Abstract

The tuned mass damper (TMD) is widely used for vibration mitigation, especially in high-rise buildings where significant soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects are usually involved. This creates a need to consider SSI effects in TMD design. In this work, a novel design framework for TMD systems with SSI effects is proposed. For response evaluations, structure-TMD systems are modeled as a two-degrees-of-freedom (2DOF) system, standing on a rigid foundation and subject to out-of-plane SH seismic wave inputs in a homogeneous half-space. Closed-form analytical solutions of its displacement and acceleration responses are derived, and the H2-norm of the system transfer function is introduced to quantify the performances of TMDs. The TMD design problem is then formulated and solved by optimizing the performances. Considering that aspects other than response mitigation, e.g., strokes, damper device costs, etc., may be critical to TMD damping ratios, a design framework is developed by firstly making an informed selection on TMD damping ratios, and subsequently tuning TMD frequency ratios through calibrated formulae. In addition, TMD strokes versus TMD damping ratios are investigated to facilitate the determination of TMD damping ratios. A case study based on a real-existing building system is carried out to illustrate the application of the proposed design framework. Abstract

As the scale of wind farm continues to increase, the internal stability of wind farms and the distribution control strategy of wind turbines need to be further studied. Modeling is the basis of stability analysis. In order to solve the modeling problem, this paper proposes a wind farm modeling method based on vector variables. The core idea is to convert the complex model that contains plenty of wind generation units to a model consisting of one typical submodule, by constructing the block vector formed variables. In this way, the model has good scalability and high simulation efficiency, and can be realized by the vector simulation function of MATLAB/Simulink. In addition, linearization results can be easily and directly obtained by using Linearization Toolbox in Simulink, thus avoiding the complexity of writing programs for linearization calculations when studying the stability of large systems. Then, the simulation results are compared with the electromagnetic transient model to verify the correctness of the model. Time-domain simulation and linearization results verify the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract

This work proposes an electronic quality factor for an efficient guidance to thermoelectric advancements with demonstrations., Development of thermoelectrics usually involves trial-and-error investigations, including time-consuming synthesis and measurements. Here, we identify the electronic quality factor BE for determining the maximum thermoelectric power factor, which can be conveniently estimated by a single measurement of Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of only one sample, not necessarily optimized, at an arbitrary temperature. We demonstrate that thousands of experimental measurements in dozens of materials can all be described by a universal curve and a single material parameter BE for each class of materials. Furthermore, any deviation in BE with temperature or doping indicated new effects such as band convergence or additional scattering. This makes BE a powerful tool for evaluating and guiding the development of thermoelectrics. We demonstrate the power of BE to show both p-type GeTe alloys and n-type Mg3SbBi alloys as highly competitive materials, at near room temperature, to state-of-the-art Bi2Te3 alloys used in nearly all commercial applications.

Abstract

Im Laufe der vergangenen Jahre wurde umfangreicher Aufwand in die Forschung an leistungselektronischen Schaltungen und ihren Elementen investiert, um Leistung, elektrische Spannung und Taktfrequenz zu erhöhen und gleichzeitig das Bauvolumen und den Materialaufwand zu verringern. Es hat sich ein Optimierungswettlauf ergeben, bei dem Leistungshalbleiter die Schaltungen mit zuvor ungeahnten Frequenzen betreiben. Dabei wurde allerdings das Offensichtliche übersehen: leistungselektronische Schaltungen bestehen nicht nur aus Halbleitern, sondern auch aus passiven Komponenten, insbesondere Induktivitäten und Transformatoren. Die für die Auslegung von moderner Leistungselektronik obligatorische ganzheitliche Betrachtung einer Schaltung stößt derzeit an die Grenzen der physikalischen Beschreibungsmöglichkeiten für magnetische Komponenten, bspw. Induktivitäten. Die Beteiligung an der Forschung ist international extrem dünn und es mangelt an grundlegenden(!) Modellen zur Beschreibung des Zusammenhang zwischen magnetischen Feldstärken und Flussdichten. Dieser Mangel ist nicht überraschend: bei den üblichen Anwendungen von magnetischen Komponenten handelt es sich um Induktivitäten und Transformatoren. Bei beiden lassen sich starke Vereinfachungen treffen, insbesondere ist die räumliche Orientierung des Magnetfeldes zeitlich konstant. Die Bedingung zur Vereinfachung und die Beschränkung auf lediglich diese beiden Arten von Komponenten sind weder physikalisch bedingt, noch sind sie technisch sinnvoll. Es sind zahlreiche weitere Anwendungen mit magnetischen Feldern denkbar, welche in dieser Arbeit nur angerissen werden (siehe Abschnitt 1.5, S 49). Denn bevor Erfindungen mit magnetischen Aufbauten gemacht werden, bedarf es einer Theorie zur Beschreibung solcher. The high affinity immunoglobulin E receptor (Fc-epsilon-RI) gamma dimer acts as an activator of Syk tyrosine kinase while the beta subunit acts as an amplifier of the gamma subunit. A comparison of the signaling characteristics of different wild-type and mutant alpha-gamma-2 and alpha-beta-gamma-2 dimers of Fc-epsilon-RI determines the role of the beta subunit. Polymorphisms in the beta subunit result in the formation of allergic phenotypes.

Abstract

Vaccinia virus F10L gene encodes vaccinia protein kinase 2 (VPK2) with a 50-kDa polypeptide. The polypeptide phosphorylates alpha-casein, seryl residues and a casein kinase I-specific peptide substrate. VPK2 gene disruption using a positive selectable marker indicates that VPK2 is required for the activity of the virus. VPK2 gene mediates protein phosphorylation to modulate transcription elements.

Abstract

Over the past years, thermoelectric Mg3Sb2 alloys particularly in n-type conduction, have attracted increasing attentions for thermoelectric applications, due to the multivalley conduction band, abundance of constituents, and less toxicity. However, the high vapor pressure, causticity of Mg, and the high melting point of Mg3Sb2 tend to cause the inclusion in the materials of boundary phases and defects that affect the transport properties. In this work, a utilization of tantalum-sealing for melting enables n-type Mg3Sb2 alloys to show a substantially higher mobility than ever reported, which can be attributed to the purification of phases and to the coarse grains. Importantly, the inherently high mobility successfully enables the thermoelectric figure of merit in optimal compositions to be highly competitive to that of commercially available n-type Bi2Te3 alloys and to be higher than that of other known n-type thermoelectrics at 300-500 K. This work reveals Mg3Sb2 alloys as a top candidate for near-room-temperature thermoelectric applications.

Abstract

Ternary AgSbTe2 materials are frequently reported to show a promising thermoelectric performance, due to the intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity and complex valence band structure. However, stoichiometric AgSbTe2 is found to be thermodynamically unstable and would partially decompose into Ag2Te and Sb2Te3 during thermal cycling. Instead, Ag0.366Sb0.558Te is the composition for stabilizing the single‐phase according to the Ag2Te‐Sb2Te3 phase diagram, while the thermoelectric transport properties have rarely been reported and are the focus of this work. Sn/Sb substitution is found to effectively increase not only the carrier concentration from ≈5 × 1019 cm−3 to ≈4 × 1021 cm−3, but also the density‐of‐states effective mass, leading to an enhanced Seebeck coefficient along with a decreased carrier mobility. Single parabolic band (SPB) model with acoustic phonon scattering enables a good understanding on the charge transport. The increased carrier concentration effectively suppresses the bipolar effect at high temperatures. As a result, a peak zT of ≈1.3 and an average of ≈0.9 are achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
