Passivation capping that enhances the photoluminescence (PL) of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)-grown InAs surface quantum dots (SQDs) is realized by ex situ low-temperature atomic layer deposition (ALD)-grown Al2O3. As the Al2O3 cap thickness increased from 2 to 30 nm, the PL intensity was enhanced by 2.7-fold and the blue shift was suppressed. This is in strong contrast to wet chemistry passivation and in situ GaAs capping by MBE, both of which resulted in significant PL blueshift, due to etching in the former, and In/Ga intermixing and strain in the latter. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveal that the Al2O3 cap layer mimics the shape of the underlying SQDs. The cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) further reveals that the SQD size and shape remained unchanged after Al2O3 capping, which is in strong contrast to MBE-capping. The passivation mechanisms and native oxide reduction by trimethylaluminum (TMA), including self-clean-up reaction through ligand exchange, are discussed based on the results by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A detailed comparison between Al2O3 and ZnO cap layers reveals the significance of the cap properties on the SQD size/shape and PL blueshift. While the size/shape of SQDs is preserved by Al2O3 capping, the apex is slightly removed by ZnO capping, resulting in a stronger PL blueshift compared to Al2O3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presents two science teachers, Catherine and Jennifer, who took their first steps toward teaching socioscientific issues through collaborative action research. The teachers participated in the collaborative action research project because they wanted to address socioscientific issues but had limited experience in teaching them. The research questions included what kinds of challenges the teachers encountered when implementing socioscientific issues and to what extent they resolved the challenging issues as participating in collaborative action research. The primary data source consisted of audiotapes of regular group meetings containing information on the process of constructing and implementing lesson plans and reflecting on their teaching of socioscientific issues. We also collected classroom videotapes of the teachers' instruction and audiotapes of students' small group discussions and their worksheets. The findings indicated that when addressing socioscientific issues in the classes, the teachers encountered several challenging issues. We categorized them into four: (1) restructuring classroom dynamics and culture, (2) scaffolding students' engagement in socioscientific issues, (3) dealing with values, and (4) finding their niche in schools. However, this study showed that collaborative action research could be a framework for helping the teachers to overcome such challenges and have successful experiences of teaching socioscientific issues. These experiences became good motivation, to gradually develop their understanding of teaching socioscientific issues and instructional strategies for integrating the knowledge and skills that they had accumulated over the years.

A resurgence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP)—the leading cause of community-acquired bacterial pneumonia, particularly in children—occurred following the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to investigate the clinical manifestations, macrolide resistance patterns, and therapeutic approaches related to the MP pneumonia epidemic. Children and adolescents diagnosed with MP pneumonia in September–December 2023 were screened. Clinical data were retrospectively collected from 13 major hospitals using concordant microbiological criteria, including either a positive PCR result or four-fold increase in serological markers. Demographic characteristics, treatment modalities, and clinical outcomes were analyzed. Of the 474 screened patients, 374 (median age: 7.7 [IQR, 5.4–9.6] years; hospitalization rate: 88.6%) met the microbiological confirmation criteria. Most patients experienced fever (98.9%), and lobular/lobar consolidation (59.1%) was the dominant radiological finding. The macrolide resistance rate remained high at 87.0%; corticosteroids were widely used (55.6%) alongside macrolides, despite resistance. Patients with consolidation had prolonged fever (median 8 vs. 7 days, p = 0.020) and higher hospitalization rates (92.3% vs. 83.0%, p = 0.008). Macrolide resistance did not significantly influence radiological outcomes. This study highlights the ongoing challenge of macrolide resistance in MP pneumonia and need for tailored therapeutic approaches. Background: The long-term mortality and morbidity of patients with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) remain unclear. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted using the National Health Insurance Service dataset on hospitalized patients with SFTS aged ≥20 years between 2016 and 2021 (n = 1,217). Each SFTS case was matched with three controls hospitalized for non-SFTS-related diseases using propensity score matching. The all-cause mortality of patients with SFTS was evaluated during the one-year follow-up and compared with that of controls. Post-discharge events were investigated to determine the effects of SFTS on post-acute sequelae. Results: Finally, 1,105 patients with SFTS and 3,315 controls were included. Patients with SFTS had a higher risk of death during the one-year follow-up than that of controls (hazard ratio [HR], 2·26; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1·82–2·81). Thirty-day mortality was significantly higher in the SFTS group (HR, 3·99; 95% CI, 3·07–5·19) than in the control group. An increased risk of death after 31–365 days was observed among controls, though this difference was significant only among patients in their 80s (HR, 0·18; 95% CI, 0·06–0·57). For post-discharge events, patients in the SFTS group exhibited a higher risk of readmission (HR, 1·17; 95% CI, 1·04–1·32) and emergency room visit (HR, 2·32; 95% CI, 1·96–2·76) than those in the control group. Conclusion: SFTS induces a higher risk of short-term mortality and post-acute sequelae in hospitalized patients during a one-year follow-up than non-SFTS-related diseases. However, most studies have focused on the short-term mortality of patients with SFTS, and knowledge of their long-term outcomes is limited. This nationwide cohort study evaluated long-term outcomes of hospitalized patients with SFTS between 2016 and 2021 using the national dataset. We found that hospitalized patients with SFTS had higher one-year mortality (HR, 2.26) than those without SFTS. An increased mortality risk was attributed to death in the first 30 days of hospitalisation (HR, 3.99). Although the long-term mortality (31–365 days) did not differ between patients with and without SFTS, except for those in their 80s, patients with SFTS suffered from post-acute events, including readmission (HR, 1.17) or emergency room visit (HR, 2.32) during the one-year follow-up. SFTS is an emerging infectious disease that demands attention. The disease burden extends beyond the acute phase, with patients often experiencing ongoing health problems even after hospital discharge. Our findings underscore the post-acute burden of SFTS and offer valuable insights for the development of effective management plans for acute and post-acute illnesses in patients with SFTS. In this paper, we develop a new class of continuous bivariate distributions based on a shock model. The proposed class is general in the sense that numerous families of distributions can be generated from it. Distributional properties of the proposed class of distributions are studied. The bivariate ageing property and the dependence structure are also analysed. It is shown that the developed bivariate distributions exhibit positive dependency and a well-defined subclass of the proposed class of bivariate distributions satisfy the bivariate lack of memory property.
