Objective: To assess the clinical impact of living alone on weight gain in university students. Participants: This retrospective cohort study included 17540 male and 8854 female university students admitted to a national university in Japan. Methods: An association between living arrangement and the incidence of weight gain ≥10% and overweight/obesity (body mass index (BMI) ≥25 kg/m
2 ) was assessed using multivariable-adjusted Poisson regression models. Results: Weight gain was observed in 1889 (10.8%) male and 1516 (17.1%) female students during 3.0 and 2.9 years of the mean observational period, respectively. Living alone was identified as a significant predictor of weight gain (adjusted incidence rate ratio of living alone vs. living with family: 1.24 [1.13–1.36] and 1.76 [1.58–1.95] in male and female students, respectively) and was also as a predictor of overweight/obesity. The Japanese Society of Nuclear Cardiology (JSNC) and the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) have a relationship through a memorandum of understanding (MOU). This April, the MOU was extended for two more years. Based on this MOU, we hold a joint symposium at the JSNC annual meeting early in the summer each year. The theme of the joint symposium this year was "Inflammatory diseases of heart and large vessels". We consider the success of the joint symposium to be the fruit of the close relationship between JSNC and ASNC.

- Abstract
Clarification of the criteria for managing animal health is essential to increase the reliability of experiments and ensure transparency in animal welfare. For experiments performed in space, there is no consensus on how to care for animals owing to technical issues, launch mass limitation, and human resources. Some biological processes in mammals, such as musculoskeletal or immune processes, are altered in the space environment, and mice in space can be used to simulate morbid states, such as senescence acceleration. Thus, there is a need to establish a novel evaluation method and evaluation criteria to monitor animal health. Here, we report a novel method to evaluate the health of mice in space through a video downlink in a series of space experiments using the Multiple Artificial-gravity Research System (MARS). This method was found to be more useful in evaluating animal health in space than observations and body weight changes of the same live mice following their return to Earth. We also developed criteria to evaluate health status via a video downlink. These criteria, with “Fur condition” and “Respiratory” as key items, provided information on the daily changes in the health status of mice and helped to identify malfunctions at an early stage. Our method and criteria led to the success of our missions, and they will help establish appropriate rules for space experiments in the future.

Background. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. The prognosis of patients with HCC is generally poor, and life expectancy is difficult to predict because of various factors. Objectives: This study sought to quantify and compare the decline in volumes of cardiovascular procedures between the United States and non-U.S. institutions during the early phase of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the care of many non-COVID-19 illnesses. Reductions in diagnostic cardiovascular testing around the world have led to concerns over the implications of reduced testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. Methods: Data were submitted to the INCAPS-COVID (International Atomic Energy Agency Non-Invasive Cardiology Protocols Study of COVID-19), a multinational registry comprising 909 institutions in 108 countries (including 155 facilities in 40 U.S. states), assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. Data were obtained for April 2020 and compared with volumes of baseline procedures from March 2019. We compared laboratory characteristics, practices, and procedure volumes between U.S. and non-U.S. facilities and between U.S. geographic regions and identified factors associated with volume reduction in the United States. Results: Reductions in the volumes of procedures in the United States were similar to those in non-U.S. facilities (68% vs. 63%, respectively; p = 0.237), although U.S. facilities reported greater reductions in invasive coronary angiography (69% vs. 53%, respectively; p < 0.001). Significantly more U.S. facilities reported increased use of telehealth and patient screening measures than non-U.S. facilities, such as temperature checks, symptom screenings, and COVID-19 testing. Reductions in volumes of procedures differed between U.S. regions, with larger declines observed in the Northeast (76%) and Midwest (74%) than in the South (62%) and West (44%). Prevalence of COVID-19, staff redeployments, outpatient centers, and urban centers were associated with greater reductions in volume in U.S. facilities in a multivariable analysis. Conclusions: We observed marked reductions in U.S. cardiovascular testing in the early phase of the pandemic and significant variability between U.S. regions. The association between reductions of volumes and COVID-19 prevalence in the United States highlighted the need for proactive efforts to maintain access to cardiovascular testing in areas most affected by outbreaks of COVID-19 infection.

Objective: Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)–associated vasculitis (AAV) is pathologically characterized by focal fibrinoid necrosis, in which ANCA‐mediated neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation and subsequent endothelial cell necrosis occur. Cyclophilin D (CypD) plays an important role in mediation of cell necrosis and inflammation via the opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pores. This study was undertaken to examine the role of CypD in AAV pathogenesis. Methods: We assessed the role and mechanism of CypD in ANCA‐stimulated neutrophils in vitro by immunostaining and electron microscopy observation. We performed a comprehensive RNA‐sequencing analysis on ANCA‐treated murine neutrophils. To investigate the role of CypD in vivo, we assessed disease features in CypD‐knockout mice and wild‐type mice using 2 different murine AAV models: anti‐myeloperoxidase IgG transfer–induced AAV and spontaneous AAV. Results: In vitro experiments showed that pharmacologic and genetic inhibition of CypD suppressed ANCA‐induced NET formation via the suppression of reactive oxygen species and cytochrome c release from the mitochondria. RNA‐sequencing analyses in ANCA‐treated murine neutrophils revealed the involvement of inflammatory responses, with CypD deficiency reducing ANCA‐induced alterations in gene expression. Furthermore, analyses of upstream regulators revealed the relevance of intracellular calcium (CypD activator) and cyclosporin (CypD inhibitor) in ANCA stimulation, indicating that the CypD‐dependent opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pores is associated with ANCA‐induced neutrophil activation and NETosis. In both AAV mouse models, the genetic deletion of CypD ameliorated crescentic glomerulonephritis via the inhibition of CypD‐dependent neutrophil and endothelial necrosis. Severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) is characterized by acute respiratory distress syndrome and multiple organ dysfunction, in which the host immune response plays a pivotal role. Excessive neutrophil activation and subsequent superfluity of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) can lead to tissue damage, and several studies have shown the involvement of neutrophils in severe COVID‐19. However, the detailed responses of each neutrophil subset to SARS‐CoV‐2 infection has not been fully described. To explore this issue, we incubated normal‐density granulocytes (NDGs) and low‐density granulocytes (LDGs) with different viral titers of SARS‐CoV‐2. NDGs form NETs with chromatin fibers in response to SARS‐CoV‐2, whereas LDGs incubated with SARS‐CoV‐2 display a distinct morphology with condensed nuclei and moderate transcriptional changes. Based on these transcriptional changes, we suggest that AGO2 possibly plays a role in LDG regulation in response to SARS‐CoV‐2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
