Author(s): Wetter, M; Ehrlich, P; Gautier, A; Grahovac, M; Haves, P; Hu, J; Prakash, A; Robin, D; Zhang, K | Abstract: The current process for specifying, installing and commissioning building control sequences is largely manual and based on ambiguous natural language specifications. It lacks a formal end-to-end quality control and it has been shown not to deliver high performance sequences at scale. While high-performance HVAC control sequences enable significant reductions in energy consumption, errors in implementing the control logic are common even for less advanced sequences. To improve this situation, we present a digitized building control delivery workflow with formal end-to-end verification, a Control Description Language for the digital specification of building control sequences within this workflow, and software tools that enable digitization of this process. Using the process and tools introduced here, mechanical designers can customize, test and improve these sequences within annual energy simulation, store them in a library for use in other projects, and export them for bidding. Control providers can implement the sequences on existing control product lines through code generation. Commissioning providers can formally verify whether as-installed sequences conform to the digital design specification that was exported by the mechanical designer. Moreover, control product development teams can use the reference implementations of these libraries within their product testing to ensure that their products reproduce the behavior of the reference implementations. This paper presents this process, the language and the supporting software, together with examples of all of the above steps. The presented work has given rise to a new proposed standard, ASHRAE 231P, that will allow digitizing the building control delivery process through the standardization of a control-vendor independent format for exchanging control logic that we pioneered through the here presented work.

Semantic metadata standards pave the way for interoperability by providing building operators and application developers with common schemes to describe building resources. Applications can query building metadata models to retrieve the set of entities and relationships they need to operate, instead of hard-coding references to specific points and objects from the underlying data sources. Currently, querying such models requires the developer to be very specific when formulating queries in order to obtain meaningful answers (or any answer). The developer is inevitably expected to be familiar with the systems and components of the buildings being queried, as well as the schema used to represent them. The variety of buildings - both in the composition of their subsystems and in how they happen to be modeled - means that the developer will need to use multiple queries in order to retrieve necessary results. This is complex, time-consuming and error-prone. To address this limitation, we investigate query relaxation as a technique to facilitate discovery of meaningful building resources in a collection of ontology-based buildings data. We evaluate our query relaxation approach over a set of Brick models and demonstrate its use in the context of real-world building applications., BuildSys '21: Proceedings of the 8th ACM International Conference on Systems for Energy-Efficient Buildings, Cities, and Transportation, ISBN:978-1-4503-9114-6

Robust and accurate building energy load forecasting is important for helping building managers and utilities to plan, budget, and strategize energy resources in advance. With recent prevalent adoption of smart-meters in buildings, a significant amount of building energy consumption data became available. Many studies have developed physics-based white box models and data-driven black box models to predict building energy consumption; however, they require extensive prior knowledge about building system, need a large set of training data, or lack robustness to different forecasting scenarios. In this paper, we introduce a new building energy forecasting method based on Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) that incorporates physical insights about load data characteristics to improve accuracy while reducing training requirements. The GPR is a non-parametric regression method that models the data as a joint Gaussian distribution with mean and covariance functions and forecast using the Bayesian updating. We model the covariance function of the GPR to reflect the data patterns in different forecasting horizon scenarios, as prior knowledge. Our method takes advantage of the modeling flexibility and computational efficiency of the GPR while benefiting from the physical insights to further improve the training efficiency and accuracy. We evaluate our method with three field datasets from two university campuses (Carnegie Mellon University and Stanford University) for both short- and long-term load forecasting. The results show that our method performs more accurately, especially when the training dataset is small, compared to other state-of-the-art forecasting models (up to 2.95 times smaller prediction error).

- Abstract
Context: Good prescription practices are needed to ensure rational drug use. Does training of interns on prescription self-audit improve the quality of prescriptions? Aim: to evaluate a skill-based training program for interns on self-audit of their prescription practices. Methods and Material: An interventional workshop on prescription self-audit was conducted for interns. In the workshop, 25 interns replicated 10 random prescriptions written by them during their Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI) (Cycle 1= C1). Then, the interns were trained to audit these prescriptions using WHO core prescribing indicators and interpret the results. They were asked to identify the lacunae in their prescriptions that required improvement. The same process was repeated after 2 weeks (Cycle 2= C2). C1 and C2 prescription parameters were compared to assess the effectiveness of the training. Perceptions of the interns were assessed using Likert’s scale. Results: The mean drugs per prescription reduced from 3.19±0.9 in C1 to 2.972±0.6 in C2. The percentage of antibiotics in C1 and C2 were 42.4% and 60%, and injections were 60.4% and 48% respectively. In terms of polypharmacy, the use of injectables and antibiotics, values obtained were higher than the acceptable range set by WHO. The drugs prescribed by generic name in C1 and C2 were 37.6 % and 68.4 % and the improvement was statistically significant. Conclusions: There was an improvement in the prescribing practices of interns with sequential self-audit. There is a perceived gap regarding rational drug use which may be bridged by further training.

- Abstract
Excavation is an important part of nay construction project whereby removing earth to form cavity in the ground. This paper mainly focuses on cut and fill excavation by identify the cost of labor, material and equipment. Besides that, this paper aims to have better understanding on Bill of Quantity using coding. The method implemented for this study is using GNU Octave, version 6.2.0 and manual calculation to calculate the construction cost incurred during excavation process. Referring to the manual calculation, the overall cost obtained for the project is RM 27352.15 whereas using GNU Octave software obtained for the project is RM 27352.15. Thus, both GNU Octave software and manual calculation has zero percent difference. Octave is a computer programme that is designed for numerical computations and able to solve linear and nonlinear mathematical problems.

Many different digital representations of a building are produced over the course of its lifecycle. While these representations individually contain metadata required to support different stages of the building's lifecycle, they are largely not interoperable due to differences in structure, syntax and semantics. This impedes the development and deployment of data-driven applications providing fault detection and diagnosis, virtual metering or optimal control. [4] introduces a new platform for the continuous curation of a unified, Brick [1]-based metadata model that can be maintained throughout the building lifecycle. In this demonstration, we present a live proof-of-concept implementation of the platform with support for several metadata representations in the context of a simulated building lifecycle.

Many different digital representations of a building are produced over the course of its lifecycle. These representations contain the metadata required to support different stages of the building, from initial planning and design, to construction and commissioning, through operations, audits, retrofits and maintenance. However, because of differences in the semantics, structure and syntax of these representations, the metadata they contain is not interoperable. We present a novel method for leveraging these representations to create a unified, authoritative Brick metadata model for a building that can be continually maintained over the course of the building lifecycle. A simple synchronization protocol relays inferred Brick metadata from existing metadata sources such as gbXML, BuildingSync, Project Haystack and Modelica to a central integration server, which merges the metadata into a valid Brick model.

As deep reinforcement learning (DRL) continues to gain interest in the smart building research community, there is a transition from simulation-based evaluations to deploying DRL control strategies in actual buildings. While the efficacy of a solution could depend on a particular implementation, there are common obstacles that developers have to overcome to deliver an effective controller. Additionally, a deployment in a physical building can invalidate some of the assumptions made during the controller development. Assumptions on the sensor placement or on the equipment behavior can quickly come undone. This paper presents some of the significant assumptions made during the development of DRL based controllers that could affect their operations in a physical building. Furthermore, a preliminary evaluation revealed that controllers developed with some of these assumptions can incur twice the expected costs when they are deployed in a building.

Background: The NEonate and Children audiT of Anaesthesia pRactice IN Europe (NECTARINE) prospective observational study reported critical events requiring intervention during 35.2% of 6542 anesthetic episodes in 5609 infants up to 60 weeks postmenstrual age. The United Kingdom (UK) was one of 31 participating countries. Methods: Subgroup analysis of UK NECTARINE cases (12.8% of cohort) to identify perioperative critical events that triggered medical interventions. Secondary aims were to describe UK practice, identify factors more commonly associated with critical events, and compare 30‐day morbidity and mortality between participating UK and nonUK centers. Results: Seventeen UK centers recruited 722 patients (68.7% male, 36.1% born preterm, and 48.1% congenital anomalies) undergoing anesthesia for 876 surgical or diagnostic procedures at 25–60 weeks postmenstrual age. Repeat anesthesia/surgery was common: 17.6% patients prior to and 14.4% during the recruitment period. Perioperative critical events triggered interventions in 300/876 (34.3%) cases. Cardiovascular instability (16.9% of cases) and/or reduced oxygenation (11.4%) were more common in younger patients and those with co‐morbidities or requiring preoperative intensive support. A higher proportion of UK than nonUK cases were graded as ASA‐Physical Status scores >2 or requiring urgent or emergency procedures, and 39% required postoperative intensive care. Thirty‐day morbidity (complications in 17.2%) and mortality (8/715, 1.1%) did not differ from nonUK participants. Conclusions: Perioperative critical events and co‐morbidities are common in neonates and young infants. Thirty‐day morbidity and mortality data did not demonstrate national differences in outcome. Identifying factors associated with increased risk informs preoperative assessment, resource allocation, and discussions between clinicians and families. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We assessed the clinical outcomes of patients with critical limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) who underwent interwoven nitinol stent (Supera) implantation for significant stenoses of the femoropopliteal segment. In this retrospective cohort study, 116 consecutive patients with CLTI who were treated with Supera stents between September 2015 and March 2020 were included in this analysis. Primary endpoint analysis was completed for amputation-free survival, target lesion revascularization (TLR), and mortality. After a mean follow-up time of 3.4 years, 21 (18%) patients had undergone amputations, 3 (2.6%) died, and, overall, the amputation-free survival rate was 81%. TLR occurred in 21 (18%) patients, resulting in the freedom from target lesion revascularization of 82%. The average Wagner score for all patients was 2.8 ± 1.1. A subgroup analysis of 57 patients revealed a median ulcer size of 3.0 cm2 [1.65, 9.0], with complete healing for 45 patients by 20 months. The Wagner score of this subgroup decreased by an average of 3.4 ±.9 points. Supera stents can be used together with other endovascular therapies and are a safe and effective treatment modality for CLTI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
