101. A SINFONI view of the nuclear activity and circumnuclear star formation in NGC 4303 - II: Spatially resolved stellar populations

Abstract

We present a spatially resolved stellar population study of the inner $\sim$200\,pc radius of NGC4303 based on near-infrared integral field spectroscopy with SINFONI/VLT at a spatial resolution of 40-80pc and using the STARLIGHT code. We found the distribution of the stellar populations presents a spatial variation, suggesting an age stratification. Three main structures stand out. Two nuclear blobs, one composed by young stars (t $\leq$ 50Myr) and one with intermediate-age stars (50Myr $<$ t $\leq$ 2Gyr) both shifted from the centre. The third one is an internal intermediate-age spiral arm-like structure, surrounding the blob of young stars. Our results indicate star formation has occurred through multiple bursts in this source. Furthermore, the youngest stellar populations (t $\lesssim$ 2Gyr) are distributed along a circumnuclear star-forming ring with r$\sim$250pc. The ring displays star formation rates (SFRs) in the range of 0.002-0.14M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$, favoring the `pearls-on-a-string' scenario. The old underlying bulge stellar population component (t $>$ 2Gyr) is distributed outside the two blob structures. For the nuclear region (inner $\sim$60pc radius) we derived a SFR of 0.43\,M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$ and found no signatures of non-thermal featureless continuum and hot dust emission, supporting the scenario in which a LLAGN/LINER-like source is hidden in the centre of NGC4303. Thus, our results reveal a rather complex star formation history in NGC4303, with different stellar population components coexisting with a low efficiency accreting black hole in its centre.

Abstract

HARMONI is a visible and near-infrared integral field spectrograph equipped with two complementary adaptive optics systems, fully integrated within the instrument. A Single Conjugate AO (SCAO) system offers high performance for a limited sky coverage and a Laser Tomographic AO (LTAO) system provides AO correction with a very high sky-coverage. While the deformable mirror performing real-time correction of the atmospheric disturbances is located within the telescope itself, the instrument contains a suite of state-of-the-art and innovative wavefront sensor systems. Laser guide star sensors (LGSS) are located at the entrance of the instrument and fed by a dichroic beam splitter, while the various natural guide star sensors for LTAO and SCAO are located close to the science focal plane. Abstract

Dielectric laser-driven accelerators (DLAs) can provide high accelerating gradients in the GV/m range due to their having higher breakdown thresholds than metals, which opens the way for the miniaturization of the next generation of particle accelerator facilities. Two kinds of scheme, the addition of a Bragg reflector and the use of pulse-front-tilted (PFT) laser illumination, have been studied separately to improve the energy efficiency for dual-grating DLAs. The Bragg reflector enhances the accelerating gradient of the structure, while the PFT increases the effective interaction length. In this paper, we investigate numerically the advantages of using the two schemes in conjunction. Our calculations show that, for a 100-period structure with a period of 2 micrometer, such a design effectively increases the energy gain by more than 100 % when compared to employing the Bragg reflector with a normal laser, and by about 50 % when using standard structures with a PFT laser. A total energy gain of as much as 2.6 MeV can be obtained for a PFT laser beam when illuminating a 2000-period dual-grating structure with a Bragg reflector., Comment: 7 pages, 4 Figures, Proceedings of EAAC2017 Conference

Abstract

Global gene-expression analysis has shown remarkable difference between males and females in response to exposure to many diseases. Nevertheless, gene expression studies in asthmatics have so far focused on sex-combined analysis, ignoring inherent variabilities between the sexes, which potentially drive disparities in asthma prevalence. The objectives of this study were to identify (1) sex-specific differentially expressed genes (DEGs), (2) genes that show sex-interaction effects and (3) sex-specific pathways and networks enriched in asthma risk. We analyzed 711 males and 689 females and more than 2.8 million transcripts covering 20 000 genes leveraged from five different tissues and cell types (i.e. epithelial, blood, induced sputum, T cells and lymphoblastoids). Using tissue-specific meta-analysis, we identified 439 male- and 297 female-specific DEGs in all cell types, with 32 genes in common. By linking DEGs to the genome-wide association study (GWAS) catalog and the lung and blood eQTL annotation data from GTEx, we identified four male-specific genes (FBXL7, ITPR3 and RAD51B from epithelial tissue and ALOX15 from blood) and one female-specific gene (HLA-DQA1 from epithelial tissue) that are disregulated during asthma. The hypoxia-inducible factor 1 signaling pathway was enriched only in males, and IL-17 and chemokine signaling pathways were enriched in females. The cytokine-cytokine signaling pathway was enriched in both sexes. The presence of sex-specific genes and pathways demonstrates that sex-combined analysis does not identify genes preferentially expressed in each sex in response to diseases. Linking DEG and molecular eQTLs to GWAS catalog represents an important avenue for identifying biologically and clinically relevant genes.

Abstract

ObjectiveCompare conspicuity of suspicious breast lesions on contrast-enhanced dedicated breast CT (CEbCT), tomosynthesis (DBT) and digital mammography (DM).Methods100 females with BI-RADS 4/5 lesions underwent CEbCT and/or DBT prior to biopsy in this IRB approved, HIPAA compliant study. Two breast radiologists adjudicated lesion conspicuity scores (CS) for each modality independently. Data are shown as mean CS ±standard deviation. Two-sided t-test was used to determine significance between two modalities within each subgroup. Multiple comparisons were controlled by the false-discovery rate set to 5%.Results50% of studied lesions were biopsy-confirmed malignancies. Malignant masses were more conspicuous on CEbCT than on DBT or DM (9.7 ±0.5, n = 25; 6.8 ± 3.1, n = 15; 6.7 ± 3.0, n = 27; p < 0.05). Malignant calcifications were equally conspicuous on all three modalities (CEbCT 8.7 ± 0.8, n = 18; DBT 8.5 ± 0.6, n = 15; DM 8.8 ± 0.7, n = 23; p = NS). Benign masses were equally conspicuous on CEbCT (6.6 ± 4.1, n = 22); DBT (6.4 ± 3.8, n = 17); DM (5.9 ± 3.6, n = 24; p = NS). Benign calcifications CS were similar between DBT (8.5 ± 1.0, n = 17) and DM (8.8 ± 0.8, n = 26; p = NS) but less conspicuous on CEbCT (4.0 ± 2.9, n = 25, p < 0.001). 55 females were imaged with all modalities. Results paralleled the entire cohort. 69%(n = 62) of females imaged by CEbCT had dense breasts. Benign/malignant lesion CSs in dense/non-dense categories were 4.8 ± 3.7, n = 33, vs 6.0 ± 3.9, n = 14, p = 0.35; 9.2 ± 0.9, n = 29 vs. 9.4 ± 0.7, n = 14; p = 0.29, respectively.ConclusionMalignant masses are more conspicuous on CEbCT than DM or DBT. Malignant microcalcifications are equally conspicuous on all three modalities. Benign calcifications remain better visualized by DM and DBT than with CEbCT. We observed no differences in benign masses on all modalities. CS of both benign and malignant lesions were independent of breast density.Advances in knowledgeCEbCT is a promising diagnostic imaging modality for suspicious breast lesions.

Abstract

The willing participation of patients in clinical research is a critical element in national efforts to collect health data for precision medicine and large cohort studies. However, recruiting patients is challenging. Clinical data research networks (CDRN) have primarily been used for observational studies, but may be able to enhance recruitment efforts. We need a better understanding of patient motivation and preferences for research participation and their interest in different types of research activities, particularly among those who are already represented in CDRNs. We surveyed a heart failure patient cohort constructed from EHRs in a CDRN to assess research participation. Results showed that CDRN recruitment is feasible. Respondents were most interested in completing a one-time survey and giving a blood sample one time. They were least interested in a study about weight control that require surgery. We found statistically significant associations between race and research activity interests.

Abstract

ObjectiveImplementation of the newly approved high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) in the United States presents a challenge for clinical practice. Sex-specific cutoffs, clinical protocols, and workflows will likely require modifications before implementation.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional survey of international physicians and laboratorians already utilizing hs-cTn for the evaluation of acute myocardial infarction.ResultsTwenty-two of 54 (41%) eligible participants completed the survey, representing 9 countries and 18 hospitals. All reported successful hs-cTn implementation and diagnostic utility (mean 8.6 + 1.2 out of 10 for best implementation). The major perceived benefit was more rapid evaluation of acute myocardial infarction (14/19, 74%), and the most frequently cited limitation was an increase in the number of measurable hs-cTn values that required further evaluation (8/18, 44%). Institutions using the hs-cTnI assay favored sex-specific cutoffs (5/6, 83%), whereas institutions employing the hs-cTnT assay favored a combined cutoff (12/12, 100%). Timing of serial hs-cTn measurements varied, with 0-3 hours (8/17, 47%) most frequent, followed by 0-2 hours (4/17, 24%), 0-1 hour (3/17, 18%), and other (2/17, 12%).ConclusionsOur survey of hs-cTn implementation at international institutions reveals satisfaction with new assays but reflects important variations in clinical practice. The use of sex-specific vs. combined cutoffs and timing of serial hs-cTn measurements varies across institutions and are subjects that United States centers must define without consensus from international practices.

149. An infrared view of AGN feedback in a type-2 quasar: the case of the Teacup galaxy

Abstract

We present near-infrared integral field spectroscopy data obtained with VLT/SINFONI of "the Teacup galaxy". The nuclear K-band (1.95-2.45 micron) spectrum of this radio-quiet type-2 quasar reveals a blueshifted broad component of FWHM~1600-1800 km/s in the hydrogen recombination lines (Pa$\alpha$, Br$\delta$, and Br$\gamma$) and also in the coronal line [Si VI]$\lambda$1.963 micron. Thus the data confirm the presence of the nuclear ionized outflow previously detected in the optical and reveal its coronal counterpart. Both the ionized and coronal nuclear outflows are resolved, with seeing-deconvolved full widths at half maximum of 1.1$\pm$0.1 and 0.9$\pm$0.1 kpc along PA$\sim$72-74 deg. This orientation is almost coincident with the radio axis (PA=77 deg), suggesting that the radio jet could have triggered the nuclear outflow. In the case of the H$_2$ lines we do not require a broad component to reproduce the profiles, but the narrow lines are blueshifted by ~50 km/s on average from the galaxy systemic velocity. This could be an indication of the presence of a nuclear molecular outflow, although the bulk of the H$_2$ emission in the inner ~2 arcsec (~3 kpc) of the galaxy follows a rotation pattern. We find evidence for kinematically disrupted gas (FWHM>250 km/s) at up to 5.6 kpc from the AGN, which can be naturally explained by the action of the outflow. The narrow component of [Si VI] is redshifted with respect to the systemic velocity, unlike any other emission line in the K-band spectrum. This indicates that the region where the coronal lines are produced is not co-spatial with the narrow line region., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

We study the spatially homogeneous time dependent solutions and their bifurcations of the Gray-Scott model. We find the global map of bifurcations by a combination of rigorous verification of the existence of Takens Bogdanov and a Bautin bifurcations, in the space of two parameters k and F. With the aid of numerical continuation of local bifurcation curves we give a global description of all the possible bifurcations, Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures
