Since 2014, the Danish Ministry of Education has conducted yearly national well-being surveys for children of all ages in public school. The ministry introduced the survey as a tool for schools to monitor well-being of their pupils, to make informed adjustments of their own related practices, and to inform education policy at the municipal level. This paper studies the characteristics of the social well-being segment of the survey. We document that low school social well-being correlates meaningfully with standard measures of disadvantage at the pupil and parental level, just as teacher characteristics and classroom composition are additional important predictors of well-being. We also show that school social well-being exhibits high degrees of persistence over time, regardless of whether or not we control for a wide range of background characteristics. We finally show that high school social well-being is positively associated with academic performance and negatively associated with absence from school, though estimates are not large in size.

This study explores experiences of the cultural encounter taking place in selected Danish companies located in the South Korean capital of Seoul. The analysis takes its point of departure in the organisational culture within the compa-nies, and how it is perceived and experienced by different employees. Qualitative interviews make out the empirical foundation of the study, and Edgar Schein’s outline of organizational culture, as divided into three cultural levels and shaped by different cultural dimensions, serves as the general theoretical outline and basis for analysis. How so-called macro cultures influence organisational culture, is a vital point within this study. On that note, professor Lisbeth Clausen’s thoughts on cultural stereotypes are considered, as part of a closing discussion on the role and possible avoid-ance of stereotyping when exploring and dealing with cultural differences, which is what this study does. Ultimately the study finds that certain cultural dimensions related to the topics of relations, communication and what I have chosen to call work-life balance seem to heavily shape the experiences of the Danish-Korean cultural encounter within the companies. Also in ways that align with preexisting cultural stereotypes. These stereotypes however, regardless of how fundamental they might seem in basic cultural navigation, can only explain so much, and not account for the way new cultural norms and behavior evolve and grow as both Danish and South Korean staff become acquainted with cultural dynamics that challenge their own basic assumptions. All this happens within an intercultural setting that seems to be continuously negotiated, but also never reaches a point where a local and company-specific identity manifests and make cultural stereotypes obsolete. Looking forward, and based on the growing internationalization of society, not least within companies, it then also becomes interesting to explore how relevant it will be for companies to develop concrete ways to deal with intercultural circumstances. In order to ensure effective and rewarding cooperation in any kind of cultural encounter also, between Denmark and Korea, in the years to come.

Kemiska arbetsmiljörisker förekommer inom ett flertal branscher och behöver förebyggas för att skydda arbetstagare mot ohälsa, sjukdom och olycksfall. Det förebyggande arbetet görs genom att identifierade risker bedöms och kontrolleras med ändamålsenliga åtgärder, med målet att riskerna minskar eller helt försvinner. Att genomföra kemiska riskbedömningar är dock ofta både svårt och komplext med många olika aspekter att beakta och kräver både tid och kunskap. Som ett sätt att förenkla och effektivisera processen kring kemisk riskbedömning önskar Skanska, ett företag inom bygg- och anläggningsbranschen, se över om det är möjligt att återanvända kemiska riskbedömningar. Syftet med detta examensarbete blev därmed att utreda möjligheten i återanvändning av redan genomförda kemiska riskbedömningar där de kemiska produkterna ska användas igen. Utredningen har fokuserat på fördelar, hinder eller svårigheter och förutsättningar för återanvändning. Europeiskt och svenskt regelverk och vetenskaplig litteratur har genomlysts och data har samlats in från intervjuer med olika nyckelpersoner på tre arbetsplatser inom Skanska samt utifrån riskbedömningar av några utsedda produkter. Resultatet har därefter jämförts med svenskt regelverk, för att därigenom dra slutsatser om möjligheten i återanvändning av kemiska riskbedömningar. Examensarbetet har resulterat i slutsatsen att återanvändning av kemiska riskbedömningar bör vara möjlig, under förutsättning att de mallar eller checklistor som används som stöd uppfyller de krav som finns för kemisk riskbedömning. Det behöver säkerställas genom ändamålsenliga rutiner av personal med rätt kompetens om kemiska arbetsmiljörisker. Det behöver också stämmas av att exempelvis arbetssätt, omgivning och tillgången av åtgärder är likvärdiga på den arbetsplats som först genomfört riskbedömningen, och den arbetsplats som därefter återanvänder riskbedömningen, eller att dessa faktorer kan bli likvärdiga genom vidtagna åtgärder. Några risker eller hinder för återanvändning har identifierats. En av de mest framträdande riskerna är att kemiska arbetsmiljörisker förbises i samband med återanvändningen och därigenom också de åtgärder som behöver vidtas. Orsaker till detta kan vara bristande kunskap och engagemang eller möjligen fusk och slarv. I situationer där arbete ska ske med farligare kemiska produkter kan det vara svårare med återanvändning av riskbedömningar. Några fördelar med återanvändning bedöms vara förkortad tidsåtgång för kemiska riskbedömningar, en effektivare hantering, samt ett ökat stöd och lärande om kemiska arbetsmiljörisker genom att man lär av varandra och tidigare riskbedömningar. Möjligen kan återanvändning också bidra till att fler riskbedömningar genomförs, för att därigenom trygga yrkesarbetarnas säkerhet och hälsa. Chemical risks in the work environment occur in several industries, and need to be prevented to protect workers from ill-health, illness and accidents. By performing risk assessments and taking appropriate measures, it is possible to reach the goal to reduce or even eliminate chemical risks. However, performing chemical risk assessments is often a quite difficult and complex issue with several different aspects to consider, requiring both time and knowledge. As a way to simplify and streamline the process of chemical risk assessment, Skanska, a company within the construction industry, wants to investigate whether it is possible to reuse chemical risk assessments. The purpose of this thesis was thus to investigate the possibility of reusing already performed chemical risk assessments in situations where the chemical products will be used again. The investigation has focused on the advantages, obstacles or difficulties and prerequisites for reuse. European and Swedish regulations and scientific literature have been reviewed and data have been collected from interviews with managers, safety representatives and employees at three workplaces at Skanska and from performed risk assessments of some selected products. Thereafter, the results have been compared with Swedish regulations, in order to draw conclusions about the possibility of reusing chemical risk assessments. The conclusion is that it should be possible to reuse chemical risk assessments, provided that the templates or checklists used as a support meet the requirements for chemical risk assessments. This needs to be ensured through appropriate routines by personnel with the right expertise about chemical risks in the work environment. It must also be ensured that some factors, as way of working, the work environment and measures taken, need to be similar for the workplace first performing the risk assessment, and the workplace that will reuse the same risk assessment, or at least that these factors can become similar after measures taken. Some risks or obstacles of reusing chemical risk assessments have been identified. One of the most prominent risks is that chemical hazards will be missed and thereby also the measures that need to be taken. This may be due to lack of knowledge and commitment or possibly cheating or carelessness. In situations where more hazardous chemical products are being used, it may be more difficult to reuse risk assessments. Some benefits of reusing risk assessments may be less time required for chemical risk assessments, more efficient management and increased support and learning about chemical hazards by learning from each other and previous risk assessments. Possibly, reuse can also contribute to more risk assessments being carried out, thereby ensuring the safety and health of professional workers.

Metadebates concerning how the news media deal with extremism have intensified in the digital media landscape. This article analyzes metajournalistic discourse following a controversial studio interview with the spokesperson of a Norwegian Salafi-jihadist group. To illuminate how boundaries of appropriate public debate are negotiated, the article analyzes how this journalistic performance was debated among journalists and commentators, news sources, and readers in online comments sections. The study demonstrates how editorial legacy media invite a broad metadebate but control and define the debate by positioning themselves as defenders against extremism, evoking normative ideals of the role of journalism in democracy and foregrounding the preventive, clarifying, and cohesive effects of including extremist voices. News sources and online commenters are notably more critical, emphasizing the negative consequences of inclusion and warning that inclusion may serve to consolidate extremist views, amplify threats and prejudice, and make extremists the symbolic representatives of Muslims in general. Theoretically, the article contributes to the literature on media and extremism, media criticism, and mediated negotiations of the boundaries of public debate.

BackgroundSocial emotional learning programs have been found to lead to immediate improvements in cognitive, social and emotional competences. Meanwhile, most evidence to date refers to the United States, and most other countries lack locally tailored teaching materials for socio-emotional learning. Further, there is a lack of knowledge about which subgroups benefit more. Such knowledge is important, because it could provide evidence relevant for both explaining and addressing inequality in educational achieving across subgroups of pupils. Knowledge about longer-term impacts on academic achievement is also called for. This protocol describes an experimental evaluation of a recently developed social emotional learning program implemented in Denmark. The evaluation combines survey data with register-based data, where the latter source allows for tracking of participant outcomes with minimal risk of attrition

BACKGROUND: Continuity of care is important for child well-being in all settings where postnatal retention of mother-infant pairs in care remains a challenge. This analysis reports on completeness of patient-held infant Road to Health Booklets (RtHBs), amongst HIV exposed and unexposed infants during the first two years after the RtHB was launched country-wide in South Africa. METHODS: Secondary data were analysed from two nationally representative, cross-sectional surveys, conducted in 2011-12 and 2012-13. These surveys aimed to measure early effectiveness of the national programme for preventing vertical HIV transmission. Participants were eligible for this analysis if they were 4-8 weeks old, receiving their six-week immunisation, not needing emergency care and had their RtHBs reviewed. Caregivers were interviewed and data abstracted from RtHBs. RtHB completeness across both surveys was defined as the proportion of RtHBs with any of the following indicators recorded: infant birth weight, BCG immunisation, maternal syphilis results and maternal HIV status. A partial proportional odds logistic regression model was used to identify factors associated with completeness. Survey sampling weights were included in all analyses. RESULTS: Data from 10?415 (99.6%) participants in 2011-12 and 9529 (99.2%) in 2012-13 were analysed. Overall, recording of all four indicators increased from 23.1% (95% confidence interval (CI) ?=?22.2-24.0) in 2011-12 to 43.3% (95% CI?=?42.3-44.4) in 2012-13. Denne rapporten belyser hvordan medienes vinklinger og formater påvirker lokal helsedebatt og helsepolitikk. Den diskuterer særlig hvordan ulike kilder og strategiske aktører aktivt søker å prege mediedekningen for å endre beslutninger i enkeltsaker og overordnede prioriteringer i kommunale helse- og omsorgstjenester. Gjennom dybdeanalyser av tre caser som alle omhandler kommunale helse- og omsorgstilbud, viser vi hvordan medieoppslag med lokalt utgangspunkt setter dagsorden for lokale helsemyndigheter, men også løftes opp på den nasjonale politiske dagsorden.
