In recent years, the notion of Quantum Materials has emerged as a powerful unifying concept across diverse fields of science and engineering, from condensed-matter and cold atom physics to materials science and quantum computing. Beyond traditional quantum materials such as unconventional superconductors, heavy fermions, and multiferroics, the field has significantly expanded to encompass topological quantum matter, two-dimensional materials and their van der Waals heterostructures, Moire materials, Floquet time crystals, as well as materials and devices for quantum computation with Majorana fermions. In this Roadmap collection we aim to capture a snapshot of the most recent developments in the field, and to identify outstanding challenges and emerging opportunities. The format of the Roadmap, whereby experts in each discipline share their viewpoint and articulate their vision for quantum materials, reflects the dynamic and multifaceted nature of this research area, and is meant to encourage exchanges and discussions across traditional disciplinary boundaries. It is our hope that this collective vision will contribute to sparking new fascinating questions and activities at the intersection of materials science, condensed matter physics, device engineering, and quantum information, and to shaping a clearer landscape of quantum materials science as a new frontier of interdisciplinary scientific inquiry., Comment: 93 pages, 27 figures

Variational approaches are among the most powerful modern techniques to approximately solve quantum many-body problems. These encompass both variational states based on tensor or neural networks, and parameterized quantum circuits in variational quantum eigensolvers. However, self-consistent evaluation of the quality of variational wavefunctions is a notoriously hard task. Using a recently developed Hamiltonian reconstruction method, we propose a multi-faceted approach to evaluating the quality of neural-network based wavefunctions. Specifically, we consider convolutional neural network (CNN) and restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) states trained on a square lattice spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model. We find that the reconstructed Hamiltonians are typically less frustrated, and have easy-axis anisotropy near the high frustration point. Furthermore, the reconstructed Hamiltonians suppress quantum fluctuations in the large $J_2$ limit. Our results highlight the critical importance of the wavefunction's symmetry. Moreover, the multi-faceted insight from the Hamiltonian reconstruction reveals that a variational wave function can fail to capture the true ground state through suppression of quantum fluctuations., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, plus 5 pages of supplemental material

Machine learning models are a powerful theoretical tool for analyzing data from quantum simulators, in which results of experiments are sets of snapshots of many-body states. Recently, they have been successfully applied to distinguish between snapshots that can not be identified using traditional one and two point correlation functions. Thus far, the complexity of these models has inhibited new physical insights from this approach. Here, using a novel set of nonlinearities we develop a network architecture that discovers features in the data which are directly interpretable in terms of physical observables. In particular, our network can be understood as uncovering high-order correlators which significantly differ between the data studied. We demonstrate this new architecture on sets of simulated snapshots produced by two candidate theories approximating the doped Fermi-Hubbard model, which is realized in state-of-the art quantum gas microscopy experiments. From the trained networks, we uncover that the key distinguishing features are fourth-order spin-charge correlators, providing a means to compare experimental data to theoretical predictions. Our approach lends itself well to the construction of simple, end-to-end interpretable architectures and is applicable to arbitrary lattice data, thus paving the way for new physical insights from machine learning studies of experimental as well as numerical data., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures + 13 pages of supplemental material

Recent observations of non-local transport in ultraclean 2D materials raised the tantalizing possibility of accessing hydrodynamic correlated transport of many-electron state. However, it has been pointed out that non-local transport can also arise from impurity scattering rather than interaction. At the crux of the ambiguity is the focus on linear effects, i.e. Ohm's law, which cannot easily differentiate among different modes of transport. Here we propose experiments that can reveal rich hydrodynamic features in the system by tapping into the non-linearity of the Navier-Stokes equation. Three experiments we propose will each manifest unique phenomenon well-known in classical fluids: the Bernoulli effect, Eckart streaming, and Rayleigh streaming. Analysis of known parameters confirms that the proposed experiments are feasible and the hydrodynamic signatures are within reach of graphene-based devices. Experimental realization of any one of the three phenomena will provide a stepping stone to formulating and exploring the notions of nonlinear electron fluid dynamics with an eye to celebrated examples from classical non-laminar flows, e.g. pattern formation and turbulence., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures + 6 pages of appendices

SOFIA HAWC+ polarimetry at $154~\micron$ is reported for the face-on galaxy M51 and the edge-on galaxy NGC 891. For M51, the polarization vectors generally follow the spiral pattern defined by the molecular gas distribution, the far-infrared (FIR) intensity contours, and other tracers of star formation. The fractional polarization is much lower in the FIR-bright central regions than in the outer regions, and we rule out loss of grain alignment and variations in magnetic field strength as causes. When compared with existing synchrotron observations, which sample different regions with different weighting, we find the net position angles are strongly correlated, the fractional polarizations are moderately correlated, but the polarized intensities are uncorrelated. We argue that the low fractional polarization in the central regions must be due to significant numbers of highly turbulent segments across the beam and along lines of sight in the beam in the central 3 kpc of M51. For NGC 891, the FIR polarization vectors within an intensity contour of 1500 $\rm{MJy~sr^{-1}}$ are oriented very close to the plane of the galaxy. The FIR polarimetry is probably sampling the magnetic field geometry in NGC 891 much deeper into the disk than is possible with NIR polarimetry and radio synchrotron measurements. In some locations in NGC 891 the FIR polarization is very low, suggesting we are preferentially viewing the magnetic field mostly along the line of sight, down the length of embedded spiral arms. The information content of crystalline materials becomes astronomical when collective electronic behavior and their fluctuations are taken into account. In the past decade, improvements in source brightness and detector technology at modern x-ray facilities have allowed a dramatically increased fraction of this information to be captured. Now, the primary challenge is to understand and discover scientific principles from big data sets when a comprehensive analysis is beyond human reach. We report the development of a novel unsupervised machine learning approach, XRD Temperature Clustering (X-TEC), that can automatically extract charge density wave (CDW) order parameters and detect intra-unit cell (IUC) ordering and its fluctuations from a series of high-volume X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements taken at multiple temperatures. We apply X-TEC to XRD data on a quasi-skutterudite family of materials, (Ca$_x$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$, where a quantum critical point arising from charge order is observed as a function of Ca concentration. We further apply X-TEC to XRD data on the pyrochlore metal, Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$, to investigate its two much debated structural phase transitions and uncover the Goldstone mode accompanying them. We demonstrate how unprecedented atomic scale knowledge can be gained when human researchers connect the X-TEC results to physical principles. Specifically, we extract from the X-TEC-revealed selection rule that the Cd and Re displacements are approximately equal in amplitude, but out of phase. This discovery reveals a previously unknown involvement of $5d^2$ Re, supporting the idea of an electronic origin to the structural order. Our approach can radically transform XRD experiments by allowing in-operando data analysis and enabling researchers to refine experiments by discovering interesting regions of phase space on-the-fly.

Non-Fermi liquid physics is a ubiquitous feature in strongly correlated metals, manifesting itself in anomalous transport properties, such as a $T$-linear resistivity in experiments. However, its theoretical understanding in terms of microscopic models is lacking despite decades of conceptual work and attempted numerical simulations. Here we demonstrate that a combination of sign problem-free quantum Monte Carlo sampling and quantum loop topography, a physics-inspired machine learning approach, can map out the emergence of non-Fermi liquid physics in the vicinity of a quantum critical point with little prior knowledge. Using only three parameter points for training the underlying neural network, we are able to reproducibly identify a stable non-Fermi liquid regime tracing the fan of a metallic quantum critical points at the onset of both spin-density wave and nematic order. Two-dimensional (2d) nano-electronics, plasmonics, and emergent phases require clean and local charge control, calling for layered, crystalline acceptors or donors. Our Raman, photovoltage, and electrical conductance measurements combined with \textit{ab initio} calculations establish the large work function and narrow bands of $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ enable modulation doping of exfoliated, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) materials. Short-ranged lateral doping (${\leq}65\ \text{nm}$) and high homogeneity are achieved in proximate materials with a single layer of \arucl. This leads to the highest monolayer graphene (mlg) mobilities ($4,900\ \text{cm}^2/ \text{Vs}$) at these high hole densities ($3\times10^{13}\ \text{cm}^{-2}$); and yields larger charge transfer to bilayer graphene (blg) ($6\times10^{13}\ \text{cm}^{-2}$). We further demonstrate proof of principle optical sensing, control via twist angle, and charge transfer through hexagonal boron nitride (hBN).

With rapid progress across platforms for quantum systems, the problem of many-body quantum state reconstruction for noisy quantum states becomes an important challenge. Recent works found promise in recasting the problem of quantum state reconstruction to learning the probability distribution of quantum state measurement vectors using generative neural network models. Here we propose the "Attention-based Quantum Tomography" (AQT), a quantum state reconstruction using an attention mechanism-based generative network that learns the mixed state density matrix of a noisy quantum state. The AQT is based on the model proposed in "Attention is all you need" by Vishwani et al (2017) that is designed to learn long-range correlations in natural language sentences and thereby outperform previous natural language processing models. We demonstrate not only that AQT outperforms earlier neural-network-based quantum state reconstruction on identical tasks but that AQT can accurately reconstruct the density matrix associated with a noisy quantum state experimentally realized in an IBMQ quantum computer. We speculate the success of the AQT stems from its ability to model quantum entanglement across the entire quantum system much as the attention model for natural language processing captures the correlations among words in a sentence.

FeSeTe has recently emerged as a leading candidate material for the two-dimensional topological superconductivity (TSC). Two reasons for the excitement are the high $T_c$ of the system and the fact that the Majorana zero modes (MZMs) inside the vortex cores live on the exposed surface rather than at the interface of a heterostructure as in the proximitized topological insulators. However, the recent scanning tunneling spectroscopy data have shown that, contrary to the theoretical expectation, the MZM does not exist inside every vortex core. Hence there are ``full'' vortices with MZMs and ``empty'' vortices without MZMs. Moreover the fraction of ``empty'' vortices increase with an increase in the magnetic field. We propose the possibility of two distinct gapped states competing for the topological surface states in FeSeTe: the TSC and half quantum anomalous Hall (hQAH). The latter is promoted by magnetic field through the alignment of magnetic impurities such as Fe interstitials. When hQAH takes over the topological surface state, the surface will become transparent to scanning tunneling microscopy and the nature of the vortex in such region will appear identical to what is expected of the vortices in the bulk, i.e., empty. Unmistakable signature of the proposed mechanism for empty vortices will be the existance of chiral Majorana modes(CMM) at the domain wall between a hQAH region and a TSC region. Such CMM should be observable by observing local density of states along a line connecting an empty vortex to a nearby full vortex., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures + supplementary materials

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) via call is essential for various applications, including AI for contact center (AICC) services. Despite the advancement of ASR, however, most publicly available call-based speech corpora such as Switchboard are old-fashioned. Also, most existing call corpora are in English and mainly focus on open domain dialog or general scenarios such as audiobooks. Here we introduce a new large-scale Korean call-based speech corpus under a goal-oriented dialog scenario from more than 11,000 people, i.e., ClovaCall corpus. ClovaCall includes approximately 60,000 pairs of a short sentence and its corresponding spoken utterance in a restaurant reservation domain. We validate the effectiveness of our dataset with intensive experiments using two standard ASR models. Despite their fundamental importance in dictating the quantum mechanical properties of a system, ground states of many-body local quantum Hamiltonians form a set of measure zero in the many-body Hilbert space. Hence determining whether a given many-body quantum state is ground-stateable is a challenging task. Here we propose an unsupervised machine learning approach, dubbed the Entanglement Clustering ("EntanCl"), to separate out ground-stateable wave functions from those that must be excited state wave functions using entanglement structure information. EntanCl uses snapshots of an ensemble of swap operators as input and projects this high dimensional data to two-dimensions, preserving important topological features of the data associated with distinct entanglement structure using the uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP). The projected data is then clustered using K-means clustering with $k=2$. By applying EntanCl to two examples, a one-dimensional band insulator and the two-dimensional toric code, we demonstrate that EntanCl can successfully separate ground states from excited states with high computational efficiency. Being independent of a Hamiltonian and associated energy estimates, EntanCl offers a new paradigm for addressing quantum many-body wave functions in a computationally efficient manner., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

`Strange metals' with resistivity depending linearly on temperature $T$ down to low-$T$ have been a long-standing puzzle in condensed matter physics. Here, we consider a model of itinerant spin-$1/2$ fermions interacting via on-site Hubbard interaction and random infinite-ranged spin-spin interaction. We show that the quantum critical point associated with the melting of the spin-glass phase by charge fluctuations displays non-Fermi liquid behaviour, with local spin dynamics identical to that of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev family of models. This extends the quantum spin liquid dynamics previously established in the large-$M$ limit of $SU(M)$ symmetric models, to models with physical $SU(2)$ spin-$1/2$ electrons. Remarkably, the quantum critical regime also features a Planckian linear-$T$ resistivity associated with a $T$-linear scattering rate and a frequency dependence of the electronic self-energy consistent with the Marginal Fermi Liquid phenomenology.
