Abstract

This thesis deals with four main aspects of the Morte D'Arthur : 'Personal Identity', 'Revelation of Character', The Function. of the Plot in Delineating Character', and 'Shifts of Focus'. 'Personal Identity': The idea of personal identity is based on a character's reputation and what others say about him his name some-times takes on a symbolic quality, becoming a tangible part of his identity, Because identity is so important, the negative aspects of it, disguises and mistaken identities, play a large part in Arthurian adventures. The idea of reality is developed in these episodes: appearance to a large, extent is reality, although in the end a knight is responsible for his actions even when he is masquerading as someone else. 'Revelation of Character' Characters define, themselves partly through their own actions and reasons for their actions. As in the previous section, characters are also partly defined by the impression they make on others. The character is 'revealed' rather than developed, for it is a rather static quality which exists changelessly. 'Rather than 'development' of character in the modern sense, there is a gradual revealing of what is already there. This view of the character emphasises his being and how he behaves using his free will, The action seems to originate within the character himself and our knowledge of him increases by the accumulation of his actions and by his and others' interpretation of his motives. The Function of the Plot in Delineating Character. This section sees the characters as instruments of the plot. The plot is an obstacle course over which the characters proceed from one fixed object to another, The actions of the characters are seen as originating in the plot, that is, the character is forced to tones a decision or to react to external forces. The plot, by bringing sons immediate problem upon a character, may illuminate elements of his personality. One kind of crisis for the character is the 'fork' in which he is forced to choose between two actions. Seen this way, the characters still do not 'develop', for their personalities are only revealed through their actions, and these personalities do not change. The plot may also be a series of thematic progressions in which situations are repeated with minor variations to produce a. complex, almost musical texture, 'Shifts of Focus': These include verbal, visual, temporal, and spatial shifts of focus. The verbal shift is a change from direct to indirect speech, or vice versa. It may be used to emphasise important parts of a speech given in summary and tray give the impression that it was all in direct speech. The sense of dimension and awareness in enhanced by 'over-hearing' snatches of conversations, as when a. snippet of direct speech is inserted in a passage of indirect discourse. Conversations blend naturally with the surrounding narrative description so that the dialogue is not formally set out but rather unobtrusively introduced into the flow of the action. The visual shift is like the cinematographic technique of following a long-range shot with a close-up. The scene may change from the knights in a battle to the spectators and back again. The main action is com7ented upon and partly defined by the reactions of the on-lookers, again there is an element of added awareness when the main scene is put into a larger context. The texporal and spatial shifts are also like modern film techniques: they arcs large jumps to completely different tints and places. They, too, put the present action into a larger context. Future events are attached to present and pest events; events in different places happen simultaneously. Characters have a solidity, for later, after the present time, they still have an existence somewhere. The sense of self-containednessof the Arthurian world stems both from the impression of simultaneity of action and from this idea that things 'happen et future times that are related to (if not always caused by) events in the present or past, There is more an illusion of characterisation in Malory than real characterisation in the modern sense, Because so much emphasis is put on identity and recognition of an individual knight, the impression is given that real differences exist. Individual characters and events are seen to be part of a larger, infinite whole made of tradition and the 'French Book', There is an attractive fragmentary quality in the Morte D'arthur implying that much more has happened which might have been reported, but escaped the boundaries of the book, The narrator is not so much an inventor as a. chronicler.

Abstract

The Sydney Particle Study involved the comprehensive measurement of meteorology, particles and gases at a location in western Sydney during February–March 2011 and April–May 2012. The aim of this study was to increase scientific understanding of particle formation and transformations in the Sydney airshed. In this paper we describe the methods used to collect and analyse particle and gaseous samples, as well as the methods employed for the continuous measurement of particle concentrations, particle microphysical properties, and gaseous concentrations. This paper also provides a description of the data collected and is a metadata record for the data sets published in Keywood et al. (2016a, https://doi.org/10.4225/08/57903B83D6A5D) and Keywood et al. (2016b, https://doi.org/10.4225/08/5791B5528BD63).

Abstract

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are important precursors to the formation of ozone and fine particulate matter, the two pollutants of most concern in Sydney, Australia. Despite this importance, there are very few published measurements of ambient VOC concentrations in Australia. In this paper, we present mole fractions of several important VOCs measured during the campaign known as MUMBA (Measurements of Urban, Marine and Biogenic Air) in the Australian city of Wollongong (34°S). We particularly focus on measurements made during periods when clean marine air impacted the measurement site and on VOCs of biogenic origin. Typical unpolluted marine air mole fractions during austral summer 2012-2013 at latitude 34°S were established for CO2 (391.0 ± 0.6 ppm), CH4 (1760.1 ± 0.4 ppb), N2O (325.04 ± 0.08 ppb), CO (52.4 ± 1.7 ppb), O3 (20.5 ± 1.1 ppb), acetaldehyde (190 ± 40 ppt), acetone (260 ± 30 ppt), dimethyl sulphide (50 ± 10 ppt), benzene (20 ± 10 ppt), toluene (30 ± 20 ppt), C8H10 aromatics (23 ± 6 ppt) and C9H12 aromatics (36 ± 7 ppt). The MUMBA site was frequently influenced by VOCs of biogenic origin from a nearby strip of forested parkland to the east due to the dominant north-easterly afternoon sea breeze. VOCs from the more distant densely forested escarpment to the west also impacted the site, especially during two days of extreme heat and strong westerly winds. The relative amounts of different biogenic VOCs observed for these two biomes differed, with much larger increases of isoprene than of monoterpenes or methanol during the hot westerly winds from the escarpment than with cooler winds from the east. However, whether this was due to different vegetation types or was solely the result of the extreme temperatures is not entirely clear. We conclude that the clean marine air and biogenic signatures measured during the MUMBA campaign provide useful information about the typical abundance of several key VOCs and can be used to constrain chemical transport mode

Abstract

As native bee populations decrease, there is a need to better understand their nutritional requirements to sustain healthy pollinator populations. A common native bee to eastern North America is the small carpenter bee, Ceratina calcarata. Previous studies have shown that the primary pollen sources for C. calcarata consist of clover and rose.The aim of this study is to compare the effects of diet composition on body size, development and survival. Artificial pollen diets were created using five different ratios of commercially available clover and rose pollen.Diets containing higher ratios of clover pollen produced larger individuals with increased survival rates and faster development times. To examine this further, the macronutrient profiles of clover and rose pollen were characterised comparing: protein, sugar, fatty acid, and amino acid content. Results indicated that rose pollen contained significantly higher protein and sugar content, while clover pollen had higher concentrations of essential amino acids. These are crucial to bee health and development, which helps to explain the increased survivorship observed on high clover diet treatments.Taken together, these results show that clover pollen provides a higher quality diet for larval development and survival of the native small carpenter bee. This research indicates that diet has a significant effect on the health of the native pollinator community and more research is needed to further explore the balance between pollen quality and availability, including essential macronutrients and the availability of these floral sources for wild bees. Abstract

We present findings from the Measurements of Urban, Marine and Biogenic Air (MUMBA) campaign, which took place in the coastal city of Wollongong in New SouthWales, Australia. We focus on a few key air quality indicators, along with a comparison to regional scale chemical transport model predictions at a spatial resolution of 1 km by 1 km. We find that the CSIRO chemical transport model provides accurate simulations of ozone concentrations at most times, but underestimates the ozone enhancements that occur during extreme temperature events. Themodel alsomeets previously published performance standards for fine particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5), and the larger aerosol fraction (PM10). We explore the observed composition of the atmosphere within this urban air-shed during the MUMBA campaign and discuss the different influences on air quality in the city. Our findings suggest that further improvements to our ability to simulate air quality in this coastal city can be made through more accurate anthropogenic and biogenic emissions inventories and better understanding of the impact of extreme temperatures on air quality. The challenges in modelling air quality within the urban air-shed ofWollongong, including difficulties in accurate simulation of the local meteorology, are likely to be replicated in many other coastal cities in the Southern Hemisphere.

Abstract

Objectives To describe the experiences of patients with long-term conditions who are referred to and engage with a Link Worker social prescribing programme and identify the impact of the Link Worker programme on health and well-being. Design Qualitative study using semistructured interviews with thematic analysis of the data. Intervention Link Worker social prescribing programme comprising personalised support to identify meaningful health and wellness goals, ongoing support to achieve agreed objectives and linkage into appropriate community services. Setting Inner-city area in West Newcastle upon Tyne, UK (population n=132 000) ranked 40th most socioeconomically deprived in England, served by 17 general practices. Participants Thirty adults with long-term conditions, 14 female, 16 male aged 40–74 years, mean age 62 years, 24 white British, 1 white Irish, 5 from black and minority ethnic communities. Results Most participants experienced multimorbidity combined with mental health problems, low self-confidence and social isolation. All were adversely affected physically, emotionally and socially by their health problems. The intervention engendered feelings of control and self-confidence, reduced social isolation and had a positive impact on health-related behaviours including weight loss, healthier eating and increased physical activity. Management of long-term conditions and mental health in the face of multimorbidity improved and participants reported greater resilience and more effective problem-solving strategies. Conclusions Findings suggest that tackling complex and long-term health problems requires an extensive holistic approach not possible in routine primary care. This model of social prescribing, which takes into account physical and mental health, and social and economic issues, was successful for patients who engaged with the service. Future research on a larger scale is required to assess when and for whom social prescribing is clinically effective and cost-effective.

Abstract

Continuing professional development (CPD) is essential for all health and social care professionals. It is also beneficial for organisations. Evidence shows that when there is significant investment in CPD, individuals feel valued and their practice improves. In order to maximise the potential of your CPD, this practical handbook guides you through the five TRAMm stages, which are depicted as stations: Tell (T), Record (R), Activity (A), Monitor (M) and measure (m). The tried-and-tested TRAMm model reflects the five standards for CPD laid down by the Health and Care Professions Council; and your own learning needs provide the main focus, enabling you to develop a full CPD portfolio as you progress. At the end of each chapter, there are opportunities to reflect on your learning – and apply theory to practice through a series of tasks. Designed for all levels (from health and social care students to experienced practitioners), this book may also be useful for associated support workers and other healthcare professionals, including doctors, pharmacists, optometrists, nurses and midwives. In addition, some aspects will be relevant for professionals outside healthcare, such as teachers, surveyors and engineers.
