- Abstract
Raising cattle in South Africa and any other developing country in the Southern African region as part of livestock production, is one of the important means through which people sustain their livelihood. Inadequate efforts have been taken by the government to improve the marketing system of cattle, particularly to develop small-scale farming in the Limpopo Province and South Africa as a whole. With that being said, the small-scale sector has not been developed to the extent it is expected to. This study examined the factors affecting the participation of small-scale cattle farmers in livestock auctions in the Capricorn District of the Limpopo Province. The study had three objectives, namely; (i) To describe the socio-economic characteristics of the small scale cattle farmers in the Capricorn District of the Limpopo Province; (ii) To assess the perception of small-scale cattle farmers in the Capricorn District of the Limpopo Province towards livestock auction; (iii) To identify and analyse factors affecting the participation of small-scale cattle farmers in livestock auctions in the Capricorn District of the Limpopo Province. The Multi-stage sampling procedure was used in the selection of the representative sample. Three locations (Lepelle-Nkumpi, Molemole and Polokwane local municipalities) were selected purposively because a large number of small-scale cattle farmers in the Capricorn District rely on the agricultural sector economically. The Logistic Regression Model was used to analyse factors affecting the participation of small-scale cattle farmers in livestock auctions. The results showed that, out of the 120 sample size, 42% of small-scale cattle farmers were auction participants and 58% of small-scale cattle farmers were non-participants . There were 43 male-headed households of the participants and 61 female-headed households of the non-participants . An analysis of the farmers ’ socio-economic characteristics further showed that in order for the farmers to

Australian Cattle Price Falls to Nine-Year Low as El Niño Looms (Bloomberg) -- The cost of Australian cattle has tumbled to the lowest level in about nine years and is likely to fall further as ranchers cull an expanded herd ahead of drier weather following the onset of El Niño. In 1800 local livestock fairs and markets in north-east Scotland were traditional open markets held at fixed times of the year. Their number increased in the first half of the nineteenth century as the region's meat industry developed to supply the growing demand of the Scottish and English markets. After 1850 and the appearance of the railways the number of livestock markets grew further and localities competed with each other, sometimes fiercely, to capture the benefits of a new livestock market. These markets, where deals were made privately between individuals, were dominated by local butchers and livestock dealers. This changed from 1870 as open markets gave way to regular livestock auction markets (or marts) conducted by professional auctioneers. Farmers believed that auctions served their interests better than open markets as sales were conducted quickly and in greater comfort, and they could also judge whether buyers were competing fairly. Farmers from the north east became so enthusiastic about this form of sale that they took advantage of the nineteenth-century Company Acts to float their own joint stock limited auction companies, and also take over some of the existing family-run livestock auction markets. In spite of some opposition from butchers and cattle dealers, the auction markets were all very successful and by 1900 had largely replaced the traditional fairs and markets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Correlations of calves' temperament with carcass traits were estimated to clarify the genetic relationships between them in Japanese Black cattle. The temperament records for 3128 calves during auction at a calf market were scored on a scale of 1 (calm) to 5 (nervous) as temperament score ( TS), and the TS were divided into two groups ( TSG): TS 1 and 2 comprised TSG 1, and 3 to 5 constituted TSG 2. Carcass data were obtained from 33 552 fattened cattle. A threshold animal model was used for analyzing the underlying liability for TSG, whereas a linear one was used for TS and carcass traits. The heritability estimates for TS and TSG were 0.12 and 0.11, respectively. On the other hand, moderate to high heritability estimates were obtained for carcass traits (0.40 to 0.68). The temperament scores were negatively correlated with carcass weight, rib thickness and subcutaneous fat thickness (−0.13 to −0.59). In contrast, weak to moderate positive correlations were found between the temperament scores and rib eye area or yield estimate (0.16 to 0.45). The temperament scores and beef marbling score had no correlation. These results showed that it is possible to improve temperament and carcass traits simultaneously. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HORSE racing , *METABOLOMICS , *MASS spectrometry , *RESEARCH questions , *LIVESTOCK ,LIVESTOCK auctions - Abstract
Despite banned for public health, societal and economic reasons, and therefore strictly regulated, growth promoters can still be used in farm animals to increase production yields or in racing animals to enhance their performance. The introduction of specific regulations has led to the establishment of control systems, in particular through the development of analytical methods to detect doping practices. Although high-performance analytical strategies, most often based on targeted mass spectrometry approaches, are implemented in testing laboratories, some challenges still remain, particularly those specifically implemented to circumvent controls (e.g. the use of natural hormones, low-dose cocktails, or the use of new synthetic drugs). To overcome some limitations of these targeted methods and to deal with some difficult cases, especially at the critical screening stage, a new strategy emerged in the early 20s: the investigation of effect biomarkers, based on non-targeted profiling involving genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics approaches for a global analysis of genes, RNAs, proteins and endogenous metabolites, respectively, as potential biomarkers of interest. With hindsight now, metabolomics is recognized the most promising area to highlight biomarkers related to animal doping and their subsequent monitoring in a control perspective. Several studies have already demonstrated the proof of concept of the metabolomics-based workflow and its suitability for alternative screening for a range of growth promoters (e.g., β -agonists, steroids) but also various species (e.g., bovine, horse), it is now time to move on to a robust implementation for monitoring purpose. In particular, the next research question in metabolomics is how to validate resulting non-targeted methods and transfer to routine frameworks, complying standards and regulatory expectations. This state of the art aims at providing an overview of the evolution of screening methods, from direct strategies targeting exposure biomarkers to indirect methods looking for new effect biomarkers based on semi-targeted or non-targeted methods. With the official implementation of these innovative effect biomarkers-based screening strategies in mind, this review article also aims to detail, the metabolomics workflow and best practices from sample preparation to the evaluation of performances of such approaches and ways to validate the corresponding methods. • Review on the evolution of anabolic agent screening strategies in horseracing and food safety. • State of the art of current screening methods based on targeted strategies. • Challenges associated to direct exposure biomarkers screening. • Metabolomics as a new strategy for doping control in animals. • Towards official implementation of new screening tools based on metabolomics studies. Sen. "Allowing livestock auction owners to invest in local and regional meat packers will expedite the safe processing of meat, increase competition within the industry, and, ultimately, lower meat costs for consumers." Related: Livestock auction investments allowed under A-PLUS bill "It should be a no-brainer to cut bureaucratic red tape, eliminate outdated regulations that are hindering the livestock industry, and increase processing capacity", says Ernst.
