101. Mixed-model Sequencing with Stochastic Failures: A Case Study for Automobile Industry

Abstract

In the automotive industry, the sequence of vehicles to be produced is determined ahead of the production day. However, there are some vehicles, failed vehicles, that cannot be produced due to some reasons such as material shortage or paint failure. These vehicles are pulled out of the sequence, and the vehicles in the succeeding positions are moved forward, potentially resulting in challenges for logistics or other scheduling concerns. This paper proposes a two-stage stochastic program for the mixed-model sequencing (MMS) problem with stochastic product failures, and provides improvements to the second-stage problem. To tackle the exponential number of scenarios, we employ the sample average approximation approach and two solution methodologies. On one hand, we develop an L-shaped decomposition-based algorithm, where the computational experiments show its superiority over solving the deterministic equivalent formulation with an off-the-shelf solver. Moreover, we provide a tabu search algorithm in addition to a greedy heuristic to tackle case study instances inspired by our car manufacturer partner. Numerical experiments show that the proposed solution methodologies generate high quality solutions by utilizing a sample of scenarios. Particularly, a robust sequence that is generated by considering car failures can decrease the expected work overload by more than 20\% for both small- and large-sized instances., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures

102. Analyzing the Internals of Neural Radiance Fields

Abstract

Modern Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) learn a mapping from position to volumetric density leveraging proposal network samplers. In contrast to the coarse-to-fine sampling approach with two NeRFs, this offers significant potential for acceleration using lower network capacity. Given that NeRFs utilize most of their network capacity to estimate radiance, they could store valuable density information in their parameters or their deep features. To investigate this proposition, we take one step back and analyze large, trained ReLU-MLPs used in coarse-to-fine sampling. Building on our novel activation visualization method, we find that trained NeRFs, Mip-NeRFs and proposal network samplers map samples with high density to local minima along a ray in activation feature space. We show how these large MLPs can be accelerated by transforming intermediate activations to a weight estimate, without any modifications to the training protocol or the network architecture. With our approach, we can reduce the computational requirements of trained NeRFs by up to 50% with only a slight hit in rendering quality. Extensive experimental evaluation on a variety of datasets and architectures demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach. 103. Preservice Teachers' Errors in the Creation and Extension of Sequences Using Color Tiles: An Exploratory Study

Abstract

Recognizing, building, describing, extending, and analyzing patterns are key components of algebraic reasoning. Oftentimes pattern-based instruction is used to support the understanding of functions and variables. In this study, elementary preservice teachers (n = 23) were asked to explore, extend, explain, create equations for, and analyze linear, geometric, and quadratic integer patterns using color tiles. Then they created, extended, described, and analyzed their own patterns while working in groups (n = 8). The research question was: What algebraic errors do PSTs demonstrate in the process of constructing, explaining, and analyzing their own linear, geometric, and quadratic patterns using color tiles? The analysis, which focused on errors and misunderstandings preservice teachers demonstrated in their final unit, revealed three specific areas of difficulties: figural errors, explanation challenges, and improper use of algebraic language. Participants failed to connect their algebraic images in a coherent manner, there was confusion in articulating their algebraic thought processes, and algebraic terminology was improperly used. Implications for teaching and further research are described.

Abstract

We report a search for lepton-flavor-violating decays $\tau^- \to \ell^- \phi$ ($\ell^- =e^-,\mu^-$) at the Belle II experiment, using a sample of electron-positron data produced at the SuperKEKB collider in 2019-2021 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 190 fb$^{-1}$. We use a new untagged selection for $e^+e^- \to \tau^+\tau^-$ events, where the signal $\tau$ is searched for as a neutrinoless final state of a single charged lepton and a $\phi$ meson and the other $\tau$ is not reconstructed in any specific decay mode, in contrast to previous measurements by the BaBar and Belle experiments. We find no evidence for $\tau^- \to \ell^- \phi$ decays and obtain upper limits on the branching fractions at 90% confidence level of 23 $\times 10^{-8}$ and 9.7$\times 10^{-8}$ for $\tau^- \rightarrow e^-\phi$ and $\tau^- \rightarrow \mu^-\phi$, respectively

Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching fractions of four $B^{0,-}\to D^{(*)+,0} K^- K^{0}_S$ decay modes. The measurement is based on data from SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance collected with the Belle II detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of ${362~\text{fb}^{-1}}$. The event yields are extracted from fits to the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ meson energy to separate signal and background, and are efficiency-corrected as a function of the invariant mass of the $K^-K_S^0$ system. We find the branching fractions to be: \[ \text{B}(B^-\to D^0K^-K_S^0)=(1.89\pm 0.16\pm 0.10)\times 10^{-4}, \] \[ \text{B}(\overline B{}^0\to D^+K^-K_S^0)=(0.85\pm 0.11\pm 0.05)\times 10^{-4},\] \[ \text{B}(B^-\to D^{*0}K^-K_S^0)=(1.57\pm 0.27\pm 0.12)\times 10^{-4}, \] \[ \text{B}(\overline B{}^0\to D^{*+}K^-K_S^0)=(0.96\pm 0.18\pm 0.06)\times 10^{-4},\] where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These results include the first observation of $\overline B{}^0\to D^+K^-K_S^0$, $B^-\to D^{*0}K^-K_S^0$, and $\overline B{}^0\to D^{*+}K^-K_S^0$ decays and a significant improvement in the precision of $\text{B}(B^-\to D^0K^-K_S^0)$ compared to previous measurements.

Abstract

We determine the minimum possible column multiplicity of even, doubly-, and triply-even codes given their length. This refines a classification result for the possible lengths of $q^r$-divisible codes over $\mathbb{F}_q$. We also give a few computational results for field sizes $q>2$. Abstract

In order to better facilitate the need for continuous business process improvement, the application of DevOps principles has been proposed. In particular, the AB-BPM methodology applies AB testing and reinforcement learning to increase the speed and quality of improvement efforts. In this paper, we provide an industry perspective on this approach, assessing requirements, risks, opportunities, and more aspects of the AB-BPM methodology and supporting tools. Our qualitative analysis combines grounded theory with a Delphi study, including semi-structured interviews and multiple follow-up surveys with a panel of ten business process management experts. The main findings indicate a need for human control during reinforcement learning-driven experiments, the importance of aligning the methodology culturally and organizationally with the respective setting, and the necessity of an integrated process execution platform.

Abstract

Precise and fast prediction methods for ischemic areas comprised of dead tissue, core, and salvageable tissue, penumbra, in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients are of significant clinical interest. They play an essential role in improving diagnosis and treatment planning. Computed Tomography (CT) scan is one of the primary modalities for early assessment in patients with suspected AIS. CT Perfusion (CTP) is often used as a primary assessment to determine stroke location, severity, and volume of ischemic lesions. Current automatic segmentation methods for CTP mostly use already processed 3D parametric maps conventionally used for clinical interpretation by radiologists as input. Alternatively, the raw CTP data is used on a slice-by-slice basis as 2D+time input, where the spatial information over the volume is ignored. In addition, these methods are only interested in segmenting core regions, while predicting penumbra can be essential for treatment planning. This paper investigates different methods to utilize the entire 4D CTP as input to fully exploit the spatio-temporal information, leading us to propose a novel 4D convolution layer. Our comprehensive experiments on a local dataset of 152 patients divided into three groups show that our proposed models generate more precise results than other methods explored. Adopting the proposed 4D mJ-Net, a Dice Coefficient of 0.53 and 0.23 is achieved for segmenting penumbra and core areas, respectively. Abstract

Precise ischemic lesion segmentation plays an essential role in improving diagnosis and treatment planning for ischemic stroke, one of the prevalent diseases with the highest mortality rate. While numerous deep neural network approaches have recently been proposed to tackle this problem, these methods require large amounts of annotated regions during training, which can be impractical in the medical domain where annotated data is scarce. As a remedy, we present a prototypical few-shot segmentation approach for ischemic lesion segmentation using only one annotated sample during training. The proposed approach leverages a novel self-supervised training mechanism that is tailored to the task of ischemic stroke lesion segmentation by exploiting color-coded parametric maps generated from Computed Tomography Perfusion scans. We illustrate the benefits of our proposed training mechanism, leading to considerable improvements in performance in the few-shot setting. Given a single annotated patient, an average Dice score of 0.58 is achieved for the segmentation of ischemic lesions.

113. A Validated Finite Element Model for Room Acoustic Treatments with Edge Absorbers

Abstract

Porous acoustic absorbers have excellent properties in the low-frequency range when positioned in room edges, therefore they are a common method for reducing low-frequency reverberation. However, standard room acoustic simulation methods such as ray tracing and mirror sources are invalid for low frequencies in general which is a consequence of using geometrical methods, yielding a lack of simulation tools for these so-called edge absorbers. In this article, a validated finite element simulation model is presented, which is able to predict the effect of an edge absorber on the acoustic field. With this model, the interaction mechanisms between room and absorber can be studied by high-resolved acoustic field visualizations in both room and absorber. The finite element model is validated against transfer function data computed from impulse response measurements in a reverberation chamber in style of ISO 354. The absorber made of Basotect is modeled using the Johnson-Champoux-Allard-Lafarge model, which is fitted to impedance tube measurements using the four-microphone transfer matrix method. It is shown that the finite element simulation model is able to predict the influence of different edge absorber configurations on the measured transfer functions to a high degree of accuracy. Abstract

We study varieties generated by semi-primal lattice-expansions by means of category theory. We provide a new proof of the Keimel-Werner topological duality for such varieties and, using similar methods, establish its discrete version. We describe multiple adjunctions between the variety of Boolean algebras and the variety generated by a semi-primal lattice-expansion, both on the topological side and explicitly algebraic. In particular, we show that the Boolean skeleton functor has two adjoints, both defined by taking certain Boolean powers, and we identify properties of these adjunctions which fully characterize semi-primality of an algebra. Lastly, we give a new characterization of canonical extensions of algebras in semi-primal varieties in terms of their Boolean skeletons.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} \nu_{\ell}$ ($\ell=e,\mu$) branching ratio and of the CKM parameter $|V_{cb}|$ using signal decays accompanied by a fully reconstructed $B$ meson. The Belle II data set of electron-positron collisions at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance, corresponding to 189.3$\,$fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, is analyzed. With the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert form factor parameterization, the parameters $\eta_{\rm EW} F(1) |V_{cb}|$ and $\rho^{2}$ are extracted, where $\eta_{\rm EW}$ is an electroweak correction, $F(1)$ is a normalization factor and $\rho^{2}$ is a form factor shape parameter. We reconstruct 516 signal decays and thereby obtain $\mathcal{B} (B^{0} \rightarrow D^{*-} \ell^{+} \nu_{\ell} ) = \left(5.27 \pm 0.22~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.38~\rm{\left(syst\right)}\right) \%$, $\eta_{EW} F(1) |V_{cb}| \times 10^{3} = 34.6 \pm 1.8~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 1.7~\rm{\left(syst\right)}$, and $\rho^{2} = 0.94 \pm 0.18~\rm{\left(stat\right)} \pm 0.11~\rm{\left(syst\right)}$.

Abstract

In the past years, deep learning has seen an increase in usage in the domain of histopathological applications. However, while these approaches have shown great potential, in high-risk environments deep learning models need to be able to judge their uncertainty and be able to reject inputs when there is a significant chance of misclassification. In this work, we conduct a rigorous evaluation of the most commonly used uncertainty and robustness methods for the classification of Whole Slide Images, with a focus on the task of selective classification, where the model should reject the classification in situations in which it is uncertain. We conduct our experiments on tile-level under the aspects of domain shift and label noise, as well as on slide-level. In our experiments, we compare Deep Ensembles, Monte-Carlo Dropout, Stochastic Variational Inference, Test-Time Data Augmentation as well as ensembles of the latter approaches. We observe that ensembles of methods generally lead to better uncertainty estimates as well as an increased robustness towards domain shifts and label noise, while contrary to results from classical computer vision benchmarks no systematic gain of the other methods can be shown. Across methods, a rejection of the most uncertain samples reliably leads to a significant increase in classification accuracy on both in-distribution as well as out-of-distribution data. Furthermore, we conduct experiments comparing these methods under varying conditions of label noise. Abstract

Seizures are a frequent complication of adult-type diffuse gliomas, and are often difficult to control with medications. Gliomas with mutations in isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 or 2 (IDHmut) are more likely than IDH-wild type (IDHwt) gliomas to cause seizures as part of their initial clinical presentation. However, whether IDHmut is also associated with seizures during the remaining disease course, and whether IDHmut inhibitors can reduce seizure risk, are unclear. Clinical multivariable analyses showed that preoperative seizures, glioma location, extent of resection, and glioma molecular subtype (including IDHmut status) all contributed to postoperative seizure risk in adult-type diffuse glioma patients, and that postoperative seizures were often associated with tumor recurrence. Experimentally, the metabolic product of IDHmut, d-2-hydroxyglutarate, rapidly synchronized neuronal spike firing in a seizure-like manner, but only when non-neoplastic glial cells were present. In vitro and in vivo models recapitulated IDHmut glioma-associated seizures, and IDHmut inhibitors currently being evaluated in glioma clinical trials inhibited seizures in those models, independent of their effects on glioma growth. These data show that postoperative seizure risk in adult-type diffuse gliomas varies in large part by molecular subtype, and that IDHmut inhibitors could play a key role in mitigating such risk in IDHmut glioma patients.

Abstract

A \emph{subcube partition} is a partition of the Boolean cube $\{0,1\}^n$ into subcubes. A subcube partition is irreducible if the only sub-partitions whose union is a subcube are singletons and the entire partition. A subcube partition is tight if it "mentions" all coordinates. We study extremal properties of tight irreducible subcube partitions: minimal size, minimal weight, maximal number of points, maximal size, and maximal minimum dimension. We also consider the existence of homogeneous tight irreducible subcube partitions, in which all subcubes have the same dimensions. We additionally study subcube partitions of $\{0,\dots,q-1\}^n$, and partitions of $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ into affine subspaces, in both cases focusing on the minimal size. Abstract

We present results on the semileptonic decays $B^0 \to \rho^- \ell^+ \nu_\ell$ and $B^+ \to \rho^0 \ell^+ \nu_\ell$ in a sample corresponding to 189.9/fb of Belle II data at the SuperKEKB $e^- e^+$ collider. Signal decays are identified using full reconstruction of the recoil $B$ meson in hadronic final states. We determine the total branching fractions via fits to the distributions of the square of the "missing" mass in the event and the dipion mass in the signal candidate and find ${\mathcal{B}(B^0\to\rho^-\ell^+ \nu_\ell) = (4.12 \pm 0.64(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 1.16(\mathrm{syst})) \times 10^{-4}}$ and ${\mathcal{B}({B^+\to\rho^0\ell^+\nu_\ell}) = (1.77 \pm 0.23 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.36 (\mathrm{syst})) \times 10^{-4}}$ where the dominant systematic uncertainty comes from modeling the nonresonant $B\to (\pi\pi)\ell^+\nu_\ell$ contribution.

Abstract

Lidar-based SLAM systems perform well in a wide range of circumstances by relying on the geometry of the environment. However, even mature and reliable approaches struggle when the environment contains structureless areas such as long hallways. To allow the use of lidar-based SLAM in such environments, we propose to add reflector markers in specific locations that would otherwise be difficult. We present an algorithm to reliably detect these markers and two approaches to fuse the detected markers with geometry-based scan matching. 132. Detecting Invalid Map Merges in Lifelong SLAM

Abstract

For Lifelong SLAM, one has to deal with temporary localization failures, e.g., induced by kidnapping. We achieve this by starting a new map and merging it with the previous map as soon as relocalization succeeds. Since relocalization methods are fallible, it can happen that such a merge is invalid, e.g., due to perceptual aliasing. To address this issue, we propose methods to detect and undo invalid merges. These methods compare incoming scans with scans that were previously merged into the current map and consider how well they agree with each other. Evaluation of our methods takes place using a dataset that consists of multiple flat and office environments, as well as the public MIT Stata Center dataset. We show that methods based on a change detection algorithm and on comparison of gridmaps perform well in both environments and can be run in real-time with a reasonable computational cost., Comment: Accepted at IROS 2022

Abstract

We present a determination of the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element $V_{cb}$ using $B\to D\ell\nu$ decays. The result is based on $e^+e^-\to\Upsilon(4S)$ data recorded by the Belle II detector corresponding to 189.2/fb of integrated luminosity. The semileptonic decays $B^0\to D^-(\to K^+\pi^-\pi^-)\ell^+\nu_\ell$ and $B^+\to\bar D^0(\to K^+\pi^-)\ell^+\nu_\ell$ are reconstructed, where $\ell$ is either electron or a muon. The second $B$ meson in the $\Upsilon(4S)$ event is not explicitly reconstructed. Using the diamond-frame method, we determine the $B$ meson four-momentum and thus the hadronic recoil. We extract the partial decay rates as functions of $w$ and perform a fit to the decay form-factor and the CKM parameter $|V_{cb}|$ using the BGL parameterization of the form factor and lattice QCD input from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations. We obtain $\eta_{EW}|V_{cb}|=(38.53\pm 1.15)\times 10^{-3}$, where $\eta_{EW}$ is an electroweak correction, and the error accounts for theoretical and experimental sources of uncertainty., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Vine copulas are a flexible tool for high-dimensional dependence modeling. In this article, we discuss the generation of approximate model-X knockoffs with vine copulas. It is shown how Gaussian knockoffs can be generalized to Gaussian copula knockoffs. A convenient way to parametrize Gaussian copulas are partial correlation vines. We discuss how completion problems for partial correlation vines are related to Gaussian knockoffs. A natural generalization of partial correlation vines are vine copulas which are well suited for the generation of approximate model-X knockoffs. We discuss a specific D-vine structure which is advantageous to obtain vine copula knockoff models. In a simulation study, we demonstrate that vine copula knockoff models are effective and powerful for high-dimensional controlled variable selection.

Abstract

We measure the photon-energy spectrum in radiative bottom-meson ($B$) decays into inclusive final states involving a strange hadron and a photon. We use SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions corresponding to $189~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance by the Belle II experiment. The partner $B$ candidates are fully reconstructed using a large number of hadronic channels. The $B \rightarrow X_s \gamma$ partial branching fractions are measured as a function of photon energy in the signal $B$ meson rest frame in eight bins above $1.8~\mathrm{GeV}$. The background-subtracted signal yield for this photon energy region is $343 \pm 122$ events. Integrated branching fractions for three photon energy thresholds of $1.8~\mathrm{GeV}$, $2.0~\mathrm{GeV}$, and $2.1~\mathrm{GeV}$ are also reported, and found to be in agreement with world averages., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We present an analysis of the charmless semileptonic decay $B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}$, where $\ell = e, \mu$, from 198.0 million pairs of $B\bar{B}$ mesons recorded by the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. The decay is reconstructed without identifying the partner $B$ meson. The partial branching fractions are measured independently for $B^0\to\pi^- e^+ \nu_{e}$ and $B^0\to\pi^- \mu^+ \nu_{\mu}$ as functions of $q^{2}$ (momentum transfer squared), using 3896 $B^0\to\pi^- e^+ \nu_{e}$ and 5466 $B^0\to\pi^- \mu^+ \nu_{\mu}$ decays. The total branching fraction is found to be $(1.426 \pm 0.056 \pm 0.125) \times 10^{-4}$ for $B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}$ decays, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. By fitting the measured partial branching fractions as functions of $q^{2}$, together with constraints on the nonperturbative hadronic contribution from lattice QCD calculations, the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{ub}$, $(3.55 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.17) \times 10^{-3}$, is extracted. Here, the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is theoretical.

Abstract

Operations research (OR) approaches have been increasingly applied to model the resilience of a system to surprise events. In order to model a surprise event, one must have an understanding of its characteristics, which then become parameters, decisions, and/or constraints in the resulting model. This means that these models cannot (directly) handle fundamental surprise events, which are events that could not be defined before they happen. However, OR models may be adapted, improvised, or created during a fundamental surprise event, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, to help respond to it. We provide a framework for how OR models were applied by a university in response to the pandemic, thus helping to understand the role of OR models during fundamental surprise events. Our framework includes the following adaptations: adapting data, adding constraints, model switching, pulling from the modeling toolkit, and creating a new model. Each of these adaptations is formally presented, with supporting evidence gathered through interviews with modelers and users involved in the university response to the pandemic. We discuss the implications of this framework for both OR and resilience.

Abstract

We report a measurement of decay-time dependent $CP$-violating parameters in $B^0 \rightarrow K^0_S K^0_S K^0_S$ decays. We use $(198.0 \pm 3.0) \times 10^6\ B\overline{B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. Abstract

We determine the branching fractions ${\mathcal{B}}$ and $CP$ asymmetries ${\mathcal{A}_{{\it CP}}}$ of the decays $B^+ \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^0$ and $B^+ \rightarrow K^+ \pi^0$. The results are based on a data set containing 198 million bottom-antibottom meson pairs corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $190\;\text{fb}^{-1}$ recorded by the Belle II detector in energy-asymmetric electron-positron collisions at the $\Upsilon (4S)$ resonance. We measure ${\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^0) = (6.12 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.53)\times 10^{-6}}$, ${\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow K^+ \pi^0) = (14.30 \pm 0.69 \pm 0.79)\times 10^{-6}}$, ${\mathcal{A}_{{\it CP}}(B^+ \rightarrow \pi^+ \pi^0) = -0.085 \pm 0.085 \pm 0.019}$, and ${\mathcal{A}_{{\it CP}}(B^+ \rightarrow K^+ \pi^0) = 0.014 \pm 0.047 \pm 0.010}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results improve a previous Belle II measurement and agree with the world averages.

Abstract

Abstract The Observing Air–Sea Interactions Strategy (OASIS) is a new United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development programme working to develop a practical, integrated approach for observing air–sea interactions globally for improved Earth system (including ecosystem) forecasts, CO2 uptake assessments called for by the Paris Agreement, and invaluable surface ocean information for decision makers. Our “Theory of Change” relies upon leveraged multi-disciplinary activities, partnerships, and capacity strengthening. Recommendations from >40 OceanObs’19 community papers and a series of workshops have been consolidated into three interlinked Grand Ideas for creating #1: a globally distributed network of mobile air–sea observing platforms built around an expanded array of long-term time-series stations; #2: a satellite network, with high spatial and temporal resolution, optimized for measuring air–sea fluxes; and #3: improved representation of air–sea coupling in a hierarchy of Earth system models. OASIS activities are organized across five Theme Teams: (1) Observing Network Design & Model Improvement; (2) Partnership & Capacity Strengthening; (3) UN Decade OASIS Actions; (4) Best Practices & Interoperability Experiments; and (5) Findable–Accessible–Interoperable–Reusable (FAIR) models, data, and OASIS products. Stakeholders, including researchers, are actively recruited to participate in Theme Teams to help promote a predicted, safe, clean, healthy, resilient, and productive ocean.

Abstract

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To derive and initially validate a brief bedside clinical decision support tool that identifies emergency department (ED) patients at high risk of substantial, persistent posttraumatic stress symptoms after a motor vehicle collision. METHODS: Derivation (n=1,282, 19 ED sites) and validation (n=282, 11 separate ED sites) data were obtained from adults prospectively enrolled in the Advancing Understanding of RecOvery afteR traumA study who were discharged from the ED after motor vehicle collision-related trauma. The primary outcome was substantial posttraumatic stress symptoms at 3 months (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5 ≥38). Logistic regression derivation models were evaluated for discriminative ability using the area under the curve and the accuracy of predicted risk probabilities (Brier score). Candidate posttraumatic stress predictors assessed in these models (n=265) spanned a range of sociodemographic, baseline health, peritraumatic, and mechanistic domains. The final model selection was based on performance and ease of administration. RESULTS: Significant 3-month posttraumatic stress symptoms were common in the derivation (27%) and validation (26%) cohort. The area under the curve and Brier score of the final 8-question tool were 0.82 and 0.14 in the derivation cohort and 0.76 and 0.17 in the validation cohort. CONCLUSION: This simple 8-question tool demonstrates promise to risk-stratify individuals with substantial posttraumatic stress symptoms who are discharged to home after a motor vehicle collision. Both external validation of this instrument, and work to further develop more accurate tools, are needed. Such tools might benefit public health by enabling the conduct of preventive intervention trials and assisting the growing number of EDs that provide services to trauma survivors aimed at promoting psychological recovery.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and longitudinal polarization of $B^0 \to \rho^+ \rho^-$ decays. SuperKEKB electron-positron collision data corresponding to 189~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity and containing $198 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the Belle II detector are used. We obtain \begin{eqnarray*} \mathcal{B}(B^0\to\rho^+\rho^-) &=& [2.67\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm0.28\,(\mathrm{syst})] \times 10^{-5}, \end{eqnarray*} \begin{eqnarray*} f_L &=& 0.956\pm0.035\,(\mathrm{stat})\,\pm 0.033\,(\mathrm{syst}), \end{eqnarray*} These results are consistent with previous measurements and can be used to constrain penguin pollution and to extract the quark-mixing angle $\phi_2$.

Abstract

We report a study of $B \to J/\psi(\ell^{+}\ell^{-})K$ decays, where $\ell$ represents an electron or a muon, using $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. The data were collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider during 2019-2021, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $189$ fb$^{-1}$. The measured quantities are the branching fractions (${\mathcal B}$) of the decay channels $B^{+} \to J/\psi(e^{+}e^{-})K^{+}$, $B^{+} \to J/\psi(\mu^{+}\mu^{-}) K^{+}$, $B^{0} \to J/\psi(e^{+}e^{-}) K^{0}_{S}$, and $B^{0} \to J/\psi(\mu^{+}\mu^{-})K^{0}_{S}$; the lepton-flavor-dependent isospin asymmetries for the electron [$A_{I}\left(B \to J/\psi(e^{+}e^{-}) K\right)$] and muon [$A_{I}\left(B \to J/\psi(\mu^{+} \mu^{-}) K\right)$] channels; and the ratios of branching fractions between the muon and electron channels for the charged [$R_{K^{+}}\left(J/\psi\right)$] and neutral kaon [$R_{K^{0}}\left(J/\psi\right)$] case. The measurements are consistent with the world-average values.

Abstract

Novel view synthesis has recently been revolutionized by learning neural radiance fields directly from sparse observations. However, rendering images with this new paradigm is slow due to the fact that an accurate quadrature of the volume rendering equation requires a large number of samples for each ray. Previous work has mainly focused on speeding up the network evaluations that are associated with each sample point, e.g., via caching of radiance values into explicit spatial data structures, but this comes at the expense of model compactness. In this paper, we propose a novel dual-network architecture that takes an orthogonal direction by learning how to best reduce the number of required sample points. To this end, we split our network into a sampling and shading network that are jointly trained. Our training scheme employs fixed sample positions along each ray, and incrementally introduces sparsity throughout training to achieve high quality even at low sample counts. After fine-tuning with the target number of samples, the resulting compact neural representation can be rendered in real-time. Our experiments demonstrate that our approach outperforms concurrent compact neural representations in terms of quality and frame rate and performs on par with highly efficient hybrid representations. Abstract

We report on a Belle II measurement of the branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$), longitudinal polarization fraction ($f_L$), and CP asymmetry ($\mathcal{A}_{CP}$) of $B^+\to \rho^+\rho^0$ decays. We reconstruct $B^+\to \rho^+(\to \pi^+\pi^0(\to \gamma\gamma))\rho^0(\to \pi^+\pi^-)$ decays in a sample of SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019, 2020, and 2021 at the $\Upsilon$(4S) resonance and corresponding to 190 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We fit the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ candidate energy, continuum-suppression discriminant, dipion masses, and decay angles of the selected samples, to determine a signal yield of $345 \pm 31$ events. The signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to \rho^+\rho^0) = [23.2^{+\ 2.2}_{-\ 2.1} (\rm stat) \pm 2.7 (\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $f_L = 0.943 ^{+\ 0.035}_{-\ 0.033} (\rm stat)\pm 0.027(\rm syst)$, and $\mathcal{A}_{CP}=-0.069 \pm 0.068(\rm stat) \pm 0.060 (\rm syst)$. The results agree with previous measurements. This is the first measurement of $\mathcal{A}_{CP}$ in $B^+\to \rho^+\rho^0$ decays reported by Belle II.

Abstract

Over the last years, supervised learning (SL) has established itself as the state-of-the-art for data-driven turbulence modeling. In the SL paradigm, models are trained based on a dataset, which is typically computed a priori from a high-fidelity solution by applying the respective filter function, which separates the resolved and the unresolved flow scales. For implicitly filtered large eddy simulation (LES), this approach is infeasible, since here, the employed discretization itself acts as an implicit filter function. As a consequence, the exact filter form is generally not known and thus, the corresponding closure terms cannot be computed even if the full solution is available. The reinforcement learning (RL) paradigm can be used to avoid this inconsistency by training not on a previously obtained training dataset, but instead by interacting directly with the dynamical LES environment itself. This allows to incorporate the potentially complex implicit LES filter into the training process by design. In this work, we apply a reinforcement learning framework to find an optimal eddy-viscosity for implicitly filtered large eddy simulations of forced homogeneous isotropic turbulence. For this, we formulate the task of turbulence modeling as an RL task with a policy network based on convolutional neural networks that adapts the eddy-viscosity in LES dynamically in space and time based on the local flow state only. We demonstrate that the trained models can provide long-term stable simulations and that they outperform established analytical models in terms of accuracy. In addition, the models generalize well to other resolutions and discretizations. Abstract

We report the measurement of the branching fraction of the $B^0 \to K_S^0 \pi^0 \gamma$ decay in $e^+ e^- \to \Upsilon(4S) \to B \overline{B}$ data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy collider and corresponding to 190 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The signal yield is measured to be $121\pm 29\,\hbox{(stat.)}$, leading to the branching fraction ${\cal B}\left(B^0 \to K_S^0 \pi^0 \gamma\right) = \left(7.3 \pm 1.8\,\hbox{(stat.)} \pm 1.0\,\hbox{(syst.)} \right)\times 10^{-6}$, which agrees with the known value., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We present a reconstruction of the semileptonic decays $B^0 \to \pi^- e^+ \nu_e$ and $B^+ \to \pi^0 e^+ \nu_e$ in a sample corresponding to 189.3 fb$^{-1}$ of Belle II data, using events where the partner $B$-meson is reconstructed from a large variety of hadronic channels via a tagging algorithm known as the full-event-interpretation. We determine the partial branching fractions in three bins of the squared momentum transfer to the leptonic system using fits to the distribution of the square of the missing mass. The partial branching fractions are summed to determine $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to \pi^- e^+ \nu_e)$ = (1.43 $\pm$ 0.27(stat) $\pm$ 0.07(syst)) $\times 10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to \pi^0 e^+ \nu_e)$ = (8.33 $\pm$ 1.67(stat) $\pm$ 0.55(syst)) $\times 10^{-5}$. We extract a first Belle II measurement of the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{\mathrm{ub}}|$, with $|V_{\mathrm{ub}}|$ = (3.88 $\pm$ 0.45) $\times 10^{-3}$., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2111.00710, arXiv:2008.08819

Abstract

We report measurements of the branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$) and direct $CP$-violating asymmetry ($A_{CP}$) of the charmless decay $B^{0} \to K^0 \pi^0$ at Belle II. A sample of $e^{+} e^{-}$ collisions, corresponding to $189.8 fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, recorded at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance is used for the first decay-time-dependent analysis of these decays within the experiment. We reconstruct about 135 signal candidates, and measure $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to K^{0} \pi^{0})= [11.0 \pm 1.2 (stat) \pm 1.0 (syst)] \times 10^{-6}$ and $A_{CP} (B^{0} \to K^{0} \pi^{0})= -0.41_{-0.32}^{+0.30} (stat) \pm 0.09 (syst)$.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of $B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-$ decays, where $\ell^+\ell^- = \mu^+\mu^-$ or $e^+e^-$, using electron-positron collisions recorded at an energy at or near the $\Upsilon(4S)$ mass and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $189$ fb$^{-1}$. The data was collected during 2019--2021 by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ asymmetric-energy collider. We reconstruct $K^{\ast}(892)$ candidates in the $K^+\pi^-$, $K_{S}^{0}\pi^+$, and $K^+\pi^0$ final states. The signal yields with statistical uncertainties are $22\pm 6$, $18 \pm 6$, and $38 \pm 9$ for the decays $B \to K^{\ast}(892)\mu^+\mu^-$, $B \to K^{\ast}(892)e^+e^-$, and $B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-$, respectively. We measure the branching fractions of these decays for the entire range of the dilepton mass, excluding the very low mass region to suppress the $B \to K^{\ast}(892)\gamma(\to e^+e^-)$ background and regions compatible with decays of charmonium resonances, to be \begin{equation} {\cal B}(B \to K^{\ast}(892)\mu^+\mu^-) = (1.19 \pm 0.31 ^{+0.08}_{-0.07}) \times 10^{-6}, {\cal B}(B \to K^{\ast}(892)e^+e^-) = (1.42 \pm 0.48 \pm 0.09)\times 10^{-6}, {\cal B}(B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-) = (1.25 \pm 0.30 ^{+0.08}_{-0.07}) \times 10^{-6}, \end{equation} where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. These results, limited by sample size, are the first measurements of $B \to K^{\ast}(892)\ell^+\ell^-$ branching fractions from the Belle II experiment.
