103. Impact response and energy absorption of single phase syntactic foam

Abstract

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd. This study experimentally investigates the static and impact response of a new single phase syntactic foam which has been newly developed for impact energy absorption. The syntactic foam had different densities ranging from 172 kg/m3to 366 kg/m3depending on the thickness and composition of the coating layers. The impact response and impact energy absorption were investigated by using instrumented drop-weight impact tests. Under static loads, the mechanical properties of the syntactic foam including the compressive strength, the yield stress, and Young's modulus increased with the density but the rate of increment decreased at higher densities. There were two types of progressive failures of the syntactic foam under impact loads. The failure propagation was examined and found to be dependent on the material density and the impact velocity. Interestingly, the densification only occurred in the low-density specimens while this phenomenon was not observed for the specimens with the density greater than 288 kg/m3. The impact energy absorption capacity increased significantly with the density and the wall thickness of the macrospheres.

104. Effect of crumb rubber on mechanical properties of multi-phase syntactic foams

Abstract

Syntactic foam is a lightweight and strong material which can be used in marine and aeronautical applications. However, the brittleness of the material limits its application to a broader range. Adding crumb rubber to the syntactic foam can increase its energy absorption capacity. The effect of crumb rubber on the fracture toughness and energy absorption capacity of 2-phase and 3-phase syntactic foam is evaluated under both static and impact loads. The experimental results have shown that the fracture toughness of the 2-phase rubberized syntactic foam increased by 8% while an increase of 22% of its fracture energy was observed. Under quasi-static loads, the 3-phase rubberized syntactic foam showed decreases in the compressive strength and elastic modulus but an increase in the energy absorption capacity as compared to the syntactic foam without crumb rubber. In addition, the impact energy absorption of the 3-phase rubberized syntactic foam increased by 24% as compared to that of the 3-phase syntactic foam without crumb rubber.

Abstract

Anthrax infection is primarily initiated by B. anthracis endospores that on entry into the host germinate to vegetative cells and cause severe bacteremia and toxaemia employing an array of host colonisation factors and the lethal tripartite toxin. The protective efficacy of conventional protective antigen (PA) based anthrax vaccines is improved by co-administration with inactivated spores or its components. In the present study, using structural vaccinology rationale we synthesized a bivalent protein r-PB encompassing toxin (PAIV) and spore components (BclACTD) and characterized its protective efficacy against B. anthracis infection. Active immunization of mice with r-PB generated high titer circulating antibodies which facilitated the phagocytic uptake of spores, inhibited their germination to vegetative cells and completely neutralized anthrax toxins in vivo resulting in 100 % survival against anthrax toxin challenge. Proliferation of CD4+ T cell subsets with up-regulation of Th1 (IFN-γ, IL-2, and IL-12), Th2 (IL-5, IL-10) cytokines and balanced expression of IgG1:IgG2a antibody isotypes indicated the stimulation of both Th1 and Th2 subsets. The immunized mice exhibited 100 % survival upon challenge with B. anthracis spores or toxin indicating the ability of r-PB to provide comprehensive protection against anthrax. Our results thus demonstrate r-PB an efficient vaccine candidate against anthrax infection.

Abstract

The role that climate and environmental history may have played in influencing human evolution has been the focus of considerable interest and controversy among paleoanthropologists for decades. Prior attempts to understand the environmental history side of this equation have centered around the study of outcrop sediments and fossils adjacent to where fossil hominins (ancestors or close relatives of modern humans) are found, or from the study of deep sea drill cores. However, outcrop sediments are often highly weathered and thus are unsuitable for some types of paleoclimatic records, and deep sea core records come from long distances away from the actual fossil and stone tool remains. The Hominin Sites and Paleolakes Drilling Project (HSPDP) was developed to address these issues. The project has focused its efforts on the eastern African Rift Valley, where much of the evidence for early hominins has been recovered. We have collected about 2 km of sediment drill core from six basins in Kenya and Ethiopia, in lake deposits immediately adjacent to important fossil hominin and archaeological sites. Collectively these cores cover in time many of the key transitions and critical intervals in human evolutionary history over the last 4 Ma, such as the earliest stone tools, the origin of our own genus Homo, and the earliest anatomically modern Homo sapiens. Here we document the initial field, physical property, and core description results of the 2012–2014 HSPDP coring campaign.

Item does not contain fulltext The results of a study on perceptual learning are reported. Dutch subjects made lexical decisions on a list of words and nonwords. Embedded in the list were either [f]- or [s]-final words in which the final fricative had been replaced by an ambiguous sound, midway between [f] and [s]. One group of listeners heard ambiguous [f]-final Dutch words like [kara?] (based on karaf, carafe) and unambiguous [s]-final words (e.g., karkas, carcase). A second group heard the reverse (e.g., ambiguous [karka?] and unambiguous karaf). After this training phase, listeners labelled ambiguous fricatives on an [f]-[s] continuum. The subjects who had heard [?] in [f]-final words categorised these fricatives as [f] reliably more often than those who had heard [?] in [s]-final words. These results suggest that speech recognition is dynamic: the system adjusts to the constraints of each particular listening situation. The lexicon can provide this adjustment process with a training signal.

Chapter 4: Incident Investigation in SMS and FRMS The European Commission HILAS project (Human Integration into the Lifecycle of Aviation Systems - a project supported by the European Commission’s 6th Framework between 2005-2009) was focused on using human factors knowledge and methodology to address key challenges for aviation (current and future) including a performance based approach for safety and fatigue management in the aviation sector, mainly inflight operations and maintenance. The project Deliverables have been presented as a series of draft book chapters on Safety Management Systems with emphasis on Fatigue risk Management and organisational learning from operational experiences in aviation. The chapters also include conceptual frameworks underlying a thorough analysis of essential functions, contents and structures of a Safety Management System (SMS). This includes supporting functionalities such as investigation in just culture context, decision making processes, and safety promotion. This set of eight (8) draft chapters links theory with field implementation and regulation in airlines. Abstract

The Kulubnarti population provides a unique opportunity to develop isotopic profiles reflecting aspects of diet that can assessed in a well established framework of life history patterns. Much of the previous work, however, has been limited to the adult segment of the population. In this paper, we have included subadults of the R-group population in our analysis. As childhood represents a vulnerable stage in the human lifespan, and overall childhood health has been found reflective of population success, analysis of individuals that did not survive this critical period can aid in a biocultural reconstruction of life histories. Collagen, isolated from ribs, was analyzed isotopically for both carbon and nitrogen isotopes. In addition, a thin section was prepared at the site of the original cut on each rib, and examined microscopically. The objectives were multi-facetted, to examine differences in isotopic ratios between age groups, and to examine isotopic differences matched with histological growth profiles. With the exception of a change in [delta]13C and [delta]15N values associated with the weaning transition, preliminary analyses indicates that variation between age groups was statistically insignificant from variation within age categories. Histological analysis allowed for an examination of variation in bone growth, which would then be examined with respect to isotopic variation. Isotopic variation between diaphyseal and epiphyseal areas of the bone was also analyzed.

Abstract

Although early hominid habitats at Laetoli have traditionally been interpreted as upland grassland and open woodland biomes, recent analyses of fossil faunal assemblages suggest that these ecosystems may have been more heavily wooded. In light of emerging evidence indicating that penecontemporaneous and older hominid sites in Africa are wooded or forested, it is important to establish whether Laetoli is anomalous in representing an open grassland habitat as it potentially extends the range of ecological contexts in which we should interpret early human evolution. Stable carbon isotopic analyses of herbivore enamel provides key data, especially when interpreted in conjunction with analyses of taxonomic and morphological aspects of vertebrate assemblages, invertebrates, paleobotany, and lithofacies. By early Pliocene, [C.sub.4] grasses were well established in East African paleoecosystems and semi-quantitative assessments of relative proportions of [C.sub.3] and [C.sub.4] plant biomass in the past are indicative of the extent of canopy cover. Stable carbon and oxygen isotopic analyses focused on fossil enamel fragments of multiple individuals from over 22 fossil vertebrate taxa, fossil ostrich eggshell, and paleosol components recovered from the lower Laetolil Beds (>4.3-3.8 Ma), the upper Laetolil Beds (~3.8-3.4 Ma), and the upper Ndolanya Beds (~2.5-2.6 Ma). Samples were collected from a number of localities at different stratigraphic levels in order to develop a high resolution spatiotemporal ecological reconstruction of the Laetoli region. The data indicate that although the local ecosystem was heterogeneous with both [C.sub.3] and [C.sub.4] dietary plants available, the relative proportions of obligate browsers, mixed feeders, and grazers are inconsistent with open grasslands and reflect more wooded conditions.
