In many schools, librarians play a key role in teaching information literacy and inquiry learning. From a survey of Colorado librarians, Keith Curry Lance and Leslie Maniotes learned that librarians who regularly facilitated student-led inquiry activities were also more likely to teach regularly a number of information literacy skills. Librarians who engage in inquiry learning said that support from school leaders and the autonomy to try new things were motivating factors in their inquiry efforts, but they wanted to be more intentional in their use of inquiry and to get more teachers on board. Lance and Maniotes turn to Norman, Oklahoma, for an example of how using a specific inquiry model, in this case Guided Inquiry Design, and providing training and support, can multiply the benefits of the inquiry approach.

OBJECTIVE:Although much empirical attention has been devoted to emotion regulation (ER) in individuals with eating disorders, little is known about ER across a wide age range and among different ED subtypes. The current study sought to examine ER in a sample of eating disorder patients. METHOD:A total of 364 adults and adolescents with anorexia nervosa restricting subtype (AN-R), anorexia nervosa binge/purge subtype (AN-BP), or bulimia nervosa (BN) were assessed with the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). RESULTS:Older ages were associated with higher DERS total, nonacceptance, goals, and impulsivity scores. When controlling for age, patients with BN and AN-BP had higher overall DERS scores than those with AN, and there were some differences among diagnostic subtypes on specific facets of ER. CONCLUSIONS:These results indicate that treatments for emotion dysregulation may be applied across eating disorder diagnoses and ages, and inform how these strategies apply to different diagnostic groups.

Predictors of genitourinary toxicity after post-prostatectomy radiotherapy remain elusive. A previously defined germline DNA signature (PROSTOX) has shown predictive ability for late grade ≥ 2 GU toxicity after intact prostate stereotactic body radiotherapy. We explore whether PROSTOX would predict toxicity among patients receiving post-prostatectomy SBRT on a phase II clinical trial.

Research supports that anorexia nervosa-restricting subtype (AN-R) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are associated with emotion regulation difficulties and alexithymia. However, the impact of diagnosis on the relationship between these constructs is less well understood. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether eating disorder diagnosis moderated the association between admission alexithymia and emotion regulation through discharge. Adult patients with AN-R (n = 54) and BN (n = 60) completed assessments at treatment admission and discharge from a partial hospital program. Eating disorder diagnosis moderated the association between admission alexithymia levels and change in global emotion dysregulation, impulse control difficulties and access to emotion regulation strategies. At higher levels of admission alexithymia, there were no differences between AN-R and BN on emotion dysregulation, whereas at lower levels of alexithymia, AN-R patients demonstrated lower levels of emotion dysregulation. Results imply that difficulties with alexithymia appear to have a greater impact on emotion dysregulation for AN-R patients. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and Eating Disorders Association.

Emotional eating is associated with obesity and disordered eating in adolescents, and thus, is an important target for treatment. We developed a program called PEER (Preventing Emotional Eating Routines), which incorporates emotion regulation skills with behavioral weight loss and parenting techniques for adolescents who are overweight or obese (OW/OB) and their parent. This open label trial evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of the PEER program. Thirty adolescents who were OW/OB (86.7% female; mean age = 14.6 years (SD = 1.2); Body Mass Index (BMI) = 34.0 kg/m2 (SD = 5.6); 33.3% White non-Hispanic) and their parent (66.7% biological mother) participated in a 4-month treatment and 3-month follow-up. The PEER program was well accepted. Initial efficacy showed significant decreases in emotional eating, and there were trends towards weight loss and a decrease in emotion dysregulation. This trial provides preliminary evidence for the feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of the PEER program among adolescents who are OW/OB and their parent. Further treatment development and randomized controlled studies are needed.

Abstract Background Evidence from previous studies suggests that women firefighters have greater risk of some adverse reproductive outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether women firefighters had greater risk of miscarriage compared to non-firefighters and whether there were occupational factors associated with risk of miscarriage among firefighters. Methods We studied pregnancies in the United States fire service using data from the Health and Wellness of Women Firefighters Study (n = 3181). We compared the prevalence of miscarriage among firefighters to published rates among non-firefighters using age-standardized prevalence ratios. We used generalized estimating equations to estimate relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) between occupational factors (employment (career/volunteer), wildland firefighter status (wildland or wildland-urban-interface/structural), shift schedule, fire/rescue calls at pregnancy start) and risk of miscarriage, adjusted for age at pregnancy, education, gravidity, BMI, and smoking. We evaluated if associations varied by age at pregnancy or employment. Results Among 1074 firefighters and 1864 total pregnancies, 404 pregnancies resulted in miscarriages (22%). Among most recent pregnancies, 138 resulted in miscarriage (13%). Compared to a study of US nurses, firefighters had 2.33 times greater age-standardized prevalence of miscarriage (95% CI 1.96–2.75). Altered interoceptive awareness (IA) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of eating disorders; however, few comprehensive self-report measures of IA exist in eating disorders. The present study sought to validate the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA), originally developed to assess IA in individuals practicing mind-body therapies, in an eating disorder sample. Adult and adolescent patients (n = 376) completed assessments upon admission to a partial hospital programme. Analyses examined the factor structure of the MAIA, scale means, scale-scale correlations, internal consistency and construct validity. Analyses also examined associations between MAIA subscales and eating disorder symptoms. Results supported the original eight-factor structure of the MAIA. Internal consistency was acceptable, and the scales converged with associated measures. Importantly, Not Distracting, Self-regulation, Body Listening and Trusting were most strongly associated with eating disorder symptoms. Results support use of the MAIA among eating disorders and provide further support for the relevance of IA in eating disorders. This study tested an integrated package for high-quality school mental health (SMH) services involving quality assessment and improvement, family engagement and empowerment, modular evidence-based practice, and implementation support. Within a two-year randomized controlled trial, 35 clinicians, who provided services to 529 students and their families, were randomly assigned to the enhanced quality assessment and improvement intervention condition and a comparison condition focused on promoting personal and staff wellness. Significant clinician-level findings were found for increased use and fidelity of evidence-based practices and greater use of structured assessments and sessions involving family members. Results are discussed in relation to needed methodological improvements in SMH treatment outcome research and increasing use of evidence-based practices by clinicians by adding accountability and incentives to training, coaching, and implementation support.

This study employs physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to reconstruct multiple flow fields in a transient natural convection system solely based on instantaneous temperature data at an arbitrary moment. Transient convection problems present reconstruction challenges due to the temporal variability of fields across different flow phases. In general, large reconstruction errors are observed during the incipient phase, while the quasi-steady phase exhibits relatively smaller errors, reduced by a factor of 2–4. We hypothesize that reconstruction errors vary across different flow phases due to the changing solution space of a PINN, inferred from the temporal gradients of the fields. Furthermore, we find that reconstruction errors tend to accumulate in regions where the spatial gradients are smaller than the order of 10−6, likely due to the vanishing gradient phenomenon. In convection phenomena, field variations often manifest across multiple scales in space. However, PINN-based reconstruction tends to preserve larger-scale variations, while smaller-scale variations become less pronounced due to the vanishing gradient problem. To mitigate the errors associated with vanishing gradients, we introduce a multi-scale approach that determines scaling constants for the PINN inputs and reformulates inputs across multiple scales. This approach improves the maximum and mean errors by 72.2% and 6.4%, respectively. Biofouling in membrane filtration systems poses significant operational challenges, leading to decreased permeate flux. The aim of this work was to study the anti-biofilm properties of new nanofiltration membranes produced via layer-by-layer, LBL, assembly by coating a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) support with a polyethylenimine (PEI) and poly(acrylic acid)/graphene oxide (PAA-GO) mixture. The membranes were characterized according to contact angle, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy and their Z-potential. Biofilm quantification and characterization were carried out using crystal violet staining and SEM, while bacterial viability was assessed by using colony-forming units. The membrane with three bilayers ((PAA-PEI)3/PVDF) showed a roughness of 77.78 nm. The incorporation of GO ((GO/PAA-PEI)3/PVDF) produced a membrane with a smoother surface (roughness of 26.92 nm) and showed salt rejections of 16% and 68% for NaCl and Na2SO4, respectively. A significant reduction, ranging from 82.37 to 77.30%, in biofilm formation produced by S. aureus and E. coli were observed on modified membranes. Additionally, the bacterial viability on the modified membranes was markedly reduced (67.42–99.98%). Our results show that the modified membranes exhibited both antibiofilm and antimicrobial capacities, suggesting that these properties mainly depend on the properties of the modifying agents, as the initial adherence on the membrane surface was not totally suppressed, but the proliferation and formation of EPSs were prevented. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive respiratory illness characterized by long-standing respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation. It is a major contributor to respiratory disease-related deaths and currently ranked as the sixth leading cause of mortality in the United States. Approved pharmacological therapies for the stable disease primarily consist of inhaled short and long-acting bronchodilators, inhaled corticosteroids, azithromycin, and roflumilast. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the management of COPD through the identification of different COPD phenotypes and endotypes, which allows for a more personalized treatment approach. While earlier studies investigating targeted therapies were less promising, recent data on drugs targeting type 2 inflammatory pathways have shown promising results in carefully selected patients. In this article, we will review the available data on targeted therapies as well as the ongoing clinical studies of novel targeted therapies for COPD. Understanding and implementing these advancements hold promise for improving outcomes and quality of life for individuals living with COPD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

How are powerful interest groups with a stake in the status quo overcome? Policymakers succeed in enacting policies against the preferences of powerful vested interests when they delegate the costs associated with challenging those vested interests to advocacy groups. Advocacy groups can provide information and capacity, freeing allied policymakers from relying on vested interests. Using a 50‐state regression analysis of teacher evaluation policymaking in 2010 and 2011 and case studies of the experiences of Minnesota and Wisconsin, I find evidence that where advocacy groups assist policymaker allies, they can successfully pass and implement policy change against the preferences of powerful vested interests. ABSTRACT Introduction In surgical series of muscle‐invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), women have higher recurrence rates, disease progression, and mortality following radical cystectomy than men. Similar reports of oncologic differences between men and women following trimodality therapy (TMT) are rare. Our hypothesis was that there would be no difference in overall survival (OS) between sexes receiving TMT. Methods We queried the National Cancer Database (NCDB) for patients diagnosed with clinical stage T2‐T4aN0 M0 MIBC between 2004–2016. We considered patients to have received TMT if they received 55 Gy in 20 fractions or 59.4–70.2 Gy of radiotherapy with concurrent chemotherapy following a transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT). We used multivariable Cox proportional hazard models to determine whether sex was associated with risk of mortality. In addition to OS, we calculated relative survival (RS) to adjust for the fact that females generally survive longer than males. Results Of the patients, 1960 underwent TMT and had survival data. Less than one quarter were female. In the first year following treatment, women had worse OS and RS than men (p = 0.093 and p = 0.030, respectively). However, overall and relative survival differences between sexes were not statistically significantly different in Years 2 and later. BackgroundPrior studies have shown poor recruitment and retention of minoritized groups in clinical trials.ObjectiveTo examine several social determinants as predictors of consent to participate and retention as part of a prospective, longitudinal cohort study of children 8–16 with either mild traumatic brain injury (mild TBI) or orthopedic injury (OI).MethodsChildren and families were recruited during acute visits to emergency departments (ED) in two large children's hospitals in the midwestern United States for a prospective, longitudinal cohort study of children 8–16 with either mild TBI or OI.ResultsA total of 588 (mild TBI = 307; OI = 281) eligible children were approached in the ED and 315 (mild TBI = 195; OI = 120) were consented. Children who consented did not differ significantly from those who did not consent in sex or age. Consent rates were higher among Black (60.9%) and multi-racial (76.3%) children than white (45.3%) children. Among the 315 children who consented, 217 returned for a post-acute assessment (mild TBI = 143; OI = 74), a retention rate of 68.9%. Participants who were multi-racial (96.6%) or white (79.8%) were more likely to return for the post-acute visit than those who were Black (54.3%).ConclusionsRacial differences exist in both recruitment and retention of participants in a prospective, longitudinal cohort of children with mild TBI or OI. Further work is needed to understand these differences to ensure equitable participation of minoritized groups in brain injury research.
