of revisiting ways in which students' intercultural development can be defined and fostered in Higher Education.

Amidst the paradigm shift to the digitalization of teaching and learning post COVID-19, the conceptualized effectiveness of online interactions as facets of immediate and delayed learning among learners and teachers seems to provide solutions to the absence of face-to-face interaction. This action research study investigated the effects of critical reflection on the enhancement of interactivity among students in online courses after being engaged in different weekly reflective and critical asynchronous discussions on Blackboard. The study used a classroom cyclic action-research approach to enhance students' critical reflection over a period of three months. Participants were 49 male and female Bahraini undergraduates majoring in English Language and Literature. Findings revealed that engaging students in critical reflective discussions enhanced their interactivity in the discussion boards and lessened communication apprehension. Students' preferences for teaching and learning methods changed to supporting the use of online critical reflective discussions. The findings support the integration of critical reflective discussions in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning contexts and suggest useful implications for educators and decision-makers in Bahrain and in the wider region.

Embedded in a Systemic Functional understanding of education as an initiation into knowledge structures and specific activities, both of which are fundamentally mediated by language, this paper addresses one of the critical concerns around CLIL: a possible mismatch between students' cognitive level and their L2 proficiency. The focus is on acts of classifying, comparing and contrasting facts, objects, phenomena, abstract ideas and concepts. Such cognitive and verbal actions are key in the construction of specialist knowledge, having been bundled in an umbrella cognitive discourse function (CDF) categorize. To operationalize this CDF, we develop a conceptual map through an exploratory, data-driven analysis of an oral learner corpus in L2 English and L1 Spanish on science and history topics collected in primary bilingual schools in Madrid. We also use SFL tools to examine lexico-grammatical choices which students employ to realize categorize across the two subjects and languages. The analysis shows that students encounter a range of difficulties, both conceptual and linguistic, when forming complete and appropriate categorizations in both languages. The results obtained across subjects reveal clear subject-specific tendencies in how categorizing is carried out: comparing seems to be a defining figure of thought in history while classifications were predominant in science.

The construct of cognitive discourse functions (CDFs) has been proposed as a bridge between linguists and educationalists, linking 'subject specific cognitive learning goals with the linguistic representations they receive in classroom interaction' (Dalton-Puffer 2013. "A Construct of Cognitive Discourse Functions for Conceptualising Content-Language Integration in Q4 CLIL Multilingual Education." EuJAL 1 (2): 216-253, 220). We focus on the CDF evaluate, using the Appraisal model to analyze evaluative language in a longitudinal corpus of student texts written in L2 English across disciplines (natural science, history, art), collected from the same students at the end of primary school (aged 11+) and at the beginning and end of secondary year 2 (aged 13-14). We trace students' control of meaning-making resources for the CDF evaluate across disciplines and over time through their ability to 'couple' interpersonal, or evaluative, meanings with their ideational, or field-specific knowledge. The findings show some development towards appropriate field + evaluation couplings, and suggest ways teachers can focus students' attention on the language of evaluation across disciplines, aiding development of cognitive discourse competence. Our study further supports the contributions of Systemic Functional Linguistics to educational contexts, as the Appraisal framework discriminates types of evaluation for creating disciplinary knowledge.
