A novel noncontact, mobile sensing technique to measure absolute stress in rail using photoluminescence piezospectroscopy is presented. Photoluminescence piezospectroscopy is a vibrational spectroscopy technique for chemical identification and stress measurement by focusing low-power laser on a substance surface. Thermite welding is a major welding method for continuous welded rail, which produces iron (Fe) and aluminum oxides (Al2O3) after aluminothermic reaction. Photoluminescence piezospectroscopy was used as a noncontact stress sensing method since photoluminescence piezospectroscopy has an excellent detectability for alpha-phase aluminum oxide (α-Al2O3). Using a portable photoluminescence piezospectroscopy system, a prominent α-Al2O3 signal was collected from the bare surface of thermite weld samples. A loading frame test was conducted to determine the piezospectroscopic coefficient of α-Al2O3 in thermite weld. A pulverization method is introduced to determine absolute stress from an existing rail sample. The experimental results show many advantages of this method over traditional methods to measure stress in rail as a mobile sensing method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Burkholderia glumae are bacteria pathogenic to rice plants that cause a disease called bacterial panicle blight (BPB) in rice panicles. BPB, induced by B. glumae, causes enormous economic losses to the rice agricultural industry. B. glumae also causes bacterial disease in other crops because it has various virulence factors, such as toxins, proteases, lipases, extracellular polysaccharides, bacterial motility, and bacterial secretion systems. In particular, B. glumae BGR1 harbors type VI secretion system (T6SS) with functionally distinct roles: the prokaryotic targeting system and the eukaryotic targeting system. The functional activity of T6SS requires 13 core components and T6SS accessory proteins, such as adapters containing DUF2169, DUF4123, and DUF1795 domains. There are two genes, bglu_1g23320 and bglu_2g07420, encoding the DUF2169 domain-containing protein in the genome of B. glumae BGR1. bglu_2g07420 belongs to the gene cluster of T6SS group_5 in B. glumae BGR1, whereas bglu_1g23320 does not belong to any T6SS gene cluster in B. glumae BGR1. T6SS group_5 of B. glumae BGR1 is involved in bacterial virulence in rice plants. The DUF2169 domain-containing protein with a single domain can function by itself; however, Δu1g23320 showed no attenuated virulence in rice plants. In contrast, Δu2g07420DUF2169 and Δu2g07420PPR did exhibit attenuated virulence in rice plants. These results suggest that the pentapeptide repeats region of the C-terminal additional domain, as well as the DUF2169 domain, is required for complete functioning of the DUF2169 domain-containing protein encoded by bglu_2g07420. bglu_2g07410, which encodes the pentapeptide repeats protein, composed of only the pentapeptide repeats region, is located downstream of bglu_2g07420. Δu2g07410 also shows attenuated virulence in rice plants. This finding suggests that the pentapeptide repeats protein, encoded by bglu_2g07410, is involved in bacterial virulence. This study is the first report that the DUF2169 domain-containing protein and pentapeptide repeats protein are involved in bacterial virulence to the rice plants as T6SS accessory proteins, encoded in the gene cluster of the T6SS group_5. A pandemic has always been a milestone, forcing intellectuals to reassess the directions of development at their time. This fact has generated vivid debates about the possible reactions to the new situation, highlighting the vulnerability of current socio-economic structures as well as the need to reconsider the current way of development. The new challenge has created an unprecedented increase in academic publications. The aim of the current paper is to analyze the socio-economic aspects of the growing interest in the sustainability-related facets of the pandemic. Based on English language journal articles (n = 1326), collected on the Web of Science website, the authors analyze the different aspects of COVID-related discussions connected to sustainability. Applying the triangulation approach, the publications have been classified on the basis of their intellectual roots, co-occurrence of different words and strategic diagramming. Results highlight that, notwithstanding the remarkable number of papers, there is a strong need for the in-depth analysis of the long-term consequences in the fields of (1) health logistics and policy; (2) the future of education and work, based on experience and evidence; (3) the re-thinking of the resilience of large-scale supply systems; (4) global governance of world affairs, (5) the role of distant teaching, telecommunication, telework, telehealth, teleservices. It has been more than a year since the coronavirus (COVID-19) engulfed the whole world, disturbing the daily routine, bringing down the economies, and killing two million people across the globe at the time of writing. The pandemic brought the world together to a joint effort to find a cure and work toward developing a vaccine. Much to the anticipation, the first batch of vaccines started rolling out by the end of 2020, and many countries began the vaccination drive early on while others still waiting in anticipation for a successful trial. Social media, meanwhile, was bombarded with all sorts of both positive and negative stories of the development and the evolving coronavirus situation. Many people were looking forward to the vaccines, while others were cautious about the side-effects and the conspiracy theories resulting in mixed emotions. This study explores users' tweets concerning the COVID-19 vaccine and the sentiments expressed on Twitter. It tries to evaluate the polarity trend and a shift since the start of the coronavirus to the vaccination drive across six countries. The findings suggest that people of neighboring countries have shown quite a similar attitude regarding the vaccination in contrast to their different reactions to the coronavirus outbreak. Bakanae disease is a fungal disease of rice (Oryza sativa L.) caused by the pathogen Gibberella fujikuroi (also known as Fusarium fujikuroi). This study was carried out to identify novel quantitative trait loci (QTLs) from an indica variety Zenith. We performed a QTL mapping using 180 F2:9 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross between the resistant variety, Zenith, and the susceptible variety, Ilpum. A primary QTL study using the genotypes and phenotypes of the RILs indicated that the locus qBK1z conferring bakanae disease resistance from the Zenith was located in a 2.8 Mb region bordered by the two RM (Rice Microsatellite) markers, RM1331 and RM3530 on chromosome 1. The log of odds (LOD) score of qBK1z was 13.43, accounting for 30.9% of the total phenotypic variation. A finer localization of qBK1z was delimited at an approximate 730 kb interval in the physical map between Chr01_1435908 (1.43 Mbp) and RM10116 (2.16 Mbp). Introducing qBK1z or pyramiding with other previously identified QTLs could provide effective genetic control of bakanae disease in rice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By virtue of the advances in sensing techniques, finite element (FE) model updating (FEMU) using static and dynamic data has been recently employed to improve identification on updating parameters. Using heterogeneous data can provide useful information to improve parameter identifiability in FEMU. It is worth noting that the useful information from the heterogeneous data may be diluted in the conventional FEM framework. The conventional FEMU framework in previous studies have used heterogeneous data at once to compute residuals in the objective function, and they are condensed to be a scalar. In this implementation, it should be careful to formulate the objective function with proper weighting factors to consider the scale of measurement and relative significances. Otherwise, the information from heterogeneous data cannot be efficiently utilized. For FEMU of the bridge, parameter compensation may exist due to mutual dependence among updating parameters. This aggravates the parameter identifiability to make the results of the FEMU worse. To address the limitation of the conventional FEMU method, this study proposes a sequential framework for the FEMU of existing bridges. The proposed FEMU method uses two steps to utilize static and dynamic data in a sequential manner. By using them separately, the influence of the parameter compensation can be suppressed. The proposed FEMU method is verified through numerical and experimental study. Through these verifications, the limitation of the conventional FEMU method is investigated in terms of parameter identifiability and predictive performance. The proposed FEMU method shows much smaller variabilities in the updating parameters than the conventional one by providing the better predictions than those of the conventional one in calibration and validation data. Based on numerical and experimental study, the proposed FEMU method can improve the parameter identifiability using the heterogeneous data and it seems to be promising and efficient framework for FEMU of the existing bridge. In this study, two bacterial strains, IRP7 and IRP8, were selected to induce resistance against pine wilt disease (PWD). Foliar application with these strains to nematode-inoculated pine seedlings significantly reduced PWD severity. The effect of nematode inoculation and bacterial treatment on the rhizosphere bacterial community was investigated. The results indicated that the rhizosphere of nematode-inoculated seedlings contained a lower relative abundance of beneficial microbes such as Paraburkholderia , Bradyrhizobium , Rhizobacter , Lysobacter , and Caballeronia. Bacterial treatment resulted in significant changes in the microbes that were represented in relatively low relative abundance. Treatment with IRP7 resulted in an increase in the relative abundance of Nitrospirillum , Bacillus , and Luteibacter , which might be useful for protection against infection. Treatment with IRP8 resulted in an increase in the relative abundance of obligate bacterial predators of the Bdellovibrio genus that were previously shown to control several bacterial phytopathogens and may have a role in the management of nematode-carried bacteria. The selected bacteria were identified as Pseudomonas koreensis IRP7 and Lysobacter enzymogenes IRP8 and are suggested as a potential treatment for induced resistance against PWD. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the effect of foliar treatment with resistance-inducing bacteria on the rhizosphere microbiota.

In this study, a new recirculation column reactor system for arsenate removal using a polyethylenimine coated bacterial biosorbent was developed. Solution pH was the most important factor in process design and operation. In order to control and optimize solution pH favorable for arsenate removal, a pH control and recirculation system was added to a column reactor. The effects of recycle ratio, initial arsenate concentration, and flow rate on the arsenate removal performance of the developed process were examined. Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models were used to interpret the breakthrough curve of arsenate removal. The maximum arsenate adsorption amount of the new reactor was determined to be 50.86 mg/g by the Thomas model. Importantly, the new reactor showed unimpeded adsorption performance compared with that in the batch experiments. The desorption study also showed excellent reusability. The use of activated sludge process for biological treatment of domestic and industrial wastewaters generates large amounts of sewage sludge, which is regarded as problematic biowaste. Conventional waste treatment methods such as landfilling and ocean pumping have been used to dispose the unwanted sludge, but this practice is no longer recommended due to serious secondary pollution and strict environmental regulations. Hydrothermal treatment represents a promising alternative that has attracted attention in recent years. In this study, batch experiments of hydrothermal treatment of domestic sewage sludge were conducted under varying conditions (temperature of 150-300 °C, reaction time of 0.5-3.0 h, and sludge concentration of 5-30 g/L). A statistical study of the responses, including disintegration degree and concentration of dissolved compounds, was performed using a response surface methodology. Background: Bakanae disease is an important fungal disease caused by Gibberella fujikuroi. Incidence of rice bakanae disease creates serious problems in the foremost rice growing countries, and no rice variety has been found to be completely resistant to this disease. However, breeding rice varieties resistant to bakanae disease may be a cost-saving solution preferable to the application of fungicides. In this study, we aimed to determine the exact position and the candidate gene for qBK1, a major resistant quantitative trait locus (QTLs) for bakanae disease., Results: The genotypes/phenotypes of recombinants selected from backcrossed recombinant inbred lines of two rice varieties, Shingwang (resistant) and Ilpum (susceptible), indicated that the locus qBK1, conferring resistance to bakanae disease in Shingwang, was delimited to a 35-kb interval delimited by InDel 18 (23.637 Mbp) and InDel 19-14 (23.672 Mbp). Sequence analysis of this 35-kb region revealed four candidate genes, LOC_Os01g41770, LOC_Os01g41780, LOC_Os01g41790, and LOC_Os01g41800. There were many non-synonymous SNPs in LOC_Os01g41770 and the transcript of LOC_Os01g41790 was early terminated in Shingwang, whereas there were no differences in both LOC_Os01g41780 and LOC_Os01g41800 sequences between Ilpum and Shingwang. Expression profiling of the four candidate genes showed the up-regulation of LOC_Os01g41770, LOC_Os01g41780, and LOC_Os01g41790 in Ilpum and of LOC_Os01g41800 in Shingwang after inoculation of G. fujikuroi., Conclusion: Utilization of marker-assisted selection (MAS) with a precise molecular marker on qBK1 could provide an effective tool for breeding rice varieties resistant to bakanae disease. To our knowledge, this is the first report on fine mapping and candidate gene approaches for identifying the gene for qBK1.

Aim: To assess the efficacy and safety of a patient-positioning device (EZ-FIX) for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)., Methods: A total of 105 patients were randomized to the EZ-FIX (n = 53) or non-EZ-FIX (n = 52) group in this prospective study. Midazolam and propofol, titrated to provide an adequate level of sedation during therapeutic ERCP, were administered by trained registered nurses under endoscopist supervision. Primary outcome measures were the total dose of propofol and sedative-related complications, including hypoxia and hypotension. Secondary outcome measures were recovery time and sedation satisfaction of the endoscopist, nurses, and patients., Results: There was no significant difference in the rate of hypoxia, but there was a statistical trend (EX-FIX group; n = 4, 7.55%, control group; n = 6, 11.53%, P = 0.06). The mean total dose of propofol was lower in the EZ-FIX group than in the non-EZ-FIX group (89.43 ± 49.8 mg vs 112.4 ± 53.8 mg, P = 0.025). In addition, the EZ-FIX group had a shorter mean recovery time (11.23 ± 4.61 mg vs 14.96 ± 5.12 mg, P < 0.001). Sedation satisfaction of the endoscopist and nurses was higher in the EX-FIX group than in the non-EZ-FIX group. Technical success rates of the procedure were 96.23% and 96.15%, respectively (P = 0.856). Procedure-related complications did not differ by group (11.32% vs 13.46%, respectively, P = 0.735)., Conclusion: Using EZ-FIX reduced the total dose of propofol and the recovery time, and increased the satisfaction of the endoscopist and nurses.
