106. Numerical simulations of transitional and particle-laden viscoelastic flows

Abstract

The foundation for fully resolved simulations of particle-laden viscoelastic flows is presented, with detailed assessment of its various elements. The predictive capability of the viscoelastic algorithm is demonstrated in a detailed study of natural transition to turbulence in channel flow. The computations start from infinitesimally small Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) waves and track the development of the instability from the early linear stages through nonlinear amplification, secondary instability and full breakdown to turbulence. At low elasticity, the primary TS wave is more unstable than the Newtonian counterpart, and its secondary instability involves the generation of Λ-structures which are narrower in the span. As elasticity increases, the growth rate of the primary TS wave is weaker than the Newtonian value, and the spanwise size of the secondary instability becomes wider, with weaker ejection and without hairpin packets. All viscoelastic flows considered finally reach a drag-reduced turbulent state via different routes to breakdown to turbulence. Notably, at high elasticity, streamwise elongated streaks are formed and break down to turbulence via secondary instability rather than cascading hairpin packets. With the viscoelastic algorithm established, the focus is shifted to particle-laden configurations. An immersed boundary method is adopted, where the particle geometry does not conform to the grid. However, all flow scales related to the motion of particle are resolved. The no-slip condition is enforced via momentum forcing and mass conservation is ensured by introducing a mass source term. An iterative force evaluation is derived for semi-implicit discretisations of the Navier-Stokes equations, which reduces the diffusive errors near the immersed boundary. As for inter-particle interactions, the immersed boundary method is complemented with two mechanical models: a soft-sphere or repulsive potential models for particle collision and, for Newtonian fluids, a lubrication model that captures the unresolved approaching motion prior and after the collision. A number of flow simulations are presented to assess the performance of the numerical algorithm.

Abstract

Conventional cell spheroid production methods are largely manual, leading to variations in size and shape that compromise consistency and reliability for use in cell-based therapeutic applications. To enhance spheroid production, a spherical shell bioprinting system was implemented, enabling the high-throughput generation of uniform cell spheroids with precisely controlled sizes. The system encapsulates cells within thin alginate hydrogel shells formed through bioprinting and ion crosslinking reactions. Alginate–calcium ion crosslinking created alginate shells that contained gelatin-based bioinks with embedded cells, facilitating spontaneous cell aggregation within the shells and eliminating the need for plastic wells. By adjusting cell concentrations in the alginate–gelatin bioink, we achieved precise control over spheroid size, maintaining a sphericity above 0.94 and size deviations within ±10 µm. This method has been successfully applied to various cell types including cancer cells, fibroblasts, chondrocytes, and epithelial cells, demonstrating its versatility. Abstract

We have examined quantum theories of electric magnetic duality invariant vector fields enjoying classical conformal invariance in 4-dimensional flat spacetime. We extend Dirac's argument about "the conditions for a quantum field theory to be relativistic" to "those for a quantum theory to be conformal". Abstract

We obtain new presentations for the imprimitive complex reflection groups of type $(de,e,r)$ and their braid groups $B(de,e,r)$ for $d,r \ge 2$. Diagrams for these presentations are proposed. The presentations have much in common with Coxeter presentations of real reflection groups. They are positive and homogeneous, and give rise to quasi-Garside structures. Diagram automorphisms correspond to group automorphisms. The new presentation shows how the braid group $B(de,e,r)$ is a semidirect product of the braid group of affine type $\widetilde A_{r-1}$ and an infinite cyclic group. Elements of $B(de,e,r)$ are visualized as geometric braids on $r+1$ strings whose first string is pure and whose winding number is a multiple of $e$. We classify periodic elements, and show that the roots are unique up to conjugacy and that the braid group $B(de,e,r)$ is strongly translation discrete., Comment: published version
