In the photolyses of acetonitrile solutions of N,N′-dihexyl-1,2 : 4,5-benzenebis(dicarboximide) (1) and alkenes, insertion of the double bond in the alkenes into the C–N bond of the imide function of 1was observed. The insertion reaction proceeded along with a retention of the stereochemistry of the alkenes in reactions with trans- and cis-2-butene.

In the photolysis of a benzene solution of N-methyl-1,2-naphthalenedicarboximide (5) in the presence of dienes, i.e., 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene and 1,3-butadiene, insertion of one of the double bond in the dienes into a C(=O)–N bond of 5was observed to give naphthazepinediones. These products were found to convert further into cyclobutanes and α,β-unsaturated ketones via photochemical intramolecular cycloaddition and via hydrogen migration, respectively.

The densities were measured for dextran (Dex)–polyethylene glycol (PEG)–water, poly(1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (PVP)–PEG–water, and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)–PEG–water systems. In all cases, the linear relationship of the density vs. concentration plots was not affected by the occurrence of liquid–liquid phase separation. The partial specific volumes were calculated from the slopes of the straight lines of the density.

By applying the separation data of countercurrent type chromatography (centrifugal partition chromatography(CPC)) to liquid-membrane transport system(LMT), an effective simple carrier for selective LMT was found. This observation will be an important suggestion for finding out a costless carrier of selective LMT for weakly ionic or non-ionic substrates.

Glutaric anhydride underwent the Paterno–Büchi reaction with olefins and gave oxetanes in good yields. The quantum yield was 0.16. Acetic anhydride didn’t undergo this reaction contrarily.

Upon irradiation N-formyl-N-methylcyclohexene-1-carboxamide (2a) cyclized to give N-methylcyclohexane-l,1-dicarboximide (3a) in a high yield. The reaction proceeds via intramolecular hydrogen abstraction. Similarly, several other alkyl-substituted azetidine-2,4-diones were synthesized.
