Using a centrifugal method of bending, a change in the heat resistance of the Ti3Al compound was studied as a function of its alloying with one atomic percent with elements of group 4-8 and 4-B of the periodic system: Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, C, Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb. It is established that with an increase in the atomic number of an element the heat resistance within each group is increased. Alloying the Ti3Al with vanadium or molybdenum considerably increases the deformation property of alloys at high temperatures. Alloys based on titanium aluminide Ti3Al alloyed with one atomic percent W, Sn, Mo, Hf, Si, Zr, Ta, Nb, and V have the greatest heat resistance at 750C and stress of 25 kgf/sq. mm., Edited trans. of mono. The study results in a conclusion concerning the existence of a continuous solid solution between beta-titanium and tungsten at high temperatures. Some data on the structure and properties of Ti-Al-Fe alloys are presented. The phase equilibria in alloys in the system Ti-Al-V were studies. However, the data available in the literature on phase equilibria in the systems Ti-Al-Fe and Ti-Al-V require refinement, as they are insufficiently complete. In accordance with the developed physicochemical theory of heat resistance and the four basic types of equilibrium diagrams, four types of diagrams of phase vs heat resistance of titanium systems were developed. Binary titanium systems are distributed among these four types according to the character of influence of the elements on the heat resistance of titanium. The established principles of change in the heat resistance as a function of the composition and structure of binary titanium systems are valuable for research on multicomponent titanium systems and for establishing the optimal compositions for new heat-resistant titanium alloys. On the basis of these principles, in the multicomponent systems Ti-Ai-Zr-Sn, Ti-Al-Zr-Mo-Fe, Ti-Al-Zr-Sn-Mo, compositions for the new heat-resistant alloys ST-1, ST-3, ST-4, and ST-5 were established. The alloys ST-1 and ST-3 have high short-term strength up to 600 degrees, and alloys ST-4 and ST-5 - up to 800 degrees. The stress-rupture strengths at 600 degrees for 100 hours are: for ST-1 - 25.5 kgf/sq mm, for ST-3 - 16.5 kgf/sq mm, and for ST-4 - 33 kgf/sq mm. The effect of heat treatment of Ti-Al alloys of constitution near to that of Ti3Al and contg. 15.9 and 16.6 percent Al by wt. on their mech. properties were studied. The modulus of elasticity E and the modulus of transverse elasticity G were detd. by the resonance method. The specimens were annealed at 600 degrees for 200 hrs., then were heated in sealed quartz ampuls at 800, 900, 1000, 1100, 1150, 1200, and 1300 degrees for 48, 24, 18, 3, 2, 1, and 0.4 hrs., resp., and quenched in water. The results obtained show the continuous decrease of E and G, as the quenching temps. increase in the range of 900-1100 degrees for 15.9 percent and 900-1150 degrees for 16.6 percent Al. Further increasing of these temps. caused increase of E and G. Afterwards the specimen of 15.9 percent Al was quenched from 1100 degrees again and the effect of the duration of its tempering at 600, 700, and 800 degrees on the parameters investigated was studied. G and E increase only during the 1st 5-10 hrs. of tempering at 600-700 degrees. Further holding of alloy at these temps. did not affect these parameters. The tempering at 800 degrees caused increase of G and E only during the 1st 2 hrs. and further holding caused decrease of these parameters down to values for as-quenched state., Edited machine trans. of mono. The question of the solubility of elements of the periodic system in iron depending upon the relationship of their atomic diameters is considered. Elements which have a difference of atomic diameters not exceeding 8% of the atomic diameter of iron will form with iron continuous solid solutions; a difference from 8 to 15% is characterized by the formation of limited solid solutions, and in the case of a difference exceeding 20%, the elements are not dissolved and are not alloyed. Investigation of the composition diagram of the binary system Cr--NiAl showed the possibility of singular triangulation of the general ternary system Ni--Cr--Al and separation of a secondary system, Ni--Cr--NiAl, as the object of independent investigation. During the study of the ternary system Ni--Cr--NiAl, the following served as the basic binary systems: the Ni--Cr system, the Ni-NiAl system, and the Cr-NiAl system. An increase in the heat-resistance of titanium is explained by the formation of solid solutions and compounds with a varying degree of dispersity and chemical bond strength, i.e. a solution and dispersion mechanism for the hardening of liter - and beta - solid solutions and the formation of strong titanium compounds. Of particular importance for the heat-resistance of titanium systems are titanium compounds which are formed in them during crystallization, as well as from solid solutions, for example in Ti-Al, Ti-Cu, Ti-Si, Ti-Sn systems and many others. The regularities established for changes in heat resistance according to the composition and structure of binary and ternary titanium systems were used to investigate the heat resistance of more complex titanium systems and to establish the optimum compositions of new heat-resisting titanium systems.
