The fourth virial coefficient of asymmetric nonadditive binary mixtures of hard disks is computed with a standard Monte Carlo method. Wide ranges of size ratio (0.05 ≤ q ≤ 0.95) and nonadditivity (-0.5 ≤ Δ ≤ 0.5) are covered. A comparison is made between the numerical results and those that follow from some theoretical developments. The possible use of these data in the derivation of new equations of state for these mixtures is illustrated by considering a rescaled virial expansion truncated to fourth order. The numerical results obtained using this equation of state are compared with Monte Carlo simulation data in the case of a size ratio q = 0.7 and two nonadditivities Δ = ±0.2.

Different theoretical approaches for the thermodynamic properties and the equation of state for multicomponent mixtures of nonadditive hard spheres in d dimensions are presented in a unified way. These include the theory by Hamad, our previous formulation, the original MIX1 theory, a recently proposed modified MIX1 theory, as well as a nonlinear extension of the MIX1 theory proposed in this paper. Explicit expressions for the compressibility factor, Helmholtz free energy, and second, third, and fourth virial coefficients are provided. A comparison is carried out with recent Monte Carlo data for the virial coefficients of asymmetric mixtures and with available simulation data for the compressibility factor, the critical consolute point, and the liquid-liquid coexistence curves. The merits and limitations of each theory are pointed out.

Using the first seven known virial coefficients and forcing it to possess two branch-point singularities, a new equation of state for the hard-sphere fluid is proposed. This equation of state predicts accurate values of the higher virial coefficients, a radius of convergence smaller than the close-packing value, and it is as accurate as the rescaled virial expansion and better than the Pade [3/3] equations of state. Consequences regarding the convergence properties of the virial series and the use of similar equations of state for hard-core fluids in d dimensions are also pointed out.

A simple equation of state for hard disks on the hyperbolic plane is proposed. It yields the exact second virial coefficient and contains a pole at the highest possible packing. A comparison with another very recent theoretical proposal and simulation data is presented.

A recently derived method [R. D. Rohrmann and A. Santos, Phys. Rev. E 76, 051202 (2007)] to obtain the exact solution of the Percus-Yevick equation for a fluid of hard spheres in (odd) d dimensions is used to investigate the convergence properties of the resulting virial series. This is done both for the virial and compressibility routes, in which the virial coefficients B(j) are expressed in terms of the solution of a set of (d-1)/2 coupled algebraic equations which become nonlinear for d>/=5. Results have been derived up to d=13. A confirmation of the alternating character of the series for d>/=5, due to the existence of a branch point on the negative real axis, is found and the radius of convergence is explicitly determined for each dimension. The resulting scaled density per dimension 2eta(1/d), where eta is the packing fraction, is wholly consistent with the limiting value of 1 for d-->infinity. Finally, the values for B(j) predicted by the virial and compressibility routes in the Percus-Yevick approximation are compared with the known exact values [N. Clisby and B. M. McCoy, J. Stat. Phys. 122, 15 (2006)].

The depletion force and depletion potential between two in principle unequal "big" hard spheres embedded in a multicomponent mixture of "small" hard spheres are computed using the rational function approximation method for the structural properties of hard-sphere mixtures [S. B. Yuste, A. Santos, and M. Lopez de Haro, J. Chem. Phys. 108, 3683 (1998)]. The cases of equal solute particles and of one big particle and a hard planar wall in a background monodisperse hard-sphere fluid are explicitly analyzed. An improvement over the performance of the Percus-Yevick theory and good agreement with available simulation results are found.

The rational function approximation method, density functional theory, and NVT Monte Carlo simulation are used to obtain the density profiles of multicomponent hard-sphere mixtures near a planar hard wall. Binary mixtures with a size ratio 1:3 in which both components occupy a similar volume are specifically examined. The results indicate that the present version of density functional theory yields an excellent overall performance. A reasonably accurate behavior of the rational function approximation method is also observed, except in the vicinity of the first minimum, where it may even predict unphysical negative values.

The direct correlation function and the (static) structure factor for a seven-dimensional hard-sphere fluid are considered. Analytical results for these quantities are derived within the Percus-Yevick [Phys. Rev.110, 1 (1958)] theory.

The contact values g(sigma,sigma') of the radial distribution functions of a fluid of (additive) hard spheres with a given size distribution f(sigma) are considered. A "universality" assumption is introduced, according to which, at a given packing fraction eta,g(sigma,sigma')=G(z(sigma,sigma')), where G is a common function independent of the number of components (either finite or infinite) and z(sigma,sigma')=[2sigmasigma'/(sigma+sigma')]mu2/mu3 is a dimensionless parameter, mu n being the nth moment of the diameter distribution. A cubic form proposal for the z dependence of G is made and known exact consistency conditions for the point particle and equal size limits, as well as between two different routes to compute the pressure of the system in the presence of a hard wall, are used to express Gz in terms of the radial distribution at contact of the one-component system. For polydisperse systems we compare the contact values of the wall-particle correlation function and the compressibility factor with those obtained from recent Monte Carlo simulations.

Following the work of Leutheusser [Physica A 127, 667 (1984)], the solution to the Percus-Yevick equation for a seven-dimensional hard-sphere fluid is explicitly found. This allows the derivation of the equation of state for the fluid taking both the virial and the compressibility routes. An analysis of the virial coefficients and the determination of the radius of convergence of the virial series are carried out. Molecular-dynamics simulations of the same system are also performed and a comparison between the simulation results for the compressibility factor and theoretical expressions for the same quantity is presented.

Monte Carlo simulations on the structural properties of ternary fluid mixtures of additive hard spheres are reported. The results are compared with those obtained from a recent analytical approximation [S. B. Yuste, A. Santos, and M. López de Haro, J. Chem. Phys. 108, 3683 (1998)] to the radial distribution functions of hard-sphere mixtures and with the results derived from the solution of the Ornstein-Zernike integral equation with both the Martynov-Sarkisov and the Percus-Yevick closures. Very good agreement between the results of the first two approaches and simulation is observed, with a noticeable improvement over the Percus-Yevick predictions especially near contact.

We have studied the in vitro interactions of a promoter fragment of the rabbit uteroglobin (UG) gene with endometrial nuclear factors from either control rabbits or progesterone-treated animals, a treatment that induces the transcription of the gene in the endometrium. Nuclear factors from liver, which does not express UG, were also compared. Using DNase I footprinting, several protected zones were observed on the promoter; some of these were common to all three nuclear extracts, whereas others seemed to be specific to progesterone treated endometrium. One of these footprints was over the TATA box region. A 28-bp synthetic oligonucleotide encompassing the sequence of that region was used as a probe in electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSA) and UV-crosslinking assays. In EMSA experiments, endometrial nuclear extracts, but not liver extracts, generated a major retarded complex that was strongly increased following progesterone stimulation. Competition experiments with unlabeled mutated versions of the probe showed that sequences 3' downstream from the TATA box (but not this motif) were responsible for the formation of the complex. UV-crosslinking experiments indicated that the probe interacted with two progesterone-dependent nuclear proteins of 55 and 60 kDa, different from the TATA box-binding protein. The results suggest that progesterone induction of the UG gene in the endometrium might be mediated by both general and tissue-specific nuclear factors.

Two isoforms of a retinoic acid-binding protein have been purified from rabbit epididymal secretions using a combination of gel filtration and ion-exchange chromatography. The two polypeptides (EP21a and b) present similar molecular mass (21 kDa), under native or denaturing conditions and have very similar amino-acid composition and tryptic peptide maps but differ in net charge. Both isoforms are glycosilated though to a different extent (9.2% and 6.3% of carbohydrate content) and are major components of the epididymal fluid. Binding of retinoic acid to EP21s appears to be specific, since they do not bind retinol, but is non-saturable. EP21s seem to present some similarity to two retinoic acid-binding proteins from rat epididymal secretions (site of biosynthesis, androgen dependence, ligand specificity and association to the spermatozoa) but differ from the rat proteins in amino-acid composition and glycosilation.

Uteroglobin, a progesterone-binding secretory protein, was shown to bind retinoic acid and retinol in a non-saturable manner, at least up to concentrations of retinoids of 20 microM. Binding is increased about 10-fold by previous reduction of uteroglobin with 10 mM dithiothreitol and it is not affected by previous saturation of the progesterone binding site, suggesting different binding sites for the steroid and the retinoids. The results are discussed in relation to a possible physiological role for this protein.

Transgenic mice bearing two fragments of the rabbit uteroglobin 5'-flanking region fused to the new reporter gene (pac) encoding puromycin N-acetyltransferase (PAC) showed a different pattern of expression. Transgenic lines (C0.4) harboring a 404-bp fragment (-396/+8) had a uterus-specific expression slightly inducible by estrogen, lacking detectable expression in other tissues where the uteroglobin-encoding gene is naturally expressed in rabbit. Transgenic lines (C3.2) bearing a longer fragment of 3.2-kb (-3254/+8) showed hormonally regulated expression in the uterus and the male genital tract, and detectable expression in the lung. In addition, the nonstimulated uterine expression of the transgene was higher in C0.4 lines than in C3.2 lines. It could be concluded that all sequences required for uterus-specific expression should be present within the 404-bp fragment, and that other upstream (-396) sequences are responsible for expression in the lung and male genital tract, as well as for a possible down modulation of expression in the uterus.

Rabbit uteroglobin was purified from both uterine fluids and lung lavages by a combination of gel filtration and ion-exchange column chromatography. Anti-trypsin and anti-papain activities were measured in the fractions of the eluates. Anti-proteinase activities were detected in minor contaminants eluting close to the uteroglobin peak but the protein itself was devoid of anti-proteinase activity. Ion-exchange-purified uteroglobin also lacked inhibitory activity of elastase, chymotrypsin or subtilisin. The presence of contaminants could explain the anti-proteinase activity reported occasionally for uteroglobin.

By means of a DNA-cellulose competitive binding assay, we have studied the interaction of the estrogen receptor with genomic fragments of the estrogen responsive rabbit uteroglobin gene. The fragments spanned from 3255 bp upstream to 1754 bp downstream of the initiation site. Only a fragment (-396/+8) showed strong affinity for the receptor. Within this fragment a unique palindromic sequence (GGTCAccaTGCCC) was found which is very similar to the canonical consensus sequence for the estrogen receptor. A synthetic oligonucleotide of that structure specifically competed for the binding of the receptor to DNA-cellulose.

The estrogenic activity of phenolphthalein and other related triphenylmethane dyes was evaluated in vivo in the immature rat uterus. Phenolphthalein behaved as a partial agonist of estradiol in stimulating the growth of rat uterus. Other specific estrogenic effects of the dye included an increase of the uterine DNA content, histological changes and induction of estrogen-modulated secretory proteins. The progressive introduction of side chains in the triphenylmethane skeleton concomitantly decreased the estrogenic activity. Triphenylmethanes competed with [3H]estradiol for the binding to the estrogen receptor in vitro, the relative binding affinity being correlated with the estrogenic potency observed in vivo. Phenolphthalein also showed antiestrogenic activity that could be overcome by increasing the dose of estradiol.

Poly(A)-containing RNA was obtained from the lung of hares (Lepus capensis) and uteroglobin mRNA was characterized by cell-free translation and molecular hybridization to a rabbit uteroglobin cDNA probe. In the cell-free system, hare uteroglobin mRNA was preferentially translated as compared to the whole lung mRNA and it directed the synthesis of a precursor, preuteroglobin, containing about twenty additional amino acids. Hare uteroglobin mRNA was about 40 nucleotides larger than the homologous rabbit one, as analyzed by electrophoresis on agarose gel. Thermal stability of the hybrids formed between rabbit or hare uteroglobin mRNAs and the rabbit cDNA probe indicated differences in the nucleotide sequence of both mRNAs. The levels of uteroglobin mRNA and uteroglobin synthesis in lung are about two-fold higher in hare than in rabbit lung.

Uteroglobin has been purified from hare lung by gel filtration and chromatography on carboxymethyl-cellulose. Hare uteroglobin appears homogeneous by electrophoresis under both denaturing and nondenaturing conditions. Its chemical and immunological properties as well as its ability to bind progesterone are compared to those of rabbit uteroglobin. The two proteins have the same N-terminal residue (glycine) and both lack tryptophan but differ in amino acid composition. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-gel electrophoresis shows that hare uteroglobin is composed of two subunits of identical Mr (about 7000) held together by disulfide bridges. The amino acid composition indicates a subunit composed of 65-67 residues, which is compatible with the apparent Mr observed. Thus, hare uteroglobin appears to be slightly smaller than the rabbit protein. Hare uteroglobin partially reacts with anti-rabbit uteroglobin in a radioimmunoassay and also binds progesterone, although this binding is relatively unaffected by dithiothreitol. The synthesis of hare uteroglobin in the uterus appears to be rather insensitive to ovarian steroid hormones.

Double-stranded cDNA was synthesized from partially purified uteroglobin mRNA from rabbit lung. A cDNA coding for lung uteroglobin was then cloned in the plasmid pUC18 and both the nucleotide sequence and the derived amino acid sequence were determined. This allowed us to demonstrate unequivocally that uteroglobins from lung and uterus are identical proteins.

Purified Clara cell secretory protein (CCSP) from rabbit lung was analyzed by SDS gel electrophoresis, and immunoblotting with a specific anti-uteroglobin antibody as well as for its ability to bind [3H]progesterone. The results obtained indicate that proteins CCSP and uteroglobin are identical.
