Abstract

In this work, nanocomposites based on liquid crystalline (LC) elastomers were prepared and characterized in their shape memory properties. For the synthesis of materials, p-bis(2,3-epoxypropoxy)-α-methylstilbene (DOMS) was used as mesogenic epoxy monomer, sebacic acid (SA) as curing agent and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and graphene oxide (GO) as fillers. First, an effective compatibilization methodology was set up to improve the interfacial adhesion between the matrix and the carbonaceous nanofillers, thus obtaining homogeneous distribution and dispersion of the nanofillers within the polymer phase. Then, the obtained nanocomposite films were characterized in their morphological and thermal properties. In particular, the effect of the addition of the nanofillers on liquid crystalline behavior, as well as on shape-memory properties of the realized materials was investigated. It was found that both fillers were able to enhance the thermomechanical response of the LC elastomers, making them good candidates as shape memory materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The effect of Lonidamine (LND) alone or combined with the antiestrogen Tamoxifen (TAM) or Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) on cell proliferation and steroid hormone receptor content of a human estrogen sensitive breast cancer cell line was investigated. LND has a direct growth inhibitory action, even if used at relatively low concentrations (10(-7) M), and shows the maximum effect at 10(-4) M. The combination of LND with the antiestrogen does not produce a potentiation of the TAM-induced reduction of cell number, while the association of the drug with MPA seems more effective with respect to MPA alone, at least at certain concentrations. The negative interference observed between LND and TAM may be due to the LND-induced decrease of estrogen receptor levels.

Abstract

Introducción: La nutrición clínica se ha ido implantando paulatinamente en los diferentes Centros de Atención Sanitaria a nivel nacional siguiendo la experiencia de otros países como Francia, Canadá, Gran Bretaña, y Estados Unidos. Por tanto nos planteamos en nuestro trabajo determinar la situación funcional y recursos de las Unidades de Nutrición de los Hospitales de la red pública(SACYL) de la Comunidad de Castilla y León. Material y métodos: Se realizó una encuesta (fig. 1), remitida a todos los Hospitales de la red pública de la Comunidad de Castilla y León (SACYL). La encuesta fue remitida a los Hospitales de nuestra Comunidad; Hospital Universitario Río Hortega, Hospital Clinico Universitario, Hospital Comarcal de Medina del Campo, Hospital General Yagüe-Divino Vallés (Burgos), Complejo Hospitalario de León, Hospital General de Segovia, Hospital Virgen de Sonsoles de Ávila, Hospital Virgen de la Concha de Zamora, Hospital Comarcal de Aranda de Duero, Hospital Comarcal de Miranda, Hospital General de Soria, Hospital Clínico Universitario de Salamanca. Resultados: Del total de 12 Hospitales encuestados contestaron nueve, realizándose el estudio con estos Centros y considerando representativa la muestra al suponer un 75% de los encuestados. Un total de 5 Hospitales reconocía disponer de una Unidad de Nutrición clínica estructurada(55,6%). Los resultados muestran una media de 0,37± 0,55 especialista por cada 400 camas, 0,87 ± 0,63 enfermera por cada 400 camas y 1,91 ± 2,3 auxiliar por cada 400 camas, con una media de 0,21 ± 0,41 especialista por 100.000 habitantes, 0,49 ± 0,36 enfermera por 100.000 habitantes y 1,09 ± 1,2 auxiliares por 100.000 habitantes La actividad asistencial de estas Unidades se ve reflejada a modo de interconsulta desde otras Unidades o Servicios, recibiendo una media de 3,2 ± 3,4 interconsultas/día. La principal patología que motiva la realización de una interconsulta a una Unidad de Nutrición es en el 33,3% de los Centros patología tumoral, en el 55,6% cirugía programada y en el 11,1% patología neurológica. Siendo la principal intervención la utilización de un suplemento. Solo 3 centros (33,3%) tienen estructurada una consulta monográfica de nutrición. Estos 3 centros presentan un programa de seguimiento de nutrición artificial domiciliaria, siendo la patología que con más frecuencia motiva la inclusión de un paciente en el programa de nutrición artificial domiciliaria es la patología postquirúrgica(33,3%) y patología tumoral (33,3%), en segundo lugar la patología neurológica (22%) y por último patología inflamatoria digestiva (11%). Conclusión: La dotación de recursos estructurales y humanos en las Unidades de Castilla y León son escasos.No obstante la actividad asistencial a nivel hospitalario e intrahospitalario, presenta un perfil similar al de otras áreas de nuestro entorno. Son necesarios esfuerzos por parte de la Administración para poder seguir las recomendaciones del Consejo Europeo. The aim of our work was to determine activity and resources of Nutrition Units of Hospitals in the Community of Castilla y León. Results: Nine Centres responded questionnaire (75%).A total of 5 Hospitals had a Unit of Nutrition (55.6%). The results showed an average of 0.37 ± 0.55 specialists for each 400 beds, 0.87 ± 0.63 nurses for each 400 beds and 1.91 ± 2.3 auxiliaries for each 400 beds, with an average of 0.21 ± 0.41 specialists for each 100,000 habitants, 0.49 ± 0.36 nurses for each 100,000 habitants and 1.09 ± 1.2 auxiliaries for each 100,000 habitants. The activity of these Units is demanded by other Units,with an average of 3.2 ± 3.4 consultations per day. The main diseases of this activity were 33.3% tumoral pathology, 55.6% surgery and 11.1% neurological pathology.Oral supplements were the first intervention tool. Only 3 Centres had a home artificial nutrition consultation. The main diseases of this activity were post surgical patients (33,3%), tumoral pathology (33,3%), neurological pathology (22%) and inflammatory bowel disease (11%). Conclusion: Resources in Units of Nutrition of Castilla y Leon were limited. However, activity in Hospital an in home is equal than other areas. New actions of Local Administration are necessaries to follow recommendations of Council of Europe.

Abstract

In ischaemic stroke, thrombolytic drugs speed the recanalisation of intracerebral arteries. The effects of aspirin are not known. A trial was conducted to determine whether, separately or together, streptokinase and aspirin have clinical benefits in acute ischaemic stroke similar to those in acute myocardial infarction. 622 patients with acute ischaemic stroke within 6 hours of symptom onset were randomised with a 2x2 factorial design to (i) a 1-hour intravenous infusion of 1 . 5 MU streptokinase, (ii) 300 mg/day buffered aspirin for 10 days, (iii) both active treatments, or (iv) neither. Early results raised a question whether the trial should be continued. Abstract

This study aims at evaluating the mastery level of effective teaching for teachers in inclusive schools in Jordan, and to investigate the differences in this level of mastery according to the variables of teacher qualification and experience. The study followed the descriptive survey approach, where the study sample consisted of (50) male and female teachers from the inclusive schools in Amman, and their teaching performance was observed using an observation card consisting of 38 phrases, distributed over three dimensions: planning, teaching and classroom management, and evaluation. The results indicated that the mean score of the teaching and classroom management dimension only was more than the assumed cutoff degree, and the difference between them is statistically significant at the level (α = 0.05), while there is no statistical significance for the rest of the dimensions means as well as for the total score. The findings also showed that there were statistically significant differences in the mastery of teaching with respect to specialization in favor of teachers majoring in education. Further, the findings showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the mastery of teaching due to experience. The study sheds light on the necessity of activating the role of educational supervision and training courses for in-service teachers, especially in the areas of planning and evaluation of the teaching-learning proces.

Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate the thermophysiological, haematological, biochemical and behavioural stress responses of sheep transported on road. A total of 44 Chamarita breed adult ewes were randomly allotted to one of two groups, one control group (untransported) and transported group (journey of 4 h), and blood stress indicators were measured 1 day before transport and at four time points post-transport (0, 4 and 24 h). Thermophysiological profiles of ewes were measured by temperature buttons ( iButton Thermochron®) and placed in intravaginal sponges. Direct observations, with a combination of scan and behaviour sampling, were carried out to collect information on individual behaviour and the time it took the ewes to drink water, eat and rest after returning to their pen respectively. Transported ewes lost approximately 1 kg live weight compared to controls and had higher body temperatures until 12 h post-transport. Cortisol, glucose, non-esterified fatty acid ( NEFA) concentrations as well as the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (N/L) and other physiological indicators were higher immediately after unloading in transported ewes but mostly returned to normal after 4 h, with complete recovery after 24 h. Behavioural analysis post-transport demonstrated that transported ewes chose to eat before drinking and spent less time resting than controls in the first 3 h after unloading. The study demonstrates that transportation even under short-journey conditions induced behavioural, physiological and thermophysiological responses indicative of the induction of significant stress, leading to live weight shrinkage that may jeopardize farmer's incomes. 146. Blood pressure response to commonly administered antihypertensives for severe inpatient hypertension.

Abstract

BackgroundBlood pressure (BP) elevations are commonly treated in hospitalized patients; however, treatment is not guideline directed. Our objective was to assess BP response to commonly prescribed antihypertensives after the development of severe inpatient hypertension (HTN).MethodsThis is a cohort study of adults, excluding intensive care unit patients, within a single healthcare system admitted for reasons other than HTN who developed severe HTN (systolic BP>180 or diastolic BP >110 mmHg at least 1 hour after admission). We identified the most commonly administered antihypertensives given within 6 hours of severe HTN (given to >10% of treated patients). We studied the association of treatment with each antihypertensive vs. no treatment on BP change in the 6 hours following severe HTN development using mixed-effects model after adjusting for demographics and clinical characteristics.ResultsAmong 23,147 patients who developed severe HTN, 9,166 received antihypertensive treatment. The most common antihypertensives given were oral metoprolol (n = 1991), oral amlodipine (n = 1812), oral carvedilol (n = 1116), IV hydralazine (n = 1069) and oral hydralazine (n = 953). In the fully adjusted model, treatment with IV hydralazine led to 13 [-15.9, -10.1], 18 [-22.2, -14] and 11 [-14.1, -8.3] mmHg lower MAP, SBP, and DBP in the 6 hours following severe HTN development compared to no treatment. Treatment with oral hydralazine and oral carvedilol also resulted in significantly lower BPs in the 6 hours following severe HTN development (6 [-9.1, -2.1 and -7 [-9.1, -4.2] lower MAP, respectively) compared to no treatment. Receiving metoprolol and amlodipine did not result in a drop in BP compared to no treatment.ConclusionAmong commonly used antihypertensives, IV hydralazine resulted in the most significant drop in BP following severe HTN, while metoprolol and amlodipine did not lower BP. Further research to assess the effect of treatment on clinical outcomes and if needed which antihypertensives to administer are necessary.

Abstract

Schimke immunoosseous dysplasia (SIOD) is an autosomal recessive multisystem disorder characterized by prominent spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, T cell deficiency, and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. Biallelic mutations in swi/snf-related, matrix-associated, actin-dependent regulator of chromatin, subfamily a-like 1 (SMARCAL1) are the only identified cause of SIOD, but approximately half of patients referred for molecular studies do not have detectable mutations in SMARCAL1. We hypothesized that skeletal features distinguish between those with or without SMARCAL1 mutations. Therefore, we analyzed the skeletal radiographs of 22 patients with and 11 without detectable SMARCAL1 mutations. We found that patients with SMARCAL1 mutations have a spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia (SED) essentially limited to the spine, pelvis, capital femoral epiphyses, and possibly the sella turcica, whereas the hands and other long bones are basically normal. Additionally, we found that several of the adolescent and young adult patients developed osteoporosis and coxarthrosis. Of the 11 patients without detectable SMARCAL1 mutations, seven had a SED indistinguishable from patients with SMARCAL1 mutations. We conclude therefore that SED is a feature of patients with SMARCAL1 mutations and that skeletal features do not distinguish who of those with SED have SMARCAL1 mutations.

Abstract

The SLIT2 receptor ROBO2 plays a key role in the formation of the ureteric bud, and its inactivation in mice leads to supernumerary ureteric bud development, lack of ureter remodeling, and improper insertion of the ureters into the bladder. Recently, two heterozygous ROBO2 missense mutations were identified in two families with primary vesicoureteral reflux occurring in combination with congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (VUR/CAKUT). This study investigated a possible causal role of ROBO2 gene variants in 95 unrelated patients with primary VUR (n = 78) or VUR/CAKUT. Eighty-two percent of all patients had a family history of genitourinary anomalies. Twenty-four ROBO2 gene variants were identified by direct sequencing of all 26 exons and the exon-intron boundaries. Of these, four led to amino acid substitutions: Gly328Ser, Asn515lle, Asp766Gly, and Arg797Gln. When the families were examined, the missense variants co-segregated with VUR (three families) or VUR/CAKUT (one family). These variants were not found in 190 control subjects, and the affected amino acids have been conserved through evolution. In conclusion, a relatively high frequency of ROBO2 variants (5.1%) was found in familial cases; however, functional studies and validation in other cohorts are warranted. Copyright

Abstract

Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is the most common disease of the urinary tract in children. In order to identify gene(s) involved in this complex disorder, we performed a genome-wide search in a selected sample of 31 patients with primary VUR from eight families originating from southern Italy. Sixteen additional families with 41 patients were included in a second stage. Nonparametric, affected-only linkage analysis identified four genomic areas on chromosomes 1, 3, and 4 (p < 0.05); the best result corresponded to the D3S3681-D3S1569 interval on chromosome 3 (nonparametric linkage score, NPL = 2.75, p = 0.008). This region was then saturated with 26 additional markers, tested in the complete group of 72 patients from 24 families (NPL = 2.01, p = 0.01). We identified a genomic area on 3q22.2-23, where 26 patients from six multiplex families shared overlapping haplotypes. However, we did not find evidence for a common ancestral haplotype. The region on chromosome 1 was delimited to 1p36.2-34.3 (D1S228-D1S255, max. NPL = 1.70, p = 0.03), after additional fine typing. Furthermore, on chromosome 22q11.22-12.3, patients from a single family showed excess allele sharing (NPL = 3.35, p = 0.015). Only the chromosome 3q region has been previously reported in the single genome-wide screening available for primary VUR. Our results suggest the presence of several novel loci for primary VUR, giving further evidence for the genetic heterogeneity of this disorder.
