The excellent physical and chemical properties of carbon nanomaterials render them suitable for application in gas sensors. However, the synthesis of carbon nanomaterials using high-temperature furnaces is time consuming and expensive. In this study, we synthesize a carbon nanomaterial using local laser-scribing on a substrate coated with a Cu-embedded polyimide (PI) thin film to reduce the processing time and cost. Spin coating using a Cu-embedded PI solution is performed to deposit a Cu-embedded PI thin film (Cu@PI) on a quartz substrate, followed by the application of a pulsed laser for carbonization. In contrast to a pristine PI solution-based PI thin film, the laser absorption of the Cu-embedded PI thin film based on Cu@PI improved. The laser-scribed carbon nanomaterial synthesized using Cu@PI exhibits a three-dimensional structure that facilitates gas molecule absorption, and when it is exposed to NO2 and NH3, its electrical resistance changes by −0.79% and +0.33%, respectively.

Laser scribing has been proposed as a fast and easy tool to reduce graphene oxide (GO) for a wide range of applications. Here, we investigate laser reduction of GO under a range of processing and material parameters, such as laser scan speed, number of laser passes, and material coverage. We use Raman spectroscopy for the characterization of the obtained materials. We demonstrate that laser scan speed is the most influential parameter, as a slower scan speed yields poor GO reduction. The number of laser passes is influential where the material coverage is higher, producing a significant improvement of GO reduction on a second pass. Material coverage is the least influential parameter, as it affects GO reduction only under restricted conditions.

The development of miniaturized energy storage components with high areal performance for emerging electronics depends on scalable fabrication techniques for thick electrodes and an in‐depth understanding of the intrinsic properties of materials. Based on the coprecipitation behavior of electrically exfoliated graphene and reduced graphene oxide–templated polyaniline (PANi) nanoflake, this work develops a simple, green, low‐cost, and scalable drop‐casted technique to easily fabricate uniform thick electrodes (up to 80 μm) on various substrates. Through using a direct laser writing process, planar microsupercapacitors can be readily attained. As‐fabricated flexible all‐solid‐state microsupercapacitors exhibit an ultrahigh areal capacitance of 172 mF cm−2 at 0.1 A cm−2 and excellent cycling stability of 91% capacitance retention over 2000 cycles at a high current density of 1.0 A cm−2. Furthermore, based on the electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance research result, the pseudocapacitance contribution is mostly provided by the adsorption/desorption of SO42− anions during the protonation process of PANi. This work offers a simple strategy toward superior‐performance micro‐sized energy devices and a new perspective to understand the origin of the capacitance of composites and heterostructures.

The development of flexible Cu(In, Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells opens new markets for indoor and outdoor applications, and thus has become one of the major directions for present research. Although the efficiency gap between glass and flexible substrates can now be reduced on a flexible polyimide through KF post-deposition treatment, it still seems difficult to transfer research-level technologies to industrial applications. Therefore, in this article, except for the progress made on different flexible materials, we discuss the feasibility of laser scribing and durability of transparent electrodes on flexible substrates. Finally, we provide an overview of the emerging technologies including cracked selenium sources and lift-off processes that may be applied for other flexible low-temperature substrates in the future.

Striated YBCO-coated conductor is a variant structure of the second-generation high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes. The ac loss is reduced owing to the YBCO layer of the striated YBCO tape is divided into filaments by laser scribing. Hence, it is promising for practical HTS electrical application, such as HTS transformer and cable. However, when the superconducting apparatuses are operated in the power grid, it will possibly experience the lightning impulse current in some extreme working condition. Thus, the performance of striated YBCO tapes suffering from exposure to lightning current is important to be studied. In this paper, a numerical model based on the electromagnetic–thermal coupling is built to analyze the lightning current performance of the striated YBCO tapes. The influence of structural changes on the thermal stability is discussed. The standard lightning current waveform is chosen, i.e., 8/20 μs. The simulated results show that cutting the copper edges of striated YBCO tapes will significantly degrade the lightning current withstand capacity. Instead, the degradation effect of grooves is not so obvious.

Carbon nanomaterials have attracted significant research attention as core materials in various industrial sectors owing to their excellent physicochemical properties. However, because the preparation of carbon materials is generally accompanied by high-temperature heat treatment, it has disadvantages in terms of cost and process. In this study, highly sensitive carbon nanomaterials were synthesized using a local laser scribing method from a copper-embedded polyacrylonitrile (CuPAN) composite film with a short processing time and low cost. The spin-coated CuPAN was converted into a carbonization precursor through stabilization and then patterned into a carbon nanomaterial of the desired shape using a pulsed laser. In particular, the stabilization process was essential in laser-induced carbonization, and the addition of copper promoted this effect as a catalyst. The synthesized material had a porous 3D structure that was easy to detect gas, and the resistance responses were detected as −2.41 and +0.97% by exposure to NO2 and NH3, respectively. In addition, the fabricated gas sensor consists of carbon materials and quartz with excellent thermal stability, therefore, it is expected to operate as a gas sensor even in extreme environments.

The interest in the use of laser-scribing for the manufacturing of conductive patterns in electronics has been growing in the last years since this technique enables: i) inherent lithography without the use of masks, ii) a green-electronics approach, limiting the use of hazardous agents or reactives and iii) a cost-effective fabrication process with a very limited number of fabrication steps. In this contribution, we apply such a technique for obtaining RF devices on different substrates and using different precursors as either laser-activated or scribed conductive materials. The role of the laser influence on the photothermal process and the optimization of the electrical conductivity will be discussed. The techniques are applied for the realization of different samples of antennas in the UHF RFID band. The preliminary obtained results show interesting perspective for the future adoption of the laser-based production of flexible electronics RF devices.

Flexible perovskite solar cells (FPSCs) are prime candidates for applications requiring a highly efficient, low-cost, lightweight, thin, and even foldable power source. Despite record efficiencies of lab-scale flexible devices (19.5% on a 0.1 cm2 area), scalability represents a critical factor toward commercialization of FPSCs. Large-area automized deposition techniques and efficient laser scribing procedures are required to enable a high-throughput production of flexible perovskite modules (FPSMs), with the latter being much more challenging compared to glass substrates. In this work, we introduce the combined concept of laser scribing optimization and automatized spray-coating of SnO2 layers. Based on a systematic variation of the incident laser power and a comprehensive morphological and electrical analysis of laser-based cell interconnections, optimal scribing parameters are identified. Furthermore, spray-coating is used to deposit uniform compact SnO2 films on large-area (>120 cm2) plastic substrates. FPSCs with spray-coated SnO2 show comparable performance as spin-coated cells, delivering up to 15.3% efficiency on small areas under 1 sun illumination. When upscaling to large areas, FPSMs deliver 12% power conversion efficiency (PCE) and negligible hysteresis on 16.8 cm2 and 11.7% PCE on a 21.8 cm2 active area. Our perovskite devices preserved 78% efficiency when the active area increased from 0.1 to 16.8 cm2, demonstrating that our combined approach is an effective strategy for large-area manufacturing of perovskite devices on flexible substrates.

Notwithstanding its relatively recent discovery, graphene has gone through many evolution steps and inspired a multitude of applications in many fields, from electronics to life science. The recent advancements in graphene production and patterning, and the inclusion of two-dimensional (2D) graphenic materials in three-dimensional (3D) superstructures, further extended the number of potential applications. In this Review, we focus on laser-induced graphene (LIG), an intriguing 3D porous graphenic material produced by direct laser scribing of carbonaceous precursors, and on its applications in chemical sensors and biosensors. LIG can be shaped in different 3D forms with a high surface-to-volume ratio, which is a valuable characteristic for sensors that typically rely on phenomena occurring at surfaces and interfaces. Herein, an overview of LIG, including synthesis from various precursors, structure, and characteristic properties, is first provided. The discussion focuses especially on transport and surface properties, and on how these can be controlled by tuning the laser processing. Progresses and trends in LIG-based chemical sensors are then reviewed, discussing the various transduction mechanisms and different LIG functionalization procedures for chemical sensing. A comparative evaluation of sensors performance is then provided. Finally, sensors for glucose detection are reviewed in more detail, since they represent the vast majority of LIG-based chemical sensors.

The laser scribing is one of the crucial technological steps in the industrial processing of solar cells, while the mechanical scribing is generally used for practical reasons on the laboratory scale. Using a picosecond laser, preliminary results on the scribing of CuInGaSe2 thin film solar cells deposited by the low temperature pulsed electron technique, are reported. The complete comparison between laser- and mechanical-scribing is still in progress, however SEM imaging and EDX analysis confirm the excellent structural and morphological quality of the laser scribed samples.

In this work, the laser-scribing technique was used as a low-cost, rapid and facile method for fabricating digital microfluidic (DMF) systems. Laser-scribed graphene (LSG) electrodes are directly synthesized on flexible substrates to pattern the DMF electrode arrays. This facilitates the DMF electrodes&rsquo, fabrication process by eliminating many microfabrication steps. An electrowetting test was performed to investigate the effectiveness of the LSG DMF electrodes in changing the contact angles of droplets. Different DMF operations were successfully performed using the proposed LSG DMF chips in both open and closed DMF systems. The quality and output resolution were examined to assess the performance of such patterned electrodes in the DMF systems. To verify the efficacy of the LSG DMF chips, a one-step direct assay for the detection of Legionellapneumophila deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was performed on the chip without the need for any washing step. The high specificity in distinguishing a single-nucleotide mismatch was achieved by detecting target DNA concentrations as low as 1 nM. Our findings suggest that the proposed rapid and easy fabrication method for LSG DMF electrodes offers a great platform for low-cost and easily accessible point-of-care diagnostic devices.

Developing soft electrothermal actuators (ETAs) has drawn extensive concern in recent years. This article presents a comprehensive review on recent progress of soft ETAs through five sections: device design on structure and materials, property, fabrication methods, applications, and prospects. It's found that the fabrication process can be divided into standard surface complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology, novel laser scribing, and inkjet printing method. Moreover, current applications involve three aspects: mechanical applications, optical applications, and biomimetic applications. It will develop in the direction of increasing electrothermal efficiency and response speed emphatically. This review encourages achievement of its higher performance and broad applications in the future.

An approach to decrease the core (iron) loss of grain-oriented silicon steel sheets is to reduce the magnetic domain size by using laser irradiation on the surface of the sheets. In this research, after finding the optimal conditions for traditional laser scribing of HIB (high-permeability)-steel sheets, the effect of the two new parameters "two-sided laser-scribing" and "simultaneous application of magnetic field during laser-radiation" on reducing core losses was investigated. By optimizing the variables in the traditional method (laser scribing on one side without the presence of magnetic fields), core losses at 1.7 T and 50 Hz were reduced by 9.7%. Laser treatment of both sides resulted in a decrease of core loss of 13.7%. Applying a magnetic field during laser scribing could have a positive or negative effect on core losses, depending on the direction of the magnetic field. In the optimum conditions, with double-sided laser scribing of HIB-sheets in the presence of a magnetic field, core losses were reduced by 16.8%. This is a significant result compared to the 9.7% of the traditional method.

The combination of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technology with microfluidics makes it possible to diagnose genetic disease through label-free on-chip DNA detection. However, open problems including the integration of SERS substrate with microfluidic devices, controllable trapping and releasing of target molecules are still challenging. Here we demonstrate a facile laser scribing method to fabricate silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and graphene oxide (GO) based biochips as a reusable SERS sensor for DNA detection. Programmable laser scribing of the AgNPs@GO composite film enables direct patterning of sensitive SERS channels that consist of graphene supported AgNPs by exfoliating the composites into hierarchical porous structures. Integrating the SERS-active patterns with a microfluidic chip forms a biochip for allowing SERS detection of DNA. The noncovalent interactions between DNA and graphene mediated controllable trapping and releasing of DNA sequences, enabling efficient on-chip SERS detection and the regeneration of the biochip. The simple, green and cost-effective fabrication of the SERS-active biochips reveals great potential for biomolecular sensing and genetic engineering applications.

Strain sensors are devices used in applications such as electronic skin, prosthetic limbs, and e-textile applications, etc., for the purpose of measuring the physical elongation of a desired structure under a given or applied force. An artificial throat, using a strain sensor, was recently developed as an aid for speech impaired individuals. Strain sensors have been developed using graphene and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), with a reported gauge factor ranging from (5~120). We have developed a strain sensor through laser scribing. Using laser scribing is a recent and facile technology, used for printed electronics. Complex geometries and patterns can be drawn very easily using this method. The laser scribing method relies on the property of certain materials to form a graphene-like conductive material upon irradiation by lasers. Polyimide and graphene oxide (GO) are two such materials.In these experiments, 2×2 cm sheet of polyimide were taken and printed 1×1 cm box on the sheet using a laser patterning setup of 450 nm wavelength. Graphene oxide solution was drop-casted on the reduced polyimide sheet of 1×1cm, to increase its sensitivity, and then the drop-casted graphene oxide was reduced using the same laser. The strain sensor was characterized by a micro-strain testing machine. The normalized resistance was plotted against strain and the gauge factor was calculated. The effect of the laser intensity was investigated and different gauge factors were calculated by varying the intensity of the laser. The gauge factors were found to be in the range of 49-54 and was compared with the polyimide reduced strain sensor (without drop-casting the GO).

Hybrid metal halide perovskites have emerged as a potential photovoltaic material for low-cost thin film solar cells due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. However, high efficiencies obtained with lab-scale cells are difficult to replicate in large modules. The upscaling process requires careful optimization of multiple steps, such as laser scribing, which divides a module into serially connected cells using a pulsed laser beam. In this work, we characterize the effect of laser scribing on the perovskite layer adjacent to a P3 scribe line using analytical scanning and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy techniques. We demonstrate that lateral flow of residual thermal energy from picosecond laser pulses decomposes the perovskite layer over extended length scales. We propose that the exact nature of the change in perovskite composition is determined by the presence of preexisting PbI2 grains and hence by the original perovskite formation reaction. Furthermore, we show that along the P3 lines, the indium tin oxide contact is also damaged by high-fluence pulses. Our results provide a deeper understanding on the interaction between laser pulses and perovskite solar modules, highlighting the need to minimize material damage by careful tuning of both laser parameters and the device fabrication procedure.

Heterostructures with built-in electric fields are crucial for charge separation and lateral photovoltaic effect in current position-sensitive detectors (PSDs), which have to be produced by combining semiconductors with metal or other semiconductors to form various vertical junctions (e.g. Schottky junctions) via complicated and high-cost manufacture processes. In the present work, it was found that vertical junctions can be directly written and patterned inside graphene oxide (GO) films with gradient C/O ratios by laser scribing due to the optical filter effect of the films and the formation of reduced GO (rGO) layers. Such junctions were verified to show the capability for high-precision position sensing on the micrometer scale, owing to the lateral photovoltaic effect. We proposed a laser-assisted method to obtain smooth Fabry-Perot cavity facet of AlGaN-based UV laser structure grown on c-plane sapphire. We demonstrated that laser scribing parameters has significant influence on the morphology of the cleavage plane. Smoothness and uniformity of the facet was improved by choosing appropriate cleaving direction, distance and depth. Therefore, laser scribing is an effective and controllable process to fabricate facets of AlGaN-based laser.

Due to its excellent flexibility, graphene has an important application prospect in epidermal electronic sensors. However, there are drawbacks in current devices, such as sensitivity, range, lamination, and artistry. In this work, we have demonstrated a multilayer graphene epidermal electronic skin based on laser scribing graphene, whose patterns are programmable. A process has been developed to remove the unreduced graphene oxide. This method makes the epidermal electronic skin not only transferable to butterflies, human bodies, and any other objects inseparably and elegantly, merely with the assistance of water, but also have better sensitivity and stability. Therefore, pattern electronic skin could attach to every object like artwork. When packed in Ecoflex, electronic skin exhibits excellent performance, including ultrahigh sensitivity (gauge factor up to 673), large strain range (as high as 10%), and long-term stability. Therefore, many subtle physiological signals can be detected based on epidermal electronic skin with a single graphene line. Electronic skin with multiple graphene lines is employed to detect large-range human motion. To provide a deeper understanding of the resistance variation mechanism, a physical model is established to explain the relationship between the crack directions and electrical characteristics. These results show that graphene epidermal electronic skin has huge potential in health care and intelligent systems.

We present experimental data on the ac losses in Roebel cables with striated 2G YBCO strands. Electromagnetic measurements by pick-up coils were carried out at different temperatures between 10K and 85K at frequencies between 2Hz and 20kHz in transverse ac fields up to 0.5T. The Roebel cable samples were assembled from laser cut 2G YBCO strands, which consist of striated filaments prepared with laser scribing. Measurements at different temperatures show that the Roebel cables with striated strands have a lower losses by a factor of strand filament number over the whole temperature range. For analysis, a semi-quantitative approach for unstriated Roebel was found to work satisfactorily. However the Striated Roebel cables appears to have a different field penetration from those of the unstriated Roebel. The coupling current among the filaments has a time constant shorter than 0.1 ms and do not appear to increase in the striated Roebel cables, hence insignificant for most magnets related applications.

Patterning graphene allows to precisely tune its properties to manufacture flexible functional materials or miniaturized devices for electronic and biomedical applications. However, conventional lithographic techniques are cumbersome for scalable production of time- and cost-effective graphene patterns, thus greatly impeding their practical applications. Here, we present a simple scalable fabrication of wafer-scale three-dimensional (3D) graphene micropatterns by direct laser tuning graphene oxide reduction and expansion using a LightScribe DVD writer. This one-step laser-scribing process can produce custom-made 3D graphene patterns on the surface of a disk with dimensions ranging from microscale up to decimeter scale in about 20 min. Through control over laser-scribing parameters, the resulting various 3D graphene patterns are exploited as scaffolds for controlling cell alignment. The 3D graphene patterns demonstrate their potential to biomedical applications, beyond the fields of electronics and photonics, which will allow to incorporate flexible graphene patterns for 3D cell or tissue culture to promote tissue engineering and drug testing applications.

Nonuniform thickness of the front transparent conductive oxide (TCO) used for fabrication of thin-film solar module (TFSM) based on micromorphic technology affects P1 laser scribing (P1 scribing on the TCO front layer). A method for improvement of the thickness uniformity of the front TCO using modification of the existing system for gas supply of the LPCVD (TCO1200) vacuum setup with the aid of gasdistributing tubes is proposed. The thickness nonuniformity of the deposition procedure is decreased from 15.2 to 11.4% to improve uniformity of the resistance of the front TCO and light-scattering factor of TFSM. In addition, the number of P1 laser scribes with inadmissible resistance of insulation (less than 2 MΩ) is decreased by a factor of 7. A decrease in the amount of melt at the P1 scribe edges leads to an increase in the TFSM shunting resistance by 56 Ω. The TFSM output power is increased by 0.4 W due to improvement of parameters of the front TCO related to application of gas-distributing tubes.
