Abstract

Proteins and peptides present within clinical samples represent a valuable library of information regarding the ongoing processes within cells and tissues in health and disease. We have developed and validated novel technology applications that can be used to characterize the patterns of global protein expression in tissue and biofluids in either gel-based systems or by automated multidimensional nanocapillary liquid chromatography. Mass spectrophotometry platforms using MALDI MS and MS/MS or LTQ ion trap MS were capable of delivering sensitive and accurate identifications of hundreds of proteins contained in individual samples including individual forms of processing intermediates such as phospho peptides. The Systems Biology approach of integrating protein expression data with clinical data such as histopathology, clinical functional measurements, medical imaging scores, patient demographics, and clinical outcome provides a powerful tool for linking biomarker expression with biological processes that can be segmented and linked to disease presentation. 116. An empirical study of the effect of heterogeneous within-groups variance upon certain F-tests of significance in analysis of variance.

Abstract

In the application of the analysis of variance to data obtained in educational methods experiments which involve several classes of several schools, one assumption is that of homogeneity in the variances of pupil scores from school to school. It is shown that such variances on representative educational achievement tests are heterogeneous. The effects of this heterogeneity upon the F-tests of significance commonly employed in methods experiments are investigated by comparing the actual distribution of F values for a large number of 'experiments' involving marked heterogeneity with a theoretical distribution based on the assumption of homogeneity. Although the findings, which vary somewhat with the type of variance ratio, are not entirely conclusive, they apparently demonstrate that departure from homogeneity does not invalidate the use of the customary F-tests for evaluating results of the typical methods experiment. Abstract

This chapter discusses on the perspective of the educational measurement movement. Some of the most significant of recent developments in educational measurement have been neither the direct outgrowth nor the immediate object of experimental research. The developments are characterized as follows: Use of tests in educational guidance; Demand for increased comparability in the test results; Growth in the number and scope regional testing programs; and, successful attempts to measure current outcomes of educational practices. The chapter also discusses on the current criticisms, as well as the past and present trends in educational measurement. The determination of trends is a matter of judgment and interpretation.

Abstract

This article discusses the technical aspects of constructing educational tests. It shows the problem of defining a field of subject matter in which general achievements is to be measured, and the problem of selecting elements of that subject matter for the construction of items in a general achievements test. The items in a test do not by any means represent a random or representative sample of the content of the field in question. What a test may contain is very largely a function of what has been learned and what is the level and range of achievement in the group to be tested. The content of an achievement test, therefore, cannot be expected to parallel the course of study exactly, and such examinations can neither be used to check nor be checked by course of study outlines directly. The problem of selecting test items cannot be left to the subject matter expert or to the subjective judgment of anyone but is mainly a technical problem, and must be based upon objective facts secured from actual trials of large numbers of items with pupils of the kind to which the completed test is to be administered.

Abstract

Flechtmannus homalinotus, gen. nov., sp. nov. (Tarsonemidae : Tarsoneminae : Tarsonemini) is described from larvae, adult females and males collected under the elytra of Homalinotus coriaceus (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera : Curculionidae) from Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The phylogenetic relationships of Flechtmannus among other genera of Tarsonemidae are considered and the reduction of the prodorsal bothridial setae in adult females of this and other taxa of Tarsonemidae is discussed.

121. Correlation between an Embedded Figures Test and Tennis Rank Order at Three Levels of Skill

Abstract

To see if there were a significant relationship between the short form of Dees, O'Reilly, and Griffith embedded figures test and playing ability for tennis as measured by tournament rank order, setting the minimum correlation coefficient at .70, from 116 beginning, 37 advanced, and 72 intercollegiate male and female tennis students from 6 universities data were collected by 9 instructors. Spearman and Kendall rank-order correlations and partial correlation indicated that, even though several values were significant, most were not high enough to conclude that tennis players are field independent.

Abstract

AbstractThe trombidiid subfamily Neotrombidiinae Feider is re-established and redefined, based primarily on larval characters but also on adult characters. It is closely related to the trombidiid Trombellinae on the one hand and to the Leeuwenhoekidae on the other. It consists of two genera, namely MonunguisWharton, which is monobasic and known only from the larva, and NeotrombidiumLeonardi, with 13 described species of which 7 are known from the larva and 8 from the adult (the larva and adult of 2 species are correlated by rearings).The history of the family-level placement of this group, and the controversy over whether or not to recognize two genera, are reviewed. The characters that justify the separate recognition of Monunguisand Neotrombidiumare enumerated.The larva of each of the following species of Neotrombidiinae is described, illustrated and keyed: Monunguis streblidaWharton from the Caribbean area, Neotrombidium barringunenseHirst from Australia, N. tricuspidumBorland from North America, N. tenuipes(Womersley) from Malaya, N. samsinaki(Daniel) new combination from central Europe, N. anuroporumnew species from Central America, N. bengalensenew species from India, and N. tenebrionenew species from eastern North America. Abstract

Background The fungal genus Aspergillus is of critical importance to humankind. Species include those with industrial applications, important pathogens of humans, animals and crops, a source of potent carcinogenic contaminants of food, and an important genetic model. The genome sequences of eight aspergilli have already been explored to investigate aspects of fungal biology, raising questions about evolution and specialization within this genus. Results We have generated genome sequences for ten novel, highly diverse Aspergillus species and compared these in detail to sister and more distant genera. Comparative studies of key aspects of fungal biology, including primary and secondary metabolism, stress response, biomass degradation, and signal transduction, revealed both conservation and diversity among the species. Observed genomic differences were validated with experimental studies. This revealed several highlights, such as the potential for sex in asexual species, organic acid production genes being a key feature of black aspergilli, alternative approaches for degrading plant biomass, and indications for the genetic basis of stress response. A genome-wide phylogenetic analysis demonstrated in detail the relationship of the newly genome sequenced species with other aspergilli. Conclusions Many aspects of biological differences between fungal species cannot be explained by current knowledge obtained from genome sequences. The comparative genomics and experimental study, presented here, allows for the first time a genus-wide view of the biological diversity of the aspergilli and in many, but not all, cases linked genome differences to phenotype. Insights gained could be exploited for biotechnological and medical applications of fungi.

Abstract

This paper is the outcome of a community initiative to identify major unsolved scientific problems in hydrology motivated by a need for stronger harmonisation of research efforts. The procedure involved a public consultation through online media, followed by two workshops through which a large number of potential science questions were collated, prioritised, and synthesised. In spite of the diversity of the participants (230 scientists in total), the process revealed much about community priorities and the state of our science: a preference for continuity in research questions rather than radical departures or redirections from past and current work. Questions remain focused on the process-based understanding of hydrological variability and causality at all space and time scales. Increased attention to environmental change drives a new emphasis on understanding how change propagates across interfaces within the hydrological system and across disciplinary boundaries. In particular, the expansion of the human footprint raises a new set of questions related to human interactions with nature and water cycle feedbacks in the context of complex water management problems. We hope that this reflection and synthesis of the 23 unsolved problems in hydrology will help guide research efforts for some years to come.

Abstract

One of the most innovative components found in the 1991 Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) was the short-lived mandate requiring all 50 states to develop ISTEA Management System plans for six management systems. ISTEA legislation states: "Not later than 1 year after the date of the enactment of this section, the Secretary shall issue regulations for State development, establishment, and implementation of a system for managing each of the following: highway pavement on the Federal-aid system, bridges on and off Federal-aid highways, highway safety, traffic congestion, public transportation facilities and equipment, and intermodal transportation facilities and systems." This mandate was one of the key provisions in ITSEA ad effective compliance in linking management system plans within each state was viewed as a way to reinforce the intermodal focus of ISTEA. The objective of the management system format is that, through system integration, it allows consideration of an entire network for the allocation of scarce resources for design, operations, planing, maintenance, and policy making. Beyond implementation, each management system was to include an evaluation process of the effectiveness of implemented strategies for use as feedback for future decision making. This report evaluated the effectiveness measures that were included in the management system work plans through an assessment of the federal rulemaking process and content analysis of a sample of the state DOT work plans. Findings suggest that little attention was paid to measures of effectiveness in both the rulemaking process and in the state work plans. Evaluation theory suggest that this may be the result of ambiguous program objectives as well as an unfamiliarity with program evaluation, in general.
