Abstract

Within the European Human Biomonitoring (HBM) Initiative HBM4EU we derived HBM indicators that were designed to help answering key policy questions and support chemical policies. The result indicators convey information on chemicals exposure of different age groups, sexes, geographical regions and time points by comparing median exposure values. If differences are observed for one group or the other, policy measures or risk management options can be implemented. Impact indicators support health risk assessment by comparing exposure values with health-based guidance values, such as human biomonitoring guidance values (HBM-GVs). In general, the indicators should be designed to translate complex scientific information into short and clear messages and make it accessible to policy makers but also to a broader audience such as stakeholders (e.g. NGO's), other scientists and the general public. Based on harmonized data from the HBM4EU Aligned Studies (2014–2021), the usefulness of our indicators was demonstrated for the age group children (6–11 years), using two case examples: one phthalate (Diisobutyl phthalate: DiBP) and one non-phthalate substitute (Di-isononyl cyclohexane-1,2- dicarboxylate: DINCH). For the comparison of age groups, these were compared to data for teenagers (12–18 years), and time periods were compared using data from the DEMOCOPHES project (2011–2012). Our result indicators proved to be suitable for demonstrating the effectiveness of policy measures for DiBP and the need of continuous monitoring for DINCH. They showed similar exposure for boys and girls, indicating that there is no need for gender focused interventions and/or no indication of sex-specific exposure patterns. They created a basis for a targeted approach by highlighting relevant geographical differences in internal exposure. An adequate data basis is essential for revealing differences for all indicators. 140. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in plastics and sediments from south atlantic coastal wetlands, bahía blanca, argentina

Abstract

This study assessed for the first time the occurrence of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs), specifically organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), in plastics ranging from 1 to 25 mm (micro/meso-plastics) and 25 to 100 mm (macroplastics) and sediments from salt marshes at the Bahia Blanca Estuary, Argentina. These ecologically important ecosystems are located in the intertidal zone of a coastal environment heavily impacted by human activity, including deep-water ports, petrochemical complexes, and cities with populations of over 400,000 inhabitants with inadequate environmental management. Results showed that the average concentrations and detection frequency of POPs were substantially higher in the plastics than in the sediments: 167.4 ng/g, 25.2 ng/g and 2.7 ng/g, for micro/meso-plastics, macro-plastics, and sediments, respectively, showing the high capacity of plastics to accumulate organic substances. In regards to the environmental levels of the POPs series, in general PCBs¿DDTs¿HCHs¿HCB¿PeCB with independence of the location and matrix. Exceptions emerged close to an open dump and industrial effluents where HCB and PeCB were dominant. The spatial distribution varied depending on the POPs group series and the matrix; however, the levels of DDTs and HCHs were consistently low throughout the sedimentary record. While HCH and DDT were higher in plastics near Maldonado River discharge. Meanwhile, higher PCBs, HCB, and PeCB levels correlated urban-industrial facilities and open dumps. This is the first study on the presence of POPs in plastics from coastal wetlands around the world, as well as the first to assess the association of these chemicals in environmental plastics from Argentina. Abstract

In this study, the emission changes for the city of Brno in the Czech Republic following the implementation of four policy measures focused on transport and energy were assessed simultaneously for nine air pollutants and three greenhouse gases (GHGs). The policy measure related to the reduction of the motorised vehicles in the city and subsequent increase in use of soft transport was the one with the highest emission reduction potential for most of the compounds investigated (e.g. up to 13% decrease for PM2.5 and NOx). Such type of measures, which have a higher positive effect on human health and climate change than those on low-carbon vehicles, are difficult to implement as they require a behavioral change. Therefore, they should be implemented along additional measures which can be easily implemented such as those on the replacement of old coal-fired boilers.
