Flavonoid aglycones were identified from Vicia faba L. seed coats corresponding to eight genetically determined colors. Myricetin predominates over quercetin in beige, black, brown, green, red, and violet seeds. Kaempferol is present in substantial amounts only in spotted seeds. White seeds have only trace amounts of quercetin and kaempferol and are the only ones without proanthocyanidins. Flavones of the apigenin type occur in all colors but white. Anthocyanins (malvidin, delphinidin, petunidin, and cyanidin glycosides) are present only in violet seeds and are obviously responsible for their color. The dark colors of black, brown, and red seeds apparently result from unidentified polymers. It is concluded that the two loci, a and b, proposed by Ricciardi et al. (1985) as the sites of genetic control of seed-coat color, control the amount and type of flavonoids produced: locus a that of flavonoid monomers (flavonols, etc.) and locus b that of flavonoid polymers (condensed tannins).

Equilibration and washout curves of inulin were determined in isolated rat papillary muscles. Inulin uptake did not reach a steady-state value even after a long equilibration time. The effects of contractile activity were investigated. Isometric contractions increased the rate of inulin uptake and washout. In isotonic conditions, a smaller increase in the uptake and washout was observed. These changes could be attributed to an actual increase of inulin distribution space and/or to an accelerated diffusion kinetics.

First and second-order approximations to the first passage time conditional probability density function of a stationary Gaussian process, with differentiable sample paths crossing a time-dependent boundary, are explicitly provided. In the limit of infinitely large time, our results coincide with the well-known results of Kac and Rice for the constant level-crossing problem.

A series of 48 wrist fractures treated with external fixation is reviewed. It is stressed that the external fixator allows nursing care and treatment of soft tissue lesions without compromising reduction of the fractures. The authors suggest application of external fixation to wrist fractures in all patients with comminuted fractures of son tissue problems.

The load sensitivity of the relaxation phase was studied in rat papillary muscle, with isotonic afterloaded contractions and stretches applied after the peak of isometric twitches. The tension decay occurred earlier in isotonic than in isometric contractions. When a central region of the preparation was marked with small stainless steel pins, a lengthening of this region could be shown during relaxation of isometric (fixed end) contractions. This lengthening was earlier and faster in isotonic afterloaded contractions. Therefore the sensitivity of relaxation to load or length changes could be described in the context of the general mechanism of relaxation which takes into account the non uniform behaviour of the muscle and the internal movement during contractions. Interventions which decelerate the activation decay rate had different effects on the load dependence of relaxation. Caffeine addition and substitution of strontium for calcium abolished the load sensitivity while a temperature reduction had no influence on it.

A parallel investigation on collagen content and diastolic mechanical properties has been performed on myocardial specimens isolated from male albino Wistar rats of different age groups (1-5 days, 10-20 days, 2 months, 8 months, 18 months, 24-26 months). Total water content, inulin-distribution space, protein concentration were determined together with hydroxyprolin content of the tissue. Mechanical properties of isolated papillary muscles were characterized in terms of static, dynamic, and plastic response to strain. During maturation (from birth to 2 months) the increase of collagen content is paralleled by an increase of static elasticity and by a reduction of plasticity. During maturity (2-8 months) and ageing (8-26 months) the collagen concentration in myocardial tissue still increases, but this change is associated to a reduction of the static components and to an increase of dynamic components of myocardial stiffness. A comparison between specimens from right and left ventricular myocardium indicates that a higher collagen content in the right ventricle is associated with a higher static elasticity.

The possibilities of ultrasonography demonstrating periosteal callus and osteogenesis at the fracture focus are described. Illustrative cases are presented and the advantages of this technique are discussed. It is emphasized that ultrasonography is a noninvasive technique that may be repeated as often as is necessary. It provides images of appositional periosteal callus much earlier than radiography, thus facilitating early evaluation of the treatment employed.

Energy expenditure was evaluated for 6 Basket players while exercising on a cyclergometer. Oxygen consumption (VO2), pulmonary ventilation (VE), heart rate (HR), respiratory quotient (QR) and other parameters were estimated at various levels of load (25 Watt each step of 3 minutes duration), till to submaximal load of 175 Watt. The same subjects participate to a regular Basket game and their heart rate was continuously stored on a tape recorder (Holter). Arterial blood pressure was also taken whenever possible (timeout, etc). From the laboratory and field data, estimates were made for the oxygen consumption together with energy cost of the game. This can be assume a net value of 0.1339 Kcal X Kg-1 X min-1.

In order to estimate wave propagation "in vitro", aortic compliance has been studied by means of rings and stripes from 6 adult male Wistar rats. Lengthening and shortening maneuvres have been performed; the pulse transmission rate was evaluated by calculating the elastic modulus during the maneuvres. A Norepinephrine infusion has been done. Results obtained show that transmission rate is higher in shortening than in lengthening phases. Norepinephrine did not significantly affect the values. The rate values were not greatly different whether "in vitro" or "in vivo". By increasing specimen stress, the rate too was increased, but the amount was lower than "in vivo" values. Hence it was assumable that rate variations "in vivo", should be partially influenced by elastic modulus, and a vegetative intervention should be implied.

In isolated cardiac and skeletal muscle inulin space increased significantly after isometric contractions: no significant change (in myocardium) or a less pronounced increase (in skeletal preparations) was found following isotonic responses. The HTO space was uninfluenced by the contractile activity.

Shortening deactivation is studied in isolated preparations of rat cardiac muscle by comparing tension redevelopment in partially fused isometric contractions with quick releases of different extent ("control" and "test" displacements). The active shortening takes place during the ascending phase of the 1st contraction of the couple and the comparison of redeveloped tension is carried out at the peaks of both 1st and 2nd contractions. The depressant effect of active shortening can be demonstrated at the 1st peak and also at the 2nd one, after the restimulation of the muscle. This effect slowly decreases with time and disappears within approximately one second after active shortening took place. By keeping constant the control shortening and changing the test shortening, a clear dependence of depressant effect on the amount of displacement can be shown in the 1st and in the 2nd contraction.

The authors carried out an experimental study to quantify the stability of monolateral fixation devices of the Hoffmann type. The technical tests indicated that changes were needed in the geometry of the devices; these were achieved by designing a junction piece which enables the transfixion pins and the smooth stabilization rod to remain in the same plane, while leaving the rest of the instrumentation unchanged. The use of this component makes the fixation device more stable and lighter than the classic monolateral devices commonly used. It also prevents the separation and rotation of the fragments that can occur when rods not in the same plane are subjected to compression.

In order to investigate internal shortening effects upon time course of active state, a study on rat papillary muscle has been carried out. Internal (or CE) shortening was evaluated according to a mechanical muscle model in which parallel elastic (PE), series elastic (SE), contractile (CE) elements are represented. CE force-velocity-shortening-time relationships have been used to describe time course of muscle active state in isometric, completely isotonic, afterloaded, and stopped isotonic contractions. The results obtained suggest that, regardless of type of contraction utilized, the parameters of muscle active state are strongly influenced by the amount of CE shortening.

When caffeine plus calcium is added to the perfusing medium, isometric relaxation of rat myocardium is no longer affected by length changes occurring during the twitch. The dependence of isometric relaxation on the initial muscle length is still present and more pronounced after caffeine addition.

A non-linear rheological model has been used to represent mathematically the behaviour of isolated quiescent preparations of rat myocardium. The parameters have been identified by means of numerical methods and the experimental responses of the specimens to several stress or strain histories have been predicted by the model. Results obtained show that the model has a good predictive ability and can discriminate among the responses of specimens with different mechanical behaviour (papillary muscles of young and aged rats and papillary muscles contractured in hypertonic solutions).

The effect of active shortening on tension development has been studied in rat papillary muscle preparations at 20 degrees C. Total tension at the peak of a contraction with a shortening phase is reduced below the value predicted by the isometric length-tension relationship. At the same instantaneous length, total tension is less in contractions with an isotonic phase than in isometric responses and the amount of the tension deficit increases with the extent of shortening. The influence of the time at which shortening takes place, on the amount of tension deficit, has been explored. The increase in [Ca2+]o does not affect the tension deficit. Conversely an increase in [Ca2+]o associated to addition of caffeine to the bathing solution almost abolished the effect of active shortening on tension development. Several possible explanations of the reduction of tension development by shortening are discussed.

The relation between peak force (F) during contraction, velocity of shortening (V) and sarcomere length (SL) determine cardiac pump function. We have studied the factors that control force and velocity of shortening were studied in trabeculae dissected from normal or hypertrophied right ventricles of rats in modified Krebs-Henseleit solution at 26 C, in which Ca2+ or pH was varied. Hypertrophy (H) was induced by triiodothyronine injections (Ht), by vigorous physical exercise during swimming (Hs) or by hypobaric hypoxia (Hh).

The effect of stretch on the time-course of relaxation has been investigated in rat papillary muscle. In control conditions, a quick stretch carried out at or after the peak of an isometric twitch promotes an earlier and faster relaxation. Following inotropic interventions which decelerate the activation decay rate (caffeine addition and Ca2+ replacement with Sr2+) the onset and time-course of relaxation are unaffected by the stretch.

To investigate the extent to which the properties of the cardiac myofibrils contribute to the length-force relation of cardiac muscle, we determined the sarcomere length-force relations for rat ventricular trabeculae both before and after the muscles were skinned with the detergent Triton X-100. Sarcomere length was measured continuously by laser diffraction. In the unskinned trabeculae stimulated at 0.2 Hz, the relation between active force and sarcomere length at an extracellular calcium concentration of 1.5 mM was curved away from the sarcomere length axis, with zero force at sarcomere length of 1.5-1.6 micron. At 0.3 mM calcium, the sarcomere length-force relation was curved toward the sarcomere length axis. Chemical skinning of the muscle with 1% Triton X-100 in a "relaxing solution" caused an increase in intensity and decrease in dispersion of the first order diffraction beam, indicating an increased uniformity of sarcomere length in the relaxed muscle. During calcium-regulated contractures in the skinned muscles, the central sarcomeres shortened by up to 20%. As the calcium concentration was increased over the range 1-50 microM, the relation between steady calcium-regulated force and sarcomere length shifted to higher force values and changed in shape in a manner similar to that observed for changes in extracellular calcium concentration before skinning. The sarcomere length-force relations for the intact muscles at an extracellular calcium concentration of 1.5 mM were similar to the curves at calcium concentration of 8.9 microM in the skinned preparations, whereas the curves at an extracellular calcium concentration of 0.3 mM in intact muscles fell between the relations at calcium concentrations of 2.7 and 4.3 microM in the skinned preparations. A factor contributing to the shape of the curves in the skinned muscle at submaximal calcium concentrations was that the calcium sensitivity of force production increased with increasing sarcomere length. The calcium concentration required for 50% activation decreased from 7.71 +/- 0.52 microM to 3.77 +/- 0.33 microM for an increase of sarcomere length from 1.75 to 2.15 micron. The slope of the force-calcium concentration relation increased from 2.82 to 4.54 with sarcomere length between 1.75 and 2.15 micron. This change in calcium sensitivity was seen over the entire range of sarcomere lengths corresponding to the ascending limb of the cardiac length-force relation. It is concluded that the properties of the cardiac contractile machinery (including the length-dependence of calcium sensitivity) can account for much of the shape of the ascending limb in intact cardiac muscle.

A coprological survey was carried out in 1982-1983 in East Boè and in Canhabaque Island, (Bijagòs Islands), where 289 and 288 specimens of stools, respectively, have been collected. The samples were taken from apparently healthy subjects, of both sexes and of different age groups. The tests were made according to the modified Ritchie technique. The following results were obtained: A) East Boè: 1) Protozoa: E. coli 68.9%, E. nana 24.6%, G. intestinalis 8.7%, I. buetschlii 5.9%, E. histolytica 1.7%, E. hartmanni 0.7%, T. intestinalis 0.7%. b) Helminths: Ancylostomatidae 69.2%, T. trichiura 38.4%, S. stercoralis 6.2%, Taenia sp. 1.7%, H. nana 0.7%, S. haematobium 0.7%, S. mansoni 0.7%, S. fuelleborni 0.7%. B) Canhabaque: a) Protozoa: E. coli 85.1%, I. buetschlii 14.9%, E. nana 12.5%, G. intestinalis 8.3%, C. mesnili 7.3%, E. hartmanni 1.4%, E. histolytica 1.0%, T. intestinalis 0.4%. b) Helminths: Ancylostomatidae 87.9%, T. trichiura 9.4%, S. stercoralis 7.9%, S. fuelleborni 2.8%, Trichostrongylus sp. 1.4%, A. lumbricoides 0.7%, H. nana 0.4%. Eggs of Capillaria sp. probably pseudoparasites, were found in 8.7% of samples. The high prevalence of Ancylostomatidae infections appears to be related to the heavy fecal pollution all over the examined territory. The utilization of antihelminthic drug of popular medicine, which has a specific action on A. lumbricoides, could explain the lack and the low prevalence, respectively, of A. lumbricoides infections in both examined areas. In the past, other authors emphasized the low prevalence of this parasite for other Guinea Bissau regions which have a different geomorfological constitution. The cases of S. fuelleborni and H. nana are the first reported for Guinea Bissau.

Pulse wave transmission rate has been measured "in vivo" in 6 male anaesthetized Wistar rats, by means of cannulae, inserted both in carotid and femoral arteries. The measure has been done by calculating the time delay of several corresponding levels in the two pressure pulses: at the foot, during the ascending phase, at the peak. Three different intervention have been carried out: Ach, NA, blood transfusion. The transmission rate outcame higher at the pulse foot than at the peak, in control animals and in Ach and blood transfusion interventions. The NA intervention inverted this behaviour, where the increase in transmission rate did not correspond to the rate of pressure growing. The possible influences of a vegetative component on arterial viscoelastic behaviour are discussed.

Isolated atrial and ventricular preparations from rat heart have been compared. In atrial specimens relaxation is faster than in papillary muscles both in isometric and isotonic conditions. In papillary muscles the tension decay occurs earlier in isotonic than isometric contractions and a stretch applied at or after the peak of isometric twitches promotes a faster relaxation: this load dependence of relaxation is less pronounced in atrial specimens. The decay of activation, evaluated from the decline of the muscle shortening ability, is faster in atrium than in ventricle. These findings suggest that the sensitivity of relaxation to the loading conditions might be determined by both the activation decay rate and the cross bridge kinetics.

The anorexia is a frequent cause for paediatric consultation, especially during the first year of life, during which often it is not due to illness or to some organic cause. Particularly interesting from the etiopathogenetic and most of all from the curative point of view are the protracted anorexias in which the relationships mother-child-surroundings appear disturbed. Generally, the loss or the simple reduction of the appetite could heal, all the same and also in a short while if the mother would accept willingly the new situation, trusting in a spontaneous resolution. On the contrary she usually forces the infant to take the meal even if incompletely, meeting at each new attempt, the infant's resistance initially passive and then more and more active and efficacious. Thus an "anorexia for opposition" is established by the conflict between mother and child that the mother stirfs up to then end looser if not even victim. An exemplar in this connection is given by the anorexias of the 16 personal cases extracted from a larger casuistry: infant of age between 40 days and 12 months in the most part of which the anorexia was arisen from different causes (illness from slight infections, the replacement of the human milk with the adapted milk, the weaning, copious rations); in some infants the loss of appetite was without an apparent cause. The anorexia became worse after the mother's reiterated attempts to force the infant to have a meal. During the hospitalization the mother was detained with the son; the giving of the meals was in a first time done by the paramedical personnel with the mother present an then by the mother only. In 14 infants the cyproheptadine was given. Only in a few cases the mothers were treated with anxiolytic. All the cases have been resolve positively.

A new uncemented prosthetic stem based on a screw system is presented. The biomechanical, metallurgic and technical principles on which this innovation is based are discussed. The indication and surgical technique are described and 73 cases are reported. The new stem is easy to apply and makes it possible to regulate anteversion precisely, and above all, to satisfy the preconceived biomechanical requirements. Some cases with a shorter follow-up are included because we allowed a suitable time lapse after our earlier cases before extending our indication. However, there is considerable documentation of screw stems in the literature on the long term toleration of screw stems.

The peripheral factor (PF), i.e. the ratio: artero-venous oxygen extraction to total peripheral resistences, has been studied in a total of 8 professional basket players under controlled work-load conditions. The results obtained by continuous monitoring heart rate, oxygen consumption, pulmonary ventilation, arterial blood pressure etc, have shown that from 0 to 150 watt work-load, the PF increases linearly showing a slope of 83 degrees, whereas from 150 to 200 watt the pendence reduces up to 45 degrees. The absolute value of PF from a resting value of 3.83 mlo2 X min-1 X mmHg-1 increases up to 21,64 (at 150 watt) and to a maximum of 23.45 mlo2 X min-1 X mmHg-1 at 200 watt. The slope of the first range of load (83 degrees) is quite similar to what previously observed in endurance athletes (cyclists) whereas the 45 degrees angular coefficient indicates that the increased energy demand in basket-players can be obtained only with a large cardiac load.

Axenomycins are a new group of macrolide antibiotics isolated from the fermentation broth of Streptomyces lisandri n.sp. They exhibit anthelmintic activity against tapeworms ( Cestoda ). Three different fractions, A, B, and D, have been obtained, the most active fraction being axenomycin D. The activities of the axenomycin complex and axenomycin D against Hymenolepis nana in mice, Taenia pisiformis, Dipylidium caninum , and Diphyllobothrium sp. in dogs, and Moniezia expansa, M. benedeni , and Avitellina centripunctata in lambs were studied in experimentally and naturally infected animals. Axenomycins were effective and well tolerated by the oral route. Worm reduction rates after a single oral dose were 90 to 100% with 5 to 10 mg of axenomycin D/kg and 50 to 100% with 20 mg of axenomycin complex/kg.
