128. Associations between eating patterns, dietary intakes and eating behaviors in premenopausal overweight women.

Abstract

The regulation of energy intake is complex and many biological, psychosocial and environmental influences have been identified. To our knowledge, no study has yet investigated how eating patterns could mediate associations between eating behaviors and self-reported energy intake in premenopausal overweight women. Therefore, objectives of this study were to examine associations between eating behaviors and eating patterns in premenopausal overweight women and to test if eating patterns could mediate the associations between eating behaviors and self-reported energy intake. Women completed a 3-day food record and the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire was used to assess eating behaviors (dietary restraint, disinhibition, hunger). In the total sample of women, flexible restraint was negatively (r=-0.18; p=0.03) and binge eating severity was positively (r=0.24; p=0.004) associated with self-reported energy intake. Moreover, flexible restraint was positively associated with the proportion of energy intake at breakfast (r=0.24; p=0.004), whereas disinhibition and binge eating severity were positively associated with the proportion of energy intake from snacks consumed after 5:00 pm (r=0.22, p=0.007 and r=0.22, p=0.01, respectively). In addition, mediational analyses showed that proportion of energy intake from snacks consumed after 5:00 pm explained 24.1% of the association between binge eating severity and self-reported energy intake. In conclusion, these results suggest that eating patterns are important factors to consider in order to explain the associations between eating behaviors and self-reported energy intake. 130. The influence of clinicians' previous trauma exposure on their assessment of child abuse risk.

Abstract

Research has identified high levels of trauma exposure and PTSD in professionals responsible for assessing children at risk for abuse. An important question arising is the influence of stress and trauma on professional judgment. This study examined the association between critical incident exposure, PTSD and workers' judgments of child risk. Ninety-six child protection workers participated in 2 simulated clinical interviews and subsequently completed standardized risk assessment measures. Workers reported high levels of exposure to critical events in the workplace and high levels of traumatic stress symptoms. Number of prior critical events encountered was negatively associated with assessment of risk. Level of traumatic stress symptoms was negatively associated with risk on one, but not other measures of risk. It is concluded that standardized measures for assessing a child's risk of abuse may be influenced by previous exposure to critical workplace events and levels of traumatic stress in workers. 131. An introduction to teamwork: findings from an evaluation of an interprofessional education experience for 1000 first-year health science students.

Abstract

Effective interprofessional collaboration is an important factor in addressing health care needs and priorities. Educators and health care practitioners have argued that interprofessional education (IPE) is necessary to equip students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors to work collaboratively and ultimately deliver enhanced patient/client care. The University of Toronto has implemented an introductory IPE session for approximately 1000 health science students that focuses on teamwork. This session provides students with an opportunity to be sensitized to the client's perspective and become familiar with roles and perspectives of different professions. A mixed method pre/post research design was developed to examine changes in students' perceptions and attitudes regarding IPE following their participation in this session. This study also endeavored to explore the pedagogic effectiveness of this large-scale IPE session. Students completed pre and post surveys based on the Interprofessional Attitudes Questionnaire and the Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale. A total of 399 surveys were matched for pre/post analysis, and 25 students participated in follow-up focus group interviews. Findings from this study reveal that a significant shift in many indicators occurred after this single intervention. Despite the large numbers of students, which meant a complex range of logistical factors to negotiate, our findings indicated that it is feasible to deliver a successful IPE session to a large cohort of first-year students. 133. Support of axonal regrowth by endogenous mechanisms following spinal cord injury in adult rats.

Abstract

Because of its non-invasive nature and ease of regulation, a closely monitored cryogenic method of tissue injury was used to create a degree of spinal cord injury within which there would be an extended regrowth of axons. The parameters of cooling used in the present study resulted in an injury length of 1 cm through which 3 mm of measured axonal regrowth and 8 mm of observed regrowth occurred over a 56-day period in the ascending fibers of the dorsal column of the mature rat. This was associated with the development of a cellular matrix consisting of macrophages, macroglia and Schwann cells which gradually expands within the injured area initially dominated by macrophages. It is the authors' impression that the presence of a substantial microglial component within the macrophage population may be a significant factor in the success of the axonal regrowth. Under this influence and that of the invading axons, the astrocyte, which provides the immediate cell support to the growing axon, can be maintained in a functional state that is supportive and not obstructive to the axon, presumably through the recruitment of astrocyte precursors from an indigenous stem cell population. These tissue changes indicate that adult mammalian spinal cord tissue does have the capacity to develop on its own a matrix capable of supporting the regrowth of axons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Apc1638N mouse carries a targeted mutant allele at the endogenous adenomatous polyposis coli (Apc) gene and represents a unique in vivo model to study intestinal tumor formation and progression. Heterozygous Apc+/Apc1638N mice progressively develop 5-6 adenomas and adenocarcinomas of the small intestine within the first 6 months of life following a histologic sequence similar to that observed in human intestinal tumors. Here, we present the somatic mutation analysis of a total of 57 tumors. The results indicate that in > or = 75% of the lesions tested the wild type copy of the Apc gene is lost and that this LOH event extends to the entire mouse chromosome 18. Unexpectedly, mutations at the K-, N- and H-ras genes have not been found in these tumors. Immunohistochemical analysis of the Apc1638N tumors failed to detect accumulation of the Tp53 protein. Also, no mutations have been found in exons 7 and 8 of the Tp53 gene. These results indicate that, although the genetic inactivation of Apc is involved in the initiating event of the human as well as murine intestinal tumorigenesis, tumor growth and progression follow different mutational pathways in these two species. 136. ON THE VIBRATIONS OF AN N -STRING

Abstract

We study the small-amplitude transverse oscillations of a planar network of N sections of string which are all attached at one common extremity. This network is called an N -string. When the N sections of string are of finite length, we find Fourier series expressions describing the vibrations perpendicular to the plane containing the N -string at rest. The standing perpendicular wave energies of a plucked symmetric N -string are analyzed. It is found that higher harmonics can be excited to an energy level above that of the first harmonic simply by plucking at an appropriate location along one of the strings. This result is in contrast to an ordinary plucked string and may lead to interesting applications; most notably the construction of new musical instruments. We also describe the movements of one travelling perpendicular wave in an N -string as well as the interaction of such waves. A method for increasing or reducing the amplitude of travelling perpendicular waves is outlined.

Abstract

Neutrinos associated with solar flares (solar-flare neutrinos) provide information on particle acceleration mechanisms during the impulsive phase of solar flares. We searched using the Super-Kamiokande detector for neutrinos from solar flares that occurred during solar cycles $23$ and $24$, including the largest solar flare (X28.0) on November 4th, 2003. In order to minimize the background rate we searched for neutrino interactions within narrow time windows coincident with $\gamma$-rays and soft X-rays recorded by satellites. In addition, we performed the first attempt to search for solar-flare neutrinos from solar flares on the invisible side of the Sun by using the emission time of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). By selecting twenty powerful solar flares above X5.0 on the visible side and eight CMEs whose emission speed exceeds $2000$ $\mathrm{km \, s^{-1}}$ on the invisible side from 1996 to 2018, we found two (six) neutrino events coincident with solar flares occurring on the visible (invisible) side of the Sun, with a typical background rate of $0.10$ ($0.62$) events per flare in the MeV-GeV energy range. No significant solar-flare neutrino signal above the estimated background rate was observed. As a result we set the following upper limit on neutrino fluence at the Earth $\mathit{\Phi}, Comment: 36 pages, 18 figures, 9 tables (Figure 12 was replaced because it was incorrect in version 1.)

Abstract

Non-Standard Interactions (NSI) between neutrinos and matter affect the neutrino flavor oscillations. Due to the high matter density in the core of the Sun, solar neutrinos are suited to probe these interactions. Using the $277$ kton-yr exposure of Super-Kamiokande to $^{8}$B solar neutrinos, we search for the presence of NSI. Our data favors the presence of NSI with down quarks at 1.8$\sigma$, and with up quarks at 1.6$\sigma$, with the best fit NSI parameters being ($\epsilon_{11}^{d},\epsilon_{12}^{d}$) = (-3.3, -3.1) for $d$-quarks and ($\epsilon_{11}^{u},\epsilon_{12}^{u}$) = (-2.5, -3.1) for $u$-quarks. After combining with data from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory and Borexino, the significance increases by 0.1$\sigma$., Comment: Author: Pierce Weatherly 25 pages.
