By introducing a thin non-stoichiometric CeO2-x switching layer between the high oxygen affinity metal TaN top electrode and the TiO2 layer in a TaN/CeO2-x/TiO2/Pt bilayer (BL) device, it is possible to enhance the endurance characteristics and overcome the reliability issue. Compared with a single layer device, a BL device significantly enhances the number of direct current overswitching cycles to >1.2 × 104, non-destructive retention (>104 s), and switching uniformity. A TaON interface layer is formed which served as a reservoir of oxygen ions (O2−) in the SET-process and acts as an O2− supplier to refill the oxygen vacancies in the RESET-process and so plays a key role in the formation and rupture of conductive filaments. This study demonstrates that simply introducing a thin non-stoichiometric CeO2-x switching layer into TiO2-based devices can facilitate the enhancement of the endurance property for future nonvolatile memory applications. In this letter, we report the coexistence of unipolar and bipolar switching in a solution-based nanocrystalline spinel ferrite ZnFe2O4 thin film prepared by the sol-gel method. It is seen that the Au/ZnFe2O4/Pt device could be activated between unipolar and bipolar switching modes just by choosing RESET-voltage polarity. Conversions between unipolar to bipolar switching modes are reversible and controllable. The results show that the SET-voltage of unipolar switching is smaller than that of bipolar switching, while memory windows (ON/OFF ratio) are identical. Furthermore, filaments are induced by the migration of oxygen vacancies (VOs), which are responsible for reducing variations in SET voltages of unipolar switching. By analyzing the current transport conduction mechanism, the electrode-limited Schottky emission mechanism is dominated in the high field region. Temperature dependence of low and high resistance states indicates that conductive filaments are composed of VOs and metallic Zn atoms, involving Joule heating and electrochemical redox reaction effects. Investigation on coexisting both unipolar and bipolar switching modes in a single Au/ZnFe2O4/Pt memory cell would open a pathway for spinel ferrite based low-cost nonvolatile memory. The subcellular localization of vitamin E in the membranes of single, isolated neurons from a widely studied neurobiological model, Aplysia californica is studied using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). The concentration of vitamin E in the junction region between the cell soma and the low levels in the neurite itself is a new finding that is consistent with several reported roles of the molecule.

The influence of deuterium sintering on improving the reliability of complementary metal oxide semiconductor transistors with nitride sidewall spacers is studied. Comparison of electrical measurements and SIMS depth profiles suggest that the lifetime improvement of wafers with deuterium sintering at the Metal-1 and Metal-4 steps is directly related to the amount of deuterium present at the oxide/silicon interface.

Drawing on various studies, we provide a holistic view incorporating different nested cultural contexts, organizational shame, and health outcomes. We introduce the concept of organizational shame and explain its two key domains: conformity and status/competition. Then, we comprehensively review prior studies on cultural approaches to shame and propose our cultural variance model of organizational shame. Our model illustrates an equilibrium, exhibiting dominant and stable patterns of shame domains formed by reinforcing relationships among three key nested contextual layers: individuals (workers), organizations (firms), and the labor market. We apply our model to discuss general and occupational implications and outline future research directions. Memory devices with bilayer CeO2−x/ZnO and ZnO/CeO2−x heterostructures sandwiched between Ti top and Pt bottom electrodes were fabricated by RF-magnetron sputtering at room temperature. N-type semiconductor materials were used in both device heterostructures, but interestingly, change in heterostructure and electroforming polarity caused significant variations in resistive switching (RS) properties. Results have revealed that the electroforming polarity has great influence on both CeO2−x/ZnO and ZnO/CeO2−x heterostructure performance such as electroforming voltage, good switching cycle-to-cycle endurance (~ 102), and ON/OFF ratio. A device with CeO2−x/ZnO heterostructure reveals good RS performance due to the formation of Schottky barrier at top and bottom interfaces. Dominant conduction mechanism of high resistance state (HRS) was Schottky emission in high field region. Nature of the temperature dependence of low resistance state and HRS confirmed that RS is caused by the formation and rupture of conductive filaments composed of oxygen vacancies. The threshold energy barrier for hydrogen desorption from the SiO[sub 2]-Si interface has been assumed to be the Si-H bond energy with the value of 3.6 eV. Based on the uniform Si-H bond energy and diffusion-limited degradation, the time-dependent hot-carrier degradation of metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) devices has been described by the so-called power law. In this letter, by investigating the degradation of submicron n-channel MOS devices at various stress conditions and over a large time scale (0.01-10000 s), we present experimental evidence that contradicts the uniform bond energy theory and supports the bond energy variation theory proposed recently by Hess and co-workers [Appl. Phys. Lett. 75, 3147 (1999); Physica B 272, 527 (1999)]. We find that, instead of a constant power factor of n=0.5 predicted by the uniform bond/diffusion-limited energy theory, n varies from ∼0.8 at the initial stress stage to ∼0.2 at the final stress stage consistent with the bond energy variation theory. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. Noonan syndrome (NS) is a genetic disorder mainly caused by gain-of-function mutations in Src homology region 2-containing protein tyrosine phosphatase 2 (SHP2). Although diverse neurological manifestations are commonly diagnosed in NS patients, the mechanisms as to how SHP2 mutations induce the neurodevelopmental defects associated with NS remain elusive. Here, we report that cortical organoids (NS-COs) derived from NS-induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) exhibit developmental abnormalities, especially in excitatory neurons (ENs). Although NS-COs develop normally in their appearance, single-cell transcriptomic analysis revealed an increase in the EN population and overexpression of cortical layer markers in NS-COs. Surprisingly, the EN subpopulation co-expressing the upper layer marker SATB2 and the deep layer maker CTIP2 was enriched in NS-COs during cortical development. In parallel with the developmental disruptions, NS-COs also exhibited reduced synaptic connectivity. Collectively, our findings suggest that perturbed cortical layer identity and impeded neuronal connectivity contribute to the neurological manifestations of NS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) regulates cellular processes by deacetylating non-histone targets, including transcription factors and intracellular signalling mediators; thus, its abnormal activation is closely linked to the pathophysiology of several diseases. However, its function in Toxoplasma gondii infection is unclear. We found that SIRT1 contributes to autophagy activation via the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and PI3K/AKT signalling pathways, promoting anti-Toxoplasma responses. Myeloid-specific Sirt1−/− mice exhibited an increased cyst burden in brain tissue compared to wild-type mice following infection with the avirulent ME49 strain. Consistently, the intracellular survival of T. gondii was markedly increased in Sirt1-deficient bone-marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs). In contrast, the activation of SIRT1 by resveratrol resulted in not only the induction of autophagy but also a significantly increased anti-Toxoplasma effect. Notably, SIRT1 regulates the FoxO-autophagy axis in several human diseases. Importantly, the T. gondii-induced phosphorylation, acetylation, and cytosolic translocation of FoxO1 was enhanced in Sirt1-deficient BMDMs and the pharmacological inhibition of PI3K/AKT signalling reduced the cytosolic translocation of FoxO1 in BMDMs infected with T. gondii. Further, the CaMKK2-dependent AMPK signalling pathway is responsible for the effect of SIRT1 on the FoxO3a-autophagy axis and for its anti-Toxoplasma activity. Compared to the significant development of creativity studies, individual creativity research has not reached a meaningful consensus regarding the most valid and reliable method for assessing individual creativity. This study revisited 2 of the most popular methods for assessing individual creativity: subjective and objective methods. This study analyzed 1,500 individuals to investigate whether the methods for assessing individual creativity affect the measurement outcomes of individual creativity. Findings indicated that subjective assessments have a smaller variance a higher mean and a moderate but significant correlation with objective assessment methods. Such differences can be motivated by social desirability, consistency motif, illusory superiority, and leniency biases. Based on these findings, this study highlighted the need to acknowledge how subjective and objective assessment methods may affect individual creativity assessment outcomes. Background: Subepithelial tumors are often detected incidentally during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. However, their natural history and clinical management have yet to be clearly established. The aim of this study was to evaluate the natural history and risk factors for progression of gastric SETs. Methods: The study retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who were diagnosed with gastric SET using upper gastrointestinal endoscopy between January 2005 and December 2017. Tumor progression was defined by a ≥ 25% increase in diameter. Results: Among 3237 patients, 1859 underwent serial upper gastrointestinal endoscopy for more than six months. Endoscopic ultrasonography was further performed in 733 (39.43%) patients. Resection was performed in 73 (3.93%) patients. Tumor progressed in 138 (7.42%) patients over a mean follow-up period of 59.41 months (range, 5–215 months). In progressed tumors, the mean initial size was 15.01 mm (range, 2–50 mm) and the mean size increment was 12.86 mm (range, 3–50 mm). Large initial tumor size (OR: 1.03, 95% CI: 1.01–1.05), surface ulcer or erosion (OR: 2.47, 95% CI: 1.21–5.06), lobulated shape (OR: 3.76, 95% CI: 2.00–7.06), and middle-third location (OR: 1.65, 95% CI: 1.08–2.52) were significant risk factors for tumor progression. Large SETs had higher rates of progression and tended to grow faster than smaller tumors (r = 0.44, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The majority of gastric SETs did not increase in size during the long-term follow-up. Serial endoscopy may be sufficient as a follow-up tool for small SETs with intact overlying mucosa without lobulated shape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Study Aims: Natural history after endoscopic resection (ER) for gastric dysplasia is still unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term clinical outcomes and risk factors after ER for gastric dysplasia between control and cases with synchronous or metachronous gastric neoplasm.Methods: A total of 1090 patients who had undergone ER for gastric dysplasia and been followed up for at least one year from December 2002 to December 2013 were finally analyzed. Risk factors affecting the development of synchronous or metachronous neoplasm (SMN) and long-term clinical outcomes after ER for gastric dysplasia were evaluated.Results: Synchronous and metachronous neoplasms had developed in 126 (11.6%) and 133 patients (12.2%) during the mean follow-up duration of 63.6 months, respectively. Five-year and 10-year risk of metachronous neoplasm were 9.8% and 27.2%, respectively. Median duration to the development of metachronous neoplasm was 103.1 months. While age (P < 0.001) and mucosal atrophy (P = 0.09) of index cases were associated with the development of synchronous neoplasm, age (P = 0.017), incomplete resection (P = 0.025), and intestinal metaplasia (P = 0.017) of background mucosa of index cases were significantly related to the development of metachronous neoplasm in multivariate analysis. Cumulative incidence of SMN was not significantly different among H. pylori negative, eradicated, and persistent group.Conclusions: Age, incomplete ER, and background intestinal metaplasia of index gastric dysplasia were significantly associated with metachronous recurrence. Endoscopic surveillance for metachronous recurrence after ER for gastric dysplasia is mandatory for longer than 10 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a promising technology platform for the production of chemicals and fuels from CO2 and external conducting materials (i.e., electrodes). In this system, electroactive microorganisms, called electrotrophs, serve as biocatalysts for cathodic reaction. While several CO2-fixing microorganisms can reduce CO2 to a variety of organic compounds by utilizing electricity as reducing energy, direct extracellular electron uptake is indispensable to achieve highly energy-efficient reaction. In the work reported here, Rhodobacter sphaeroides, a CO2-fixing chemoautotroph and a potential electroactive bacterium, was adopted to perform a cathodic CO2 reduction reaction via MES. To promote direct electron uptake, the graphite felt cathode was modified with a combination of chitosan and carbodiimide compound. Robust biofilm formation promoted by amide functionality between R. sphaeroides and a graphite felt cathode showed significantly higher faradaic efficiency (98.0%) for coulomb to biomass and succinic acid production than those of the bare (34%) and chitosan-modified graphite cathode (77.8%), respectively. The results suggest that cathode modification using a chitosan/carbodiimide composite may facilitate electron utilization by improving direct contact between an electrode and R. sphaeroides. Shells from Neolithic shell midden sites have been routinely dated in Korea, but they have not been calibrated based on the correction values (ΔR) for the marine reservoir effect (MRE). A lack of proper calibration has left dates on shells incomparable to those on terrestrial samples, and thus unusable in building the chronological sequence of shell middens. Here, we report the two new ΔR values of a pre-bomb (pre-1950) blue mussel from the south coast. We applied the two new and the two previously reported ΔR values to the three dates on marine shells from the Bibongri shell midden in southeastern Korea. Our ΔR adjusted calibration and the comparison to dates on charcoal and bone remains clarify an ambiguity in the stratigraphy and the Early Neolithic chronology at Bibongri. Our contribution is to provide the ΔR values that can be further applied to other Neolithic shell middens along the south coast. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
