Search

A search was made for 183 GHz line emission from water vapor in the direction of twelve Mira and two semiregular variables. Upper limits to the emission are in the range of 2000 to 5000 Jy. It is estimated that thermal emission from the inner regions of late type stellar envelopes will be on the order of ten Jy. Maser emission, according to one model, would be an order of magnitude stronger. From the limited set sampled, the possibility of very strong maser emission at 183 GHz cannot yet be ruled out.

Tunable mode selection by injection in pulsed CO2 lasers is examined, and both analytical and numerical models are used to compute the required injection power for a variety of experimental cases. These are treated in two categories: mode selection at a desired frequency displacement from the center frequency of a transition line in a dispersive cavity and mode (and line) selection at the center frequency of a selected transition line in a nondispersive cavity. The results point out the potential flexibility of pulsed injection in providing wavelength tunable high-energy single-frequency pulses.

Observations of the 3(13)-2(20) transition of water vapor in the direction of Ori MC1 in 1980 February show a 50 percent flux increase and an apparent additional red shift of approximately 2 km/s relative to the line observed in 1977 December. From a detailed examination of the amplitude and frequency calibration, it appears unlikely that the effect is due to systematic error. The increase is attributed to the appearance of a new component at a velocity of 12 km/s with respect to the local standard of rest. The new component also has broad wings. Increased emission from a region in the high-velocity core of Ori MC1 can be due either to additional far-IR radiation to pump the 1983 GHz transition or to a change in the physical conditions in the gas. Statistical equilibrium calculations using the large-velocity-gradient formalism were carried out to develop a model for the emission. The calculations support a model in which the gas in the region of enhanced emission is hotter than the dust. The temporal coincidence between the 183 GHz increase and the 22 GH1 water maser outburst suggests a common, impulsive cause, which has heated the gas in a part of the HV source, enhancing the emission in both transitions.

Methyl acetylene (propyne) appears to be a convenient and reliable probe of kinetic temperature for dense (few x 10 to the 4th/ cu cm) molecular clouds. A method is presented for fitting a (J + 1) - J K-multiplet to obtain the kinetic temperature from a single observation, facilitating the direct construction of kinetic temperature maps. Observations of Tau MC1, Ori MC1, Sgr B2, DR 21, DR 21 (OH), and S140 are presented to demonstrate the validity of the technique. Determination of methyl acetylene column densities requires, in addition, knowledge of the rotational excitation temperature. The relative abundance of CH3CCH appears to be within a factor of 2 of 2.5 x 10 to the -9th. Because of the large uncertainties in estimates of total gas column density, it is not clear whether there is genuine source-to-source variation in the CH3CCH relative abundance.

Preliminary calculations employing statistical equilibrium techniques were carried out to determine brightness temperatures of water transitions occurring in the submillimeter band. The interesting candidates appear to be the 325 GHz, 380 GHz, and 448 GHz transitions, they are compared with the 183 GHz and 380 GHz transitions observed in the Orion Kleinmann-Low nebula and the combined results seem to be consistent with H2 densities of 100,000 -1 million cm-3 and a water column density of approximately 10 to 18th power. This implies a relative abundance of approximately 0.00001 which means that water may be about one twentieth of CO. In addition, it was found that for the conditions of the Orion plateau source, the 448 GHz line is expected to be a mild maser.

A description is presented of the results of computer calculations on the molecule NH, which is an important constituent of cometary comae, and a probable, but an as yet undetected, interstellar species. Attention is given to spectroscopic properties, the treatment of solar spectral data, and radiative transfer calculations. The results of calculations for the Einstein A-coefficients are given in an appendix, where the entries for the X-X and A-A transitions depend on the assumed permanent electric-dipole moment squared. Rotational-spin-Lambda-doublet energy levels used for statistical equilibrium population densities are listed in a table.

On the basis of data from the literature and observations of both a variety of molecules in the high-velocity source of the Orion molecular cloud and high-velocity emissions in other molecular clouds, it is proposed that the high-velocity source consists of clumps of dense molecular gas which are accelerated by the high-velocity stellar wind of a pre-main sequence star. Some of the H2O maser emissions, and the H2 and Herbig-Haro-type emissions, are attributed to shocks associated with the breakup of the protostellar cocoon.

Silicon sulfide has been observed in Sgr B2 at 108.92 GHz and 90.77 GHz and in Orion A at 108.92 GHz. The column density is 1-2 x 10 to the 13th/sq cm in both sources. SiS was not seen in two other molecular clouds where SiO has been detected; nor was it seen in a variety of late-type stars with varying C/O ratios. It appears that SiS is significantly less abundant than SiO in the interstellar medium and probably at least somewhat less abundant in oxygen-rich late-type variable stars.

Results are reported for observations of millimeter-wavelength radiation in Sgr B2 at two frequencies corresponding to the transitions between the J = 5/2 and J = 3/2 Lambda-doublet sublevels in the 2 Pi(1/2) state of nitrogen sulfide. Difficulties in making a positive identification of the source of this radiation are discussed which result from the apparently anomalous ratio of the hyperfine components. However, it is noted that observations of the d-state by Gottlieb et al. (1975) showing the hyperfine components more exactly in their optically thin ratio confirm that the observed radiation is due to nitrogen sulfide.

In the shocked gas associated with the supernova remnant IC 443, it is found that the HCO(+)/CO abundance is approximately 0.004. This is about 100 times greater than in the unshocked gas in this source where the ratio is typical of molecular clouds. This increase contradicts some current models for shock chemistry which predict a decrease of HCO(+) behind shock fronts.

Sensitive measurements have been made of the profiles of various molecular lines in the direction of the BN/KL infrared complex in Orion. Similar line shapes are found for the high velocity wings ('plateau') of most lines observed. The position of the high velocity source was found in SO and HCO(+) relative to the SiO maser. A search for high velocity emission in other sources was unsuccessful.

Observations of the 183-GHz rotational transition of water vapor in interstellar molecular clouds are reported. The observations were made with a portable double-sideband superheterodyne radiometer used with the 91-cm Cassegrain telescope on board the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. An emission feature was detected in the direction of the Kleinmann-Low nebula in Orion with a peak antenna temperature of 15 K, a local standard of rest velocity of 8 km/sec, and a width of 15 km/sec. A plateau component of the emission profile is attributed to the 1-arcmin region characteristic of plateau emission from other observed molecules, with emission enhanced over that expected for thermal excitation, while the spike component observed is consistent with an optically thick source of the size of the molecular ridge in Orion at a temperature of 50 K and a column density greater than or equal to 3 x 10 to the 17th/sq cm, implying that H2O is one of the more abundant species in the Orion Molecular Cloud. Emission at 183 GHz was not detected in Sgr A, Sgr B2, W3, W43, W49, W51, DR 21, NGC 1333, NGC 7027, GL 2591 or the Rho Oph cloud; it may have been detected in M 17.

The detection of transitions in NH2D at 85926.2 and 110153.4 MHz from the Orion molecular cloud is reported. An 11-m radio telescope with an 80-120 GHz cooled Cassegrain receiver and a tunable quasi-optical rejection filter was used in the investigations. Equations of statistical equilibrium for the lowest 34 energy levels of NH2D were solved. It seems unlikely that the observed lines arise in the very extended CO cloud. However, they could originate either in the molecular 'ridge' or the unresolved (Kleinmann-Low) core of the cloud or both. A column density of about 50 trillion/sq cm is deduced. The NH2D spectra, with 1 MHz resolution, are shown in a graph. Using previously reported column densities for NH3, a value of 0.05 with an estimated maximum uncertainty factor of 10 is found for the ratio NH2D/NH3.

We present a method for the analysis of spectral line shapes arising in homogeneous, moving gas clouds in which velocity and molecular line excitation have power-law dependences on radial distance from the center. Analytical expressions are obtained for radial flows, for both optically thick and optically thin lines. The additional case of an optically thick line from a differentially rotating cloud is considered qualitatively. The method is applied to the interpretation of the C(12)O line observed in the direction of the Kleinmann-Low infrared nebula in Orion. While gravitational collapse and accelerated outflows would produce lines qualitatively similar to the observed profile, it does not appear to be possible to fit either model to the observations in detail.

Two spectral features have been detected toward the Kleinmann-Low infrared nebula in Orion that agree in frequency with the 7(25)-7(16) and 7(35)-7(26) rotational transitions of the ring-structured molecule ethylene oxide (CH2)2O. A feature agreeing in frequency with the 8(24)-8(45) transition probably also was detected; however, seven other transitions in (CH2)2O were not. Additional unidentified lines were detected in Ori A and Sgr B2. Searches for H(C-14)N and (C-14)O in the luminous carbon star IRC +10216 were unsuccessful. However, an unidentified line was found in IRC +10216 that was not detected in the KL nebula.

Sensitive observations of carbon monoxide toward the Kleinmann-Low (KL) infrared nebular in Orion have revealed the presence of low-level emission extending over a radial velocity range of at least 150 km/s. The high-velocity emission appears to be localized in a region not exceeding about 1 arcmin in diameter centered on KL. The high-velocity gas is probably associated with pre-rather than post-main-sequence object(s). However, the intensity of line radiation at these high velocities is not easily explained with simple models of mass outflow, gravitational collapse, or rotation.
