101. Nonlinear Functional Estimation: Functional Detectability and Full Information Estimation

Abstract: We consider the design of functional estimators, i.e., approaches to compute an estimate of a nonlinear function of the state of a general nonlinear dynamical system subject to process noise based on noisy output measurements. To this end, we introduce a novel functional detectability notion in the form of incremental input/output-to-output stability ($\delta$-IOOS). We show that $\delta$-IOOS is a necessary condition for the existence of a functional estimator satisfying an input-to-output type stability property. Additionally, we prove that a system is functional detectable if and only if it admits a corresponding $\delta$-IOOS Lyapunov function. Furthermore, $\delta$-IOOS is shown to be a sufficient condition for the design of a stable functional estimator by introducing the design of a full information estimation (FIE) approach for functional estimation. Together, we present a unified framework to study functional estimation with a detectability condition, which is necessary and sufficient for the existence of a stable functional estimator, and a corresponding functional estimator design. 102. Towards Efficient Time Stepping for Numerical Shape Correspondence

Abstract: The computation of correspondences between shapes is a principal task in shape analysis. To this end, methods based on partial differential equations (PDEs) have been established, encompassing e.g. the classic heat kernel signature as well as numerical solution schemes for geometric PDEs. In this work we focus on the latter approach. We consider here several time stepping schemes. The goal of this investigation is to assess, if one may identify a useful property of methods for time integration for the shape analysis context. Thereby we investigate the dependence on time step size, since the class of implicit schemes that are useful candidates in this context should ideally yield an invariant behaviour with respect to this parameter. To this end we study integration of heat and wave equation on a manifold. In order to facilitate this study, we propose an efficient, unified model order reduction framework for these models. We show that specific $l_0$ stable schemes are favourable for numerical shape analysis. 103. Automatic nonlinear MPC approximation with closed-loop guarantees

Abstract: Safety guarantees are vital in many control applications, such as robotics. Model predictive control (MPC) provides a constructive framework for controlling safety-critical systems, but is limited by its computational complexity. We address this problem by presenting a novel algorithm that automatically computes an explicit approximation to nonlinear MPC schemes while retaining closed-loop guarantees. Specifically, the problem can be reduced to a function approximation problem, which we then tackle by proposing ALKIA-X, the Adaptive and Localized Kernel Interpolation Algorithm with eXtrapolated reproducing kernel Hilbert space norm. ALKIA-X is a non-iterative algorithm that ensures numerically well-conditioned computations, a fast-to-evaluate approximating function, and the guaranteed satisfaction of any desired bound on the approximation error. Hence, ALKIA-X automatically computes an explicit function that approximates the MPC, yielding a controller suitable for safety-critical systems and high sampling rates. We apply ALKIA-X to approximate two nonlinear MPC schemes, demonstrating reduced computational demand and applicability to realistic problems., Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. 104. Ultra-broadband bright light emission from a one-dimensional inorganic van der Waals material

Abstract: One-dimensional (1D) van der Waals materials have emerged as an intriguing playground to explore novel electronic and optical effects. We report on inorganic one-dimensional SbPS4 nanotubes bundles obtained via mechanical exfoliation from bulk crystals. The ability to mechanically exfoliate SbPS4 nanobundles offers the possibility of applying modern 2D material fabrication techniques to create mixed-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures. We find that SbPS4 can readily be exfoliated to yield long (> 10 {\mu}m) nanobundles with thicknesses that range from of 1.3 - 200 nm. We investigated the optical response of semiconducting SbPS4 nanobundles and discovered that upon excitation with blue light, they emit bright and ultra-broadband red light with a quantum yield similar to that of hBN-encapsulated MoSe2. We discovered that the ultra-broadband red light emission is a result of a large ~1 eV exciton binding energy and a ~200 meV exciton self-trapping energy, unprecedented in previous material studies. Due to the bright and ultra-broadband light emission, we believe that this class of inorganic 1D van der Waals semiconductors has numerous potential applications including on-chip tunable nanolasers, and applications that require ultra-violet to visible light conversion such as lighting and sensing. Overall, our findings open avenues for harnessing the unique characteristics of these nanomaterials, advancing both fundamental research and practical optoelectronic applications.

105. How do particles with complex interactions self-assemble?

Abstract: In living cells, proteins self-assemble into large functional structures based on specific interactions between molecularly complex patches. Due to this complexity, protein self-assembly results from a competition between a large number of distinct interaction energies, of the order of one per pair of patches. Current self-assembly models however typically ignore this aspect, and the principles by which it determines the large-scale structure of protein assemblies are largely unknown. Here, we use Monte-Carlo simulations and machine learning to start to unravel these principles. We observe that despite widespread geometrical frustration, aggregates of particles with complex interactions fall within only a few categories that often display high degrees of spatial order, including crystals, fibers, and oligomers. We then successfully identify the most relevant aspect of the interaction complexity in predicting these outcomes, namely the particles' ability to form periodic structures. Our results provide a first extensive characterization of the rich design space associated with identical particles with complex interactions, and could inspire engineered self-assembling nanoobjects as well as help understand the emergence of robust functional protein structures., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. 106. Towards targeted exploration for non-stochastic disturbances

Abstract: We present a novel targeted exploration strategy for linear time-invariant systems without stochastic assumptions on the noise, i.e., without requiring independence or zero mean, allowing for deterministic model misspecifications. This work utilizes classical data-dependent uncertainty bounds on the least-squares parameter estimates in the presence of energy-bounded noise. We provide a sufficient condition on the exploration data that ensures a desired error bound on the estimated parameter. Using common approximations, we derive a semidefinite program to compute the optimal sinusoidal input excitation. Finally, we highlight the differences and commonalities between the developed non-stochastic targeted exploration strategy and conventional exploration strategies based on classical identification bounds through a numerical example., Comment: in Proc. Abstract: DUNE is an international experiment dedicated to addressing some of the questions at the forefront of particle physics and astrophysics, including the mystifying preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early universe. The dual-site experiment will employ an intense neutrino beam focused on a near and a far detector as it aims to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and to make high-precision measurements of the PMNS matrix parameters, including the CP-violating phase. It will also stand ready to observe supernova neutrino bursts, and seeks to observe nucleon decay as a signature of a grand unified theory underlying the standard model. The DUNE far detector implements liquid argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) technology, and combines the many tens-of-kiloton fiducial mass necessary for rare event searches with the sub-centimeter spatial resolution required to image those events with high precision. The addition of a photon detection system enhances physics capabilities for all DUNE physics drivers and opens prospects for further physics explorations. Given its size, the far detector will be implemented as a set of modules, with LArTPC designs that differ from one another as newer technologies arise. In the vertical drift LArTPC design, a horizontal cathode bisects the detector, creating two stacked drift volumes in which ionization charges drift towards anodes at either the top or bottom. The anodes are composed of perforated PCB layers with conductive strips, enabling reconstruction in 3D. Light-trap-style photon detection modules are placed both on the cryostat's side walls and on the central cathode where they are optically powered. Abstract: This study investigated student perceived shared-metacognition--self-regulation and co-regulation--as explained by three teaching presence sub-elements--"Instructional Design, Direct Instruction, and Facilitation"--in an online case-based course. 113 online graduate students enrolled in an advanced instructional design course participated in the study. Data were collected through the Community of Inquiry survey and a shared metacognition questionnaire survey. The findings revealed that students perceived "Direct Instruction" as a significant predictor of their shared-metacognition (self-regulation and co-regulation) in online case-based courses. The findings highlight the importance of teaching presence for "Direct Instruction" to increase self and co-regulation for maximizing the quality of online case-based instruction. 109. Comparing Blended and Online Learners' Self-Efficacy, Self-Regulation, and Actual Learning in the Context of Educational Technology

Abstract: In this quantitative comparative study, we explored the differences in technology integration self-efficacy, use of self-regulated learning strategies, and actual learning between preservice teachers enrolled in blended sections (n = 275) and online sections (n = 50) of the same introductory educational technology course. The results revealed that preservice teachers enrolled in the online format of the course reported a significantly higher level of using time management strategies, but a significantly lower level of employing help-seeking strategies compared to preservice teachers enrolled in the blended format of the course. However, no significant differences in technology integration self-efficacy and actual learning existed. Results offer insight for designing educational technology courses that align with the needs of both online and blended learners and preparing preservice teachers that likely will be responsible for facilitating blended and online learning with their own students.

Abstract: Dark matter particles could be superheavy, provided their lifetime is much longer than the age of the universe. Using the sensitivity of the Pierre Auger Observatory to ultra-high energy neutrinos and photons, we constrain a specific extension of the Standard Model of particle physics that meets the lifetime requirement for a superheavy particle by coupling it to a sector of ultra-light sterile neutrinos. Our results show that, for a typical dark coupling constant of 0.1, the mixing angle $\theta_m$ between active and sterile neutrinos must satisfy, roughly, $\theta_m \lesssim 1.5\times 10^{-6}(M_X/10^9~\mathrm{GeV})^{-2}$ for a mass $M_X$ of the dark-matter particle between $10^8$ and $10^{11}~$GeV., Comment: Version accepted for publication in PRD Letters, including Supplemental Material

119. Hierarchical Cut Labelling -- Scaling Up Distance Queries on Road Networks

Abstract: Answering the shortest-path distance between two arbitrary locations is a fundamental problem in road networks. Labelling-based solutions are the current state-of-the-arts to render fast response time, which can generally be categorised into hub-based labellings, highway-based labellings, and tree decomposition labellings. Hub-based and highway-based labellings exploit hierarchical structures of road networks with the aim to reduce labelling size for improving query efficiency. However, these solutions still result in large search spaces on distance labels at query time, particularly when road networks are large. Tree decomposition labellings leverage a hierarchy of vertices to reduce search spaces over distance labels at query time, but such a hierarchy is generated using tree decomposition techniques, which may yield very large labelling sizes and slow querying. In this paper, we propose a novel solution \emph{hierarchical cut 2-hop labelling (HC2L)} to address the drawbacks of the existing works. Our solution combines the benefits of hierarchical structures from both perspectives - reduce the size of a distance labelling at preprocessing time and further reduce the search space on a distance labelling at query time. At its core, we propose a new hierarchy, \emph{balanced tree hierarchy}, which enables a fast, efficient data structure to reduce the size of distance labelling and to select a very small subset of labels to compute the shortest-path distance at query time. To speed up the construction process of HC2L, we further propose a parallel variant of our method, namely HC2L$^p$. We have evaluated our solution on 10 large real-world road networks through extensive experiments.

Abstract: Scientific research demands reproducibility and transparency, particularly in data-intensive fields like electrophysiology. Electrophysiology data is typically analyzed using scripts that generate output files, including figures. Handling these results poses several challenges due to the complexity and interactivity of the analysis process. These stem from the difficulty to discern the analysis steps, parameters, and data flow from the results, making knowledge transfer and findability challenging in collaborative settings. Provenance information tracks data lineage and processes applied to it, and provenance capture during the execution of an analysis script can address those challenges. We present Alpaca (Automated Lightweight Provenance Capture), a tool that captures fine-grained provenance information with minimal user intervention when running data analysis pipelines implemented in Python scripts. Alpaca records inputs, outputs, and function parameters and structures information according to the W3C PROV standard. We demonstrate the tool using a realistic use case involving multichannel local field potential recordings of a neurophysiological experiment, highlighting how the tool makes result details known in a standardized manner in order to address the challenges of the analysis process. Ultimately, using Alpaca will help to represent results according to the FAIR principles, which will improve research reproducibility and facilitate sharing the results of data analyses.

121. Improving Deep Learning Optimization through Constrained Parameter Regularization

Abstract: Regularization is a critical component in deep learning. The most commonly used approach, weight decay, applies a constant penalty coefficient uniformly across all parameters. This may be overly restrictive for some parameters, while insufficient for others. To address this, we present Constrained Parameter Regularization (CPR) as an alternative to traditional weight decay. Unlike the uniform application of a single penalty, CPR enforces an upper bound on a statistical measure, such as the L$_2$-norm, of individual parameter matrices. Consequently, learning becomes a constraint optimization problem, which we tackle using an adaptation of the augmented Lagrangian method. CPR introduces only a minor runtime overhead and only requires setting an upper bound. We propose simple yet efficient mechanisms for initializing this bound, making CPR rely on no hyperparameter or one, akin to weight decay. Our empirical studies on computer vision and language modeling tasks demonstrate CPR's effectiveness. 122. Revisiting Cont's Stylized Facts for Modern Stock Markets

Abstract: In 2001, Rama Cont introduced a now-widely used set of 'stylized facts' to synthesize empirical studies of financial price changes (returns), resulting in 11 statistical properties common to a large set of assets and markets. These properties are viewed as constraints a model should be able to reproduce in order to accurately represent returns in a market. It has not been established whether the characteristics Cont noted in 2001 still hold for modern markets following significant regulatory shifts and technological advances. It is also not clear whether a given time series of financial returns for an asset will express all 11 stylized facts. We test both of these propositions by attempting to replicate each of Cont's 11 stylized facts for intraday returns of the individual stocks in the Dow 30, using the same authoritative data as that used by the U.S. regulator from October 2018 - March 2019. We find conclusive evidence for eight of Cont's original facts and no support for the remaining three. Our study represents the first test of Cont's 11 stylized facts against a consistent set of stocks, therefore providing insight into how these stylized facts should be viewed in the context of modern stock markets., Comment: 31 pages, 32 figures

Abstract: While multi-task learning (MTL) has gained significant attention in recent years, its underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Recent methods did not yield consistent performance improvements over single task learning (STL) baselines, underscoring the importance of gaining more profound insights about challenges specific to MTL. In our study, we investigate paradigms in MTL in the context of STL: First, the impact of the choice of optimizer has only been mildly investigated in MTL. We show the pivotal role of common STL tools such as the Adam optimizer in MTL empirically in various experiments. To further investigate Adam's effectiveness, we theoretical derive a partial loss-scale invariance under mild assumptions. Second, the notion of gradient conflicts has often been phrased as a specific problem in MTL. We delve into the role of gradient conflicts in MTL and compare it to STL. For angular gradient alignment we find no evidence that this is a unique problem in MTL. We emphasize differences in gradient magnitude as the main distinguishing factor. Abstract: The minimum driving force strategy is applied to promote the exciton dissociation in organic solar cells (OSCs) without significant loss of open-circuit voltage. However, this strategy tends to promote F\"orster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from the donor to the acceptor (D-A), a consequence generally ignored until recently. In spite of the advances reported on this topic, the correlation between charge-transfer (CT) state binding energy and driving force remains unclear, especially in the presence of D-A FRET. To address this question, we employ a kinetic approach to model the charge separation in ten different D/A blends using non-fullerene acceptors. The model considers the influence of FRET on photoluminescence (PL) quenching efficiency. It successfully predicts the measured PL quenching efficiency for D or A photoexcitation in those blends, including the ones for which the D-A FRET process is relevant. Furthermore, the application of the model allows to quantifying the fractions of quenching loss associated with charge transfer and energy transfer. Fundamental relationships that controls the exciton dissociation was derived evidencing the key roles played by the Marcus inverted regime, exciton lifetime and mainly by the correlation between the driving force and binding energy of CT state. 125. The Binding Energy of Triplet Excitons in Non-Fullerene Acceptors: The Effects of Fluorination and Chlorination

Abstract: One strategy to improve the photovoltaic properties of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) is the rational fluorination or chlorination of those molecules. Although this modification improves important acceptor properties, little is known about the effects on the triplet states. Here, we combine the polarizable continuum model with optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functional to investigate this issue. We find that fluorination or chlorination of NFAs decreases the degree of HOMO-LUMO overlap along these molecules. Consequently, the energy gap between $T_{1}$ and $S_{1}$ states, $\Delta E_{ST} = E_{S_{1}} - E_{T_{1}}$, also decreases. This effect simultaneously enhances the generation of triplet excitons and reduce the binding energy of the triplet excitons ($E_{b,T}$) which favor their dissociation into free charges. Interestingly, although Cl has a lower electronegativity than F, the chlorination is more effective to reduce $\Delta E_{ST}$. Since chlorination of NFAs is easier than fluorination, Cl substitution can be a useful approach to enhance solar energy harvesting using triplet excitons., Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Abstract: The chemical stability of nonfullerene acceptor (NFA) is the Achilles' heel of the research on state-of-the-art organic solar cells (OSC). The fragility of the NFA is essentially due to the weak bond that links the central donor core of the molecules with their acceptor moieties at the edges. Here we proposed the replacement of thiophene at the outer-core position of traditional NFAs for tellurophene, a hitherto unexplored modification. Since tellurium is a distinctive element among chalcogens, the basic features of Te compounds cannot be deduced straightforwardly from the properties of their lighter analogues, S and Se. The modeled Te-based NFAs presented interesting features like stronger intra- and intermolecular interactions induced by a distinctive secondary bond effect between the end acceptor moiety and the outer chalcogen atom. This design strategy resulted in stiffer molecules with red-shifted absorption spectra and less susceptible to degradation verified through stress tests and vibrational spectra analysis. Besides that, a weakened exciton binding energy has been found, opening the possibility of blends with a lower driving force. 127. A Systematic Review of Approximability Results for Traveling Salesman Problems leveraging the TSP-T3CO Definition Scheme

Abstract: The traveling salesman (or salesperson) problem, short TSP, is a problem of strong interest to many researchers from mathematics, economics, and computer science. Manifold TSP variants occur in nearly every scientific field and application domain: engineering, physics, biology, life sciences, and manufacturing just to name a few. Several thousand papers are published on theoretical research or application-oriented results each year. This paper provides the first systematic survey on the best currently known approximability and inapproximability results for well-known TSP variants such as the "standard" TSP, Path TSP, Bottleneck TSP, Maximum Scatter TSP, Generalized TSP, Clustered TSP, Traveling Purchaser Problem, Profitable Tour Problem, Quota TSP, Prize-Collecting TSP, Orienteering Problem, Time-dependent TSP, TSP with Time Windows, and the Orienteering Problem with Time Windows. The foundation of our survey is the definition scheme T3CO, which we propose as a uniform, easy-to-use and extensible means for the formal and precise definition of TSP variants. Applying T3CO to formally define the variant studied by a paper reveals subtle differences within the same named variant and also brings out the differences between the variants more clearly. We achieve the first comprehensive, concise, and compact representation of approximability results by using T3CO definitions. This makes it easier to understand the approximability landscape and the assumptions under which certain results hold. Open gaps become more evident and results can be compared more easily.

Abstract: The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA), part of the Pierre Auger Observatory, is currently the largest array of radio antenna stations deployed for the detection of cosmic rays, spanning an area of $17$ km$^2$ with 153 radio stations. It detects the radio emission of extensive air showers produced by cosmic rays in the $30-80$ MHz band. Here, we report the AERA measurements of the depth of the shower maximum ($X_\text{max}$), a probe for mass composition, at cosmic-ray energies between $10^{17.5}$ to $10^{18.8}$ eV, which show agreement with earlier measurements with the fluorescence technique at the Pierre Auger Observatory. We show advancements in the method for radio $X_\text{max}$ reconstruction by comparison to dedicated sets of CORSIKA/CoREAS air-shower simulations, including steps of reconstruction-bias identification and correction, which is of particular importance for irregular or sparse radio arrays. Using the largest set of radio air-shower measurements to date, we show the radio $X_\text{max}$ resolution as a function of energy, reaching a resolution better than $15$ g cm$^{-2}$ at the highest energies, demonstrating that radio $X_\text{max}$ measurements are competitive with the established high-precision fluorescence technique. In addition, we developed a procedure for performing an extensive data-driven study of systematic uncertainties, including the effects of acceptance bias, reconstruction bias, and the investigation of possible residual biases. Abstract: We show, for the first time, radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum ($X_\text{max}$) of air showers induced by cosmic rays that are compared to measurements of the established fluorescence method at the same location. Using measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory we show full compatibility between our radio and the previously published fluorescence data set, and between a subset of air showers observed simultaneously with both radio and fluorescence techniques, a measurement setup unique to the Pierre Auger Observatory. Furthermore, we show radio $X_\text{max}$ resolution as a function of energy and demonstrate the ability to make competitive high-resolution $X_\text{max}$ measurements with even a sparse radio array. With this, we show that the radio technique is capable of cosmic-ray mass composition studies, both at Auger and at other experiments., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett

130. Matrix-product-state-based band-Lanczos solver for quantum cluster approaches

Abstract: We present a matrix-product state (MPS) based band-Lanczos method as solver for quantum cluster methods such as the variational cluster approximation (VCA). While a na\"ive implementation of MPS as cluster solver would barely improve its range of applicability, we show that our approach makes it possible to treat cluster geometries well beyond the reach of exact diagonalization methods. The key modifications we introduce are a continuous energy truncation combined with a convergence criterion that is more robust against approximation errors introduced by the MPS representation and provides a bound to deviations in the resulting Green's function. The potential of the resulting cluster solver is demonstrated by computing the self-energy functional for the single-band Hubbard model at half filling in the strongly correlated regime, on different cluster geometries. Here, we find that only when treating large cluster sizes, observables can be extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit, which we demonstrate at the example of the staggered magnetization. Treating clusters sizes with up to $6\times 6$ sites we obtain excellent agreement with quantum Monte-Carlo results., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures and appendix; comments very welcome

Abstract: The wind mission Aeolus of the European Space Agency was a groundbreaking achievement for Earth observation. Between 2018 and 2023, the space-borne lidar instrument ALADIN onboard the Aeolus satellite measured atmospheric wind profiles with global coverage which contributed to improving the accuracy of numerical weather prediction. The precision of the wind observations, however, declined over the course of the mission due to a progressive loss of the atmospheric backscatter signal. The analysis of the root cause was supported by the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina whose fluorescence detector registered the ultraviolet laser pulses emitted from the instrument in space, thereby offering an estimation of the laser energy at the exit of the instrument for several days in 2019, 2020 and 2021. The reconstruction of the laser beam not only allowed for an independent assessment of the Aeolus performance, but also helped to improve the accuracy in the determination of the laser beam's ground track on single pulse level. The results presented in this paper set a precedent for the monitoring of space lasers by ground-based telescopes and open new possibilities for the calibration of cosmic-ray observatories., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

132. Sampling Multimodal Distributions with the Vanilla Score: Benefits of Data-Based Initialization

Abstract: There is a long history, as well as a recent explosion of interest, in statistical and generative modeling approaches based on score functions -- derivatives of the log-likelihood of a distribution. In seminal works, Hyv\"arinen proposed vanilla score matching as a way to learn distributions from data by computing an estimate of the score function of the underlying ground truth, and established connections between this method and established techniques like Contrastive Divergence and Pseudolikelihood estimation. It is by now well-known that vanilla score matching has significant difficulties learning multimodal distributions. Although there are various ways to overcome this difficulty, the following question has remained unanswered -- is there a natural way to sample multimodal distributions using just the vanilla score? Inspired by a long line of related experimental works, we prove that the Langevin diffusion with early stopping, initialized at the empirical distribution, and run on a score function estimated from data successfully generates natural multimodal distributions (mixtures of log-concave distributions).

133. Bandwidth Parameterized by Cluster Vertex Deletion Number

Abstract: Given a graph $G$ and an integer $b$, Bandwidth asks whether there exists a bijection $\pi$ from $V(G)$ to $\{1, \ldots, |V(G)|\}$ such that $\max_{\{u, v \} \in E(G)} | \pi(u) - \pi(v) | \leq b$. This is a classical NP-complete problem, known to remain NP-complete even on very restricted classes of graphs, such as trees of maximum degree 3 and caterpillars of hair length 3. In the realm of parameterized complexity, these results imply that the problem remains NP-hard on graphs of bounded pathwidth, while it is additionally known to be W[1]-hard when parameterized by the treedepth of the input graph. In contrast, the problem does become FPT when parameterized by the vertex cover number of the input graph. In this paper, we make progress towards the parameterized (in)tractability of Bandwidth. We first show that it is FPT when parameterized by the cluster vertex deletion number cvd plus the clique number $\omega$ of the input graph, thus generalizing the previously mentioned result for vertex cover. On the other hand, we show that Bandwidth is W[1]-hard when parameterized only by cvd. A gradual process of release began as early as 2007 when 1% of the cosmic-ray data was made public, along with 100% of the space-weather information. In February 2021, a portal was released containing 10% of cosmic-ray data collected from 2004 to 2018, during Phase I of the Observatory. The Portal included detailed documentation about the detection and reconstruction procedures, analysis codes that can be easily used and modified and, additionally, visualization tools. Since then the Portal has been updated and extended. In 2023, a catalog of the 100 highest-energy cosmic-ray events examined in depth has been included. A specific section dedicated to educational use has been developed with the expectation that these data will be explored by a wide and diverse community including professional and citizen-scientists, and used for educational and outreach initiatives. Abstract: The motion visualization in a structural component was studied for defect detection. Elastic motions were excited by hammer impacts at multiple points and received by an accelerometer at a fixed point. Reciprocity in elastodynamics is only valid under certain conditions. Its validity under given experimental conditions was derived from the elastodynamic reciprocity theorem. Based on this, the dynamic motion of the structural component was obtained for fixed-point excitation from measurements performed using multipoint excitations. In the visualized eigenmodes, significant additional deformation was observed at the wall thinning inserted as an artificial defect. To prevent the dependence of defect detection on its position within the mode shape, another approach was proposed based on the extraction of guided wave modes immediately after impact excitation. It is shown that this maximum intensity projection method works well in detecting defects.

136. Rewriting History: Repurposing Domain-Specific CGRAs

Abstract: Coarse-grained reconfigurable arrays (CGRAs) are domain-specific devices promising both the flexibility of FPGAs and the performance of ASICs. However, with restricted domains comes a danger: designing chips that cannot accelerate enough current and future software to justify the hardware cost. We introduce FlexC, the first flexible CGRA compiler, which allows CGRAs to be adapted to operations they do not natively support. FlexC uses dataflow rewriting, replacing unsupported regions of code with equivalent operations that are supported by the CGRA. We use equality saturation, a technique enabling efficient exploration of a large space of rewrite rules, to effectively search through the program-space for supported programs. We applied FlexC to over 2,000 loop kernels, compiling to four different research CGRAs and 300 generated CGRAs and demonstrate a 2.2$\times$ increase in the number of loop kernels accelerated leading to 3$\times$ speedup compared to an Arm A5 CPU on kernels that would otherwise be unsupported by the accelerator.

Abstract: Despite the remarkable success of deep learning systems over the last decade, a key difference still remains between neural network and human decision-making: As humans, we cannot only form a decision on the spot, but also ponder, revisiting an initial guess from different angles, distilling relevant information, arriving at a better decision. Here, we propose RecycleNet, a latent feature recycling method, instilling the pondering capability for neural networks to refine initial decisions over a number of recycling steps, where outputs are fed back into earlier network layers in an iterative fashion. This approach makes minimal assumptions about the neural network architecture and thus can be implemented in a wide variety of contexts. Using medical image segmentation as the evaluation environment, we show that latent feature recycling enables the network to iteratively refine initial predictions even beyond the iterations seen during training, converging towards an improved decision. We evaluate this across a variety of segmentation benchmarks and show consistent improvements even compared with top-performing segmentation methods. Abstract: We present a robust model predictive control (MPC) framework for linear systems facing bounded parametric uncertainty and bounded disturbances. Our approach deviates from standard MPC formulations by integrating multi-step predictors, which provide reduced error bounds. These bounds, derived from multi-step predictors, are utilized in a homothetic tube formulation to mitigate conservatism. Lastly, a multi-rate formulation is adopted to handle the incompatibilities of multi-step predictors. We provide a theoretical analysis, guaranteeing robust recursive feasibility, constraint satisfaction, and (practical) stability of the desired setpoint. Abstract: Real-world systems are often characterized by high-dimensional nonlinear dynamics, making them challenging to control in real time. While reduced-order models (ROMs) are frequently employed in model-based control schemes, dimensionality reduction introduces model uncertainty which can potentially compromise the stability and safety of the original high-dimensional system. In this work, we propose a novel reduced-order model predictive control (ROMPC) scheme to solve constrained optimal control problems for nonlinear, high-dimensional systems. To address the challenges of using ROMs in predictive control schemes, we derive an error bounding system that dynamically accounts for model reduction error. Using these bounds, we design a robust MPC scheme that ensures robust constraint satisfaction, recursive feasibility, and asymptotic stability. 141. Stafﬁng Patterns of Non-ACGME Fellowships with 4-Year Residency Programs: A National Survey

Abstract: Introduction: Emergency medicine (EM) is one of few specialties with variable training lengths. Hiring a three-year graduate to continue fellowship training in a department that supports a four-year residency program can lead to conﬂicts around resident supervision. We sought to understand hiring and clinical supervision, or stafﬁng, patterns of non-Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) fellowships hosted at institutions supporting four-year residency programs.Methods: We performed a web-based, cross-sectional survey of non-ACGME fellowship directors (FD) hosted at institutions supporting four-year EM residency programs. We calculated descriptive statistics. Our primary outcome was the proportion of programs with four-year EM residencies that hire non-ACGME fellows graduating from three-year EM residencies.Results: Of 119 eligible FDs, 88 (74%) completed the survey. Seventy FDs (80%) indicated that they hire graduates of three-year residencies. Fifty-six (80%) indicated that three-year graduates supervise residents. Most FDs (74%) indicated no additional requirements exist to supervise residents outside of being hired as faculty. The FDs cited department policy, concerns about quality and length of training, and resident complaints as reasons for not hiring three-year graduates. A majority (10/18, 56%) noted that not hiring fellows from three-year programs negatively impacts recruitment and gives them access to a smaller applicant pool.Conclusion: Most non-ACGME fellowships at institutions with four-year EM programs recruit three-year graduates and allow them to supervise residents. This survey provides programs information on how comparable fellowships recruit and staff their departments, which may inform policies that ﬁt the needs of their learners, the fellowship, and the department.

Abstract: The MYC oncogene is often dysregulated in human cancer, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). MYC is considered undruggable to date. Here, we comprehensively identify genes essential for survival of MYChigh but not MYClow cells by a CRISPR/Cas9 genome-wide screen in a MYC-conditional HCC model. Our screen uncovers novel MYC synthetic lethal (MYC-SL) interactions and identifies most MYC-SL genes described previously. In particular, the screen reveals nucleocytoplasmic transport to be a MYC-SL interaction. We show that the majority of MYC-SL nucleocytoplasmic transport genes are upregulated in MYChigh murine HCC and are associated with poor survival in HCC patients. Inhibiting Exportin-1 (XPO1) in vivo induces marked tumor regression in an autochthonous MYC-transgenic HCC model and inhibits tumor growth in HCC patient-derived xenografts. XPO1 expression is associated with poor prognosis only in HCC patients with high MYC activity. We infer that MYC may generally regulate and require altered expression of nucleocytoplasmic transport genes for tumorigenesis.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Fibrocartilaginous embolic myelopathy (FCE) is a well-documented condition in dogs although rarely reported in chondrodystrophic breeds. Genetic associations have not been defined. OBJECTIVES: Define the association of the chondrodystrophy-associated FGF4L2 retrogene with histopathologically confirmed cases of FCE. ANIMALS: Ninety-eight dogs with a histopathologic diagnosis of FCE. METHODS: Retrospective multicenter study. Dogs were genotyped for the FGF4L2 and FGF4L1 retrogenes using DNA extracted from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue. Associations between breed, FCE and retrogene status were investigated with reference to a hospital population and known breed and general population allele frequencies. RESULTS: FGF4L2 genotype was defined in 89 FCE cases. Fibrocartilaginous embolic myelopathy was present in 22 dogs from FGF4L2-segregating breeds with allele frequencies of ≥5%; however, all dogs were wild type. Abstract: To increase granularity in human neuroimaging science, we designed and built a next-generation 7 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging scanner to reach ultra-high resolution by implementing several advances in hardware. To improve spatial encoding and increase the image signal-to-noise ratio, we developed a head-only asymmetric gradient coil (200 mT m-1, 900 T m-1s-1) with an additional third layer of windings. We integrated a 128-channel receiver system with 64- and 96-channel receiver coil arrays to boost signal in the cerebral cortex while reducing g-factor noise to enable higher accelerations. A 16-channel transmit system reduced power deposition and improved image uniformity. The scanner routinely performs functional imaging studies at 0.35-0.45 mm isotropic spatial resolution to reveal cortical layer functional activity, achieves high angular resolution in diffusion imaging and reduces acquisition time for both functional and structural imaging.

146. Knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding malaria transmission and prevention in an indigenous Maijuna community: a qualitative study in the Peruvian Amazon

Abstract: Abstract Background Peru is a low-endemic transmission area for malaria, where the majority (84%) of incident malaria cases are localized to the department of Loreto, which is composed of several geographically isolated rural communities. Recent intervention efforts targeting at-risk Indigenous populations that live in riverine communities in Loreto place emphasis on preventive behaviours to decrease transmission. However, malaria related behaviour change is often dependent upon local knowledge, beliefs, and practices, especially in areas where malaria is viewed an embedded and unavoidable aspect of life. Methods This exploratory case study used semi-structured interviews conducted in Spanish between February and March of 2019 to examine the knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to malaria prevention among the Indigenous Maijuna people of Sucusari, Loreto, Peru. Participants who consented were also administered a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) upon the time of interview. Results A total of 33 community members were interviewed, and 31 were tested via malaria rapid diagnostic tests, with RDT filter paper subsequently tested using PCR. All test results were negative for malaria. Themes that emerged included: varying knowledge of methods to prevent malaria, reports of observed changes in malaria incidence over time, confusion surrounding malaria transmission, treatment-seeking as a common behaviour, the belief that medications are effective, and the acceptance of bed nets which were viewed as a lifestyle norm. Conclusion These shared narratives should be used as a foundation for further studies and health interventions among communities in the Peruvian Amazon with limited access to health services where culturally resonant, community-based health programming is essential to improving health. Takeaways regarding confusion surrounding malaria transmission should also be considered.

Abstract: Droughts are often long-lasting phenomena, without a distinct start or end and with impacts cascading across sectors and systems, creating long-term legacies. Nevertheless, our current perceptions and management of droughts and their impacts are often event-based, which can limit the effective assessment of drought risks and reduction of drought impacts. Here, we advocate for changing this perspective and viewing drought as a hydrological–ecological–social continuum. We take a systems theory perspective and focus on how “memory” causes feedback and interactions between parts of the interconnected systems at different timescales. We first discuss the characteristics of the drought continuum with a focus on the hydrological, ecological, and social systems separately, and then we study the system of systems. Our analysis is based on a review of the literature and a study of five cases: Chile, the Colorado River basin in the USA, northeast Brazil, Kenya, and the Rhine River basin in northwest Europe. We find that the memories of past dry and wet periods, carried by both bio-physical (e.g. groundwater, vegetation) and social systems (e.g. people, governance), influence how future drought risk manifests. We identify four archetypes of drought dynamics: impact and recovery, slow resilience building, gradual collapse, and high resilience–big shock. The interactions between the hydrological, ecological, and social systems result in systems shifting between these types, which plays out differently in the five case studies. We call for more research on drought preconditions and recovery in different systems, on dynamics cascading between systems and triggering system changes, and on dynamic vulnerability and maladaptation. Additionally, we advocate for more continuous monitoring of drought hazards and impacts, modelling tools that better incorporate memories and adaptation responses, and management strategies that increase societal and institutional memory. This will help us to better deal with the complex hydrological–ecological–social drought continuum and identify effective pathways to adaptation and mitigation.

148. Investigating Preservice Teachers' Educational Technology Skills: A Problem-Solving Process

Abstract: Considering preservice teachers' reflections on their best academic learning experiences, the purpose of this research was to use a problem-solving lens to analyze how preservice teachers were first identifying an educational problem and then suggesting solutions where educational technology could be meaningfully implemented. This research used an exploratory, descriptive qualitative method. The participants included 100 preservice teachers enrolled in an introductory educational technology course at a large midwestern university in the U.S. Data were analyzed using an ill-structured problem-solving model synthesized from previous literature, with results presented by key phases: identifying problems, generating solutions, making justifications, and monitoring. The results of this study indicate that preservice teachers (i.e., novice problem solvers) had a simplistic understanding of technology integration, likely resulting from underdeveloped problem-solving skills. These results provide insight into the preservice teachers' problem-solving thinking and how they conceptualized the teaching-learning process, including technology integration.

149. 'Teachers Are the Guinea Pigs': Teacher Perspectives on a Sudden Reopening of Schools during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract: Primary and secondary education systems experienced substantial disruption during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, little is known about how public health policy has affected Australian teachers during the pandemic. This study examines teacher perspectives on a sudden change of policy, whereby schools were abruptly opened to students at the beginning of the pandemic. At the same time, strict social distancing rules applied to the remainder of the population. Qualitative data from 372 Western Australian schoolteachers were analysed using thematic analysis. Results highlight substantial impacts on teachers' workloads and adverse effects on wellbeing. Perceptions that they were acting as guinea pigs and subjected to different social distancing rules than other citizens were particular stressors. Findings highlight substantial consequences of public health policies on the roles and wellbeing of teachers.

150. Enhancing the First-Year Experience Program for Community College Students: Creating a Cohort Model to Encourage Success, Engagement, and Sense of Belonging

Abstract: Community Colleges are facing significant challenges to enrollment due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the impending enrollment cliff which will require higher education administration to adapt, get creative, and lead change in recruiting and retention strategies. Using the Sense of Community Theory (Serason, 1974) and the Involvement Theory (Astin, 1984), this study aims to evaluate student success, engagement, and sense of belonging. Through a qualitative comparative case study, students in a Men of Color (MOC) cohort, a pre nursing (NUR) cohort, and a baseline group of students in the standard college success seminar course enrollment were evaluated using in vivo, value and pattern coding of course assessments, reflections, and semi-structured focus groups. To provide more detailed and rich comparisons, course completion, course success, and student retention quantitative data were incorporated into each case analysis. The research findings indicate that the cohort model two-semester course format had a positive impact on student success, engagement, and sense of belonging. From this the researchers propose several recommendations for community colleges. First, it is recommended community colleges use a cohort model in assigning students to first year experience programs that are either career focused for students who identify a discipline of study or some other affinity for students who do not identify a discipline of study. Second, it is recommended that community colleges incorporate campus engagement activities within the first-year experience program and incentivize students to attend the activities. Third, it is recommended students receive ongoing follow-up not only during the first year at the college but through their credential completion to encourage retention. Fourth, it is recommended the instructors for the college success seminar course be well-trained, vetted, and highly engaging individuals to achieve the goals.
