highlights Harald Bohr's role in the spread of the theory of distributions and the award of the Fields medal to Laurent Schwartz, Between 1947 and 1950, Laurent Schwartz (1915-2002) went from being almost unknown outside of France to being an international mathematical celebrity. This paper accounts for Schwartz's rapid ascent by focusing on the social, institutional, and mathematical contexts of his crucial trajectory from Nancy, via Copenhagen, to the world stage, culminating in his 1950 Fields Medal awarded in Cambridge, Massachusetts. We identify, based on new archival findings, the pivotal role of Danish mathematician Harald Bohr along this trajectory. Our analysis reveals the emerging dynamics of early postwar international mathematics, and explains how certain individuals and theories could rise to prominence in this period.

Den anmeldte bog omhandler talbegrebets historie startende med de gamle grækeres sondring mellem tal (dvs naturlige tal) og størrelser (som fx. linjestykker) og forhold mellem disse. Bogen giver en meget læsværdig og historisk subtil fremstilling af den gradvise ophævelse af disse grænser, som ledte til indførelsen og forståelsen af de reelle tal.

The scope of this thesis was to investigate the influence of and the interaction between the creation of new notation and the formation of new concepts throughout the development of calculus from the calculus of Leibniz and Newton to the implementation of the Weierstrassian notation in the work of e.g. Heine and Dini in the late 19th century. This obiviously included the contributions to both notation and formation of concept found in the works of Leibniz, Euler, Cauchy and Weierstrass, as well as the philosophical aspect of the role of the symbols. As philosophical theory I have used the theory of distributed cognition and in particular the extended mind thesis with the perspective on mathematics and mathematical notation. Hence this thesis is a study of a development, which begins in a geometrical setting, where curves were the central objects of investigation. Symbols and variables were associated to these curves in order to help with the calculations. Leibniz clever use of these symbols facilitated a development of the concept into equations with geometric entities, which was developed by Euler into a study of algebraic equation and functions. Euler had a very liberate and unrestricted approach to his use of symbols, which resulted in the weird formal sums of divergent series. This caused a reaction from Cauchy, who began a rigorous approach with his implementation of convergence tests and epsilonic notation. Which again inspired Weierstrass and his followers to a consistent use of the epsilonic notation, which facilitated a distinction between first uniform and pointwize convergence and then a distinction between first uniform and pointwize continuity. By this there arose a need for more symbols and other forms of notation. Thus at the end of the 19 th century both the notation and the concepts of calculus were similar to modern calculus.

Vi viser at drivkræfterne bag funktionsbegrebets udvikling ligger inden for både den rene og den anvendte matematik især fysikken. Vi undersøger hvordan denne historie kan bruges i matematikundervisningen til at få eleverne til at tænke over matematikkens natur., In this paper, we discuss the history of the concept of function and emphasize in particular how problems in physics have led to essential changes in its definition and application in mathematical practices. Euler defined a function as an analytic expression, whereas Dirichlet defined it as a variable that depends in an arbitrary manner on another variable. The change was required when mathematicians discovered that analytic expressions were not sufficient to represent physical phenomena such as the vibration of a string (Euler) and heat conduction (Fourier and Dirichlet). The introduction of generalized functions or distributions is shown to stem partly from the development of new theories of physics such as electrical engineering and quantum mechanics that led to the use of improper functions such as the delta function that demanded a proper foundation. We argue that the development of student understanding of mathematics and its nature is enhanced by embedding mathematical concepts and theories, within an explicit–reflective framework, into a rich historical context emphasizing its interaction with other disciplines such as physics. Students recognize and become engaged with meta-discursive rules governing mathematics. Mathematics teachers can thereby teach inquiry in mathematics as it occurs in the sciences, as mathematical practice aimed at obtaining new mathematical knowledge. We illustrate such a historical teaching and learning of mathematics within an explicit and reflective framework by two examples of student-directed, problem-oriented project work following the Roskilde Model, in which the connection to physics is explicit and provides a learning space where the nature of mathematics and mathematical practices are linked to natural science.

En analyse af argumenter fra 1600-tallet for umuligheden af at kvadrere cirklen. Argumenterne angår først og fremmest umuligheden af at finde et algebraisk udtryk for cirklens kvadratur. Spørgsmålet om det indefinite cirkelkvadratur handler om muligheden af at finde et udtryk for arealet af et vilkårligt sirkeludsnit, medens det definite cirkelkvadratur omhandler arealet af hele cirklen. I artiklen analyseres bidrag af Wallis, Gregory, Leibniz og Newton., The classical problem of the quadrature (or equivalently the rectification) of the circle enjoyed a renaissance in the second half of the 17th century. The new analytic methods provided the means for the discovery of infinite expressions of and for the first attempts to prove impossibility statements related to the quadrature of the circle. In this paper the impossibility arguments put forward by Wallis, Gregory, Leibniz and Newton are analyzed and the controversies they gave rise to are discussed. They all deal with the impossibility of finding an algebraic expression of the area of a sector of a circle in terms of its radius and cord, or of the area of the entire circle. It is argued that the controversies were partly due to a lack of precision in the formulation of the results. The impossibility results were all part of a constructive problem solving mathematical enterprise. They were intended to show that certain solutions of the quadrature problem were the best possible because simpler (analytic) solutions were impossible.

Matematiske umulighedssætninger har undergået en ændring fra metaudsagn til rigtige matematiske kernesætninger. Historien bag denne udvikling er værd at fortælle gymnasieelever fordi den vil klargøre matematikkens natur og vil vise hvordan matematikken kan undersøge sine egne grænser.

Som for mange af hans samtidige var fysik og mekanik en stor inspirationskilde for Liouville's matematiske forskning. Laplaces tilgang til fysik var oprindelsen til Liouvilles teori om differentiation af vilkårlig orden, Kelvins elektrostatiske forskning var oprindelsen til Liouvilles sætning om konforme afbildninger, varmeledningsteori førte til Sturm-Liouville teori og undersøgelser af planeternes form var en vigtig inspiration for Liouville's arbejder om Laméfunktioner og hans upublicerede undersøgelser om det vi med en senere sprogbrug kunne kalde spektralteori for visse integraloperatorer. Endelig var der en gensidig vekselvirkning mellem Liouville's studier af mekanik og differentialgeometri

Artiklen giver en kort beskrivelse af hvordan mekanik påvikrede Liouville's matematiske forskning.

Der argumenteres for at anvendelser i fysik er afgørende i udviklingen af de dele af matematikken, som har været nyttig for beskrivelsen af den fysiske verden. Dermed kastes et nyt lys på Eugine Wigner's 50 år gamle artikel om The unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics. Der gives en række historiske eksempler på fysiks indflydelse på matematik. Derved sættes der spørgsmålstegn ved Wigners opfattelse af matematik som en struktur som udvikles udelukkende med æstetiske kriterier i tankerne.

Der argumenteres for at vekselvirkningen mellem matematik og fysik ikke er velbeskrevet ved sprogbrugen "anvendelse af matematik i fysik". Når matematik møder fysik ændres begge områder. Der gives en række eksempler på hvordan vekselvirkningen mellem de to fag har udviklet matematikken. Eksemplerne er taget fra Liouvilles matematik, Heinrich Hertz's mekanik og distributionsteoriens udvikling.

De to klassiske problemer: terningens fordobling og vinklens tredeling er umulige med passer og lineal. Dette resultat tilskrives normalt til Pierre Wantzel (1837). Der var dog tidligere matematikere, som mente at de havde bevist denne umulighed. I artiklen analyseres tre af disse tidligere beviser: Descartes' (1637) Montuclas (1754) og Condorcets (1775). Det konkluderes at disse tidlige beviser indeholder mange gode ideer, som indgår i det moderne bevis, bl.a. oversættelsen af problemet til algebra og ideen om at der er en sammenhæng mellem konstruktion med passer og lineal og løsning af andengradsligninger. Beviserne manglede dog en korrekt oversættelse til algebra af passer og linealkonstruktion, samt de præ-Galois-teoretiake metoder som blev udviklet omkring 1800.. Udgivelsesdato: February 2010

Wantzel's bevis for umuligheden af konstruktion af terningens fordobling og vinklens tredeling (1837) analyseres. Der argumenteres for at en af grundene til at artiklen ikke blev kendt i de følgende 100 år var at den slags umulighedsudsagn ikke var centrale i den matematikopfattelse, som stadig var fremherskende på Wantzel's tid, hvor problemløsning var mere central end begrebsafklaring. In this paper I shall analyze the reasons for this neglect andargue that it was primarily due to the lack of importance attributed to such impossibility results at the time.

Det argumenteres for at det er muligt at tilgodese kernefagligheden i både matematik og historie uden at det fører til at projektemnet knækker over i en historiedel og en matematikdel. Det kræver blot at vejlederne fortolker kernefagligheden lige så bredt som den er formuleret i bekendtgørelserne.Der slås til lyd for smalle emner, hvorimod der argumenteres for at fremstilling af litteratur om særligt populære emner ikke er vejen frem. Mange matematiske sætninger udtaler at noget er umuligt. Skønt sådanne sætninger logisk set ikke adskiller sig fra universelle sætninger, har de spillet en særlig rolle i matematikkens historie, idet de oftest fastslår uløseligheden af et bestemt problem (med bestemte midler). I et problemorienteret matematikparadigme optræder de derfor som en slags metasætninger. I artiklen argumenteres der for, at dette er en væsentlig årsag til, at tidligere tiders matematikere i mange tilfælde ikke anså det for vigtigt, nødvendigt eller muligt, at bevise umulighedssætninger. Der argumenteres også for at umulighedssætninger kan klassificeres efter hvad det er der ifølge sætningen ikke eksisterer, og at kompleksiteten heraf var afgørende for, hvornår sætningerne blev hentet ind i den egentlige matematik fra metamatikken.Til slut diskuteres, hvorvidt umulighedssætninger er særegne for matematikken, og især, hvorvidt matematikken er den eneste videnskab, som har været i stand til, at behandle sine egne grænser med fagets egne metoder.

Hertz' posthumt udgivne være Prinzipien der Mechanik er berømt for sin filosofiske indledning og for at undgå kraftbegrebet, som basalt begreb. I denne artikel lægger jeg hovedvægten på et tredje karakteristisk træk ved Hertz' mekanik, nemlig dens geometriske form. Hertz besluttede at han ville formulere sit mekaniske billede af den fysiske verden i en geometrisk form, det han kaldte en geometri af punktsystemer, eller det vi i dag vil kalde en differentialgeometri på konfigurationsrummet. Han understregede at hans valg af geometrisk form var uafhængigt at det fysiske indhold af bogen, men at de understøttede hinanden gensidigt. I artiklen forklares hvordan Hertz' geometri for punktsystemer fungerer, og det analyseres hvordan den virker sammen med det fysiske indhold af Hertz's mekanik. Hertz' geometrisering af mekanikken sammenlignes med de tidligere forsøg af matematikere bl.a. Lipschitz som var Hertz' kollega i Bonn. Endelig diskuteres det hvordan Hertz på den ene side kunne indføre sin højdimensionale ikke-euklidiske geometri på faserummet, og på den anden side fastholde at rummet a priori er euklidisk og tredimensionalt.
